In preparation for today's lesson, Zahid had gone to one of the bigger cities over the weekend to see if he could acquire some broken glasses from an optician to use in today's lesson but that had been an exercise in futility and in the end he had resorted to buying a whole bunch of cheap sun-glasses in one of the supermarkets instead.

He wasn't entirely sure how it came to be that History of Magic taught these, well, extracurricular – for lack of a better word – classes to teach the students some spells, but he relished in the opportunity to also teach a more practice-focused class on occasion. He was quite curious to see how the students would fare with learning a new spell today. He supposed that different students would shine in these lessons than the ones that did in his normal lessons.

With a slight smile he entered the classroom and made his way towards the front. As he came to a stop and leaned against his desk, he greeted his students. “Hello class. Welcome to today's more active lesson. You will be learning a new spell today.” The excitement that showed in his students faces was one he rarely glimpsed in normal lessons. “I am sure you have all noticed the damaged sun-glasses – those are glasses meant to protect your eyes from the sun – on your desks. The spell I will teach you today is the so-called Eye-glass Repair Charm. Can anyone tell me its incantation?”

Looking at the class for an answer, Zahid picked a red-haired Slytherin boy out of the four students that had raised their hands. The boy very rarely actively participated in class, so he used the opportunity to call on him. “Mister Braden.”

“Oculus Reparo.”

“Correct. 3 Points to Slytherin. The incantation is Oculus Reparo. Please carefully note the proper pronunciation: OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh.” As he spoke he grabbed the glasses that were placed on the desk next to him and held them up. They were taped in multiple places. Zahid had spent quite some time Sunday afternoon deliberately damaging or breaking all those sun-glasses so that the students would be able to repair them during the lesson. Holding the glasses in his right hand, he drew his wand. Tapping the glasses he made sure to enunciate clearly, Oculus Reparo.”

He watched as the glasses repaired themselves then turned back to his students. “As you can see there is no complicated wand movement to this spell, you merely need to tap the glasses with your wand. Now, please try vocalize the spell's incantation a few times without using your wand to get the hang of it and afterwards you can try out the spell on the glasses in front of you on your desks. When you succeed in your spell-casting, feel free to break the glasses again so that you can practice the spell some more.”

With a satisfied nod he observed as the students went about first practising the incantation and then the actual spell. After a moment he pushed away from his desk and made his way through the rows of students occasionally correcting their pronunciation and noting their successes.
OOC/Reminder: In your very first lesson with him,
Zahid has asked all of you to call him Professor Zahid.

Lallie had no idea why the History of Magic teachers of all people kept teaching these extracurricular classes, but they were. They probably wanted them to have a better reputation with the students which made sense. She didn't mind spending some of her free time learning about a new charm with them. Sure the curriculum the History of Magic teachers taught could be a bit boring and drone on, but they were still very nice and helpful.

Lallie knew the spell that she was about to be taught all too well. Of course, she didn't actually know how to perform the charm, but her father always had to use this charm to fix, as her father put it, 'Those infernal reading glasses'. Lallie had no idea how he always broke them, but he did.

Lallie made sure to get to the History of Magic class early. She was on the smaller side so if she was late she ended up having to stare at the back of another student's head. Walking into the classroom there were a couple of other kids there, but it was still rather empty right now. She chose a seat in the front row and sat down. Looking at her desk she saw a pair of beat up glasses with darkened lenses. She wondered why the lenses were so dark.

Her question was answered as Professor Zahid started the lecture. 'Huh, they protect your eyes from the sun? That must be a Muggle invention.' Lallie thought before turning back to the lesson. She was glad all these extracurricular charms had simple hand movements. She was good enough with the incantations, and she was good with concentrating and focusing all her energy on the spell. Her hand movements though were always off on the first several tries.

'OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh' Lallie kept repeating the incantation in her head and out loud. She liked taking the spell slowly, not just immediately waving her wand trying to perform it. Taking her wand out after repeating the incantation several times she tapped the wand to the damaged glasses and said aloud, "Oculus Reparo!"

