It was Novalie's first Potions class where she would finally get to brew a potion, and she couldn't hide her excitement! Although the previous lessons were intriguing, she had struggled to keep track of all the theoretical discussions, her attention often drifting to other distractions in the classroom - like a spider devouring a fly in the corner or a group of students whispering mysteriously among themselves.

Everything still felt like a dream, a haze of all the adventures she once imagined with her friends back home. Who would have thought she’d be standing here now, in a classroom about to learn the art of potion-making?

She wondered with a mischievous grin.. would they be making something as sinister as poison today, using macabre ingredients like frog legs and brains? The thought made her giggle as she bounced on her feet! ..Perhaps she would have known the lesson plan if she'd paid more attention in the last few classes.

Soon, the lesson began and the room fell silent. Novalie listened more or less intently, eager to get her hands on the ingredients.
They were going to brew the Herbicide Potion- related to the environment or something like that - she didn't catch all the details in her excitement. Ignoring most of the instructions, Novalie turned to to the girl beside her.

"We finally get to make a potion! Oh my god, oh my god!", she exclaimed, grinning widely, oblivious to the fact that she didn’t even know the student’s name.

"I'm totally going to ace this! You know what? I'll make ten- no, twenty potions! And I'll use them all for pranks! Yes!"

Her eyes shimmered a lighter shade of green, reflecting her overwhelming excitement triggering her Metamorphmagus ability. To those who didn’t know Novalie well, the change in her eye color might go unnoticed, but it was a telltale sign of her bubbling enthusiasm.

Evpraksiya had a slight idea of what her first potions class would entail.

Her oldest sister, Lidochka, was the potion's master in their family. A mysterious smile painted on erubescent red lips as she brewed potions that could do anything from making a man believe liquid metal was water to turning people back from cold stone. The youngest Vinogradova loved to watch her work, oftentimes sitting on the small velvet stool Lidochka set out specifically for her after catching her peeking around the door one too many times.

But with her sister's penchant for mischief and drama, she'd weaved tales to Evpraksiya about the witch's first potions class being to create an antidote to the poison they'd all been dosed with when they walked through their classroom door. She spoke about how her professor had them all watch the horrific effects of the poison work on the people who hadn't managed to create a usable antidote, how she, of course, made a perfect antidote and wasn't affected so her little sister could trust anything Lidochka gave her.

Lera immediately called it out as “bullshit” and challenged Lidochka as to why her first potions class was learning the different techniques for extracting the juice from Jumping Beans. From there on, they devolved into a passionate argument that ended when Mother sweetly told them all to, “Be civil and finish your supper or you can figure out how to cure poison the muggle way.” Which promptly killed both the argument and Evpraksiya's appetite for dinner.

(It was fine, Lera grumbled a bit about the extra food being pushed her way but ate it without protest.)

However, when the Slytherin finally came to Hogwarts, she didn't expect it to be so casual. Evpraksiya expected something... stricter perhaps? A regimented routine, perhaps an orientation or two on how class advancements and the school worked, it was a shock to her then, to be granted so much free reign over her free time she assumed that the course work would be more lenient if not easier.

All this was to say that Evpraksiya had varying knowledge about this particular class so the morning before she'd walk to it, she ensured that she was completely prepared. Light hair pulled back into a low bun with her signature satin green ribbon and touches of makeup here and there to cover her eye bangs from last night's tutorial of terrible sleep. It wasn't rejuvenating in the way it usually was but felt like putting on a set of armor that made it easier to face the day. Makeup made covering over cracks in any facade much much easier.

Regardless of poison and antidotes or theory and learning how to use knives again, she resolved to take the class seriously, focusing on the lecture and only faintly acknowledging that someone had sat beside her.

Evpraksiya was scribbling the last words of the herbicide lecture in her small cloth-bound notebook when Novalie began to speak, the girl's sudden outburst taking her by surprise. After a moment of confusion, Evpraksiya turned to face her table partner, taking a moment to observe the girl who had suddenly started to speak to her. The hair stood out first and for a moment, Evpraksiya wondered if it was worth it to ask for what products she used. The redhead reminded her of the wily fox she saw in a muggle motion picture. Fantastic Mr. Fox, wasn't it...?

