Cass still wasn't quite sure how they had managed to convince a random very cool fifth year to duel them. But they were very happy about it! Despite the absolutely terrible odds for them (a gap of three years difference was massive in dueling), they were totally going to win! Or at least put on a good showing. Honestly, they would settle for hitting her once. Hitting her would be great. Then Aston could give lovely commentary on their excellent spellcasting!

Speaking of sky-boy, it was very nice of him to take a break from stalking Prat to show up and referee a duel. It was good to see he had other hobbies than hiding in trees and claiming to be "drawing". Which was a total lie, and they could prove it! Well. Actually they couldn't. But still! They could find it out. It would make for a lovely afternoon of investigating sometime. Probably one of their few ideas that wouldn't end with everyone involved in detention, but they were sure they could spin it into a bit of trouble-making somehow.

They hadn't done too badly in their past sporting endeavours- despite not being on a team yet, the unofficial broom race they had done over summer hadn't gone to badly. Keeping up with students a whole lot older than them and with a whole lot more experience was something they were quite proud of.

Ever since she relinquished her prefect title, Aurora felt an uncontrollable itch in her fingers, a longing for mischief that was impossible to ignore. She had grown to be so proper, which was something so foreign even to herself. Now that she no longer had to suck up and be a good role model, it was time to do whatever she wanted. When someone finally challenged her to a duel, she could hardly contain her excitement.

Cass, was it? She had seen this person before, perhaps in passing through the hallways, maybe even once in the headliner office, but they had never spoken.

"Hello, hello!" Aurora greeted, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. "It's been far too long! I might be a little rusty, so go easy on me, will you?" Oh, no... not really. It hadn’t been that long. Her last competition wasn’t a duel, per se, it had been broom racing, which, according to her, was harder than just duelling. It was duelling plus flying. Twice the thrill, twice the skill. Twice the damage.

She adjusted her stance, not that it was much of a stance, really. There weren’t stances in broom racing. She just wanted to look… menacing. Yeah.. menacing. As menacing as one could look with her sparkly unicorn headband.

Aston had low expectations for Cass, despite their duelling co-captain position and Aurora's humble talk of her skill Aston still didn't think Cass will be able to hold their own against a fifth year. And it seems he was correct with how this first round of spells were cast.

Cass decided to cast Obscuro, the blindfolding spell. Aston thought it seemed like a pretty good choice, stopping Aurora from casting spells accurately would be very helpful and give Cass a chance to cast something that does more damage. But their plan didn't work out, the spell was cast just fine but with lacklustre accuracy, against Aurora's trained reflexes it was easily dodged. Leaving Aurora unaffected.

Aurora had a lot more success in her casting, her metelojinx worked perfectly, probably the best one Aston has seen. Sure he hasn't seen that spell used a lot, but still, it was a very good metelojinx. "A beautiful metelojinx from Aurora!"He watched as the storm cloud manifested above Cass ominously. Aston watched as it struck down a lightning bolt aiming right at Cass and hitting them. They seem decent for someone that just got struck by lightning, certainly good enough to keep casting spells. Aston hoped they will have more of a chance of success the next time they cast something.

Cass had a totally awesome strategy for their first spell, if they did say so themself. Obscuro would have stopped her from getting out of the way, and also stopped her from hitting them back till she could rid of the blindfold. Sadly, it seemed that fate had other ideas. Though their casting was lovely, it was miles away from its target and the girl dodged it with ease. Not fair at all! Surely their aim should be backing them up here, rather than lending its support to an older year with far better odds of doing well in this duel. They just wanted one hit. One hit and they could say they successfully hit a fifth year! They weren't stupid (despite how desperately they acted like it) and they knew they were going to have to pull off some miracles to win this duel.

All they really wanted to do was have fun and put up a good fight. Seeing Aurora ready her wand, they got ready to dodge whatever super cool older year spell she hurled at them. Surprisingly though, she aimed not at them but at the area above their head. The ceiling of the room was filled with angry grey stormclouds, and Cass recognised them instantly. This was the very same spell that had been used in one of the duels they had refereed earlier! It seemed super powerful I swear this spell always crits haha. Or maybe both of the casters were just super good at spells.

As a broom racer, dodging trees, buildings, and anything else that came at her at full speed was basically her daily workout. So naturally, dodging a few spells was quite an easy task. Especially since Cass was a couple of years below her.

"WOAHH!" She blinked, jaw dropping as the spell was casted. Was that... her doing? Sure, it wasn’t the first time she'd nailed a spell, but this? This was next-level! Every time she pulled off magic, it still blew her mind. But, it was also her first time casting metelojinx outside the safety of the classroom and of course, Aurora being Aurora, she hadn’t exactly anticipated the full effects. The part where someone got electrocuted, that minor detail kind of slipped off her mind.

“My bad!” she cringed. That looked like it hurt badly. She silently hoped there wouldn’t be any serious side effects, like headache, disorientation, or them permanently having their hair going upwards. But then Aston spoke up complimenting her. “OH, THANK YOU!” She beamed as her guilt evaporated like her knowledge right after stepping out of the classroom. She was seconds away from doing a twirl, but then realising that they were in the middle of a duel. Though unofficial, a duel is a duel.

Once again, Cass's spell missed the target. A pity really, that rictusempra they cast looked like a powerful one, but their accuracy was no match for Aurora's experienced evasion. She is a broom racer for Ravenclaw, even if she isn't a duellist Broom racing can certainly better your duelling. It's quite an impressive sport. The rictusempra from Cass only narrowly missed, if Aurora's movement was just a little bit off it probably would've hit her. Cass probably won't even be able to get one hit in with the way this is going.

Aurora casts a spell of her own, a second year spell, incendio duo. Aston was slightly surprised she didn't cast something more advanced, but he quickly figured out why. With the age difference there's probably no need to cast anything more advanced, Aston would certainly feel bad if he went all out in a duel with someone so much younger. Her spell had more success, it didn't seem as great as her last spell or Cass's rictusempra, but still good. And this one hit Cass straight on and hit them aflame. But at least that thunder cloud above them didn't strike down again, hopefully they have better luck next time they cast something.

Aurora seemed suprised that her own spell had hit. Where was her confidence? She was an awesome duelist, even Cass could see it. Cass could feel it to, actually. Everywhere hurt. But that was just part of the fun! "It's fine!" they called back. Then they almost dropped their wand while trying to give her a double thumbs up above their head so that she knew they were just fine. Fumbling to catch it, they admitted to themself that it hadn't been a very good idea. Securing their grip on their wand, they prepared to fire off another spell. They couldn't give up just yet! Just one hit. Just one hit would be enough for them.

Rictusempra would hopefully swing the odds into their favour. They gave it their absolute everything. The cast was perfect. Their teachers would be proud of them. The aim was brilliant as well. This was looking like a win for Cass, but then Aurora dodged right out of the way. No! It had been so close! And such a good cast as well. Still grieving from their perfect spell going astray, they attempted to dodge out of the way of an incendio duo heading their way. Attempted was the right word. Even though they practically ran out of the way, the spell still hit them dead on. Now they were on fire, and it hurt. It didn't hurt as missing their spell though. It had been so close to perfect!
