Meiyu was not one for tears. She never was. Seeing her teary-eyed family surrounding her at Kings Cross, each taking turns to embrace the young girl in enamouring hugs. One by one. As the eldest Xiang child, blinked at both her parents. It was until her maternal grandmother, Agatha Knight, spoke up, reminding the hybrid family of the significance today held. It marked a new beginning, a new legacy.
"Mei," her grandmother began, sternly, "since the acceptance letter arrived, you've not shown much eagerness to attend Hogwarts, but one must make the family proud. You have Knight blood running through your veins, use is to your advantage."
It felt as though, yet again, the young girl had failed to make her grandmother proud. Coming from a lineage of successful witches and wizards within the pure-blooded Knight family name, Meiyu feared she would not live up to the success of her ancestors. She had never left home before, she always had her two younger brothers pestering her, their family home in Oxfordshire was always full of laughter the two emit whilst up to their mischief. Meiyu looked around, a variety of new and returning students saying their goodbyes to their loved ones, whilst she received a scolding was nothing new. It was expected. Whilst Hogwarts wasn't. That was what scared her.
It wasn't long until the loud echos of the train horns blared across the platform, forcing the young family to part. Her parents watched the young girl proudly, as she boarded the train, boding farewell to their eldest for the new path awaiting her. Meiyu slightly smiled, giving her family one last look before yelling out, "I'll write to you all!", dunking her head back into the train and making her way to an empty carriage.
After looking for what felt like a while, Meiyu settled on an empty carriage, placing her belongings in the overhead compartment. She struggled to reach, having to stand on the seats to put things away safely, only to sit down and let out a sigh she didn't know she was holding. Looking out of the window, Meiyu watched the train descend onto the platform and out of London, routing to Hogwarts. She didn't know what would lie ahead, would she make any friends? What would the classes be like?
All she could do, was use her small fingers to twirl her pearl necklace, a family heirloom she had inherited from her maternal mother upon her first instance of magic, a few years ago. She felt the weight lifted off her shoulders already, she was ready to make a name for herself, rather than be tied to the Knight lineage.
"Remember, maintain balance in all things."

She gazed out the open door at the remaining students on the platform hugging their parents and siblings goodbye. She couldn't help but feel jealousy with a pang of anger that she stifled into sadness. She hadn't asked her parents to accompany her and if she had asked they would have come. The problem was that she knew the carefully curated to-do list in their heads like the back of her hand. It was knowing that list that made their relationship a calm one. Angélique of course was at the top of their lists, as any parent would make their child be, so asking for their presence today would be met with acceptance. But she knew that she was placed up top of that list due to the parental expectation to care for their child above all else. She was on that list not by choice, and it showed in moments like today. Anyways, if they had come, her mother would rattle on about how much money she was missing by being here and her father would probably complain about the traffic and ruin her overall mood on what will be the first day of the rest of her life. Snapping out of her thoughts, she saw that the student she had been watching was making her way to the door she was standing in, waving behind at her family. Angélique hoisted her bags back up and shuffled down the hallway, peeking into the compartment windows to find a free seat. Unfortunately, all the compartments seemed to be full of either older students or other first years already well past their introductions. Finally, Angélique found a compartment that was relatively empty, save for another first year girl looking out the window whilst twirling with her necklace. Hoping she wouldn't spook her by opening the door, Angélique gently slid the door open and made a small cough. "Hello, is it okay if I sit here?" |

For a moment, Meiyu had doubted the train's departure time, it was as though she disbelieved that a route the Hogwarts Express would frequent numerous times during the year, would somehow depart at a much later time. She had maintained eye contact with her parents and her grandparents for as long as she was able to, until the train's horn echoed loudly almost deafening the countless of parents who had bid farewell to their children for the first time or as though it had become a new profound routine with the new academic year approaching. With no moment to accumulate any thoughts on her feelings in regard to leaving home for the first time, a young girl appeared in the previously empty carriage which had fortunately had Meiyu as its sole occupant. The small cough made in effort to bring notice to the young girl had caught Meiyu's attention, followed by "Hello, is it okay if I sit here?"
Without forgetting basic etiquette, the girl nodded in response, quickly realising the response she had given was inadequately sufficient. "Of course, I thought I'd enjoy a train ride alone though I am grateful to be amongst some company." Meiyu spoke clearly as though she was being acquainted with one of her parents co-workers from the Ministry at balls. "Meiyu Xiang." She smiled gently at the other soul who had occupied the previously emptier carriage. In the few moments of silence that followed, the girl made a conscious effort to quickly note any perceptions she had of her peer. Unable to pinpoint what it was about the fellow that almost raised Meiyu's senses, it was at this point she had noticed the evidently heavy leather bag, which would be difficult to store given their similarities in height which reassured Meiyu that the girl was of similar age.
"Need a hand?" She questioned despite her counteractive actions, immediately rising from her seat to assist the other.

| ===== | "Meiyu Xiang." Meiyu's introduction snapped Angélique out of her thoughts. As she smiled gently, Angélique scrambled for her name, shuffling in place a little. "Angélique.. Oh, uh, Dupont. Angélique Dupont." Messing up her introduction was one thing, but forgetting her own name was something new altogether. Meiyu was watching her now, and Angélique felt like every part of her was sprawling out compared to Meiyu who was so composed, so she quickly tried to pull herself together for the sake of manners. "Need a hand?" Meiyu questioned, and Angélique felt a wave of relief. She had over-packed a little too close to the sun, and her eleven year old body was still not quite up to the task of hurling luggage overhead. "Oh yes please. she sighed. Hauling the bag together, they managed to stuff it in the overhead compartment without anything falling on their heads. Angélique collapsed onto the opposite seat of the one Meiyu had been in when she arrived. Looking up at her, she noticed the lack of house colours of her robe. "Are you a first year too?" |

Upon noticing Angélique's almost dazed and disoriented figure, as though she had succumb to day dreaming, Meiyu had opted to immediately help her with her bags, successfully placing the baggage into the overhead compartments with Angélique's assistance, she shuffled back into the seat she had claimed, the warm remnants of her earlier claim welcoming her once more. Her doe cat like eyes fixated on the girl, who had now began her questioning — something Meiyu had dreaded, though was to be expected upon first encounters, which Meiyu had presumed to be the result of her clothing choice for the long ride ahead.
Her parents had reminded her a few days prior to departure that she was not required to wear the robes she had accumulated a few days prior to the new term. It had become clear to Meiyu that not everyone had been graced with similar information prior, evident by Angélique's attire, she had foolishly worn her robes for the ride ahead. "I am, pleasure to meet a fellow first year." She responded, stifling a slight almost awkward smile, not entirely comfortable with engaging in small talk considering it was highly likely their paths would cross more often than not during their shared time at the magical school.
Despite having almost a prejudice like judgement towards others who clearly behaved as though they were of a different class through inadequate etiquette, Meiyu was adamant that something about Angélique was different. The girl was pretty, prepared and graceful. It does take some wits to appear on the express in uniform, especially as a first year, her uncle Cyrus had drilled in her the significance of not appearing to evidently be an outside, yet in this circumstance, Angélique's diligence was dully noted. "You know, you didn't have to wear your robes on the train," she began, opting to avoid her usual pretentiously shallow behaviour, maintaining a polite and what she hoped to be a friendly tone as she gestured for her to also take a seat.
"Usually, you'd get changed prior to the sorting ceremony, any specific house you're hoping for you are you going into this blind?" Meiyu questioned with one of her brows slightly raising, unsure of her blood status and familiarity to the wizarding world.
