Outside the Ball
Kyle walked outside the ballroom and slowly made his way outside the large castle into the cool night air. He knew it wasn’t a full moon tonight but he still couldn’t bring himself to look up to the night sky and look at the moon, the thought of it sent a chill down his spine and he shivered slightly. Kyle just pulled his jacket tighter around him and hoped Marla thought it was from the chill of the night air. He was surprised that she decided to follow him outside, he tried to make her hate him. He tried to push her away and make her keep her distance but it just seemed like the girl was determined to stay. So he needed to explain to her why he was bad news. Why she needed to get away from him and stay far away.
Kyle made his way to a bench and he sat down, letting out a heavy sigh as he did. He leaned forward and rested his arms on his knees as he stared at the dirt, his right leg bouncing with nervous energy. Nobody but the ministry and hogwarts staff knew what he was, he had never told anyone. Not even other family besides his parents knew the truth.
Kyle tried to start the conversation a bunch of times, opening and closing his mouth but each time the words fail him and he just stays silent. There was no real right way to say what he was. No special words or phrases to make what he had to say easier. So finally...he decided on what he should go with. ”You really want to know what my deal is Quin? You already know. You said it better than I can” he reaches up and grabs his collar and pulls It aside, he stretches the material farther than it should move and reveals deep jagged scars on his shoulder and down onto the top of his chest on his left side. The scarring looked like the savage bite of a large creature, and while it had scarred it looked as if it hadn’t and probably would never fully properly heal. ”...I'm a rabid animal”

[quote]Despite being in the depths of Spring and almost summer, it honestly felt below freezing. While Scotland was truly wondrous, the weather could be brutal sometimes. Thank god she wore sweats or Marla would probably be an ice block by now. And it seemed that Kyle felt the same way, he was hugging himself tightly as if his life depended on it. While Marla couldn't blame him, the weather was bitter, she let out an almost inaudible laugh to herself. It might have just been the overflowing amount of nervousness brewing in her stomach, or that she never saw Kyle this vulnerable... But it was somehow hilarious to her. Before she started letting out larger laughs and made Kyle change his mind, she (literally) bit her tongue and followed him until they came to a halt at a bench on the grounds.
Sitting down, Marla could tell that what Kyle was going to say was going to be bad. Like, really bad. She never saw terror in anyone's eyes ever the way she saw in Kyle's right now. It seemed like he wanted to spill the words, even yell them off of a cliff, but his body wouldn't let them get the words out. She gave him a look to nonverbally suggest that he takes his time, especially if it was this tough for him to say. After a few minutes of back and forth, he finally spoke.
"You really want to know what my deal is Quin? You already know. You said it better than I can." She furrowed her brows as he stated the last sentence. They hadn't spoken in months. When had she ever, ever said something to him that was... Well, what he was? Or what happened to him? And then it hit her. Was it something she had said that... That day in the corridors? Her blood ran cold as she watched him pulling his collar to the side, revealing a giant scar running across his body. She was a bit confused as she eyed the now healed injury, but everything began to add up when he said something else.
"I'm a rabid animal."
No. He wasn't a... No. Marla knew exactly what he was talking about as the words reluctantly spilled out of his mouth. He was a werewolf. Something she had read about in several books, a curse where one has an agonizing transformation into a werewolf on the full moon. She looked down at the scar and back up into his eyes, remembering the almost feral glare in them at the beginning of the year. What shocked her even more was that she had even called Kyle a rabid animal. Marla touched her lips lightly with her fingertips, disgusted that she screamed that at him.
Without saying a word, Marla took Kyle by the arms and pulled him into the hug, looking up at the moon as they locked arms.
"You are not a rabid animal." She stated softly, though still sounding ever so determined. Letting go of him after a few seconds, she bit her lip and hugged herself as a cold gust of wind flew through the air.
"I don't want to pry, we both know how that went," She started to say with a quick and quiet laugh, suddenly feeling quite aware of the now rough patch of skin where Kyle had hit her,"But if you're up for talking more about it.. And I completely understand if you aren't, believe me, when did it happen?" She asked in a sorrow tone, glancing at the rugged scar every now and again.

