Off to a Bad Start...
"one track mind, one track heart. if i fail, i'll fall apart!" oh no!, marina
Marco was having a bit of a moment.
He perhaps may have been too confident about his success at Hogwarts. Some would call him dramatic, this sort of reaction to an E, which was not a bad grade, was a bit ridiculous. But as soon as he had seen the grade, it felt like Marco's brain had completely shut off. All noise around him became muffled, and anything that touched him was ignored. It was like interacting with a stone wall. Even as the class cleared out, he remained. The only time he spoke up was to just say he needed to sit for a bit, to dismiss any concern.
This was not good. Marco had not expected himself to do terribly as soon as he set foot into the school. He was in borderline insistence of his own success. He needed to be able to prove to everyone that he could handle the academics here. It wasn't even difficult! Marco had made silly mistakes, likely because he had not checked his work. His ego in terms of his academic performance was his downfall, his tutor had mentioned that once. He had not checked his work, and that had been his mistake.
Finally moving from his stiff posture, he could feel the ache in his back and shoulders. He rested his head in his hands, his knee bouncing uncontrollably under the table. Would his parents know of his grades? Hogwarts didn't send them back home, did they? There was no shot his parents hadn't requested them do so if not. They were going to take him out of Hogwarts. He was going to be a failure. He ran his hands through his hair, eyes trained on the desk under him as his vision began to blur.
His academic life was over as he knew it.

Off to a Bad Start...
Iris woke before dawn, her body on autopilot as it always was. The familiar tug of tiredness that pulled at her eyelids had and would be ignored.
She couldn’t afford to indulge it.
The day unfolded per routine, as if it's monotony had been etched permanently into her brain. Breakfast in the Great Hall was a blur of movement, her eyes mulling over textbooks between bites of toast. The conversations around her were a bore, something else that remained constant. She wasn’t part of them, not often anyway. Ever since her return, Iris had drawn tighter into herself; a product of the unspoken tension that she refused to unravel. If they noticed, no one said anything. And if they didn’t.. well, perhaps that was easier.
Moving through the castle was a swift ordeal, her mind already fixed on the task at hand. Charms. It was the only place she knew she could find Professor Fresnsel this time of day, though not exactly for a lesson. She needed clarification on a spell. A simple one, really, but she couldn’t stand the thought of being wrong. Or worse, falling behind.
Upon arrival she paused briefly, hand hovering just above the handle. How was she to phrase the question? It had to be perfect, god forbid she stumbled through it. Yet as she finally gathered the courage to push the door open, the empty room before her wasn’t exactly what she had envisioned.
Her gentle faced instructor was not there.
Instead, someone else sat alone, slumped over a desk near the back. A student, though it took Iris a second to recognize the fact. The figure was small, a mess of black hair bowed in their hands as if to scream "leave me alone". It wasn’t the casual loneliness that some students preferred in the quiet moments before class. This was different.
The student, clearly upset, really had nothing to do with her. Far from her concern, and yet, the instinct to turn and leave faltered. She had already made herself known, leaving the act of walking out unthinkably rude.
For a moment, Iris was at a loss. Empathy hadn't exactly been a word she was prided in, leaving her unsure in offering it. Truth be told, she didn’t want to get involved indulging in anyone else’s emotional burdens. Why, she barely tolerated her own. But she couldn’t ignore the situation either. So against better judgment, she drew a small breath, her presence clearly too obvious to slip away unnoticed.
"Are you alright?"

Kiana was on her way to Charms, Jade coiled comfortably around her neck. She had some free time on her hands and decided she might as well swing by and grab the textbook she left in the classroom. She couldn't do her homework without it. As she passed the classroom, she noticed the figure of a young boy who seemed in great distress. He looked as if he'd seen a ghost - face ashen and tears at the corners of his eyes. What could possibly have happened? In her three years of being at hogwarts, everyone had always looked so happy and content. She fiddled around in her pocket - maybe she had a snack? Something soothing? She approached the boy quietly and told Jade to slink back in a less intimidating pose, hoping not to scare the boy. She approached him silently, sitting down next to him without another word. It was her way of greeting - say nothing, silently nod and acknowledge their existence. Only when she found it appropriate to speak would she do so.
To most, Kiana may have come across as intimidating. Strikingly beautiful yet imposing, her blue eyes giving off an icy cold aura. But she was working on it. Someday, she'd appear friendlier.