And...nothing happened. Hmm, strange, she had tapped the glasses and had said the incantation correctly. Then she remembered rule number three of charms, determination. Put your soul into the words. Again she tapped the glasses and this time thought about the magic and felt her push it from her soul into her wand as she cried, "Oculus Reparo!"

She looked to the professor to see if she did well.
Professor Edit: "Well done, Miss Luna." Zahid nodded to her as she looked up. "Now, break them anew to practice some more." Giving an encouraging smile he moved on to the next student that might need some help.

History had never seemed to be more interesting. Not to say learning about everything that happened decades ago wasn't interesting, it was just that she didn't have an affinity for listening. Never disrespectful though.

Today they were learning the (eye)glasses repairing charm. This would be prove itself to be useful, for Millie was getting glasses soon, and she was certain to break them. After all, what kind of clumsy child was she if she didn't break her expensive glasses at least four times in a week? Psh.

She waited (im)patiently for the rest of her year, and listening to Professor Zahid wasn't helping her anxiousness. When given the chance to practice the incantation or just start, Millie ripped out a piece of parchment and pen (instead of an annoying quill) and began writing down the incantation. 'OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh.'

"Oculus Reparo. Oculus Reparo. OC-u-lus Re-PAR-o. Incantation has to be perfect!" She continued to correct herself. If she messed this up, it'd be impossible for her to recover. Well, it wouldn't be deadly, unless the charm backfired on her and made her a mangled mess. Perhaps she was just imagining the worst, or the best possibility. You never knew with magic.

"Okay, let's try this," She pulled out her golden-rose wand and took in a deep breath. She tapped the broken pair of glasses with her wand. "Oculus Reparo."

She closed her eyes and hoped. Who knew if it worked?
Professor Edit: Zahid noted that the Gryffindor had trouble with the pronunciation as she practiced the incantation and made his way over to help correct it.

However, she managed on her own before he reached her and cast the spell on her broken sunglasses. Giving her a slight (satisfied) smile he praised, "Good work on correcting your own pronunciation and your spell casting, Miss Millie."

The extra classes in Hogwarts had proven themselves to be quite interesting so far. It was always better than sitting in the commonroom doing nothing in particular. Since River had no homework to do today, she decided to attend.
She walked inside, looking around at the other students who also decided some extra learning would be nice today. There were a few people there whom River recognized from around.

As the professor explained what they would be going over today, River took her notes as usual. It was a little specialty of hers, taking notes. She truly did enjoy it, and they always proved themselves useful later on. They were learning the Eye-Glass Repair Charm, a spell that could definitely prove itself useful for River, as she could be incredibly clumsy at times. Plus, there is nothing as annoying as having glasses you can’t even see through.

After River finished taking her notes, writing down all the necessary details, she got to practicing the pronounciation as instructed. Reading her notes out loud, she said «OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh», slowly and clearly she repeated the incantation over and over again. Gaining speed and confidence as she went on.

After some time of reading over her notes, and going over the incantation and pronounciation, she pulled out her wand and found herself a pair of sun-glasses.
Focusing hard on the spell, she carefully tapped the broken glasses, «Oculus Reparo», she said quite slowly.
Nothing happened... There was perhaps a slight movement in some of the broken pieces, but the glasses were still a mess.
Come on, just focus, say the incantation precisely, and imagine the effect happening.
She tapped the glasses once more and said clearly, «Oculus Reparo!».

Professor Edit: Zahid was gladdened to see that River was back up and healthy after her duel - not that he expected different, but it was still good to see that his students were just fine - and noted that her approach to spellcasting was similar to her approach to duelling as she didn't let herself be discouraged after a failure. "Nice work, Miss Dewlight."

Bridget was excited to be learning practical magic in History class. It was odd that this was the class teaching them extra spells, but she wasn’t complaining. Unlike many other students, Bridget actually liked History class. It definitely wasn’t her favorite class, and Muggle history could be extremely boring, but she had found History of Magic to be very useful. It was the class that had taught her the most about the Magical world, after all.

