to strike or to stand?
Defense Against the Dark Arts had always reserved a liking in Iris.
This lesson was no different, the words Offensive vs. Defensive etched onto the board for their personal viewing pleasure. The homework had been to form an opinion for today’s debate, though Iris hardly needed much to draw a conclusion. Now seated at her usual spot, her quill rested idly on her parchment as the room hummed with murmurs. The prompt held no real weight for her. After all, some things didn’t need to be overthought.
As students trickled in, the familiar buzz of conversation filled the room. Iris leaned back in her chair, observing with idle interest. There were always those who couldn’t wait to jump in, hands already twitching with the need to speak. Their energy was visible, the kind of restless excitement that Iris never really understood. She rolled her quill between her fingers, letting the discussion build around her. Some students had already started, tossing out bold claims about their own bias.
Offense was predictable. All well and good of course, that is if you trusted yourself to always be more precise than your opponent. But one misstep, one failed spell, and all that bravado falls apart. She didn’t need to jump in right away to prove her point. A few Gryffindors in the back seemed to share her lack of urgency, though not to be compared. Their silence wasn’t so calculated, a sign of disinterest if anything.
As silence once again swelled the room, Iris raised a delicate hand. “Offensive magic may win a duel.” She began steadily. “But defensive magic wins the war." The words hung in the air for a moment, then pressed forward. "Anyone can throw a spell, but it takes far more skill to withstand one." The following of a "Right?" should have come after, at least it would have had she not already been self assured.

Defense Against the Dark Arts came among those subjects Prat rather leaned towards, his interest however aligned more towards Dark Arts then it's defense.
Forming an opinion for the debate presented before him, Prat did not have to waste a huge amount of time to draw a conclusion based on his own opinions and ideology. This wasn't his usual action, on most occasion he'd sit there and ignore the words being uttered by his peers. Duelling however was much like a first love where he could not in his best ways hold himself back for interjecting and adding his own thoughts to whatever conversation that was already proceeding.
The idea of Offense vs Defense was nothing he had to think too hard on, before he made up his however another girl spoke up after a while into the Lecture. Duelling seemed like an interesting topic among not only his friends but rather the whole class. Perhaps it was obvious how the sport involving the most direct use of magic would attract audience from all sides while also their opinions and excitement. In the buzz of conversation that followed several arguments were made among the over excited crowd buzzing with energy upon the topic. Yet none of those were enough for Prat to even think about changing his approach towards the idea of Offense vs Defense or even duelling as a sport and in his strategies for it.
A lot of the students were opinionated about it, perhaps a bit much to the point their biases seemed to slip in an opinion they claimed to be simply "factual data".
As silence finally set in the room , some one else raised their hand and began with “Offensive magic may win a duel.” “But defensive magic wins the war." While he did not reject the notion Prat also wasn't very eager to believe it. As she continued with "Anyone can throw a spell, but it takes far more skill to withstand one." If Prat could roll his imaginary eyes in the 4th wall camera any harder, he would.
These words seemed absurd to him. Who in their right mind would want to withstand one? Prat raised his hand as he began his counter on the previous comment. Looking at what he assumed was a second year just like him as they shared same Class, He began with," Small battles are what make up a war, you can't win wars without winning battles." With the first one covered he moved onto the next one with "As for how defense and offense stand, who in their right mind would want to attempt to withstand magic when we have magic potent enough to murder people if someone had the intention." Prat sighed a little,
" Wouldn't you rather do it before they can or just prevent it?" Adding a pause in between to adjust his next words "What ensures you're strong enough to even defend against it in the first place, be the first to hit, hit hard and hit fast."
