If only his grandfather was around to hear of this.

Big. No, bigger than just big. The hall was—it was... the hall was super big. Aodhan was not sure if he'd ever walked into a room as impressive as this one, with its floating candles and living paintings. Living paintings. He was sure the only other place he encountered such a phenomenon was in his dreams, or perhaps in the cartoons he watched before leaving for school. He created a mental note to approach them before the night could end. After all, it was possible they could teach him just a little bit more about his new environment.

The boy's head turned back and forth, almost restlessly, as he was eventually situated within the mass of first years. Honestly, there was so much capturing his miniscule attention span that the speech went through one of his ears and quickly out the other. Or maybe that was an exaggeration; he was able to capture a few key details here and there. Especially when the talking hat made its appearance. A talking hat! Was everything here sentient? Would he find humanoid animals next?

A face-splitting grin was evident on his face, and once the hat's song echoed throughout the room, his body was swaying back and forth as well. He didn't stop moving after it finished, either; Aodhan simply began humming a tune of his own as the children were called down one by one. (If he received stares with varying levels of annoyance, well, he was none the wiser.)

"AODHAN SHAW."

There it was. Showtime.

With anticipation tickling his insides, the youth skipped his way over to the designated seat and plopped himself down. Somehow, his smile grew even more in size as the hat was placed on his head. Surely it would have interesting things to share if it could produce its own song.

"Ah, an inquisitive one, aren't you? Yes... here is a colorful mind with a strong desire to uncover more of the world. Perhaps some of this could be attributed to your muggle upbringing, hm? Yet this curiosity is not in the same vein as a Ravenclaw, no."

Ignoring the possibility of it being rhetorical, Aodhan shrugged his shoulders. He still wasn't entirely sure what a muggle was, although it'd been explained to his family. He may or may not have been distracted.

"You have quite the rebellious streak as well. Not prone to staying in one place... and you struggle greatly with slowing down. I must say, you are rather daring to forgo the wisdom of others. Or is it sheer recklessness? Consider this food for thought, child."

He didn't even pretend to stop his eyes from rolling. He lost count just how many times he'd been told the same while getting lectured.

"Hm, I know of a place to welcome you, yes. Lest this become a chore, I'll put you in...

GRYFFINDOR!"

It was actual TORTURE having to watch all her other first years get sorted into their different houses. Aria's nails were starting to bleed because of how much she had been biting them. WHY did her name have to start with 'W'! Aria's stomach sank even deeper every time a house was called. She wanted, no, NEEDED to be Ravenclaw! Aria was paying full attention to the front of the room, but her stomach still exploded when she heard:

Wright, Aria!

Aria was very careful in every step she took. She didn't want to fall over or something! Once Aria reached the front of the Great Hall and sat on the stool, the only thing that she could think about is how she NEEDED to be Ravenclaw. To make her family proud, but most importantly, her father who was probably watching her from above right now.

This is for you dad.

Ah yes, Nicholas Wright.

Aria had almost forgotten that the sorting hat could listen to her thoughts.

Time to make him proud young girl. I think I'll put you in...

Aria held her breath and felt her chest tighten...

RAVENCLAW!

Finally, FINALLY, Aria could breathe again. She felt like screaming and crying and throwing up all at once. Aria felt like she was walking on rainbows to her seat at the Ravenclaw table.

As Nyx Flowers followed other students, she walked through a massive door into the Great Hall. She looked around, left and right, up and down, her eyes widened with amazement and curiosity. Each table represents each house - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Of course she knows about it, her parents have graduated from here, and they usually tell her about their life stories - mostly about Hogwarts. Students crowded both sides of each long dining table, looking at the new first-year students who just walked in and were about to get sorted into one of their houses. They were all laughing among their friends and talking about their activities during school break. Nyx glanced on the tables and saw a big feast laid out on each table. Her stomach rumbled as she spotted loads of her favourite dishes, not sure if she was hungry, nervous, or excited, maybe all of it.

As she looked up, her brown eyes met with a lot of lighted candles floating and the ceiling mimicking the sky outside. She knew about it, from what her parents described, it’s a lot more gorgeous than what she ever imagined or dreamed of, but she also read it from the ‘Hogwarts, A History’ book that she bought from Flourish and Blotts, in Diagon Alley. As expected, she read the books right after she returned home from Diagon Alley and almost finished every book she bought because she was very excited about her upcoming journey at Hogwarts and very keen to learn everything beforehand.

Nyx finally lowered her gaze after staring at the ceiling for quite a long time. She couldn’t see well from her spot due to her height being a little below average. Eventually, the students stopped walking and gathered at the front. Nyx tiptoed to see what was in front of her, a wizard introducing himself. Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Nyx was very excited and nervous at the same time as she listened to the headmaster's speech. Suddenly, she turned her head to a speaking hat, which appeared to be the sorting hat that would put her in one of the houses. Nyx started to get lost in her thoughts about the houses, she didn’t have any preference for the house she would be in. She believes that she will be put in the house she belongs to.