The Vinogradova raised an eyebrow at the sheer excitement of the student next to her, her calm demeanor slightly shaken by the contagious enthusiasm. “Twenty potions?” she repeated incredulously, “Are you trying to set a record for most potions brewed at once or just trying to cause chaos?” Evpraksiya asked with a hint of amusement in her usually aloof expression.

She resisted the urge to look closely at the redhead's eyes to see if they'd shift color again- she'd never seen a metamorphagus before in person! It was rude to stare and instead, the Evpraksiya looked back down at the neat shorthand notes she'd made during the lecture, scanning it again for the instructions just to be sure that she hadn't memorized any wrong steps.

Perfectly inked letters. Although she did struggle a bit with the English language itself, it wasn't particularly noticeable. At least, she hoped. Its grammar structure was incredibly different, and she still hadn't gotten over how she'd thought that she'd need to conjugate the word "candy" according to the person eating it. Embarrassing.

But- maybe this class would be interesting after all.

As the other girl reacted to Novalie’s plans, the Ravenclaw girl turned to face her again and suddenly, it was as if time slowed in the classroom. She wanted to boast about her ambitious mix of record-breaking and chaos-making, but the words stalled in her throat as something else entirely captured her focus.

She hadn’t noticed before just how breathtakingly beautiful the girl was.

Her blonde hair seemed to shimmer, falling in silky waves that looked impossibly soft. Her eyes - wide, almost ethereal - gave her an otherworldly look, like a delicate porcelain doll come to life. And her skin.. Novalie could swear it was flawless.

This - this was exactly how she imagined angels!

Novalie’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching slightly as she tilted her head, unable and unwilling to hide the awe washing over her. She stared, mesmerized, unashamed in the slightest.

“Wow…”, she breathed, “Are you, like, a-”

She paused, her mind scrambling for the right word, her pulse quickening as she recalled fragments of her research. During one of her brief, distracted attempts at understanding her Metamorphmagus ability, she had stumbled upon mentions of other magical abilities and races. She wasn’t one for books - they rarely held her attention for longer than a few minutes at best- but there had been one race known for their incredible beauty. What was it again?

“Ah!”, her face lighting up as the memory clicked into place, “A Veela?”

Yes, that was it!
Novalie beamed proudly, though she knew little of the difference between a full Veela, a half-Veela or simply someone born with stunning looks.

But that didn’t matter! Her green eyes, still shining from her earlier excitement, now reflected nothing but pure admiration. She continued to gaze at the girl, completely unafraid to let her feelings show.

Concerned by the sudden silence, Evpraksiya glanced up at her partner, worry creasing her brow as her seatmate stared vacantly ahead. She raised her hand, rosy fingertips hesitant hovering just above the redhead's shoulder—she really did need to ask her about that hair routine later— unsure of what to do.

Left unchecked, her thoughts raced. Was this a stroke? Did she have a medical condition? Evpraksiya certainly wasn’t qualified to handle a medical emergency! She was just moments away from calling Professor Regan when the girl suddenly blinked back to life and spoke a combination of words that froze Evpraksiya's mind.

Now it was Evpraksiya's turn to be stunned, her mind grappling to come to terms with what the redhead had just said.

She stared at the awed Ravenclaw, a delicate flush creeping up the back of her own neck and tinging the tips of her ears. Compliments weren’t exactly foreign to her, but no one had ever mistaken her for a Veela before. Besides, Veela couldn't even attend Hogwarts! The girl must be muggleborn not to know that. Well— either a muggleborn or born to magic with woefully inadequate parents.

“No— dear vilas no— I’m not a Veela.” Evpraksiya replied, finally meeting the other girl's impossibly green eyes. Human eyes shouldn’t be that vibrant, surely? It reminded Evpraksiya of the vibrant jewel-toned forests that Ulyana used to take her to visit before she grew stubborn enough to insist that she wanted to focus on her music and holed herself up in her music room. She didn’t… regret it exactly, but the nostalgia hit her with all the grace of a rampaging bull.

