Trophy Room - Armour Gallery.
12 PM
Sometimes during meal times, when Mari was particularly overwhelmed by the presence of people's friendships, she escaped. The locations she escaped to never remained the same, for she wasn't some loser who only ate her lunch in the toilets, ambiance provided by the wails of Moaning Myrtle. Instead, she made it her mission to try to seek out new portions of the castle. If she was going to be a loner, she may as well be a loner who knew the castle better than the average student.
Today, the Trophy Room was her destination. She had popped down to the Great Hall, nicked a sandwich, wrapped it in a napkin, and made her way to the third floor. When she arrived at the Armoury, her specific destination for today, she positioned herself directly in front of the middle knight, unwrapped her sandwich, and gazed upon its glory. A knight looked so regal, especially with knighted companions. They were especially shiny today.
For a brief moment, Mari pondered the armored Headmaster Lear - he looked quite anachronous when he was roaming the castle, but if he lingered here, he would fit right in. Lear was a funny man; she did not quite know what to make of him. One certainly couldn't say there were a lot of people who walked around in armor, that's for certain. Mari stifled a giggle.
When she had entered the Trophy Room, Mari had noted the sign that hung beside the door: Trophy Room. No smudging. Normally, being Mari, she would have followed that rule to T: stand five feet back, don't eat a sandwich, and absolutely no touching. But as she looked around after taking in the beautiful knight, she realized no one was there. No one would know if she made a teensy little smudge on the knight. All she wanted to do was touch one so she could appreciate it more.
She had been eating the sandwich with two hands while she had these thoughts, so Mari shifted the sandwich to her left hand and reached out with her right, crunching lettuced turkey all the while. While any average person would realize that food debris would inevitably leave smudging, Mari honestly did not realize that her greasy sandwich hands would leave a mark. She was far too focused on the cold, smooth metal on her skin.
Though Headmaster Lear was strange, she sometimes wondered what it would be like to be a knight. Maybe not in this time period, of course; she wasn't nearly as dramatic as Lear. But as she felt the metal and its solidness, she realized that armour might be the way to be that strong person she always wished she was. For a brief moment, she thought to raise her hands (even with the sandwich) to quickly swipe the helmet off the masked creature. Reality struck; she was Mari, not someone who would ever have her soul be armoured, not someone who would perform such a risky move, not someone who would dare the possibility of getting in trouble.
So she got lost in her dreams. Every once in a while, reality would strike just long enough for Mari to take another bite of her turkey sandwich, but if anyone came up to her, she would certainly jump in alarm. Mari just wanted to feel strong for once. If she was strong, like this suited knight, she would perhaps be engaging with friends in the Great Hall instead of eating a sandwich with non-living objects. She wondered what it would take to be strong like this knight as she felt the intricacies of the object before her.

Millie tapped the hard cover of her most recent book. Her violet eyes flickered through the halls as she descended through them. The book tightly clutched beneath her fingers was titled 'Quidditch Through The Ages'. It got her thinking. How many of these famous Quidditch players came from Hogwarts? What about other schools? Millie knew there were plenty of them.
Taking a trip to the Trophy room definitely took some time. Millie forgot what was her left and right and ended up taking two wrong turns, and only realized she was on the wrong path when she was on the second floor corridors. Then she had to find her way back to the Trophy room, and Peeves didn't help. The poltergeist chased her and tried to throw water balloons on the Gryffindor.
Luckily, the Bloody Baron saved Millie from anymore trouble, and told her the correct way to get to the room. It took an extra twenty minutes from when Millie started to leave the Gryffindor Common room to finally reach the Trophy room.
So Millie thought she 'oughta send a little prank towards Peeves way. But after she spent twenty minutes trying to get to the Trophy room. Curiosity lead her heart and her mind followed suit. But when finally reached the room, Millie was struck confused when she found another girl, sitting and looking. The girl had a dazed look, and a sandwich in her hand? Millie only got more confused as she stepped closer, and examined the girl.
The girl was very pretty, that was for sure. She had curly brown hair and matching brown eyes, and it made Millie slightly self-conscious. Her purple eyes flickered to her black hair, and they didn't look nearly as pretty. But the girl had on mustard-yellow robes, and Millie knew that she was a Hufflepuff.
Millie stepped closer to the girl. "Excuse me? Are you alright here? You look kind of lonely," Millie bit her lip, was what she had said invasive? Like an invasion of privacy? "I don't mean to seem invasive-" She suddenly covered her mouth.
"I mean-" Millie exhaled, she ruined her chance at seeming somewhat normal. "I'm Euphrasia, but call me Millie."