She took her seat and listened intently to the Professor as he explained today’s lesson. She was shocked to learn that wizards didn’t know what sunglasses were. She knew the wizarding culture vastly differed from the Muggle one she had been raised in, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t surprised by this revelation.

Finally, the Professor finished his lecture and allowed them to start. Bridget didn’t know what use she would have for the eyeglass repair charm, as she didn’t wear glasses, but she supposed it would be good to know. Besides, the more magic she knew, the better.

“OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh,” Bridget repeated several times, careful to pronounce it exactly how the Professor had. She never had any problems with the wand movement as she was very visual (and besides, the wand work for this spell was surprisingly simple) and her desire to learn as much magic as possible always made the determination part easy. It was the pronunciation she had frequently struggled with in performing charms.

Bridget took a deep breath, swept her dark brown hair behind her ears so it wouldn’t be in the way, and drew her wand. OCK-you-lists reh-PAH-roh,’ she repeated in her brain one more time. She had already learned the Mending Charm, and she figured this would be similar. Finally, she pictured a pair of mended sunglasses, as part of determination was seeing your desired result.

She tapped the mangled sunglasses with her wand and said “Oculus Reparo!” careful to pronounce it exactly how the Professor had.
Professor Edit: Making his way through the rows of students, Zahid came to a stop to congratulate yet another student for her success. "Excellent, Miss Collins." He was quite proud of his students most of them seemed to take to spell-learning as a fish to water. Some, like Bridget even managed on the first try.

History of Magic had become an interesting class to say the least. Although the blonde had never been one to dwell on the past, there were things to be learned from events in history. Salem witches, even the soap class hadn't been so bad despite all of them having had to clean. It seemed of late the class had more than simply dates and data thrown at students in hope some would stick. Did it really matter to remember the year the Troll Wars happened? But then again for a person without glasses was learning Oculus Reparo really useful? She figured there were sunglasses, such as the ones on the desks before them. She did use them every so often, though she'd never broken a pair.

As Professor Zahid spoke, and explained their task she took in the information. Oculus Reparo, a tap of the wand. It seemed simple enough. Once the class had been given the go ahead she set herself to the task, settling the pair of cheap aviators in front of her carefully before extracting her wand from her robes. It was odd to pull it out in such a theoretical class, but any chance at magic was welcome. With a light tap to the metallic nose bridge she spoke the incantation.

"OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh." Nothing happened and she sighed. Her pronunciation had been perfect, she knew it. Intent, she needed more intent, she needed to will the words to actually repair the glasses. What was that Efficiency Postulate again? Magic was essentially lazy, and only did what it needed to be even in exchange. Not having true motivation she racked her mind. As a beater, she could break glasses, perhaps this would be that even exchange. She could fix things she broke, it seemed the right thing to do. Right?

"Oculus Reparo." The words were firmer this time around, her wand touching the same spot again on the glasses with a demanding yet controlled tap. She would succeed, she had to. She had this, she was capable and this was a simple spell. One that might come in handy some day.
Professor Edit: Zahid observed as Angellica tried the spell a second time. He noted that her pronunciation had been correct the first time, but he knew that there was more to spellcasting than merely the incantation. She did sound a lot surer the second time and he watched as her glasses mended themselves. "Good work, Miss Rowley."

Thanks to a friend, the Gryffindor girl would never know that the new History of Magic Professor also teaches students additional spells in his class. It was really interesting that students could learn other new practical spells aside from the Charms class and the Defense against the Dark Arts class, there were two reasons why Griseldis wanted to be here. The first reason was that it was her strong desire to learn more spells as possible and the second reason was a bit personal, her last History of Magic Homework wasn't really good. She ended up getting an A due to one specific question about the Dark Mark's primary purpose and gave the wrong answer. So the proud Gryffindor girl wanted to make it up and not wanting to disappoint Professor Zahid again.

