Rose shook out her wrists, then took her stance. Everything came back, like she had never been gone. Her stance was firm, with her torso angled to the side and her gaze forward. She found this gave her a lower chance of being hit, while not sacrificing her power.

She missed dueling over school breaks. Whenever she needed to blow off some steam or calm herself, or just got an itch to cast spells, she couldn't. And summer break, two months, was a long time to have her wand on her desk, sitting pretty, doing nothing. Through the first week of school, it felt so good to get back in the groove. To start learning and studying, structured around a schedule. It was refreshing to learn new spells and practice the old ones.

Don't get me wrong- Rose enjoyed summer break just as much as the next student. It was good to take care of herself, earn a little money through babysitting, and see her mom more. (And not sit through history lectures, which were boring even for Rose, a fairly good student.) She enjoyed being in Godric's Hollow, but Hogwarts was her home, too. And she found she missed the castle, its quirks, and most of all, magic.

All that to say, Rose couldn't wait to get back in the dueling room again, and here she was. The dummy seemed to stare back at her. She started simple, with one of the spells that came most naturally to her. "Flipendo." The spell shot towards the dummy, but seemed to veer off to the left and hit the wall, doing nothing. The wand movement was a little messy. "Flipendo," she said, a little firmer, and corrected it. Precise and exact, the spell hit the dummy in the chest this time.

Oh, the satisfaction of landing a spell. It was exhilarating.

Rose cast spell after spell towards the dummy, feeling the adrenaline rush. With every mistake, she made corrections until she was satisfied. She lowered her wand, pausing to catch her breath a little. Now, a more complicated spell. Past the usual fire, blindfold, and knockback, as well as spells she learned back in her early days at Hogwarts, Rose decided to move up just a little. The Leg-Locker Curse.

"Locomotor Mortis," she said, with such strength that not only did the spell miss, but it rebounded towards her. "Protego!" she cast a shield, quickly, and watched as it dissipated. The Shield Charm was definitely a good one to know, she said, and laughed a little to herself. That time it had veered to the right, so... "Locomotor Mortis!"

Perfect shot.

Despite usually opting for the silence of her common room, Iris quite liked the duelling club. From a bystanders perspective, that is, living vicariously through the students who wielded their wands with such ease. She admired it, in a way.

Today however, Iris hadn't been alone in her typical observation. Upon arrival she'd spotted Rose almost immediately, her face a familiar one amongst the few duels she'd attended. If not for that, then simply for the determination fixed on her features. Lingering at the door, dark eyes watched as the older girl cast out spells at rapid fire. For a moment her gaze drifted down to her own hands, silently considering the lines etched across her skin. Faint scars from potion spills, and ink stains that never quite washed away no matter how hard she scrubbed. Hands that were meant for more than turning pages, yet she’d never really allowed herself to expand on the thought.

Another spell cracked through the air and Iris’ eyes snapped back to Rose, watching as a shield of light deflected her previous cast. Impressive, really. There was no hesitation, no second guessing. Just real, raw power. For a second she even considered what it was like, to be so completely certain in one's movement. You wouldn't find it in a book, she knew that much.

As her wand finally lowered, a feeling stirred quietly beneath the second year. An intrigue that coaxed her forward, just enough for her voice to break the silence. “You’re good.” Though the words felt subpar at best, they were the truest ones she could offer. She then hesitated, feeling the weight of her next question forming on her tongue. “How long have you been duelling?”

Rose whipped around at the voice. She had been so lost in herself and her spellcasting, she hadn't even noticed the other student enter the room, and wondered how long she had been there. Her cheeks flushed a little at the compliment. "Oh- thank you." It had taken years of dedication and work to get where she was at the moment, and Rose couldn't help but be a little proud of it. She didn't know exactly what she was doing after Hogwarts, but she was probably going to miss dueling, and she had two more years to make the most of it.

Rose hadn't met the girl before, but she was pretty, and if Rose had recognized her, she probably would have thought she was in her higher years because of her mature appearance. However, Rose probably would have at least known who she was if she had been going to school with her for five or six years, like the fifth, sixth, and seventh years at Hogwarts. So she did assume that the girl was probably younger than her.

She then asked how long Rose had been dueling. "This will be my... fifth year on the team," she shared. Though to herself, the first year she had been on the team didn't really count. She had lost every single duel that year miserably, and it wasn't until the next school year that she actually gained some skill and traction. The feeling of winning was so exhilarating, and so rewarding. She went to sit down on the edge of the stage, letting her heartbeat slow and her breaths calm down. "But the other duelists around my age are really good, so it's good to be able to practice in here. What brings you to the dueling room?" she asked, picking up her water bottle and taking a sip. Like her friend had once told her when he found her in here, you had to stay hydrated.
