| ===== | ===== 𝓐 s a child, Sanguinius found himself surrounded by an entourage of distinguished educators, each with their own preeminent pedigree or license that gave them enough qualifications to be hand-picked for a growing pure-blood's early education. Although he was actively being seen and treated as the outlier of the family at the time, his unruly predicament was still relatively better than most of the bastards that the Demarest's had sired or bore in the past -- which were only the acknowledged ones as far as he could tell on the dates in the scriptures. Sagnuinius was not afraid, bitter as he is, to admit that he was relieved that it was the single thing that had been served to him in a golden platter, while in other areas, he had to fight with tooth and nail to achieve. Or rather more fittingly, blade and steel. Among the rest that were responsible for his academic upbringing was a scholar who was renowned for his expertise in the art of literacy and composition, having published a few volumes under his name. The memories of the learnings he had received had long since faded within the dark recesses of Sanguius's mind, left to gather dust like the forgotten relics in an abandoned mausoleum, but the lessons that had dulled over time with age had not truly disappeared. He wasn't as utterly hopeless to the point that he could no longer detect what was a sonnet was or what a gerund entailed, he was still able to recall the vivid passion in his teacher’s voice whenever he was sermonizing, and the way he had made the words dance on the page like embers that came from a living flame. It was the specifics, the details, that had managed to slip away from the tips of his fingers, leaving only a vague sense of what once was. One of the assignments, in particular, had chosen to stay with him. His teacher was a firm believer that, the exposure that came from an experience, would be able to serve as a powerful motivator to influence a person's writing or do what was needed to be done. With his certain philosophy set in stone, he chose to approach the assignment in a way that Sanguinius would have thought to be a chore at the time, he had tasked him with a quill pal, a person of his choosing from a distant place with whom Sanguinius would exchange stories with. Karlie Keys, as he was promptly informed in the first letter, was a young girl that happened to end up under the same tutelage as he. Initially, they butted heads like two battering Graphorns in a fight, who were famously bad-tempered and aggressive in behavioral aspects. Her responses were clipped and abrupt, often to the degree of stopping a sentence entirely in the middle of a paragraph, as she made her point out of some topic they had been currently discussing, and gave him the sense that she wasn't a particularly chatty person in general. It had been difficult for Sanguinius as well, to find other matters to converse about while attempting to not make it like a formal barred-off report - as their teacher had asked. They sent letters back and forth until it became a seamless ritual that came as easy as breathing to Sanguinius. It was a foreign feeling to anticipate the flapping of wings coming to a rest at your windowsill, the sound of finely honed talons scraping across the clay that laid underneath, as he came to the aperture to unfasten the latest missive that was tied around its slender anklet. He had soon come to recognize the owl that Karlie used, with how consistent their letters had been. Sanguinius made it his habit to scratch the bird under the beak, and give it a treat or two as payment for flying all the way to where the Demarest Manor resided in Italy. It was still September, but the month was slowly ebbing away to the slight plunge of chill that October brought with its shorter days and longer nights. Sanguinius made a note to himself to bring a more thicker robe to combat the harshness of the cold that nipped at his skin the next time he had decided to step inside the tower. "This is ridiculous and beyond the box of absurdity." He groaned. Sanguinius found the steps leading up to the Owlery to be an immense source of frustration. Each step was steep and crooked, demanding his full attention as he navigated through their treacherous incline of gravity. He had to be vigilant about where he placed his feet, assessing each foothold with a keen eye to ensure he didn’t stumble or lose his balance from a sudden draft of wind. He took to placing a hand against the rough stone wall, using it as a guide as he carefully made his way up to steady himself and lessen the possibility of his death. The hooting of the owls grew louder with each cautious step, a sound that beckoned him to reach the top with increased pace. It was hard not to think, that the architect responsible for the making of the steps, must have harbored some deep-seated animosity towards anyone who might need to traverse them, for they truly felt like a war zone. If the foul stench that permanently filtered the air wasn't acrid at all, then it bordered on being nuclear once he had reached the top of the steps. The color white nearly