ℑt was good to be back. His hometown smelled like the way before he left, it looked like the way before he left, the birds were still the same, the sights, everything was the same. The only thing that was remotely different was that Peter wasn’t to stay. He was in front of Brookline’s yard, catching up with Winnie and Brookline when he suddenly remembered when he first knew about leaving on that fateful day. May 22th, 2023. To this day, he absolutely hated that day. It was just too sad.
𓅪 the mermory𓅪
Peter saw his father, by the Quinns’ house, the older wizard’s hands were stuck in his pockets, and he looked like he was quite stressed. His father called out to his son, telling Peter that dinner was soon. Peter pouted, but nodded anyway. He, Brookline and Winnie were playing hide-and-seek with Brookline’s sisters, Marie and Minnie, in the field behind the Quinns’ and Jamesons’ houses.
“Bye guys! See you tomorrow?” The two girls nodded, sweat glistened on their faces, and they stalked back inside the field, to find the two Quinn twins. Brookline ’s brunette hair and Winnie’s platinum blonde hair was the last thing Peter saw it them before he sprinted to his stressed father.
“Son. We need to talk.”A strained, stressed, high-pitched voice met the young boy’s ears. “Yes, tad¹?” Peter inquired, his voice incredibly soft and calm. Impossibly almost. How could Peter be so calm when his father, usually a quite calm man, it seemed to soothe Brayden, as the tension between him and his son dispersed, almost immediately.
“Well, Peter, we’re... moving. To France.” Brayden grimaced, wiped a sweaty palm through his brown floppy hair, and started to wring his large hands together. “W-what? So y-you I’m not going to Hogwarts?” The boy held a large look of complete shock on his face like a pale white sheet. “No-no way. No way. No, I can’t. We’re just waiting on Win. Win just needs her first instance. N-no, you have to understand, dad. I can’t move.” Tears pricked the Welsh boy’s eyes. Merlin, that ‘dad’ had to sting. Brayden froze. He sighed, “I know. It wasn’t my idea. Its sucks, man, your-your mother got a new job. Y-you know, life as a muggle who has wizard kids is hard. I’m surprised she hasn’t passed out yet. ”
Father and son walked together in silence til they reached the very door of their house. “Tad? Do we have to move?” Peter asked, sighing, tears pricking his dark green eyes.
“I-I’m afraid we have to, Peter.”
As Peter sat on the grass, he nodded every so often when Brookline or Winnie would look toward the boy. He was thinking about when he had lived here, a block or so, away from Brookline and Winnie. Just a five-to-ten minute walk. When Peter walked past his old house, after arriving two days before, on July fourth, Independence Day. It had been a surprise for Brookline and Winnie. Today was July sixth, and Peter had a few more days left before he would go back to France with his family to get ready for summer camp.
Meow! A kitten mewed. It was Tigeress. Tigeress sat in Brookline’s lap, using her brown paws to ruffle Brookline’s skirt. Tigeress wasn’t a bad kitten, he decided. Just then, hot tears started to well in his eyes. Why am I crying? I’m here, in Ferndale, with my best friends. What is wring with me? He soon ditched his sitting position and rolled onto his back, looking at the sky.
Wales’ skies were pretty, but not prettier than France ’s blue skies, thanks to the Wales overcast of clouds, clouds, clouds. But July skies weren’t to bad, depending on the temperature. Today was warm, with clouds littering the skies, with just a hint of sun. Like a sun on a winter day, just much warmer. He wondered when he would stop feeling homesick.
I’m afraid we have to. Brayden’s words echoed in Peter ’s mind. One small tear fell, in the crook of his cheek and descended to the grass, the drop slipping down the short green stalk.

¹ oh? really?ℬrookline sat cross-legged on the damp grass, a warm breeze played with her long brunette hair, as a warm Tigeress slept the folds of her skirt, the sound of the rising and falling of the tabby’s chest soothing to her. It was July sixth, and to any Welsh Muggle who just happened to stroll down the not-very-famous street would just think: Oh, goodie. Those weird kids are back from boarding school.