As soon as the words left Kyle's mouth he let go of his collar and covered up the scar from his bite.he looked up from the dirt and over to Marla and he regretted it almost right away. He saw her hand go up to her lips and the hurt in her eyes as she realized what he was and the truth behind calling him a Rabid Animal sunk in. He could tell she regretted it. Then before he could stop her she pulled him into a tight hug and instead of resisting he he leaned into it and rested his face on her shoulder for a moment. The hug was nice, he wasn’t used to this kind of tenderness. Mainly because he typically pushed away and fought any attempts. When the hug broke he saw her shudder against the cold and he thought a moment beforehand he slipped off his leather jacket and draped it over her shoulders. His Henley was long sleeved and ever since he was bit he always ran kind of warm.
Then she spoke again and He let out a sigh and rubbed his neck as he looked back at the dirt. When did it happen. It was a simple enough question really. But just thinking about when it happened flashes of the event jumped into his mind. A quiet night with his parents, noises outside, the loud crash of the front door being smashed, the sound of his father yelling as he’s attacked, the sight of the beast tackling his mom, the smell of the monsters fur, the pain of its teeth breaking his flesh.
He cleared his throat and and the first time he tried to speak his voice broke and he stopped. He took a deep breath before he could finally answer ”A couple months before the semester started...it came for my parents and I got in the way...”

[quote]As soon as Marla got a small glimpse of the scar, Kyle hastily pulled his shirt back up. Almost as if he were ashamed. No– not as if. He was. Marla didn't want to say it out loud, but if she were a werewolf, she'd be ashamed too. Though the Gryffindor would never, ever admit that thought even crossed her mind. Ever.
Right as the two let go of hugging each other, a heavy sheet could be felt on the redhead's back. She let out a yelp and scrunched up her shoulders, before realizing that it was Kyle's leather jacket. Marla felt her face warm up. How could she be so stupid? It was just Kyle, not a blanket of death that would wrap her up into impending doom. Unless that was a thing that leather did. Honestly, Marla wouldn't be surprised if that were a thing. The magic world had some weeeird stuff...
On a darker note, Kyle began to explain to Marla when and how he became a... Well, you know. She had never seen the boy this broken, this was truly rivaling the abandoned bathrooms incident. As soon as he explained vaguely the events that had unfolded resulting in the blood curse, questions filled her mind. Why was a werewolf after his parents? What did turning feel like? But she kept her mouth shut. He was definitely not proud of his past, and Marla wasn't going to push anything on him that he wasn't open to talking about. While he was talking about it now, it was really hard for him to do, and he was only telling her because Kyle had punched her in the face at the beginning of the year.
"I'm sorry." She murmured, glancing at the ground and back up at him. Marla was honestly speechless. Or, lacking anything that would make him feel better. What should she say? "Hey, you have a painful transformation into a rabid beast where you are completely aware of it and have to watch every vulgar thing you do with no control but at least you can smell pretty well"? Yeah, no. "Why are you telling me out of all people?"

Kyle didn’t care if he was hated, if people thought he was a jerk or ass or an idiot, he didn’t care if people were disgusted by him or if people wrote him off as a waste of time. The only thing he couldn’t stand, was being pitied. Ever since he was bit his mother treated him like he was made of glass, the people at the ministry looked at him like he was a wounded puppy and spoke calmly and deliberately and always said ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘this must be hard’ or ‘I know how you just feel’ and it made him want to just scream with how frustrating it was. So every time Marla apologized it was like a knife digging into that nerve. But he couldn’t deny, atleast it didn’t feel hollow like with the ministry clowns.
Then came the hard question, why was he telling her? There was the obvious reason of despite their clashes he did like her. She was fun to get into trouble with and even in detention they had fun messing around. And that was exactly why he needed her to know the truth. He tried to leave his curse out of mind and try to make friends and connections but he was reminded with his first transformation that he needed to keep away from everyone or else they will get hurt. ”because wer-...because what I am. Those close to monsters are always the ones to get hurt. Trying to push away didn’t work so...maybe the truth will”

[quote]Selfish. She couldn't help but just feel... Self-centered, grimy, and overall: selfish. It was obvious that Kyle was dreading talking about this, and she had pushed so much over the months of interacting with him that he was forced to tell her this. God, she was such a jerk. And here she was, asking questions, on top of questions, and more questions. Why? Because she was thirsty for knowledge and how it happened. Each word she spoke, the weight on her chest getting more heavy, guilt piling up sentence after sentence.
"It won't!" She shouted, releasing the frustration that had built up over the minutes of talking to him after his attempt to push her away. After everything he had done, for some reason, she had a strong feeling that she couldn't leave him. Ugh, at this point, she would normally run for the hills... But after she had found out the weight of the situation? There was no way in hell. "You can't push me away after this. You're stuck with me for a while, Rook." She joked, trying to make light of the very obviously grim situation. Looking up at the boy and giving him a smile, she pulled his leather jacket tighter around herself and pulled her knees to her chest.
"Anyways, this is random, but when we were in detention, didn't we make a deal about pulling another heist together?" She asked, raising her eyebrows suggestively. If they were supposedly friends again, at this point he had to do it. They spent plenty of time apart, and if they did rob another classroom (and succeed this time) it would give them a chance to catch up. Even if he said no, it was worth a try, right?