obscured his vision, which gave him the awful reminder of why he barely came up to the Owlery at all. Sangunius had chosen to break off from the Demarest name, therefore he would have to find an owl that was the property of the school. With every owl now in his vicinity, it was hard to distinguish which exact one was not being used as a personal messenger, leaving him with the only option of choosing a random owl and hope for the better outcome. Finding an owl ho had been preening its chest, with greying feathers and the sheer emotion of displeasure depicted across it's coarse-like plumage, he pulled out the letter that had been hidden in his robes the whole trek, reaching far into his sleeve to present it in front of the owl. "Will you take this to Karlie Keys?" When the owl refused to pause or take notice of his presence in front of it, the corner of Sanguinius's mouth tilted downwards and he gritted out next, "Kar - lie K - e - ys. I have a mice to offer to you in my pocket, a trade, if you will." |

Writing was a very therapeutic pastime for Karlie. Not necessarily the thought nor creative description used for storytelling or revision, but more so the handwriting element. For at least one evening a week she would sit at her desk under candlelight and copy a few pages of a textbook. She meticously refined the gentle motion of sweeping a 'g' or a 'y's tail back onto the page line, the angle at which her quill nib touched the page, and the speed of her scribing. It was a silent and intimate activity she enjoyed very much. Her mother suggested that a quill-pal could add some excitement. Karlie would be able to use her beloved lettering set, interact with another young witch or wizard, and see if she could learn anything new about magic or her quill-pal outright. The idea was fine. In fact, the opportunity to talk about her learning would be a breath of fresh air, especially as it wouldn't be face-to-face. Her mother was a great ear and was very encouraging, but her sister would rather engage in a magic-speed-toy-broom-flying-comp in the garden (her words). If she was going to talk to someone her age about academics, through a letter was most certainly a preference. That awful bothersome small-talk about the weather and 'how you felt' was just pointless jibber-jabber. It could be avoided if you couldn't see their face, nor really care about them.
At first, the letters herself and this Sanguinius exchanged were perfect in her eyes. She was straight to the point and exchanged her knowledge and information, and he did the same. If he shared something Karlie was unaware of, she'd unscroll the letter in front of her mother, point to the line of interest, ask if this was correct or feasible, and her mother would dutifully confirm or deny. She never did deny. After a while, her mother said that her letters appeared a little drab and suggested to share a little more what was happening in the village or in her life; her quill-pal could get bored otherwise! So, rolling her eyes as she did, she would make a habit of inserting some sort of informality, such as 'the weather is warm right now' or 'Cambridge is lovely for a visit', or 'I hope you are well'. Her mother said this was pleasant. Karlie thought it was a waste of time.
Since the beginning of the school year, Karlie hadn't really had time to write or to really think about what to say in her letter. Only now, nearly a month after moving to Hogwarts, was she to post her letter to her quill-pal. This time, she did mention a few things such as her surprising sorting ceremony, how spectacular the castle was, and what classes she would be taking. To her surprise, writing the letter was a comfort. On the evening of the sorting ceremony, her nerves had taken her by surprise, and writing this letter had helped her somewhat. It was almost as if seeking guidance from an old friend. Although in her mind, Karlie surmised that was from the activity of writing the letter, not so much the reciepient himself.
The winding steps up to the Owlery were slippery and the cool September breeze seemed to snake through her sleeves, chilling her core. From the outside, the appearance of the Owlery was bleak and dreary - it seemed as if constantly shrouded by shade and chill. The hooting and squawking of birds was not so unfamiliar as it reminded her of her quaint hometown, yet she couldn't ignore the stench of the place. Reaching the top step and wrinkling her nose, she stepped into the Owlery and briefly looked for Dunbar amongst the audience of monochrome birds. Dunbar, the Keys' family owl, was a sweet and loyal messenger. Never did he bite or scratch. He was sat in the corner preening his feathers, and Karlie couldn't help but smile as she saw him settled comfortably in his nest. Ignoring the other student on the other side of the room, she walked over to him and mouthed a silent 'hello'. Dunbar hooted lowly as he turned towards her and craned his neck back, searching for a tickle under the chin. Karlie chuckled and obliged, her other hand reaching into her pocket for her letter.
"Time to stretch those wings, I think." she whispered with a smile.