To Marco's horror, he was not alone. Though at some level, he knew that there was no way that someone wouldn't have walked in on him. He was having a very silent panic attack in a room that was regularly filled with people. He had just somehow caught it when it wasn't busy. Now, of course, there had to be people. Snapping out of his self-pity daze, he rose his head to see two older years walk into the room. He guessed that they were, as he hadn't seen them around in his first year activities. Which, somehow, made this entire situation much more embarrassing. If his face wasn't already red from being upset, this would've pushed him over the edge. He rubbed his eyes and sat up a bit when the both of them sounded off their concerns.
Marco wasn't a particularly emotional kid. He was a bit stoic, and even on the inside he didn't feel emotions very intensely. There were some emotions, however, that he felt a lot. There were things that triggered that sort of reaction from him. Perceived failure was definitely up there as one of his biggest triggers to date. He was only eleven, he hadn't discovered all the sorts of things that would make him upset, happy, etc. But he had been through a lot at his age, maybe more than any child should go through. His werewolf curse, in particular, was not something he would wish upon anyone. But this was unrelated to his current qualms.
His parents held him to a high standard, therefore he held himself to a high standard. When they weren't around, the only person he had to impress was himself. When he didn't... Well, what would he do? Particularly when he knew this news would reach his parents. He had promised perfect Os, and that's not what he would be delivering. He would be delivering lazy work, and reinforcing the worry his parents had for letting him go to Hogwarts at all.
So, at their questions, Marco rubbed his eyes to push away any tears that might've been coming. "I'm okay. Sorry. Is your class starting? I should leave-" He went to get up, and ended up dropping his bag on the ground. "God-" Marco balled his fists, and then took a deep breath. He crouched down and began to clean up. "Excuse me. I just need to clean up, and then I'll be on my way."

Avis snickered as she walked into the room. The boy clearly was trying his very hardest to be the best, and this failure had hit him hard. So what. Avis didn't care. It was completely this kids fault that he got a E. But it did hurt him, Avis knew, this was the feeling of failure. It was simply a consequence of absurdly high standards. She knew what that was like. Her sister had beaten her at scrabble last year and Avis still regretted that word she had played.
Avis did not care in the slightest about this kids poor woes. And yet, Avis knew that everyone else was probably going to sugarcoat, tell him it was okay to get a E, that it was good. But that wasn't true, so it wouldn't be useful for him to here. E's weren't good, they were average, at least not to him. But they weren't the end of the world either. This boy needed a little bit of sense knocked into him.
"Boo hoo, you got a E. You know what you did? You were an idiot, you did stupid things. Its not the end of the world. If you had gotten a E because you were incapable of getting an O, that would suck. But if you got an E because of stupid mistakes, then there's a solution to that. Check your work numbskull. You have a problem. Fix it. Next time get an O. Life advice, 101."
Avis turned to leave the room. She didn't need to here his sob story. And yet... I"If you need anything, I'm here."

Yeah, this kid definitely had a day.
Iris watched silently as he fumbled with his bag, the frustration rolling off in waves, each motion more aggravated than the last. It wasn’t hard to connect the dots. Whatever had him on edge had clearly dug deep, the tension radiating off of him like a furnace.
Of course, that didn’t mean she was good at dealing with it.
She exhaled softly, eyes narrowing as Marco knelt to gather his things. “Take a moment.” Her tone was leveled, careful not to let any trace of pity slip in. “You’ll just drop everything again if you keep rushing.” Iris then crossed the room, carefully measured until she stood but a few feet away. She wasn’t about to crouch down and help him pick up his belongings, that wasn’t her style. Besides, this boy probably couldn't spare any more embarrassment as it were.
Her expression then tightened at another's entrance, stare thinning slightly as she listened to the unwelcome commentary. The snicker, the condescension; it grated against her nerves. The harshness of Avis’ words were almost enough to make her heart sink, leaving nothing but a bitter taste in the air. Since when were first years so arrogant?
With a mix of irritation and sympathy, Iris disregarded the bratty girl altogether. It wasn't worth it to engage in petty conflict, allowing her to slip away with a final devoid statement. “That wasn't helpful.” Her words were directed back to Marco, a new twinge of softness found in them. “Whatever’s got you like this, it's not worth tearing yourself apart over."

