Prompt 1:
The Barbarian | Write about an incident that would anger your character. Why would this make them angry? How do they deal with that anger?
Yolanda walked into the classroom uncertain of herself.
“Yolanda! Yo – Yolanda!!”
Mike? He had been in her school! He was a grade above her, (maybe 12 years old?) but they were in the same class now.
He had crisp – ironed? – clothes – a Black top and beige pants – the Uniform they were assigned. Black ankle socks, backpack, belt - everything matching the designated Uniform. Blonde hair styled nicely but out of his bright blue eyes. They had a humourous glint to them.
Yolanda looked down at her glittery pink socks; her mother had made sure they matched today...
"Wow Yolanda! How are you? You came too? Wow this is amazing! Why did you get to be in blue? Hey teach. TEACH. Whats up with the two colours ?"
*Teacher responds*
“My name is Mr. Andy but because this is your first day; I will chalk up the chatter to nerves.
The separate coloured Uniforms destinguish your Pod from your Classroom (two pods per classroom). Each classroom is split into 8 children per Pod and 16 per class – give or take a few persons.
You will either be in Beige bottoms and Black tops or beige bottoms and blue tops.”
“OH cool.” Mike smiled at Mr. Andy. “Well. Mister Andy, I’d like to be put into Blue.”
Mike looked over at Yolanda and winked.
“It matches my eyes,” he said playfully.
“We do not generally allow pod selection – unless it’s family. But if you can find someone to trade I may be able to assist you.” Mr. Andy said calmly.
Mike immediately started quizzing everyone wearing a Blue Shirt.
“Hey there, nice to meet you, what’s your name?” Mike smiled and stared right at a girl around Yolanda’s age and a larger boy, much larger boy, right behind her. Tugging at his blue shirt seemingly irritated by the fabric.
The girl looked done up – though they had the same clothes – you could tell her hair and was that make up? had been done to precision. She looked, Indigenous? Yolanda thought the girl was gorgeous.
“I overheard. I can’t. My brother and I are together and we have to stay together. Sorry about that… He isn’t going to trade so don’t bother.” The girl stopped Mike mid-sentence speaking for her brother. She seemed like a bold yet friendly type.
“Er- just asked your name…” Mike deflected.
“I’m *Elise*. and this is Aquene.” she said briefly. Turning away to show the conversation was over.
Aquene kept his eyes down, which was easy because he was tall, must have been 14. He looked friendly, but must be incredibly shy as he hadn’t said a word.
“OK that’s alright though! Onwards I say.” Mike kept gazing around for Blue.
“Hi! Nice to meet you; I’m Mike. You are?”
The boy stared at him blankly. Tinged with mild disgust.
“Jeremy.”
Jeremy didn’t seem very intent on becoming instant buddies with Mike.
“Well Jeremy, I need to switch to get in with My friend Yolanda, we know each other, you wouldn’t want to keep good friends from the same Pod would you Jeremy?”
Yolanda barely knew Mike… she wasn’t sure why he wanted to be with her so bad. Maybe he was in Boarding? It would be lonely on your own in this new spot… At least she had her family…
“No” Jeremy replied. Jeremy had a thick accent, Yolanda couldn’t place her mind on it. He had brown eyes and dark skin. He looked quite dashing to Yolanda.
“Oh Um do you know people here?” Yolanda chimmed in.
“No.”
“But it doesn’t matter; you get Black! That’s cool right? Not stupid blue.” Mike said getting a bit desperate.
“Blacks Stupid.” Jeremy was smirking now.
“C’mon man it’s no big deal; help me out.” Mike begged.
“No.” Jeremy was full out laughing now.
“What? It’s just a spot you can give it up dude.” Mike was turning red.
Jeremy cocked his eyebrow at Mike and without a word turned his back on him.
“Hey. HEY what’s up dude? What’s UP??” Mike was starting to get elevated.
“Everything okay there?” Mr. Adams said. Mr. Adams was a tall, fit man. Bald and in a teachers uniform, he towered over the class as he stood up. He was trying to look friendly as he spoke but was already quite intimidating.
Yolanda jumped up and grabbed Mike’s arm, pulling him away from Jeremy.
“All good!” she cried out hoping it sounded genuine… knowing it didn’t.
*Mike mumbled incoherently - something about seeking retribution - and moved on to the next blue shirt*