Her attention was back as the sorting hat started singing. She enjoyed the song and applauded once the song ended. The headmaster started to read the names from the list one by one and each of them got sorted by the sorting hat. All of them look relieved after the sorting hat called out their house's name. On the other hand, Nyx waited patiently for her name to be called. After what felt like hours to her, ‘Flowers, Nyx Flowers’ her name has been called.

She stepped forward nervously and sat on the stool. The sorting hat had been placed on her head, she closed her eyes and the sorting hat started speaking. “Hmm.. clever, you will be a great fit for Ravenclaw. Also ambitious, I see… How about Slytherin? Loyalty and hard-working. Where should I put you in… hmm…”. She listened carefully to the sorting hat and whispered “The one that I meant to be in please”. The sorting hat then shouted out “Then that better be... HUFFLEPUFF!. Nyx opened her eyes and jumped up with relief washing through her whole body. She walked over to the Hufflepuff table and smiled at other Hufflepuff students as she sat with them.

Nyx's gaze went back to the students who were still waiting to get sorted and watch the sorting ceremony til the end. After everyone got sorted to their houses, the feast began and they all ate hungrily. She chose a little of everything so that she would be able to taste everything in front of her. Her eyes widened in surprise at everything she tasted and she enjoyed it very much. This day will be one of her best memory forever and she felt delighted and glad about it.

When in doubt, go to the library.

Astrid had hardly known what to expect at Hogwarts, and what she did know was from skimming through Hogwarts, A History. It gave a lot of detailed information on the school's history and locales, but that tell her much about what it would be like to be at Hogwarts.

Astrid's parents had told her many stories of their own time in Durmstrang, and Astrid could already see noticeable differences at Hogwarts compared to what her parents had described of their own education. It was almost certainly warmer here. With so many candles lit about in the Great Hall, of course it would be warmer. And it was significantly less dark and gloomy than Astrid imagined Durmstrang to be. Maybe Hogwarts wouldn't be so bad, after all.

Her name was called, the simplified version, not the full, outdated version, and she approached the stool with the enchanted hat. She glanced to the Headmaster when she stepped closer to the stool, mostly out of curiosity, before sitting down and waiting patiently.

She'd read about the houses of Hogwarts, and given her own recklessness, she assumed she'd be placed in Gryffindor. Or, if her family's reputation preceded her, perhaps even Slytherin. She didn't know if her family had passed down a single bone fit for Hufflepuff, and she didn't feel very suited for...
"...Ravenclaw!"
The hat's voice cut through her thoughts before she could even finish musing about the houses. That was a lot faster than she'd expected: seconds at most. Astrid wanted to stay in the stool, to question the hat, but glancing between the Headmaster already reading names from the list and the other students waiting their turns steered Astrid away from that decision.

She stood, feeling almost indignant, and strode to the Ravenclaw table with a sigh.

The Great Hall - Sorted at Last. 514 words.

Nobody could have prepared Lily-Rose for the Great Hall.

No amount of recounting from her mother could capture the grandeur of it all. The only word that came to mind as she stepped into the room full of students and professors was one she had never used before—sublime.

Streaming behind a few first years who lead the line, Lily-Rose looked at the enchanted ceiling above. Her mother had told her the ceiling was bewitched to reflect the weather outside, and she wasn't wrong: it seemed the clear skies could swallow the room at any given moment. It was just as magical as the candles that floated right over everyone's head.

At the end of the Hall, Lily spotted a hat sitting on top of a crooked stool. It looked old and rugged like it should have been replaced decades earlier, but Lily knew better. She knew that once she sat on that lonely stool, the Sorting Hat would be an archnemesis, one that could see and hear everything that went through her head. There was nothing and nowhere to hide. In the end, she also knew she could trust it to sort her into the right house.

Don't worry Lils. Her mother had said the night before. The Sorting Hat knows you better than you do. Wherever you go, you will do just fine. There was no pressure and not an ounce of doubt in her mother's voice at the time.

Albeit wanting to be a Gryffindor just like her, Lily-Rose knew she would be happy with any house. Her grandmother was a Slytherin and her grandfather a Hufflepuff. They were all people she admired deeply.

"Lily-Rose Fournier." Her name was finally called.

She heaved a sigh to relax her nerves before stepping up on the platform. The hat was placed on her head and she waited. And waited. And waited a long time before she heard an old raspy voice. Was the hat taking its sweet time?

"Ambitious I see. Extremely loyal. Competitive and courageous. This might be more difficult than anticipated." The hat spoke.

Lily closed her eyes as the Sorting Hat continued to debate with himself, unsure of the house she should be a part of.

After what seemed like an eternity sitting on the stool (a little over four minutes, she would later learn), the Hat seemed to wake up from his slumber.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Lily-Rose jumped out of her seat, almost running away with the hat still on her head. Almost. It's with a bit of shame, but a lot of excitement that she took a few steps back under the cheers from the Gryffindor table and lowered her head for the professor to take the hat off it.