...It'd been a long time since she'd seen anything that reminded her of those days spent in the park and the fox girl's eyes were so very hard to look away from.

“Veela aren't permitted to attend Hogwarts regardless. And unable to use human magic as they are, a Hogwarts education would be completely ineffectual for them.” She paused for a moment, then, in a softer tone, she added, “Though... the sentiment is received and very much appreciated, Miss...?” Her head tilted expectantly, clearly waiting for a name.

Vilas?
Novalie tilted her head, her large eyes wide with curiosity as she gazed at the girl.
Who’s he?
Wouldn't people usually say 'God' or 'Heavens'? Maybe it was some kind of deity in the girl’s religion..

The girl then clarified that she wasn’t a Veela and went on to explain why there were none at Hogwarts in the first place.
Oh... Novalie realized she must have misunderstood. She recalled the brief moment she had skimmed through the book - had it mentioned that Veelas attended Hogwarts? Or was it Half-Veelas? Maybe even Quarter-Veelas? Her memory was as foggy as the potions mist swirling through the room.

“Though… the sentiment is received and very much appreciated, Miss…?”

Her words snapped Novalie back to reality. She quickly straightened up, her cheeks flushing slightly from being lost in thought.
There was something about the way this girl spoke - polished, like someone with a sharp mind. It reminded her of another friend she had met by the Great Lake not long ago. They had that same kind of eloquent speech, like someone from an important family.
Could this be tied to wealth? Novalie wondered. Was speaking like this something all rich people did?

She chuckled, “Miss?”
When has anyone ever called her that? Weren't they both children?

Smiling brightly, she added, “Just call me Nova. What’s your name?”

Evpraksiya offered a soft smile in return, her peach-tinted lips curving slightly as she nodded in acknowledgment. She was accustomed to using "вы" with strangers, and the absence of a formal pronoun in English felt unsettling- like she was being presumptuous in being too close to people. Adapting to the English use of "Miss" or "Mister," unusual as it might be, was her way of maintaining a sense of distance. Yet, as the newcomer to England, she supposed she was the one who should adjust its social norms as opposed to the other way around.

Although she certainly wouldn’t mind it that way.

“My name is Evpraksiya Vinogradova—well met, Nova.” The words flowed easily, practiced, and refined like the wine her family crafted. She mused briefly: was that all she was—honeyed words and a composed exterior? Would anyone remember her as anything more when she was gone? What a morbid thought to entertain.

Dark sacramento eyes, swept over their shared work table, noting the absence of the needed potion ingredients. The Slytherin stood up with poised grace and moved toward the worn wooden cabinet, waiting for Nova to join her. If the redhead followed, Evpraksiya would walk alongside her, gently probing with careful questions as she mentally rehearsed the list of ingredients needed for the herbicide potion.

Of course- she’d already read the textbook thoroughly and taken neat, precise notes during the lecture. But what if one day she needed to brew the potion without access to those resources? And if there was ever a test, she would perhaps need to recall both the ingredients and the techniques by heart so really, it was always better to overprepare than to find oneself lacking.

“Speaking of which,” Evpraksiya began, her tone inquisitive, “I hope you don’t mind me asking about your abilities? Metamorphmagi are quite rare and I’ve never had the chance to speak to one in person. Can you change your height? Does your mass shift, or do you remain the same weight?” Nova had seemed to alter her eye color, was it unconscious or did she put effort into it? Did that mean she could create new pigments or was she shifting around the ones she already had? Evpraksiya wondered if metamorphmagus were just masters of human transfiguration who hit the genetic lottery.

Novalie saw a slight smile tug at the corners of the other girl’s lips and in that very moment, she felt a warmth creep into her cheeks, turning them a soft shade of pink.

“Evpraksiya.”, she repeated, smiling as the elegant name rolled off her tongue, though she suddenly felt a bit embarrassed.
Why, she wasn’t sure. Usually, the redhead never took things too seriously, but for some reason, she found herself wanting to make a good impression on this girl.
Her name sounded so much more refined than anything Novalie had ever heard.

