Your aunt and uncle will be collecting you to bring you home this summer. You are to come home with them immediately – no staying for the summer camp. There will be no arguing over this.

Ruby stared at the letter that had been delivered to her, not a hint of emotion showing in her blue eyes, or anything else that could hint at her reaction to the concise note. Ever since she had replied to her parents' incessant owls, telling them her house, she hadn't had any contact with them. No letters, no word from them over the breaks, no anything. Her aunt and uncle had taken her to their house for both breaks, but they had avoided mentioning her parents and wouldn't answer her questions. Why did they want her home now? Why, after going most of the year without any contact, did her father suddenly send this? What if she didn't want to see them? Was that place even home anymore? She crumpled the letter into a tight ball and stuffed it into her pocket. She would attempt to forget about it until she got home.
