He had defense against the dark arts first thing in the morning, and well, he didn't like it. Not because of the class in it's whole, it was mostly the subject. Oliver was very quickly finding out that spell and wand work was not really what he was good at. Herbology, History of Magic, those types of classes with not a whole lot of spell casting. It was quite annoying. As some muggle borns were doing better then him. What took him three or four tries, took them one or two. That, was very annoying.

After all, he was pure blood, So he should be able to get it first try. He was chalking it up as nerves from it being his first classes. As well as the sorting. That was it. He just kept telling himself that, even if it may be a lie. He was just trying to make himself feel a bit better.

Also this one kid, this one kid that wasn't helping his fondness for the class at all. Eric something. Always raising his hand to answer questions, hand always up when Oliver's went up. As Oliver knew the answer. He figured that if he couldn't cast spells super great right now, he would be able to answer any questions.

And Eric seemed to know the answers to. So annoying. When Oliver walked into class after breakfast he saw that most seats were full. The only one open, was next to Eric. "you've got to be kidding me..." He muttered under his breath, and grumbled something about this being 'just his luck' as he walked to sit.

Once sat, he didn't really look at Eric, instead choosing to pull his book, quill, ink and parchment, and anything else he may need out. All with a hint of annoyance when he placed it all down on the desk. Not happy that he had to sit next to his not official rival, but also sort of rival in his head even if it wasn't said.

"Morning, Eric." He said to him. He could be a little bit nice. Not a whole lot, as he had a bit of annoyed tone. But he did greet him, that was nice enough. He wasn't expecting anything in return. He didn't know Eric at all really, just his name from when the Professor called on him. And that he knew most answers.

He was already ready with the books and quill as well as his wand by the time Oliver showed up in class. To say that they were rivals would be a bit of an overstatement, and an understatement at the same time. It was clear both were trying to get as many answers right as they could, it was almost a...competition of sorts if one could say that. Did he take it a way to sort of broaden his own knowledge and push his own limits? Yes. Did he take it as a way to try to get the answers first? Also yes. Was it in a mean way? Not necessarily. He saw it as a healthy way to improve.

Though he was sharing the thought of the "misfortune" of being next to Oliver. That being said Eric never really was mean to Oliver either. He found no reason to be. So when the Slytherin first year greeted him, Eric found it fair and polite to greet back. "Hello Oliver." Nonetheless he didn't talk further than that. So it seemed they were at most just as close as to just greet each other more so out of formality than anything else.

And once again, as soon as the class started, the formality was thrown out the window as he went into a mindset of a slight competitiveness, raising his hand, answering, taking notes. It did not really help that he had a passion for defense against the dark arts among a few other subjects. So in a way, compared to other classes, this was a forte almost.

It was one of the questions though that he was stuck on. And he didn't know what to answer, which was a bit frustrating here. Especially as Oliver seemed to know the answer and soon that proved to as Eric's "rival" answered almost immediately here. And if any other person would have been here against Oliver it might be fine, they may be letting it go and just go on with their life. Well that didn't seem to be the case here. Whether this made Eric be more competitive than before, or it was just him being frustrated with not knowing the answer, who knew? But one thing was clear...he was going to do his best, to not have this happen again.

He let out a small hum as Eric returned his greeting. If anything to let him know he hear him. Not a morning, but a hello. That was fine. Oliver didn't care. Totally. He adjusted the stuff to keep his hands busy until class started, aligning the parchment to be centered, the ink pot on the top right part of his desk, and the book open on the left. Quill in hand. Ollie was ready for class.

And like the other times they had been in class, not a whole lot as it was still very early in the school year. Oliver and Eric seemed to raise there hands almost in sync. Oliver giving a small annoyed looked when Eric got it right, and then a smug one when he got it right.

Of course taking notes as they went about the lesson. His notes were very neat, and organized, it was something he took pride in. Knowing exactly were everything was, in his notes. So that was why when it seemed that Eric didn't know the answer, Oliver looked at his notes, if only to confirm he would be right, to answer it. Of course, correctly.