When Evpraksiya stood up, Novalie quickly stumbled from her chair to keep pace with her. She stayed close by the girl's side as they walked toward the wooden cabinet holding the potion ingredients. Novalie had no clue what they were supposed to be looking for - she hadn’t bothered to glance at the textbook or really listen to the Professor’s instructions. Her mind had been too busy racing with thoughts of all the potions she planned to brew.

As they walked, Novalie couldn’t help but notice how graceful Evpraksiya was.
Not just in speech and name, but even in the way she moved. It was as if she floated, like an angel gliding above the clouds.
How could someone look so much like they stepped out of a fantasy book?

To an outsider, Evpraksiya probably resembled a princess, while Novalie would have come across as her hyperactive golden retriever.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Evpraksiya spoke in a gentle tone, asking about her Metamorphmagus ability.
“Uhm-”, Novalie began, stumbling over her words, feeling a bit out of her depth compared to Evpraksiya’s eloquence, “I honestly don’t really know much myself.”
She let out a nervous laugh, immediately feeling more embarrassed.

Normally, it didn’t bother her that she couldn’t fully explain her ability, but in front of Evpraksiya, Novalie felt like she needed to be sharper, more impressive.

“Most of the time, my hair or eye color changes. It’s not really something I control... at least, not yet. But I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it soon!”, she added with a grin.
“I’ve even heard I could be able to turn into other people eventually! Isn’t that sick?”

As they reached the wooden cabinet, Novalie casually grabbed a few random, interesting-looking ingredients that had absolutely nothing to do with the Herbicide Potion.
She continued to chat with her usual bright smile, “Imagine if I could turn into a boy or a teacher! Oh, or maybe into you! I’d love that! I’d carry a mirror with me all the time, haha!”

Evpraksiya took notice of her Nova's hoard of the wrong ingredients and grimaced internally as all the ways those combined together could make everyone in the classroom into flesh spaghetti- or worse, stain their school uniforms passed through her mind. The Slytherin wordlessly passed over her neat notes to the little fox, as sharp sacramento eyes scanned the shelves for the required ingredients, delicately plucking them from their stationary places on the dusty shelf- goodness, when was the last time they'd been cleaned? How terribly negligent.

“That's understandable, if you ever require help in understanding your past, you're welcome to ask me.” Evpraksiya said softly, “Denying anyone their heritage feels rather cruel.”

She couldn't personally imagine what she'd be like without the Vinogradova name. Centuries of history behind her name hidden from her, and the youngest Vinogradova inadvertently being a disgrace to her lineage? It certainly wasn't a crime to be ignorant but to be willingly ignorant when one could be enlightened seemed a decision endlessly dim-witted.

Evpraksiya's brow furrowed with concern as Nova spoke. She mentioned eventually being able to shift into a different face as matured metaphorgmagus often do and that it was somehow... ill? That was... an odd way to phrase her physical ailments but maybe it was an English turn of phrase she didn't understand yet. It sounded like a positive thing on Nova's tongue, however Evpraksiya made a mental note to research that phrase later. It'd be unbecoming of her to be seen lacking in the linguistics department.

Idly, Evpraksiya noted her own growing fondess of Nova. The girl was expressed her emotions carefreely and without reservation- that was rather rare in her own life and even more rare to find someone who was exuberant like her but not annoying. In the back of her mind, the blonde wondered if this was what having a younger sister felt like but quickly dismissed that notion. No, Evpraksiya was certain that she drove her own siblings to the brink of madness and she certainly wasn't driven to madness by the little fox.

If she squinted, she could almost see a tail swishing behind the Gryffindor in self-satisfaction.

“A mirror would be almost certainly excessive in this case.” An inelegant giggle pushed it's way out. she smiled usually in public yes, but nothing beyond a polite laugh was allowed to leave her mouth in the presence of others. This was... new. “Especially when you, yourself would have anyone thinking they're guilty of vanity.”