As Kyle sat there waiting for a response he ran through all the possible outcomes. More pity, perhaps her listening to him and waking away, maybe yelling at him for being a jerk. Honestly he had no idea, Marla was the first person he had ever told his secret and he wasn’t sure exactly what was going to happen next. What was supposed to happen?
"You can't push me away after this. You're stuck with me for a while, Rook."
Kyle blinked as he heard this. After everything he had done, after what he told her, she still refused to be pushed away. Why? It didn’t make any sense. But she was right in a way, with her being the only one who knew his secret if she chose to remain within his life then there was little he could do but accept it. After all he chose to confide in her. Then came the last thing he was expecting. She wanted to perform another heist with him. The question bounced around in his head for a few moments as he processed it until the stress and pent up worry broke and a laugh escaped his lips. It was a hardy and long laugh until finally he leaned back into the bench and stretched his arms out to rest along the back of the bench and one of them behind Marla’s shoulders in the process.
”Tell you what Quin” he said between small chuckles after he was done laughing ”next year I’ll have some new things planned. Gotta make sure we get away with it this time” he looked over toward Marla and answered her suggestive eyebrow raise and cocked an eyebrow of his own and his usual smirk found its way to his face

[quote]Was it a mistake for her to mention something so lighthearted in a situation such as this? God, he just told her about a brutal blood curse that could ruin his life forever, and here she was asking if she wanted to pull fucking pranks again. Kyle opened his mouth to speak, a devilish glint in his eyes. Her adrenaline kicked in, bracing for impact, eyes wide for a moment.
And then he laughed. He was.. Happy? God, was it contagious. A wave of relief washed over her as she began to let out a few giggles as well, playing with the leather jacket draped over her shoulders nervously. Okay, she didn't hit a nerve. That was good. After he had stopped laughing, Kyle had claimed he had some things planned. Her cheeks flushed a light pink, a mixed feeling of nervousness and sheer excitement bubbling in her stomach. What, it was just Kyle, right? They were just playing another prank. She shouldn't be this happy..
"Ey? Like what?" She asked, raising her eyebrows up and down humorously. "We better not get caught this time, okay? I'll murder you if we do." She narrowed her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips. "Ok, seriously. It's a deal. Maybe this time we can steal somethin' cooler from the school, yeah? We gotta top last time." Excitement was laced throughout her rushed sentences as a grin crept its way onto her face. She looked at Kyle one last time, glancing down at the collar he had pulled down to reveal his scar. And all she could think was how relieving it was to be talking to him again. Nobody had the balls to do crazy schemes and pranks like the boy with wild blue eyes that was sitting right next to her. So much for Gryffindors being brave..
"I'm glad we got to talk." She added softly with a shrug, glancing to the side. Was that too warm-and-huggy? Ugh. It couldn't hurt to be honest, right?

"Ok, seriously. It's a deal. Maybe this time we can steal somethin' cooler from the school, yeah? We gotta top last time."
Kyle couldn't help but smile at Marla. Despite everything he did Marla not only still wanted to be around him and talk to him but do things with him. Get into trouble and have fun like nothing had happened. and she seemed so Genuine, not forcing it or fake or condescending. That said...if he was being completely honest he didn't have anything planned yet for next year. He was just trying to impress Marla. But, now he was going to have to come up with something pretty impressive. he let out a slight contended sigh and looked up towards the sky some "Trust me Quinn. What we get up to next year is going to be great. Just you wait." he looked over towards her and smirked.
then she added 6 soft words and looked away and Kyle could feel his face get warm and he cleared his throat and he also looked away and for a few moments they would sit in silence. Suddenly Kyle would get to his feet and scratch the back of his head "Its late Quinn...I should be getting to bed. Early morning" he took a couple steps away before stopping and letting out a slight huff."Listen Quinn...I'm. happy we got to talk too" Kyle scratched the back of his head and turned to leave, forgetting about Marla still having his leather Jacket.
(Unless stopped Kyle exits the thread)
