Maia skipped up to the owlery, a letter in her hand. She knew he was anxiously waiting for her letter confirming her house and safety. He was worried for her, as he always was.

"Dear Dad,
So far Hogwarts has been nothing short of amazing! Though I do miss you, Mason, and Margo, I can't say I want to go home just yet. You never know though, maybe I'll change my mind on that later.
I was sorted into Ravenclaw!I'm really excited to meet new people. I hope to make many new friends. As of right now, I haven't met anyone. It's mainly because I'm a little too nervous. Hopefully, that'll change soon. Hogwarts won't be much fun without friends, will it?
I'm excited to start my classes. Herbology might make me a bit homesick. Divination seems like it'll be fun too. The Great Hall was amazing! It was so magical. When I went to get sorted, it felt so surreal. I mean, I've been waiting my whole life wondering what house I'd be in!
Well, I don't have much more to say. Sorry, this is so short, but not much has happened yet. I love you lots!
-Maia Davidson

Maia sighed as she wrapped her letter on an owl. She really hoped making friends would be easier going forward. So far she'd had no luck. Maia assumed she was just a little shy. Maybe there was someone out there was the same way. Until then, she'd try her best. She absentmindedly started humming and continued to tie her letter to one of the owl's legs, before noticing a student behind her.

"Oh, hello there. I didn't see you." She said with a smile and a small laugh.

Alyssa looked up in surprise. A Ravenclaw girl stood near her, she turned around and faced her. A soft smile formed on her lips. " Hi, sorry, I thought I would be alone up here. It is pretty late." she responded.

The Owlery was a beautiful place, the different kinds of owls that resided in the tower was astounding. She had returned to the Owlery to see whether her mother's owl had gotten lost. She knew this would not be probable but she hoped that her mother had replied. It had been a few days since she sent her first letter and she was wondering whether she should send another one to find out whether everything is okay.

At the end of this thought, she had decided to rather write to her brother. She knew he would not ignore post from her and he would send a response as soon as he could.

She turned back to the owl from the school that she had chosen to take her letter home. It was a brown barn owl, he seemed comfortable with her. He screeched as he took off from his perch. She stared after the owl, a blank expression on her face.

Loneliness followed her around like an old friend ready to receive her.

The Gryffindor girl looked out after the owl, wistfully. Maia wondered what she was wondering about. Who did she write to? Did they write back? Was she sad or just thinking?

Maia wouldn't know unless she asked her anything. But what should she say? She could ask her name or what she liked to do. She didn't want to come off as weird. But she didn't want to come off as rude for being silent. She would rather be weird than rude. Maia was just complaining about needing to make new friends, Maybe she should start here. After all, you can't make friends without talking.

Maia thought for a few moments more. She should say something.

Now is a good as time as ever to start making friends.

Maia looked at the girl. She seemed really nice. It's not like anything could go too bad. Maia summoned up all her confidence and courage.

"Yeah, it is pretty late. But I knew my Dad would storm up here and demand to see me if I didn't write at my earliest chance. He's very overprotective. " Maia laughed at her own joke, "My name is Maia Davidson, what's yours?"

Maia smiled again, hoping to make her feel comfortable. Maybe she had just met her first friend at Hogwarts.

"My father is really too busy to care about school things. He is a businessman with no time for himself." he was not a bad father, he just did not have a lot of time to spend with children. His work kept him out of the real world.

"My name is Maia Davidson, what's yours?" she listened intently as the girl introduced herself. She was putting herself out there, she had a lot more courage than Alyssa could muster up.
" I am Alyssa Warren, first-year Gryffindor, but that was clear from my robes. I am being absurd." she chuckled softly. She felt a bit uncomfortable, but this was only due to her being alone most days, she was not sure how to really talk to other students her age. The only people she spoke to back home was her brothers and they hardly counted since they were family and she was forced to converse with them.

" Are you enjoying your stay at Hogwarts?" she asked as she pondered about the question herself, she was unsure of how to answer that right at this moment. It was something new though. She smiled as she thought of her time at Hogwarts. This seemed to be the happiest she had been in ages. She was surrounded by many students like herself, and she had met a few who were nice to her, even if it was only brief.

"Are you enjoying your stay at Hogwarts?" The girl, Alyssa she now knew, asked. Maia thought about her answer for a moment. She knew it was a simple question. It wasn't a very deep question, but she couldn't help but think about her answer. How had her stay at Hogwarts been so far? The normal person would say, "Yes, are you?, and that would be the end of it.

But Maia was trying to make a friend, so she needed to make it a bit more personal. She thought about the honest answer. Relationships were all about being honest right? Yes, she had enjoyed Hogwarts a lot. She stared at her feet for a second.
Maia looked up and decided on her answer.

All of this happened in a matter of seconds. The breeze changed slightly, and Maia shivered. That reminded her that she didn't want to keep Alyssa waiting. It was late after all. Maia tucked her curly hair behind her left ear.

"I suppose, though I have found it a bit hard to make friends. Though that's more of me being shy than anyone else's fault. I suppose you would be my first Hogwarts friend.," Maia smiled," Have you enjoyed your stay here?"

She hoped Alyssa had, she seemed very nice after all.

She thought for a moment, she was right this was a completely new setting for all of them, or at least that was what she thought. This was not something that she would do at home, but there are no owleries around that she knows of. She chuckled softly at the thought.

"It has been a bit difficult, I am not so used to being around so many people. To be completely honest I sometimes get anxiety attacks when I get placed in new situations. So getting placed in a class full of children is a bit odd. I was homeschooled, so my social skills are very poor, and I tend to ramble on even when people have lost interest." she looked down, she was rambling at the moment, hopefully, she was not keeping her from doing something else.

"I am not sure I miss home though, it was quiet and I was always in my room, and if I were not in my room then I was at the library." She thought back home, it was a sad sight to see, it was gloomy, the walls were painted an eery grey color. The inside seemed dark and cold. Her mother liked expensive furniture, but she also liked the colors white and black, so their house was just a building, it did not feel like a home should feel. It did not invite people to stay. It just showed off how well off they were. She hated that place.

Loneliness followed her around like an old friend ready to receive her.

Maia listened to the girl talk about her past. She was glad Alyssa was opening up to her.

"I ramble a lot too. This year I've been rather shy. Usually, I can talk to just about anyone about anything, but I guess I'm a little nervous. I doubt you'll have any trouble making nice friends. You seem pretty great in my opinion," Maia smiled, trying to convey her joy.

"I don't miss home that much either. Maybe I will eventually, but right now this castle seems pretty great. I live with my father and 2 siblings. My father owns a floral shop that has a small apartment over it. I had to share a room with my brother and sister, so it was always pretty hectic. I spent most of my time either with the plants or outside. There was never a quiet moment!" Maia laughed, "Maybe one day you could come to see the shop after school ends."

Maia wasn't sure what Alyssa might say, they had just met after all. But Maia felt as if she and Alyssa were friends, and she wanted Alyssa to feel that too. Maia looked out the window quickly, glancing at the owl with a letter to her father as it flew away.
