It was a sunny afternoon, and Poppy had finally got permission to go practice flying for the practical that was ever upcoming.

Flying was the one subject Poppy wasn’t good at yet. Every else seemed to have come easily. Charms was her strong suit, potions wasn’t too bad, even transfiguration hadn’t given her problems yet. Yet the stupid enchanted broom gave her issues. She was somewhat convinced that she was given a temperamental broom that was tired as being used as practice for first years. Surely once she got a broom of her own, nothing fancy just something to use for short trips, things would be fine. Yet her parent weren’t the type to give her a broom until they were sure she was doing well in her flying class. That left her in a short of paradox. The only solution she could think off was to spend her free time practicing.

She went through the motions that were taught durning her first flying class. Command the broom to her hand. That went better this time, she didn’t get any splinters at least. Then before she knew it she was up in the air, on her broom. She was only hovering to the height where her feet were just off the ground.

Ok now she just had to go forward, and when she attempted to do so she went at an unholy speed before she was able to get her broom to come to a sudden stop. Maybe she should go up? She flew five feet off the ground. That was too high wasn’t it? She looked around, hoping that no one except the staff that agreed to watch her for safety reasons, was around.

Dove wanted to think twice before doing what she was about to do. She remembered her first flying class and she shuddered while thinking of how she was scared to only imagine herselft on her broomstick. She couldn't deal with this, indeed, she was afraid of heights since her father put her on a broomstick even if she could barely walk. Of course, this traumatized her a bit, and now she just doesn't want to go to flying class again. However, she didn't have the choice, and she also was a good pupil, so she couldn't just skip classed like that. This was why she was still hesitating to practice outside. The problem was that she didn't know if she needed some permission to fly outside class, since she was only a first year. But she was too shy to simply ask an adult, or at least a prefect. So, she decided to walk and see if there would be someone outside. If yes, then she wouldn't go. It was to risky if someone saw her doing something that she may wasn't supposed to do. If there was nobody, then she would try flying for a little while. But not too much, she didn't really like taking some stupid risks.
Here she was, now, outside during this shiny afternoon. And, unfortunatly, she saw a girl flying in the air. "Ho no..." she thought, This would be for another time." But when she looked closer, she noticed that the girl was in her flying class, from what she remembered. So, did this mean Dove could fly too ? Of course, she didn't know at this moment if the other first year had some permission of not.
Before trying to approach some broomstick, Dove looked at the girl, and was quite impressed. Ho ! How she wanted to be able to fly like this, without any fearness in her !

Brave, fearless, flying: Poppy wouldn’t use any of those words to describe herself. She was terrified and could barely control the broom she was sitting on.

Seeing Dove here made everything worse. Of course someone had to be watching her struggle. She had a feeling this wasn’t going to reflect well on the Lytle legacy. She could hear it now ‘First time a Lytle goes to hogwarts and they fall off a broom right in front of their classmate.’ She couldn’t let that happen. Sure her dad didn’t really care but it wasn’t just for him, it was the entire Lytle family in Canada. She couldn’t reflect poorly on them.

She just had to fake it till she made it. She gave a slight smile to her classmate, and then lowered the broom till she was around a meter (three feet) off the ground. Perfect now she should be able to cruise about and any fall will be from a safe enough height.

She rather slowly turned her broom around in a circle before she grabbed on a little too tight and learned a little too far forward. She ended up zooming off and taking a sharp turn before lurching to a slower pace and making her way back to the castle. She survived at least! Didn’t even fall off, but she had to get the hang of controlling speed if she wanted to get an O. At this point she doubted she even get an E.

Dove was looking at her classmate while being lost in her thougts. She had two choices :
One, she could just go away and join her common room because, first, she still didn't know if she could fly here or if it was forbidden, and second, even if she tried to go on a broomstick she didn't want to seem ridiculous next to the other girl.
Two, she could breathe and go join the flying girl to try having some tips on what she could get away from her fears.
She really wanted to do the second option, however she didn't know she she could be able to. Of course, she already had some friends, and when she got back into her memories, she didn't remember their meet being awkward. But still, she was hesitating.
But after all, what was the worse that could happen ? The castle was very big, and even if their were in the same flying class that didn't mean all the students would be aware of her inabilities to fly.
She took a look at the girl who were seeming to join the ground, and went to her when she stopped flying.

"Hi, hum my name is Dove, I believe we are in the same flying class ?"

She didn't let her answer because she already knew it was the case.

"I saw you flying and I was quite... impressed ? I will be honest, I am affraid of heights, and I wanted to know if you had some tips to help me with it ?"

She ended up her sentence with a smile she hoped was not too weird. In her bac, she was discretly corssing her fingers, hoping for a positive response. Of course, this was stupide but... she particularly didn't want her to decline this. She was motivated to be better at flying.

Maybe she faked it a little too hard because she certainly hasn’t made it yet, and now one of her classmates, oh and housemate now that Poppy was able to get a better look at them, wants her help. She certainly wasn’t ready to be helping others. She wasn’t even sure if she was going to do well in the upcoming classes herself.

The last thing she wanted to do was let down the other girl though. “Sure, I can try and give you some tips. I’m Poppy, Poppy Lytle.” It was a good excuse for Poppy to get off her broom and enjoy the feeing of landing on solid ground once more.

