Nervously Expecting

She was not going to overthink this, she told herself while pacing around the first landing of the owlery. One of the pockets of her jacket held a folded up piece of paper, an envelope, and her fountain pen. Who knew three ordinary, tiny objects like these could seem so heavy. It was ridiculous really. (It could also be her journal sitting in the other pocket, but that was besides the point.)
It took Vera about 5 laps clockwise, 5 counter-clockwise, and a minute of intense eye contact with a grumpy-looking owl to finally bite the bullet. She could hear her mum's usual "You've made it this far, Verka, what's a step further." And see, she always thought there was always at least one slight issue with her mum's logic, but she hadn't had any proof thus far. So, a leap of faith it was.
With a sigh, she took out the piece of paper and her pen, and, using her journal as a writing pad, started scribbling her letter while standing near the birdbath.

Dear Iris,
Sign-up sheets are such an odd thing, don't you think? You put your name on and forget about their existence until suddenly the consequences of your actions are chasing you days later. Your fate is in the hands of a stranger. That happened to me with this Quill Palls thing - I felt much braver writing my name on that sheet than I will be signing this one. (I'd never admit that in person, so you can't hold me accountable. : D)
Anyways.
I hope I'm doing this right because I never really write letters to anyone besides my parents and they wouldn't tell me I was doing something wrong. They'd sit down with coffee and laugh at all the ways I'm breaking the rules of letter-writing but not tell me until I get home for Christmas. Knowing them, they'd make me a "comprehensive guide" to use next time.
Now that I've shared my dramatic take on this situation, feel free to share yours, on this or on anything else. Be as dramatic as you want.
But if you feel like writing anything else, please do. I couldn't figure out what to write, so I'm just dumping whatever on paper.
Toodles,
Vera
Anyone with a pair of eyes would be able to tell that she didn't write with a quill and definitely not on a desk. Plus, the smiley might be a bit much... Hey, if first impressions are everything, at least she wasn't playing at something she's not. She quickly folded the paper back and stuffed it in an envelope, handing it over to one of the free school owls.