As Novalie eagerly packed herself with nearly every ingredient she could grab, she noticed Evpraksiya handing her some neatly written notes.
Even her handwriting-

Glancing over the neatly written notes, the Ravenclaw compared them to the random assortment of ingredients she had piled into her hands. She quickly realized that most of what she’d collected didn’t seem to match what was actually needed. Or did they..?
Many of the ingredients weren’t labeled or at least none that Novalie could easily identify. Still, she decided to hold on to her random finds - just to make sure! - better leaving it to Evpraksiya to gather whatever they truly needed for the potion.

When her newfound friend offered to help her understand more about her past, Novalie tilted her head, her brow slightly furrowing in confusion.
What did she mean by that?
Novalie hadn’t learned much about her Metamorphmagus ability yet and she had no idea it could be linked to her family history. In her mind, she was from a complete Muggle-family - no magic, no mysterious ancestry.

What was there to understand about her past?

Still, curiosity got the better of her and then it hit her!
Maybe Evpraksiya was, like, one of those fortune tellers Novalie had seen at the funfair, the ones who could peer into your future! Or even your past lives!
The redhead's eyes lit up with excitement at the thought. What if Evpraksiya could reveal who she had been in a past life? Novalie was sure she must’ve been something cool - like a raccoon!

“Yes! Tell me everything about me!”, Novalie accepted with a wide grin, thrilled by the idea.
She was ready to eagerly follow the other girl back to their seats after grabbing a mix of needed and not so needed ingredients.

As the Slytherin let out a soft giggle, Novalie’s heart skipped a beat.
In that instant, her Metamorphmagus ability kicked in and the tips of her long red hair shifted to a delicate pink.
She barely noticed the change as she blurted out without hesitation, “How are you so perfect?”
Novalie quickly added, “I mean.. are you sure you're not, like, a Veela by accident? Or do you use a spell on yourself?”

Her questions were driven by nothing but pure, honest curiosity. Novalie wasn’t shy about her fascination - she genuinely wanted to know everything there was to know about this girl who seemed so flawless.

Returning back to the table, Evpraksiya placed her ingredients down onto the workstation, neatly organizing them in order of the steps they had to be placed in their cauldron in, just as she saw Nadezhda do. Long lashes fluttered as she looked towards Nova's ingredients and picked out the ones that would be required in this process, leaving the rest there for Nova... to do whatever with. The redhead was eleven, she had plans for them Evpraksiya was sure, although. She'd prefer the girl conduct her plans far away from their potion.

Evpraksiya's smile turned puzzled as she explained what she meant. "We'd need some more details first of course, any missing relatives in your family tree to narrow it down, your mother's maiden last name could help I suppose- and a few drops of your blood I believe. St. Mungo's runs genetic tests that can then use your blood to determine your ancestry." She paused in beginning the first step of the potions process in consideration.

People... People could be squeamish about blood being used in magic, the Slytherin knew, but through framing it from a solely scientific standpoint surely it made logical sense? Your blood was an accumulation of all the ones before you. Furthermore, St. Mungo's wouldn't conduct any dark rituals. They were far too well-respected to consider losing that status in the eyes of the greater society at large, Evpraksiya decided.

While Novalie might not have noticed the change in hair color Evpraksiya certainly did, eyes flicking over to the blush-tinted ends and back to meet the girl's dark green ones. Colors had significance to metamorphoses, didn't they? She idly wondered what the pink meant on Nova and made a mental note to search it up in the Hogwarts library. Perhaps the school would have more information on

"To my knowledge, there is no spell to turn oneself into a veela, and as for perfection... Certain families simply demand more than others I suppose. The results speak for themself though, no?" Different families ask different things. Her just happened to need better from their members than most. Who would she even be without her family's influence? Would she perhaps be loud and endearing as Nova? Or would she still be composed? Tatiana was bold and crass but she was raised in the same family as Evpraksiya had been. But in the same vein, her sister had learned how to insult with backhanded compliments instead of brash words. So perhaps nurture only honed what nature gave?

Maybe she could be a whole and complete person without needing others.

(Maybe in another life, she'd be someone who'd be able to understand these things)