In today's class, the students were about to learn a Charm called "Oculus Reparo", it was one of the Mending Charm that mainly repairs broken glasses. Even though Griseldis had very good eyesight and didn't really need to wear glasses but she had friends who wear glasses, it could be quite useful if she learns this spell to help people save their money to buy another new pair of glasses. She carefully listened to Professor Zahid's detailed explanation about the Eyeglass Repair Charm, her pastel grey eyes focus on his hand movement when he did the demonstration casting the Charm on the glasses. Once Professor Zahid finished his lesson, he first advised them to vocalize the spell's incantation without their wand a few times as practice before casting it on the glasses. Griseldis stared at the crack on the sunglasses in front of her, the wand movement of this spell is very simple but the incantation was somehow a bit long. She took a deep breath and quietly whispered the incantation three times, "OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh...OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh...OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh...", Ok! I think I can do this. She thought to herself and nodded satisfyingly.

Griseldis picked up the wand that was lying on the desk beside her, remembering the three important rules of performing a Charm. Focus...the correct pronunciation of the incantation...and the right wand movement... she gently tapped on the broken sunglasses with her wand and said, "Oculus Reparo!" Then she heard a soft zap noise came out from the tip of the wand.
Professor Edit: Going through the rows, Zahid heard strange noise coming from one of the Gryffindors. As he looked over, he caught the glasses repairing themself. So, she had been successful… but he couldn't help but wonder what that sound was, the spell normally didn't really make a noticable sound. "Nicely done, Miss Edelhardt. Go ahead and break them so you can try again."

Meenauh entered the room not among the first and quite a lot of students were already in there. She noticed the sun-glasses scattered across the tables of the classroom. She hastily reached to the first empty desk, pulled out her wand and placed it on the table near the pair of broken glasses. She knew pretty well which spell they would be learning. Mother taught her a bunch of useful spells back then even before school. And now she finally had an opportunity to legally properly practise them.

She looked into her memory palace and tried to remember the incantation before Professor Zahid would pronounce it, but she managed to do it just at the same second Professor proclaimed it out loud: OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh, first word — first syllable, second word — second syllable. She remembered there was no specific hand movement for the spell and in the next couple of seconds, Professor confirmed that.

She repeated the incantation nice and clear several times — even with simple spells she never rushed and tried the incantation alone several times. Then she picked up her wand, cleared her throat, touched the glasses with the tip of the wand and proclaimed:

"Oculus Reparo!" and with a quick sharp whistling sound the glasses were whole again. The next second she smashed the glasses with her fist, cleared the throat and repeated the spell. The glasses were whole again, but only after that Meenauh noticed that her fist hurt a bit as probably the glasses scraped the skin. She pulled out a book from her pouch and smashed the glasses with it once again, then put the book back into her pouch.

"Oculus Reparo!" she said again. That time she didn't tap on the glasses but tried just pointing at them, and nothing happened, though the incantation was clear and intention not less clear, "Interesting," she smiled to herself, hoping no one noticed her small experiment. She tapped on the glasses with another incantation and they were resting on the table as if they were never broken.
Professor Edit: His attention was caught by an even louder noise - it seemed his students were talented in the sound making department. Looking around he observed Meenauh as she broke her glasses to try a second time, which failed utterly to his surprise - after all, the need to re-break them implied that she had already succeeded.

He made his way over but before he reached her, she had already tried and this time succeeded again. "Good work, Miss Silmataurea!"

Charlotte hurried through the corridor, impatient to attend this new, quite peculiar lesson. She had heard they were about to learn how to repair glasses, with a simple swish of the wand. Even though she did not own any, it could prove itself helpful at any given time. She pushed the door and sighed, relieved to be just on time. She sat a desk in the front, not wanting to miss anything because of a taller student sitting in front of her.

She looked at the professor as he explained to the eager group of students how to properly pronounce it. Suddenly, the glasses that seemed shattered into pieces put themselves back together, looking as good as new. This only increased Charlotte impatience to do it herself.