As she pulled out her letter to Sanguinius, her thumb traced over his address. What was he doing? He was a similar age to herself - was he enrolled in school? Karlie supposed she'd find out in the returned correspondence. Just as she went to hand the letter over to her owl, the other student's words echoed around the room.
Karlie Keys?
Her eyes widened, whipping around to look at the boy. Had she misheard the hooting of an owl?
Kar - lie K - e - ys.
Her brow furrowed. No, she hadn't misheard. He was definetely saying her name. But why? She cleared her throat and stood up straight.
"That's my name. That's why your owl isn't reacting. I'm here." she said plainly.
"Is there something that you need? You can tell me now instead of fiddling around with that poor bird. It doesn't look the friendliest anyway. My owl is very friendly, he-"
Karlie stopped mid-sentence, her lips still poised to form the next word. Wait a second. This made total sense. A young boy around the same age as herself asking an owl to post a letter to, well, herself? She didn't recieve owls from many people at all, especially not children her age. Could it really be that this boy, whom she had been sending multiple letters to for the past couple of years, was her quill-pal in the flesh? A hot wave of nausea and anxiety rushed up through her stomach and into her throat. This was so unexpected and there was nowhere to run or hide. As if on autopilot, the rest of her sentence stumbled out after a long couple of seconds.
"-he is called Dunbar. Did I ever tell you that... Sanguinius?"

| ===== | ===== " 𝓓 unbar roughly translates to Summit Fort in Scottish Gaelic. " Sanguinius could feel the strands on the back of his neck bristling, the cold sensation of alarm washing over his body. The unexpected familiarity of her words stirred something within him; he did not recognize her voice, yet it was clear she knew more about him than he had anticipated from a stranger. Normally, such revelations would send him teetering over the edge of wariness, but this time, an inexplicable calm settled over him. Most people only recognized him as a branch of the Demarest family tree, a name that was steeped in expectation and obligation. Chuckling at the memory, " Numerous times in fact. I remember it took two letters of you gushing over that owl. How you had enough ink to write down all of what you said has always puzzled me. " He turned around, slowly at first to wane off the remnants of the not-so-rude awakening he had gotten. It was a regrettable reaction, one that had become all too familiar lately, like an unwanted visitor that lingered longer than necessary. Each deliberate movement was an attempt to steady his racing thoughts, to cloak himself in a sense of peace that seemed elusive to him - almost. Sanguinius took a deep breath, he needed to ground himself in the present moment, he was meeting his quill pal in person. " I suppose I shouldn't. It looked like it was about to nip my finger off. " His words felt like an echo amid the warbling of the owls, their mottled feathers scattered across the ground like the verdant fields of wheat. When he stepped back, they didn't inherently make a sound, but instead made a soft, muffled noise as they flattened under the underfoot of his shoes. After all, feathers weren't solid like glass - they didn't crunch nor break. If anyone with a keen ear had heard it, they either kept it to themselves or didn't speak. Sanguinius couldn’t shake the sense of ravenous intrigue that enveloped him as he studied her. This girl, Karlie, he supposed he should start calling her - who appeared to know him so well, stood before him, a living embodiment of the thoughts and emotions he had seen poured onto a page of parchment. There was a comfort in her presence, a feeling of abnormal cognizance that made the world around them fade into the background. But the strangeness of meeting for the first time hung in the air with unspoken statements, the potential for their friendship rippling just beneath the surface like vapors in the crisp, biting atmosphere. He wasn't sure if he should swoop her into a hug, crack a joke, or stutter out a gasp. Each option felt like a concept, far removed from his usual demeanor of being one step forward and two steps back. Glancing at her in a momentary lapse of silence, Sanguinius was caught between the impulse to express his delight and the urge to maintain his usual reserve. In the end, he had to speak. Sanguinius cleared his throat, holding Karlie's letter in his hands. " I never expected to meet you in such an ... enchanting place. I have to admit that this was not what I had in mind, certainly isn't an ideal for any lady at all. Yet here you are, standing in front of me, and it feels surreal - like a dream. How come have I never seen you around? You're in the same batch of first years, the amount of times we've passed each other must have been plenty.” |