He couldn't help himself, smirking and looking at Eric out of the corner of his eye. A silent way of telling him he got it right. "Don't worry, you might be able to get the next one." He said it, somewhat sounding polite. But the smug tone was hard to go unnoticed. Oliver couldn't help it.

He liked being right, and he liked winning to. No matter how he tired, the smirk wouldn't go away. Sitting next to Eric, it made Oliver want to make it known he knew the answers. He wasn't good at casting, he did know how to keep knowledge in his brain. He might be the only eleven year old to prefer lectures over practical lessons, for times like these. Were he could really shine in a way.

Ok...ok...fair game. Fair point. It did hurt a bit given he took plenty notice of the smugness. But if anything that just determined him more here. And every time he would get the answers right now, he would return the polite favor of "Don't worry, you might be able to get the next one." right back at Oliver. Was this petty at this point? Yes....did that matter right now? No. All was fair in this "war" of knowledge as far as Eric was concerned.

This whole charade turned into a rather...amusing show for the rest of the students though. As a visualisation, Eric and Oliver were both trying to one up each other here with the answers, each coming up with more and more right responses to the teacher. At this point it was like they were stealing the whole class to themselves. And every time one would get it right the other seemed to take it as a personal mission to do even more.

It was in a way amusing, in a way maybe not so much since Eric did catch a few gazes that looked a bit shocked or even a bit frustrated with this going on. But well...he wasn't the only one guilty of this behavior.

One time, two times, three times, three wins in a row. He was tempted to be even more petty and turn a bit to smirk, but he held back on that. No...that would be mean...he didn't want to be mean. After all this competition was in fair terms still a "friendly" one to some extent. Nonetheless the temptation proved to be quite a pain to deal with. And while he was debating on this, he noticed Oliver got another few questions right. And back it went to this competition. Back and forth back and forth for quite a bit. Eric could swear him and Oliver were tiring the teacher by now, though to be fair he wouldn't know for sure.

Nonetheless as in any fair competition, Eric was occasionally throwing impressed gazes to his adversary. Here and there even genuinely congratulating him for getting it right, without the sass or smugness at all. It was a genuine acknowledgment of an equal in this competition.

They were really hogging the answers weren't they? Oh well. Maybe if the other kids raised there hands nearly as fast as Oliver and Eric, then they could answer questions to. Wasn't his fault he was smart. There was a few questions he had to think a bit about, three times in a row. Three times. Eric got it right three times in a row, he shot a small glare out of the corner of his eye. Did Eric deserve that? Not really, He was just being a tad to competitive.

So of course, Oliver had to get some right in return. He couldn't loose even if there wasn't a real way to loose. It was just answering questions in class. It was never that serious. He kept taking notes as the lesson going on. And even some note's when Eric got an answer right, as well, he had to admit some of his answers were pretty good.

Part of him wanted to praise these answers, but he held back, after his somewhat snide remarks as well as his glare. He had to keep the look up. And he wasn't that impressed. It was just a few good answers to a few questions. Anyone would be able to do it. Like Oliver himself. Though he couldn't help a few looks when he got it right, taking a peek at the other boys notes, trying to see if his were better then Oliver's.

He let out a small hum as Eric seemed to get another one right, making sure he got the next one. Probably giving to much detail, and a bit to much information needed. Though he just told himself the more detail the better.

This seemed to once again, as before in other classes, continue for the better part of the remaining class time. And when class was over, Eric started to take his things and get ready to go to the next class. While getting his stuff arranged a thought seemed to have gotten stuck in his mind. And it was not the first time such thought even was a thing. Ever since he met his rival in knowledge there was this (back then) not so significant idea that they could in a way make use of this "competition" to...well get better themselves. In a way...be study budies...while also maintaining this sort of sportsmanship of competition on who gets more answers right and faster.