The turkey sandwich was the best kind of food, in Mari's opinion. The bread, if toasted, provided the best kind of texture and crunch to compliment the salty goodness of bird. Sourdough bread was her favorite, as it created a taste hard to replicate in any other food. Though this sandwich was plain other than meat and bread, Mari was quite pleased that she had been able to acquire sourdough that day. She wished that she had chosen to include a bit more mayonnaise, as her mouth was still a bit too dry for her liking, and perhaps some tomato and lettuce for more wet-crunch, but the sandwich she had was satisfactory enough. What was life without future improvements, anyway?
She took a bite of her sandwich when a voice jolted her to attention. It belonged to a polite girl, willing to say "excuse me" though Mari knew of very few young people who would start a sentence like that. If she was crazy, she would perhaps wonder if the girl was actually an adult in disguise. It was implausible, however. This was Hogwarts, after all. Very few people were crazy.
Mari smiled at the girl's courtesy. "It's fine. It's a pleasure to meet you, Millie. I'm Mari. I was just a little overwhelmed by all the hubbub in the Great Hall, is all, which is why I'm here." She extended the hand which held her turkey sandwich, giggled, switched the sandwich to her less dominant hand, and held out the still-greased hand for a handshake. Whether the girl would take it or not, Mari would flash another smile, this time showing teeth, and turn to the armor before her, touching it with er grease some more. No smudging clearly did not have much meaning for the Hufflepuff. As she touched the armor, she asked the girl, "Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be a knight? I always find it interesting that Lear wears it; do you think he feels stronger with it on? Maybe I should do that. I'm...not as brave."
She turned back towards the girl and smiled. Mari was incredibly self-conscious, but curious. Oftentimes, people found her curiosity strange and off-putting, but given this girl's polite way of speaking, she figured voicing her thoughts would perhaps be okay. As she looked at the girl with the soft smile, she hoped that her thoughts would be right.

When the girl began talking, Millie took notice of her voice and actions. So the girl was in the Great Hall, but its chaos seemed to overwhelm her. This wasn't too shocking, since the Great Hall was always loud, with students bustling, studying, or just trying to eat. People always occupied it during mealtimes, and if you stayed over Christmas, it was sometimes quiet. That wasn't very often, since a lot of people did tend to stay at Hogwarts.
The castle was so interesting, Millie used the majority of her free time just exploring it. Whether it be by herself, or with a group of friends, she always seemed to find time to find a brand new room. It was still difficult, because the castle was loaded with tricks and bribery, and things had their own schedule of appearing and whatnot, it was always confusing.
Mari reached her hand out for a shake, and Millie swiftly complied, giving it an enthusiastic shake, before watching as the girl turned towards the suit of armor. She touched it, and it smudged, but Millie didn't really take any notice.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be a knight? I always find it interesting that Lear wears it; do you think he feels stronger with it on? Maybe I should do that. I'm...not as brave."
The headmaster wore armor. How could Millie forget? While she only saw the headmaster at mealtimes, it was easy to realize that he always had a suit of armor.
"I'm sure he wears it to seem strong, but maybe not brave. Even the strongest knights can be cowards," Millie offered a smile. "I'm sure you can be brave."

