There's No Place Like Home

The Devane family hailed from Derry, Ulster, in Northern Ireland. Records trace the family's origins back to the sixth century. However, in the 18th century, the vast majority of Devanes emigrated to North America, while only a small number settled in England.

Amelia Devane was born on July 21, 2013, the second child and first daughter of Katherine and George Devane. Her older brother Scott was born in 2010, and her younger sister arrived in 2015. Katherine's family was from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, while George hailed originally from nearby Treeton. The couple had met on a muggle bus in 2009 and quickly fell into a whirlwind romance.

After their marriage, Katherine became a stay-at-home mother and later housewife, while George pursued his passion for driving buses rather than entering a magical field. He did once aspire to join the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts department at the Ministry of Magic but decided that first-hand experience in the Muggle world was better than working at the Ministry. On the plus side, he was working directly with buses, a fascination of his. Some liked trains, some likes planes, George liked buses.

Their modern muggle home had several magical enhancements, including self-washing dishes, moving picture frames showcasing their children, and self-making beds. Situated at the end of an estate, the house had a garage for the family's muggle car and an iron gate for privacy. Amelia's favourite feature was the large, backyard that her father charmed to never rain.

It's My First Memory

Amelia's first vivid memory is tinged with uncertainty. As a young child, she recalls playing at the nearby muggle park with her brother Scott. They were happily sliding down the slide and swinging on the swings when two older girls pushed Amelia off the swing, causing her to fall and scrape her chin on the ground. Amelia believes she was around three years old at the time, but Scott insists she was closer to five, since their sister Laura had already been born by then. Amelia can still picture the girls pulling her pigtails and tossing her doll around. However, she cannot remember how she eventually retrieved the doll, or how she got home separately from Scott. All she recalls is her mother scolding her for leaving Scott and returning with her hair dishevelled. Amelia doesn't know if Scott faced any consequences for not coming home for two more hours.

Are You A Good Witch Or A Bad Witch?

Scott was up to his usual antics, and this time he had a particularly elaborate plan in mind. He placed a bucket of cold water precariously on the top of the door, grinning mischievously as he imagined the moment when seven-year-old Amelia would unwittingly open it. When Amelia finally approached the door, her mind was elsewhere—probably focused on her most recent book, she pushed the door open. With absolutely no effort at all, the water seemed to freeze mid-air, transforming into a block of shimmering ice. As the ice hit the floor, it shattered into what felt like a million tiny pieces—sparkling and sharp like glass shards scattering across the room. Amelia stood there, wide-eyed and stunned for just a heartbeat before anger surged through her. It wasn’t just the prank; it was that she had accidentally used magic for the first time, and not the way she had imagined it.

● Katherine Devane | mother ●

The relationship between Katherine and her daughter is a loving one, probably because she had wanted a daughter when Amelia finally came along. She encourages her to use her mind, to endure even when things get tough, and that she is always the best version of herself.

● George Devane | father ●

Because George is overly fascinated with the muggle world, he has chosen to bring his children up with minor magical interference. The reason being that he had a rough relationship with his own parents who believed that George shouldn't care so much about muggles and that he should have gone into a more prestigious employment. While he hasn't always been home to develop a relationship with Amelia, he has invertedly taught her to always be true to herself.

● Scott Devane | brother ●

Scott Devane was disappointed that the births of Amelia and Laura were both girls. He began pranking at roughly six years of age, meaning Amelia was around three and Laura around one. The two girls began to see his actions as mean, which they were intended to be yet look unsuspicious to his parents, and they grew up with a strong dislike for him. Scott doesn't care that his sisters don't like him because he doesn't really like them.

● Laura Devane | sister ●

Her sister is less than two years younger than her, which attributes to the two having a close sisterly bond. They were dressed the same as children, were into the same toys, had the same friendship groups, and could have been twins were it not for the fact that Amelia is blond while Laura is a little darker. She would bend over backwards for her sister.

● Caroline Devane | paternal aunt ●

Her paternal aunt, the golden child of her and her elder brother, was and is always given the best of everything and first choice. Her children are treated like gold themselves while Amelia and her siblings are pushed to the very back of the shelf, if at all on the shelf. Caroline doesn't speak up on behalf of her brother and insists she is doing nothing wrong. While Amelia doesn't know everything that's happened in the past, she dislikes her aunt.

● Isabella Devane | cousin ●

While Isabella has much more compassion for her cousins, she is spoiled by her single mother and her grandmother (the same grandmother as Amelia). She is much more reserved and quiet when Matilda begins to bully their cousins, and she usually leaves the room but doesn't say anything to anyone. Amelia, while understanding what she is doing, doesn't understand why and still doesn't like her.

● Matilda Devane | cousin ●

Amelia doesn't get on with Matilda because she is very spoiled by her single mother and her grandmother (the same grandmother as Amelia). Matilda often teases bullies her about her parents occupations and the fact that she is much poorer than she and her twin. Amelia says she is the cousin she dislikes the most.

● Mary Ann Devane | paternal grandmother ●

Her grandmother is stubborn and will give the silent treatment all too often. Mary Ann is the main reason that George and his children have nothing to do with them; believing that George and his wife should have gone into magical fields of employment rather than sit comfortably and happily in their muggle world. Amelia always heard negative conversations about her grandmother through her mother and father and has since realised that she more than likely wouldn't want a relationship that felt like it was always on her grandmothers terms.

● Robert Devane | paternal grandfather ●

Because her father doesn't have anything to do with his father, Amelia doesn't have much of a relationship with her grandfather. He cares that they haven't built up a relationship but doesn't say anything because he's more of a pushover when it comes to his wife dictating what happens.