“You remember the first lesson right?” Poppy dropped her broom and demonstrated the command to get it to rise up into her hand. “That’s actually really important. It gets you used to commanding the broom, if it won’t do the easy thing of going to your hand how do you expect it to do the difficult stuff later?” That was a rhetorical question, so Poppy didn’t wait for the other girl to answer. Instead she realized the other girl didn’t have a broom, and tried to look for a place to get one. Thankfully the staff member who had agreed to watch Poppy had gotten out a second broomstick, so Poppy was able to command that one to her hand then offer it to Dove.

Dove watched the brown haired girl, hoping her gaze wouldn't be to insistent. But when the other Ravenclaw agreed to give her some advice, she let a slight sight of relief escape her lips.

"My name is Dove Cullen. I will never thank you enough.

She said after Poppy introduced herself. She saw her getting of her brood and being on the ground, just like Dove was when asking the "famous question". She realised it wasn't very nice of her, disturbing someone who was still on a broom. But anyway, Poppy asked her if she remembered the first lesson.

"Yes of course I do. But to be honest, I had some difficulties to get my broomstick up, since I was a bit reluctant about it."

She listened her classmate telling her how important Dove needed to be able to command the broom. She felt a bit stupid about the idea that she could even do the easy stuff, so she felt her cheeks becoming red. She watched Poppy getting another broomstick from... adults ? She noted that yes, if she wanted to get on a broom outside flying class, she needed some authorization. When Poppy gave her the other broom, Dove put it on the ground and remembered her flying class, and that she needed to concentrate to get this broom up. But before, she needed to be sure about something :

"And, if I am able to do the easy thing, do you think I could deal with my fear of heights ?"

The name Cullen rang a bell for Poppy. She meet a lot of purebloods due to her family lines. Cullen wasn’t a pure line, but definitely a wizarding family. Poppy didn’t know enough about muggles to possibly recognize any of their family names.

Poppy really faked it too hard now. She took a moment to adjust her hair into a more secure bun so she would have a moment to think. She couldn’t promise anything she couldn’t actually control, like getting over Dove’s fear of heights. How ironic the girl named after a bird, in a bird house, is scared to fly. Poppy almost wanted to laugh at her observation but that would’ve been awfully rude of her so she kept a kind smile.

“It’s really up to you to decide if you’re going to conquer your fear of heights. Commanding the broom could definitely help though. When you’re in control it’s not as scary.” Poppy was halfway telling that to herself. She barely controlled the broom which is why each time she flew she felt her heart beating out of her chest. She just had to practice more, control the broom further, then flying would become a breeze.

“Also you want to be sure of yourself, like your casting the spell. ” She figured someone in ravenclaw would have at least one spell centered class they were good enough at to be confident in their abilities.

Dove didn't know why, but when she asked her question, she could notice that Poppy seemed like... didn't knowing what to answer ? Dove wasn't stupid she knew that Poppy adjusting her hair was only an excuse to find some time thinking before answering to her.
But, instead of offending her, Dove found it pretty nice. Like, the girl in front of her didn't really know what to do to help her, but still she was making some efforts to give her an answer, and whatever it would be, Dove will be grateful to Poppy. So, when she told her that control the broomstick could give her some confidence and then, maybe being less afraid of heights, Dove nodded and thought that this was a pretty good answer.

"Thank you, I'll remember that for when I am training."

She would like to talk more, but she noticed Poppy wanted to add something, so she listened carefully, and smiled at the end of her sentence. Unlike flying class, Dove was quite good in Charms class, she must have it from her father. And yes, when she casted spells, she was definitly more confident than when she was on a broom.

"So, this means that if I gain more confidence, I may face my fears easier ?"

She regreted her question right after asking it. It was obviously a summarize of what Poppy said, but she wanted to be sure she understood her.

"Well, thank you, really. I think you definitely helped me.

Poppy did not expect to be thanked for her help, if anything the thank you startled her slightly, but of course she knew better than to let that show. It would make her look ridiculous to seem shocked at a thank you. Then the other girl smiling when the charms advice seemed to resonate with her, wow. Is this what it felt like to help someone? It was so nice, not the warm and fuzziness that was sometimes described in books. It was calming, assuring. Somehow watching a girl realize the workings of magic made her more confident in return. If she could teach then she certainly could do.

Rather than shutting down Dove's question for being a summary she exclaimed, "yes exactly! You get it."

Poppy got on her broom stick and floated there for a moment as she listened to yet another thank you. She felt spoiled with gratitude. "You're welcome, and if you don't feel confident with the broomstick, just know if you act like you're confident the magic might not be any wiser."

Fake it till you make it, and if you fake it too hard it could still work out just fine. At least that is what Poppy learned today. Maybe she even made a friend while doing so.

After her final sentence, Dove realised she thanked Poppy two times... Like if one was not enough ? Dove was the kind of person who thanked people easily, but she was a little scared each time she could do this that the others found her a bit... annoying ? But anyway, she was watching the Poppy, waiting for her reaction, even if she realised she didn't notice any changes in her face. She closed her eyes a bit to evacuate the little stress that started to grow inside her, when Poppy talked. Yeah, she was right. Dove knew it was easy to trick our brain, like we can fake our laugh, but our brain will think it's a real one, so it will be benefic for us.
She liked this conversation with Poppy, and hoped that the opportunity will be renewed, because she felt she had made a new friend. Well, at least this was her feelings, so she would like to know it it was reciprocal.

"By the way, before leaving, do you think we could meet again ?"

Of course, she meant in other ways than classes, or when they will probably meet into the common room, so she specified it, hoping that Poppy's answer would be positive.