Brookline and Winnie lived on the outskirts of quiet Ferndale. They loved it there and they knew Peter missed them and Ferndale. The Ravenclaw stared out in the distance, her dark blue eyes blank and glossy.
“Hey! Focus, Brooke. What’s wrong with you? You can tell me anything; I’m your best friend.” Winnie snapped her fingers in front of Brookline’s face. Her grey stormy eyes seems to shine as she leaned back into her spot. “Oh! Sorry, Winnie, blanked out.”
O? Mewn gwirionedd?¹ Brookline, you know I can see right through you.” Winnie glared at her friend, and Brookline’s eyes seemed to go left to right. “Ha! I told you. Now, Rook. What’s wrong?” Winnie’s searching gaze was stern. “Nothing.. or I don’t know. But, for the record, I did spaced out. And, in summary, you can’t talk. You fake it all the time!” Winnie pretended to gap and gasp, in a fake innocent voice, “Oi! Surly, not me? How art thou think such thing?”
“Oh, Winifred. You do i--” Brookline used her full name, which Winnie hated when people would call her Winifred. She really didn't like the way how the name ‘Fred’ was in her name. She always corrected people when they said Winifred. Winnie sweared and teasingly sing-songed, “Dude, don’t call me that! That’s not niiccee! You didnnn’tt have my connsenttt!”
Brookline smirked, her blue eyes sparking with mischief. “Of course, I do.”
“Who gave it to you, then? ‘Cause, I sure as hell didn’t.”
“Me.”
“No, you didn’t! I'm only allowed to! It’s my name!”
“And, I thought we were best friends... ” Brookline slyly said.
Winnie swore under her breath, and jabbed Brookline in the shoulder, hard. “Ow! Winnie, that hurt!” Winnie only smiled, and reached over to pet Tigeress, who was now snoring.
“Now, do you remember Alys, the cute girl? Who lived about two blocks away Peter? Well, she’s actually a half-blood! So.....”. Brookline blocked the rest out, she usually never wanted to listen to Winnie yap about her sad sappy love life. Two years before Hogwarts, Winnie would talk endlessly about someone for a week, then show up with them at her arm, all the time until Winnie would break their heart a week to two weeks later.
And, Brookline always asked her why Winnie even
even liked those people so young. Winnie started crushing on people when she was nine. It first started when a Muggle eleven-year-old boy would skateboard by their peaceful neighborhood, and Winnie started to talk to him. He had a jet-black mullet with light pale green eyes. Brookline would never get why Winnie even liked him. She always thought he was ugly and mullets were stupid. Despite Brookline ’s many attempts at talking Winnie out of it, Winnie still went ahead and asked the Muggle boy ask. Never knew why his parents always called Winnie and her friends odd, he went out with Winnie, even though the girl was only nine. Although ten days later, Winnie finally saw how toxic the guy was, and she broke up with him, declaring that he shall never speak to Winnie again. The muggle obliged, and he never skated near or at the girls ’ neighborhood again.
A couple of weeks before Brookline left for Hogwarts, all Winnie ever talked about was this odd girl named Alys, when they met in the dog park, walking their dogs. Alys had short dark hair with a green streak through it, and she had a poodle named Herbert. Of course, Winnie told Brookline more but did the Ravenclaw really care? No. Love is overrated, right?
But she couldn’t get herself to admit it. She liked someone, someone who was a nice guy and didn’t even go to Hogwarts. Brookline had the slightests feelings for Peter, although she didn’t know how to show it, after all, they were best friends. And what best friends would grow up and marry each other? She pushed away her feelings and tried to listen to Winnie but she cringed ever time she heard a word about Alys.
Then Tigeress woke up, her paws working to tear Brookline’s light blue ummer dress. She hoped the green grass wouldn’t stain her sundress. Tigeress meowed, telling the world she was still there. Brookline’s eyes drifted around as the girls fell in silence. Winnie reached over to grab the kitten and cuddled the kitten close. Her outfit looked cute today. The leaf patterning on her flair pants stood out and a black tank top kept cool. A string of silver was strung on her neck, and her white and brown sandals were kicked on her feet as she ran her fingers through Tigeress’ tabby fur.