I responded to this and it never went through!! I'm so sorry.
Millie told her that she could be brave, and though Mari wanted to believe it, she could not imagine a world where "Mari" and "brave" would be used in the same sentence unless it also involved the word "not." This Gryffindor, in a house that was known for being brave, was a liar. She could be brave, but Mari was not brave, and Mari didn't know if she was trying to show her bravery by flat out lying to her.
When Mari was back in Holt, she and Lucy had been inseparable. For a while it had just been their mum, Isa, and Mari, so the girls had depended on each other. They even shared a bed, desperate to not be abandoned by anyone else in their family. Even when Ewan had returned, Mari could remember begging her mum to let Lucy skip a grade or holding Mari back, but Isa, ever the academic, would always reply that they were in their grades for a reason and it would do them some good to learn what they were supposed to. Mari, upset at this reality, shut herself down in classes and would hover around her younger sister during their resources. Lucy became the dominant personality, and Mari's independence - and thus bravery - faded into oblivion.
She missed her family greatly. If she hadn't gone to Hogwarts, life would be the same as it was before; she wouldn't need to worry about being good enough by herself, because she'd have Lucy. Now, though, bravery seemed essential, though she had to say she'd feel a bit more comfortable if she was armored like that knight. With a doubtful smile, she looked at the girl who exuded confidence and wondered simply, "Do you really think so? Do you think you could show me how?"

Millie tried to bring out her confidence to the girl, who simply lacked it. But, not having millions of confidence wasn't that bad. After all, nobody wanted to end up like the Flying Professor.
Maybe her confidence came from America. The land of the free, where so many people were confident, happy, and extremely arrogant. Was that why she was put in Gryffindor? Everything she had learned in America, she had adapted to. She had changed from a naïve little girl, to a brave, and happy woman. Or, an older little girl. Maybe growing up was scary, but it also must've been amazing.
She dragged one of her hands through her messy brown-black hair. She was looking at the armor once more. Millie thought about being a knight. Oh how it would feel to be a brave fighter. Sort of like Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon. That was a good anime. Being a normal muggle was nice, but so was being a witch. Nothing was every as it seemed.
"Do you really think so? Do you think you could show me how?"
How would someone show another how to be brave? For, bravery came from deep within. Perhaps that was why this girl didn't seem to be brave. Time would come when she needed to be. It was like a question of life. How to act on emotions you don't know you have? Could it be the adrenaline rush you would need? Or just trying to stick up for what was right. It was all confusing, none-the-less.
"I absolutely believe so. Anybody can be brave when their time comes. As for teaching you how to be brave, I think you just need to believe in yourself. I'm no Philosopher, though."

Believe in herself? How could she?
One of the negatives of having two primary friends, especially when those friends were your sisters, was that you weren't exposed to a bunch of different personalities. Mari did claim that Lucy's friends were her own, but seeing as none of them had even attempted to contact her or send messages through Lucy when she had left for Hogwarts (or, boarding school, as they were told) the message was clear: they were not truly friends. That had been a knock to her ego itself, let alone the other things that her family had said to "try" to be helpful.
Lucy used to write all the time, asking her about Hogwarts, eagerly awaiting the time the following year when she herself would be a student. When the fire of questions had been exhausted, however, the topic shifted to the preteen's favorite topic: boys. She always wondered why Mari didn't have a boyfriend, why she didn't really have friends at all, and Mari would always respond that she didn't know, but she was trying. Come March, trying and explaining just felt exhausting.
As for Isa, she was not pleased with Mari's lackluster grades. Isa had been a Ravenclaw, herself - though her family had mainly been Slytherins - so she was ambitious about grades and always pushed herself for those O's. Mari, on the other hand, only cared about O's in Herbology; the rest didn't really matter to her. As long as she could do the spell, an Acceptable was alright in her book. Isa felt otherwise, always asking Mari about her study routine and wondering if she was talking to the professors after class on how to improve. She didn't seem to understand that Mari was terrified of them.
Ewan and Grace were a bit more understanding about things, but they both didn't really understand the world she lived in: Ewan because he was a Muggle, Grace because she was six. Mari most of her confidences in them, these days, but she still couldn't tell them everything. Ewan had been trying, but he would never know fully what it was like to be magical. Grace wouldn't be able to truly understand until she was at Hogwarts, herself. Besides, she had just about as many friends as Lucy.
So she felt alone, unable to believe in herself, unable to trust in the words of this girl. She had no friends to reassure her, her family either was focused on things she didn't care about or didn't understand, and there were only so many times you could trust a diary to lift your spirits.
But still. This girl was nice enough to talk to her, give her a respite from the craziness that was the Great Hall, so she wouldn't just knock her statements even though she wanted to. She bit her lip and thought of ways to continue, before settling on saying, "What do you do to be brave, then? When have you felt the bravest?"

