Task 1: Generating an idea
What is your general idea/concept for your story? What is it about? This task is looking for you to write a synopsis or create some sort of plan for your story. It can be difficult to get over the first hurdle of simply starting, so it can help to even just start by writing out the ideas you have and forming them into a coherent storyline. Some examples of writing structures include Freytag's Pyramid and The Hero's Journey, which can be useful for helping to plan your story, but you don't have to follow if you have your own ideas. This task has a word count minimum of 200, and for completing it, you can earn 1 house point.
Task 2: World Building and Character Creation
This task is split into two parts: A and B. You are not required to complete both parts, but if you do, you can earn an extra 10 sickles alongside the rewards for each task individually.

Part A: World Building
Where is your story set? This task is looking for you to describe the setting of your story. Even if your setting is the world we live in today, it can really help to have a solid understanding of where your story is set and how that influences the choices your character may have to make. You can zoom in onto a city/town/village where your story takes place, or if you're feeling ambitious, explore creating your own world and describe how life works there. This task has a word count minimum of 200, and for completing it, you can earn 1 house point.

Part B: Character Creation
Who is the character(s) of significance in your story? This task is looking for you to describe the character(s) in your story. Well-developed characters can help to engage readers and make them invested in the story you are telling. Good things to focus on are appearance and why (for example, if they have constantly messy hair, why is it always messy?), interests, character strengths and flaws, and motivations for why they make the choices they make in your story. This task has a word count minimum of 200, and for completing it, you can earn 1 house point.
Task 3: Finding Time
When will you work on your story? This task is looking for you to create a schedule for when you will allocate time to write your story. Don't worry if you are unable to stick to it in the end - even creating a schedule is a great start! It can be difficult to find the time to sit down and write, especially when you lack the motivation and have such a large target to reach. However, I find that breaking your target down into smaller, more manageable goals on a more regular basis can be helpful in keeping up the motivation and not burning out too quickly (to reach 50,000 words in NaNoWriMo, that is roughly 1670 words per day, or 12,500 per week). This task has no word count minimum or individual completion reward, but if you complete it along with all of the other tasks, you can earn the additional rewards (1 house point and 10 sickles).

Task 1: synopsis
In the enchanting world of Veridara, where magic and nature are connected, lives Seren, a young Keeper who is responsible for keeping the balance of the natural magic. The peace in her world is disturbed when one of the Keepers of the Green Moon, a legendary protector of Veridara and also her mentor, disappears. It could outbalance nature and Seren decides to go on a daring quest.

Seren will be accompanied by Thorne, a young man with a mysterious past and a lot of traveling experience. Thorne is an outcast, but his knowledge of Veridara and his wisdom make him a valuable ally. While they travel through the regions of Veridara – from the enchanting Silvaquor to the floating mountains of Arclundra – they will confront magic creatures, old secrets and the challenges of their own relationships.

As they get closer to the truth and the missing Keeper, Seren discovers that Thorne has an unknown connection to the Keeper as his illegitimate son. The tension between them grows, but they learn to trust each other and develop a strong bond.

The climax of the story not only will reveal the truth about the Keeper, but also Thorne’s true heritage. In the shadow of the Green Moon they are forced to see their fears and embrace their responsibilities as Keepers. Eventually they not only find the answers they were looking for, but also their true destiny in a world that needs their help.

In the Shadow of the Green Moon Preptober 2024
Task 2: World building and character creation
Part A: world building

Veridara (~veriditas = liveliness or green power) is a magic world full of mystery and nature, where the four elements come together as a harmony. The world is divided into smaller regions, each with its own characteristics and inhabitants. The connection between nature and magic is deeply rooted in the structure, and the laws of nature are woven with the energy that drives the world.

Different regions:

space1. Silvaquor, the Enchanted Forest

A vast forest where trees and plants have consciousness and can communicate with some people. Some parts are harmless, but some parts are guarded by wild, magic creatures. The magic is lively and dynamic, and the Silvani, the inhabitants, use natural magic to keep the harmony in the forest. They can use the natural energy to keep themselves and their surroundings safe. The Grove of Life, the heart of Silvaquor, keeps the energy of nature in balance. If this place is disturbed, the forest could turn into chaos, which leads to a disturbance in the magical energy in the region.

space2. Arclundra, the Floating Mountains

This region exists of floating islands and mountains, connected by magical bridges of energy. The air is filled with colourful birds and flying creatures. The Lunari, the inhabitants, have mastered the air magic and can communicate with the wind. They move around on large magical creatures. The Tempest Stones, big crystals which contain the air magic and keep the mountains floating, are scattered over the area. A disturbance in these stones can create a lot of chaos.