As the thought crossed his mind again though, he pushed is back once more. There was no such need for that really. They both seemed really confident and it was easy to tell they were both aiming to be top of the classes. And yet...the thought came back, again and again every time he was pushing it away it was once again returning in his mind.

"Do you want to study for defense against the dark arts together at some point?" There...he said it. No turning back now. Then again, worst came to worst this offer would be refused. Though really personally Eric saw this as merely...a challenge for both of them. And once again a sort of...subtle acknowledgement along the lines of: Hey we are both at a similar level of knowledge and competitivity...might as well use this in our advantage.

Whether or not Oliver would agree to it, it was not really up to Eric as he finished packing up here giving one more glance in the boy's direction as if waiting for an answer. May as well get one before heading out anyways.

Like everything in life, class had come to an end. Oliver was happy with how it had gone. He answered a lot of questions; he really liked the way his notes turned out. Easy to read and really well done if he did say so himself. Oliver had been packing up his stuff when Eric asked the question.

It seemed a little out of the blue and caused Oliver to pause in putting his notes away. He looked over at the Gryffindor boy. Would it be a good idea? They did have the same nature it seemed. "I don't see why we cant." He really didn't, Oliver did love studding, and felt like Eric could push him a little more then he was pushing himself.

"Any day in particular?" He asked Eric, as he got back to putting the rest of his things away. He wanted to make sure he had all of this in order before anything was fully set in stone. That he wouldn't be late for it. Etc, etc. "I think I should be free, so just pick a date." He put his bag over his shoulder. "How does the library sound?" He felt that was fir, Letting Eric pick the date, and he got the location.

Oliver wasn't sure what to feel right now, still thinking of Eric as a rival of sorts. Even if Eric didn't think the same. He also wasn't sure if rivals could really be nice to each other. But he could at least try to be nice to the boy. Not really having a reason not to be.

His mind went a bit to the countless books available in the library. Yeah seemed like a fair place to do this. Moreover, it was maybe also the quietest, so it allowed for some proper studying. "Library sounds good, I have some free time before my next class, we can go now or just arrange for some other time." he seemed to check something before continuing. "I am free tomorrow afternoon as well. And then the day after tomorrow as well." Eric continued listing his free time, careful to leave some for...well..not study for school but self-study for things that were not class related mostly.

"If you are free now, let's just go to the library. I have the charms homework to do, and the seating is next to the bookshelves with books regarding defense against the dark arts." That was to say maybe they both needed a bit of a refresher given that they each missed some of the questions the other gave the answers to.

This..."alliance" so to call it, was certainly odd and unexpected. Eric wouldn't have thought they would even reach this point, as little progress as this was to begin with. Not that he planned on more progress for now. To some extent he still saw Oliver as a rival, but maybe not in the same way Oliver saw it. Sure, Eric had a similar sense of "responsibility" to "keep up to expectations" and he didn't want to disappoint his family. But he also didn't see competition fiercely, if anything he was glad he had something to think about outside of class lessons and homework, even if that revolved around some sort of rivalry, that in itself was linked to the aforementioned stuff.

Oliver nodded as he said that Library worked. Then he paused and let out a few hums, Thinking about what he had said about the time's. He was free most times as well. But was he up for it right now was the question. "I think that could be done," He said putting the last of his things in his bag. Slinging it over his shoulder. "Charms you said?" Oliver had to do that as well. Just needed to get the homework from his dorm.

"I just need to get the work from my dorm." He told Eric. Now it seamed he would be meeting him after class. He looked over at the Gryffindor "I suppose I will meet you there." Without waiting for a response Oliver would leave the defense against the dark arts class, leaving Eric to his own affairs before the meet up.

He made his way down the the Slytherin common rooms, and grabbed his things. Not to sure what to think about this whole thing. He didn't like Eric, he knew that. All because, as far as Oliver thought, Eric thought he could take all the answers in class. And Oliver wanted to be the one. But he did enjoy studying. So he could do it, the nature of the two would hopefully make it an effective session.