Brookline felt her dark blue eyes drift over to Peter. He was around six feet away, on his back, his face stretching to the sky. She knew Peter missed Ferndale’s weather, he missed his house, he probably missed the town itself. But his beautiful emerald eyes were glassy and tears glazed his eyes. Then a small tear fell. Down into the grass. Brookline felt her eyes well up. Why didn’t Peter tell her and Winnie that he wasn’t feeling right or even sad? She inched closer to the boy.
“Peter? Are you okay?” Brookline looked at Winnie, and she had still a hold on Tigeress, and this time, her eyes were truly blank. Winnie was going to be no help if she was spaced out. Then Peter noticed Brookline was talking to him. He sat up quickly, “Of course, Brooke. I just realized how much I miss home. Here.” He clarified and nodded towards the direction heading to the neighborhood where he used to lived. Brookline furrowed her eyebrows. She wasn’t sure if Peter was telling the truth. He was averting her gaze. Stop being so stubborn, Peter Smith. Her lips turned into a sad frown. She sighed.
“You don’t look okay. You know even Winnie would know your are not okay so, look. Make this go faster. Why are you not okay?”
He ignored her question as sadness prickled in Brookline’s Heart. “You don’t look okay, either.”
She felt blue fire defensively flare and spark and burst in her chest, scrambling its way out. “Shut up! I'm okay!”
He was silent and she was silent. They were all silent.
When will he tell the truth? When would she confess about what she was feeling?

𝒫eter mentally scowled. He knew Brookline was being a kind friend but who would even understand his situation and school and, Peter sure as heck, would never admit about that one girl...
As the pair sat in complete silence, Peter sighed. An uneasy knot sat in his stomach. How was he ever going to explain even the major part? The minor part was something he’ll keep close to his heart, forever. Okay, okay, at least for a little while, He thought, as little voices got louder. He heard Tigeress meow, as if she would scent the uneasiness between boy and girl. The tabby was in Winnie’s lap, and her face looked liked she just gotten up from a heavy sleep.
“Guys?” The platinum-blondie said, her voice almost frightful, “D-Did I miss anything? Are y-you guys o-okay?” Winnie sounded scared, and it made Peter’s world rock. She was afraid that Peter and Brookline were having a silent argument, the Beauxbatons boy thought, as he rose his hand from his lap, and started to pick at the grass. The boy twisted his finger around the blade, until his finger was tightly wound around it. It burned but he kept it there, making his finger feel heavy and his finger now was lighter than before. Good. Let’s cut off this damn blood fl-
Peter gasped, feeling the tightness in his finger. He couldn’t believe he would think of such of a folly thing to do. He let go of the grass, clutching his discolored finger. How dare he do that? If his father had saw him or heard his exclusive thought, then he would definitely be darn-good dead meat. Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, the ground underneath Peter seemed to sway and sway and sway. He grabbed a hold of the soil that he and the grasses’ long brown spindly roots both were gripping. It seemed like he was going insane.
He thought he was going to puke. All feelings jumbled up, and his tongue felt dry and tangled together, and his palms suddenly became hot and sweaty.
Peter decided if he thought of the good things, these bad feelings would do away. He thought of beautiful France, his hometown, his wonderful school, his family, happy Aurélie Duval (@Ophelia Northwell); anything to keep him from crying.
He could hear Brookline and Winnie’s voices but couldn’t understand a single word. But once Brookline had put a soft, comforting hand on his shoulder, the ground instantly stopped swaying. He could hear his friends’ nervous, timid voices.
“Peter. Peter.
“Win-Winnie, is he having a br-breakdown? Should we go tell his parents? Some-?” The Ravenclaw’s voice cracked and suddenly stopped.
I-I don’t know,” Winnie’s face turned paler than a white-skinned ghost, then she turned to Peter, gently shaking his shoulder. “Peter. A-Are you okay?...”
Peter glanced up to his two friends. They really did cared for him. He sighed, and realized he had embarrassed himself, though he didn’t know what he did, he was sure he had embarrassed himself for sure.
“Uh, I’m fine. Just I don’t know what to do. I-I think I’m going in-insane.”