Millie closed her eyes and let her imagination take charge. She always felt brave when she was trapped in her own mind, exploring all the goods and the bads, explaining her own negativity and positivity, exploring everything she could ever imagine. That was her bravery. Knowledge."What do you do to be brave, then? When have you felt the bravest?"
But she also felt brave when she was with her friends. She had never felt better when in the company of others. Though, solitude was also a gift. She loved being alone, and with other people. She loved herself. Was that the key to bravery? Self-love and help? Living your truth? No-
You could not just live your truth and be happy. You had to do it with pride. Find it inside of yourself with all the happiness and love you could muster, even if it was against everything else in your life. You have to find it in yourself and accept it and love it with pride, especially when nobody else can. That's bravery.
Somehow, Millie didn't know how to do that, but she was learning. That was bravery too. Living and learning, forgiving and forgetting. Bravery came in all shapes and sizes, she just had to learn her own.
"I don't do anything to be brave. I fight off everything telling me otherwise, and when nobody else can, I tell myself it'll be alright. Because in the end, everything will be alright. Scared, or in the midst of braveness. It'll be okay, no pain lasts forever."

She looked at the girl as she spoke and though her words should have logically made sense, it was all lost to her. What in the world was she talking about? She could think of plenty things, especially in the Muggle world, that made pain last forever, like paralysis or a particularly powerful snake bite. And for her to say that she could just go about things without courage or fear...
This wasn't really advice, nothing she could move forward with. She would have had better luck with the "believe in yourself" tip, for though she really did not believe in herself, there are easy directions to go with that. But, as fate would have it, she had not asked these questions, and instead was lost. Mari wondered what she could do next, if there was a way for her to get tips and tricks to make her life better overall. Unfortunately, her mind raced as she ate the last bit of sandwich, and she was unable to come up with anything. For a brief moment, she thought about asking the real-life armored man for advice on courage, but she knew that in life's greatest irony, she did not have have the courage to ask him for anything.
Mari sighed. She may not get courage today, but she could at least do some homework to gain knowledge. With a small, meek smile, she turned toward the girl and said, "Thank you for your nice words. I do have to run though...I should probably finish my Charms homework before class. I hope to see you around, Millie."
Her final action would be to feel the hard, silvered figure once more, greasing it further. Maybe one day she would understand - that day just wouldn't be today. After a couple seconds, Mari then left the room and retreated to the library.

It didn't make sense. That part was true. Nothing that came out of Millie's mouth made sense- usually. There were times when she said wise words, but even then, she didn't understand them. Yes, she spoke quickly, and yes she did say some pretty dumb things, but she could be smart! If she really tried, anything was possible. Except maybe teaching this other girl how to be brave. That might've been impossible.
There was absolutely nothing that made Millie brave. She just... was. She had always been that way. Maybe not like a fearless person, or something, but she definitely was brave. But bravery came from her stupidity, as well. She was stupidly loyal and selfless, which lead her to be brave in scary situations. But the word brave was nothing than a mere word to her, whereas Mari seemed to treasure the word like a possession. Something you could be, rather than what you were.
She had been so lost in thought, she almost didn't realize Mari had said her goodbyes. Quickly, Millie raised a hand, and waved off to Mari. She offered a smile, something she had trouble doing, when deep in thought. Perhaps working on homework wouldn't be so hard.
After all, Mari had been brave enough to do it.