Avis walked down the halls away from the room, her footsteps echoing in her ears.
“That wasn't helpful. Whatever’s got you like this, it's not worth tearing yourself apart over."
Avis sighed. This girl clearly didn't understand. It wasn't going to help the boy to coddle him. He wasn't sad because he got an E, Avis thought, he was sad because he failed himself. The only way to not fail yourself is to not fail, to do better next time. Sure he shouldn't tear himself up over it, Avis should stop tearing herself up too. But that wasn't going to happen. The feeling of failure wasn't a switch. And he wasn't going to realize that without obvious and blunt interaction. This girl trying so hard to be that helper, yet not even bothering to help the kids with his books. It was the kids fault, she reminded herself, she had done nothing wrong. She paused, and thought about going back in the room, explaining herself to this girl, that she was only trying to help. She sighed again. This was there product of homeschooling. No social skills. With her luck, she'd probably make things worse. She really didn't need to make an enemy right now. Not in this massive new place with so many new people.

Looks like they had company. Kiana was starting to wonder whether too many older years would intimidate the boy and considered leaving, but the new arrival seemed to be friendly. They all looked to be younger years, as Kiana had never before seen them in any of her classes. She nodded at @Iris Athanasiuo. She sat silently next to the boy before he began to pack up his things in a hurry.
"I don't have a class here. I'm just here for a book," she said plainly.
"Is there anything you want to talk about?" Jade uncoiled and inspected the boy, the snake getting into the boy's face. Kiana coaxed her back, whispering, "Not now, Jade, don't scare him." The snake pouted.
Kiana observed the other arrival, @Avis Marlong. She glared, nearly growling, "Give him a break. Why don't you work on yourself before you pick on others' faults?"
Turning back to the boy, she softened her gaze, hoping she hadn't seemed to harsh. She ahrdly ever went out of her way to defend anyone, but she felt a sort of sympathy for the boy. As if she could relate. In her first year, Hogwarts was new to her and kind of scary. She just needed time to adjust.

Off to a Bad Start...

Everything happened so quickly.
Marco had gone from the calm stillness of an empty classroom, to hearing the rush of an incoming argument in a matter of seconds. He thought that being on the floor would help with ignoring that the classroom was quickly being filled, but no luck. They were all there, they were all looking at him, and they were all making judgments in their own way. Whether it be annoyance, pity, or some sort of equivalent to seeing a sad puppy in a rain. (Which could also be pity!) When Iris and Kiana approached, he seemed to stiffen a bit, but he didn't budge much when they seemed to be harmless. If anything, he was embarrassed, his red face showed that.
Alas, this other girl was certainly not harmless. Iris had offered some kind words, but it was immediately blocked out when the new stranger seemed to provide the devil's advocate version of comforting. You were an idiot, you did stupid things. It's not like this girl wasn't saying what he was telling himself already. His high standards let him fall into a dark hole of self pity, a hole far too deep for someone who was only eleven. But hearing it out loud, from someone he didn't even know, felt a lot more different than him saying it to himself. It meant that all of the insecurities that bounced around in his head were true, that someone could smell it off him like an odor.
Iris and Kiana were kind enough to stick around after the other girl left, but Marco still felt quiet terrible from the reaction. He rubbed his chest through his shirt a bit, his lungs felt like they were on fire, and his heart felt like it was going to beat outside of his chest sooner than later. He turned to see the snake, and he was too caught up in his fear of how vulnerable he had just been to scream at the snake. All he could offer in response to that were wide eyes at it. "Jade's a pretty name." Marco aired out quietly, a little less sad than he had just sounded.
He wiped his face and huffed. "I think pressure can be... Motivating. But..."He trailed off, sighing. "It seems as if I overreacted a bit. I must be having an off day." Marco cleared his throat, still quite embarrassed. "I don't think the girl who left was trying to be mean, just... A bit honest." He agreed with everything she said, he must've overlooked something in his homework. He was perfect in his academics, at least he liked to think so, but sometimes he thought too hard.
