Maggie pressed her fingers up against the glass, the heat from her hands fogging the crystal clear glass up. Before her was a broomstick. As a muggleborn, when she had first seen it, she was confused, to say the least. But now that someone had explained it to her, she was absolutely captivated. She was more than eager to hop on and fly off and along the clouds, but she couldn’t. She doubted she’d ever have enough money to afford a broomstick such as that one, it’s mahogany wood gleaming in the warm light of the shop. Hell, she could sell her house and she still wouldn’t have enough. Nonetheless, a girl could dream. Well, she was about to go off to Hogwarts, a school for magic. She had been told that she was a witch a few days ago, and that she was to go to Hogwarts to learn magic. At this point, she wouldn’t be surprised if golden coins started raining from the sky! She chuckled quietly to herself at the prospect of even being able to afford half the handle of that broom. It was ridiculous. She was so lost in her thoughts that she completely bumped into a random body, and she immediately began to apologize...
”I’m so sorry!” Maggie said, “I should be more careful!”

Carson was strolling down Diagon Alley, marveling at the sights around him. As a muggleborn, he was absolutely fascinated with the most seemingly mundane wizard things, but one thing had stood out: Quidditch. He’d first heard of the sport from one of his wizard friends, and it, like many other aspects of wizarding culture, fascinated him. He was so lost in his own thoughts that he wasn’t looking where he was going, and he walked right into someone full-force. “I’m so sorry!” the victim of Carson’s absentmindedness exclaimed, “I should be more careful!” Carson studied the girl as they stepped apart, each of them brushing their hands off on their clothes. She had light brown hair, and bangs that framed her face, and clear blue eyes, and a few freckles dancing across her cheeks. “Oh no, don’t worry about it,” Carson said, smiling somewhat bashfully, “It’s really my fault— I just got caught up in all of, well, this. Carson said, chuckling lightly. Sometimes it seemed like he was the only muggleborn in existence, but he probably only felt that way because everyone else had caught up already, and he was hopelessly confused. He glanced behind the girl, noticing a shop window that caught his eye. Broomsticks sat, almost glowing, in the shop window, and hoardes of children crowded around them to catch a glimpse of them.

Maggie grinned at the boy, she couldn’t help but agree with him. She, as a muggleborn, had found Diagon Alley completely confusing and absolutely terrifying. It was intimidating, but a small part of her recognized the insane beauty of it all. The boy before her had been a relief, however, as before this, it’d seemed like she was the only muggleborn on the planet. She studied him for a brief second before replying. He had thick, dark brown hair and brown eyes that, even at a young age, had smile wrinkles. He wore glasses, and he had seemingly naturally tanned skin. “You’re a muggleborn too then? I’m glad someone is, I feel like the only one on the planet at this point.” she laughed, letting out her doubts, albeit lightheartedly. “You’ll be at Hogwarts too then, I suppose?” she asked. The boy looked around Maggie’s age, he wasn’t much taller than she was, but maybe he was just short. “I’m Maggie, by the way, Maggie Parker. Which house do you want to get in?” she asked, as both a means of conversation and a weak attempt at seeing if the boy knew anything about Hogwarts in the first place.

Carson grinned at Maggie, an overwhelming sense of relief washing over him when she revealed that she was a muggleborn as well. “I’m Carson,” he said, “and have no bloody clue what house I want to be in, because I don’t know what they are in the first place.” he said, somewhat sourly, “What about you? Do you know anything about magic, all that?” he asked, somewhat desperate for an answer. She seemed like she knew more than him at this point, with her mentioning Hogwarts and houses, but he still had hope. “I passed a couple places while I was walking, I saw an absolutely wicked joke shop and an ice cream place.” he paused for a moment, “Do you want to talk about it over there? These brooms are cool and all, but I’m bloody starving.” He pointed over to the ice cream shop behind him, not looking back, however. Okay, sue him for thinking she was pretty. Truth be told, he was relieved that she was a muggleborn for two reasons: one being that he was actually confused, and the other being a good conversation topic. He didn’t usually care if he was getting along well with people or not, but he was somewhat desperate to get to know Maggie Parker, and, being the most stubborn person he knew, it was going to happen.

Maggie grinned at Carson as he offered an alternative place to talk than the crowded street of Diagon Alley. “Sure.” she said, though she was painfully aware that she probably wouldn’t have enough money to pay for anything in the first place. She’d already used it all up with buying hand-me-down robes and books, and she didn’t want to waste any of the money she had left. They walked over to Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, though, aimlessly chatting about the wizarding world, and the differences between how it must’ve looked from a pure-blood and a muggleborn perspective. Maggie had ended up becoming very close friends with Carson that day, and she found a lot in commmon with him. She told him all about her family, and how she had so many siblings and how much she loved them, and she fondly told stories the pranks and crazy stunts she would pull before she got accepted into Hogwarts. She ended up even telling him about the one time she and a few of her friends had put rats in their Principal’s desk once, and how mad her principal had gotten. She didn’t fail to include how proud her mum had been of her— Mrs. Parker had hated the principal as well. Maggie had ended up spending most of the day with Carson, and they’d quickly become very close.