space3. Calthera, the Lake of Mirrors

This lake is known for its clear water that reflects the sky. It has healing powers and the people who live near it believe it is holy. In the lake live the Aquari, the inhabitants who can breath under water and communicate using water magic. They protect the mysteries of the lake, such as the Mirror Gate, which leads to different parts of Veridara. Only few know how to open and operate this Gate.

space4. Thalorath, the Desert of Changing Sand Dunes

In this desert the sand dunes are constantly moving, driven by the magic of the wind and the earth. Travellers get lost often, as there is no clear path to follow. The Dunari, the nomads of the desert, learned to read these moving dunes and to navigate through the desert. At the heart the Oasis of Echoes can be found, a large library with the knowledge and history of Veridara. Only those who know the secrets of the desert, can be granted access.

space5. Glaciera, the Frozen Realm

This icy landscape is the home of the Frystan, who mastered the art of the ice magic. Under the vast ice fields lay forgotten cities and secrets from the past. The Frystan can use their ice magic to create ice and to protect their village. At the centre stands a large tower, the Frostspire. It is a legendary tower where the Frystan learn their ice magic and where the ice never melts.
Part B: character creation

1. Seren

Seren is a young Keeper, closely connected to nature. Her long, waving hair has a deep green colour, as if it reflects the colours of the forest Silvaquor where she lives. She has a pale skin with a soft glow, which gives her the appearance of a child of nature. She has bright green eyes which give a hint of curiousness and determination.

She often wears simple but functional clothing that doesn’t limit her in her movements: a tunic from natural material in brown and green, and some practical pants designed for exploring the forest. Around her waist she wears a belt with multiple little satchels for magical herbs and other belongings or findings. A delicate neckless, made from branches and leaves, decorates her neck and symbolises her bond with the forest.

Seren is brave and determined, but as she is still young, she struggles with the responsibilities for being a Keeper. She has recently come off age, and is now fully developing her skills, under the watchful eye of her mentor at the Order of the Green Moon, whose wisdom both inspires and pressures her. She isn’t certain this is the path she wants to take in life, but she comes from a family of Keepers, and thus was expected to join the Order. She still struggles to find her own unique identity, as she explores the forest around her, feeling the subtle pull of wild magic that surrounds her.

2. Thorne

Thorne is an intriguing figure who carries an aura of mystique. His appearance reflects the years he spent as an adventurer traveling Veridara and the challenges he won. He has an- solid, athletic build and is quite tall, which makes him an imposing appearance. His hair is a mixture of brown with some streaks of grey, with some strands dangling on his forehead, giving him an air of nonchalance and adventure. Thorne’s eyes have a deep brown colour and radiate wisdom and melancholy; they tend to tell the stories from his past, along with some painful memories.

He dresses himself in practical but sustainable clothes, fit for his nomadic lifestyle. He wears a leather jacket with lots of pockets to protect him from the elements, and his soft leather boots support his feet during long trips. On his belt he has all sorts of different tools along with some amulets he collected, each with its own story. He carries an old bag with him, filled with books and maps.

As a man with already a complex past full of adventure and regret, he has a complex personality. He is empathic and protecting, but can also be reserved, which comes from the fear of sharing his true self. At a young age he had lost his mother due to illness. They were always together, as Thorne doesn’t know who his father is and his mother never wanted to tell him. This event left him devastated, and alone. It made him self-reliant and gave him the opportunity to travel throughout Veridara. He may look rough, but he has a good heart and will always protect the weak, as they remind him of his mother who he couldn’t protect. It takes him a long time to really trust someone, but if he trust you, it will result in a deep connection. Although he will never admit it and pushes the feeling away, he wants to find his own place in this world, a place where he truly belongs.

In the Shadow of the Green Moon Preptober 2024
Task 3: finding time
It is a little bit difficult to write up an schedule for a whole month, since my work hours aren't regular and can change a lot. When I have a late shift I won't be able to write much, so I'll need to write more on the others days. I'll make a schedule for a random week, but this can shift as my schedule shifts.

Monday: 2000 words
Tuesday: / (late shift)
Wednesday: 2500 words
Thursday: 2000 words
Friday: 2500 words
Saturday: 3000 words
Sunday: 3000 words

If I can keep this up, it means I will write around 13000 words per week.