Looking at her desk, she only realised now that an old pair of golden glasses were waiting in the corner, the left side twisted and the glass cracked. She took a deep breath, pulled out her wand and held it tight. Before swishing it into the air, she repeated the spell a couple of times.

'OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh'

Okay, that seemed pretty simple to pronounce. Good. She repeated numerous times in her mind, making sure it was perfect.
She cleared her throat, her wand slightly above the broken glasses and took a deep breath. This time she would try it on the glasses. What if she mispronounced it? What if it just simply did not work? Squinting, she tapped the glasses gently.

'OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh'
She watched, amazed, as the glasses repaired themselves right before her eyes. Her eyes wide opened, she couldn't help but be proud of herself, even after accomplishing such a simple looking task. Maybe I should try again?

She looked over and saw a girl putting her glasses between the pages of her book to crush them, so she did the same thing. Taking another deep breath, she looked at the glasses, her wand at the ready.

'OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh'
And once again with a simple tap of the wand, the glasses mended themselves, under the amazed eye of Charlotte.
Professor Edit: Just as Zahid was about to congratulate Charlotte on her success, he couldn't help a slight wince when he saw that she used her history book to re-break the glasses. That poor book.

He observed as she repaired the glasses another time before he continued down the rows. "Well done, Miss Cardunt."

When Amber entered the classroom, it was already half full with excitedly chattering students. She scanned the crowd, but she did not recognise any familiar face so she decided to sit down at a table which was still empty.
As she unpacked her notebook, quill, ink and wand, her gaze fell onto a pair of sunglasses which already lay on her desk.
Head tilted slightly to the side, she wondered which spell they would be learning today. However, she could not think about it for too long because the second she had sat down, the History of Magic professor entered the room and started the lesson.

As he explained to the students what sunglasses were, Amber was startled. “Huh?” Until now she had believed that this was common knowledge. Didn’t wizards and witches need to protect their eyes from the sun, as well? It took her a few moments until it dawned on her that there probably was a spell for that, too. How silly of her.

While listening to the professor and taking notes, she soundlessly mouthed the incantation over and over again to herself. “OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh.  OCK-you-liss reh-PAH-roh. Oculus Reparo.
As a perfectionist, she really wanted to do it right.

Sooner than she had expected, it was time to practise the spell. Oculus Reparo. Oculus Reparo. The phrase kept whirring around in her head.

Slowly, she reached for her wand and pushed the sunglasses on her desk closer to her. Then, she cleared her voice and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Oculus Reparo. You got this.

She gave the sunglasses a light tap with her wand and one could easily hear the uncertainty in her voice as she said: Oculus Reparo.
Despite having pronounced the incantation right, nothing had happened. The dark glasses still looked pathetic with their many cracks and dents.
Amber thought about it for a few moments and came to the conclusion that the spell had failed because she had not been determined and confident enough in her doings.
The young muggleborn girl had not been here for a long time yet so the magical world was still new to her. It seemed to take her a bit longer than the other muggleborn students to get used to holding and using a wand without any embarrassment.
If someone from her Muggle-friends would be able to see her right now, they would most definitely laugh at her. “There’s no such thing as magic, grow up. Only babies play with toy wands”, they would probably say, but Amber knew better.

She shook her head slightly in order to clear her thoughts and focus on the lesson. Oculus Reparo. After taking a deep breath, she felt ready to try it again.

Amber shifted in her seat and straightened her back as she tightened the grip around her wand. Once again, she gave the sunglasses a firm tap with the tip of her wand and assertively spoke: Oculus Reparo.

A positively surprised smile lay on her lips as she witnessed how the glasses repaired themselves and a silent “wow” escaped her mouth. Magic never ceased to amaze her.
Professor Edit: As a muggle-raised wizard himself, he was still always amazed to see the same awe on other (student's) faces when they were still unused to magic and saw it at work. Zahid couldn't help but give the Ravenclaw a bright smile, "Well done, Miss Wood. Magic never ceases to amaze, does it?"