She finally made her way to the table to sit with the people she might as well call family for the next seven years.

She couldn't wait to tell her mother via owl.

Despite hearing of her brother's stories of the magical school, nothing could have prepared Annaliese for the awe that came over her as she stepped into the Great Hall, making her way to the front of the room with the other first years. She did her best to take it all in at once, everything from the floating candles and large portraits decorated the enormous room to the four long tables filled with older students, each decorated in its respected House colors. The ceiling especially caught her eye, enchanted to imitate the night sky, stars twinkling against a deep blue background.

Reminding herself of her mother's lectures to keep up appearances, Annaliese straightened up and quickly redirected her focus to the man in armor currently marching his way towards the group of first-years. He had greeted them as they entered, assumably the headmaster, though Annaliese was thrown off by the armor he was wearing.

As the man silenced the previously loud Hall before introducing himself as Solomon Lear, Annaliese looked around the tables for her older brother, Emery, spotting him with his friends at the Slytherin table. He caught her eye, giving her an encouraging smile and motioning to the empty seat next to him that he appeared to have saved for her. Annaliese grinned, excited to be joining her brother for school at last, after two lonely years of suffering with their childhood tutors alone.

Singing brought Annaliese's attention back to the headmaster, more specifically to the hat from where the song was coming from. Annaliese wrinkled her nose in disdain, surely that raggedy old thing wasn't the infamous Sorting Hat. She imagined it to be well-taken care of, not in tatters. There was no way she'd let that thing touch her head, she'd surely get lice.

Much to her disappointment, the singing pile of rags appeared to indeed be the Sorting Hat as students began to be called up to be sorted. Annaliese groaned inwardly, knowing it wouldn't be long before she was called, as C fell near the beginning of the alphabet. Before long, her own name was announced and she made her way to the stool, her head held high and proud as the hat was placed upon her head.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here? Another Callaway? Brilliant! You lot are always fun to pick through." The hat said in her ear.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Annaliese shot back, her nerves turning into irritation as she quickly came to the defense of her family.

"Ah, a fiery one, aren't we? Where to put you..." The hat drawled, dragging out its decision.

"With my brother." Annaliese stated simply, as if it was the easiest answer ever. The hat's stalling caused her nerves to flare up, not that she'd ever let it show. The only sign of her racing heart was the drumming of her fingers on her leg. She risked a glance over at Emery, who was watching with the same amount of anticipation.

"Yes, yes, with your ambition and pride, you would do well there. However I wonder... perhaps you'd do even better somewhere else. Ah yes, I see now, with your determination and nerve... GRYFFINDOR!!"

Annaliese felt her heart stop as the words rang out over the Hall, the table decked out in red and gold erupting into cheers. This wasn't supposed to happen, it wasn't supposed to go like this. She should be joining her brother in Slytherin, like she grew up imagining, in the same House as nearly every family member for generations. She was not supposed to be in Gryffindor.

Swallowing the lump in her throat, Annaliese plastered a tight smile on her face as she walked over to her new House, her steps confident, betraying nothing. She risked a glance over at her brother, who looked just as confused and disappointed as she felt. She mentally made note to find him later.

The Gryffindor table welcomed Annaliese, clapping her on the back or congratulating her as she found an open seat and sat down. Unwilling to let them see any displeasure she felt at the hat's decision, Annaliese kept a smile on her face as she did her best to enjoy the rest of the feast, her mood now soured considerably.

Fearghal kept his eyes straight ahead as the group of first years entered the Great Hall. He wasn’t too impressed by the grandeur of the room, but even things like the floating candles that he was slightly impressed by, he tried not to look all that awestruck. He was used to living in a grand estate. Of course, his childhood home was no castle, but it had caused him to grow accustomed to a certain lifestyle: a lifestyle that seemingly would be matched here at Hogwarts.

He frowned as he was pushed around gently by the shuffling herd of students all around him. An orderly line would have been far preferable. Then, no one would be touching him. His fists clenched at the thought of all the regular-people germs that were probably getting on his clothes. At least he’d be getting house-specific clothing soon. Maybe he could just toss this robe aside and wear the others the rest of the time. Though those were likely to be contaminated by others as well.

As the names ahead of him were called, Fearghal didn’t particularly pay attention. It didn’t matter what houses they were sorted into. All that mattered was his house.

“Akehurst, Fearghal.” He snapped back to attention as his name was called, and he confidently put his arms forward to part the crowd he was in so he could make his way up to the Sorting Hat.

He took a seat on the stool, his posture upright and proper and his hands folded neatly in his lap. Without meaning to, as the hat was placed over his head and fell down to cover his eyes, Fearghal took a deep breath and held it.

“Interesting…very interesting…You’re a smart one, I can see. Yes…but proud. Oh, so proud…”

Though he tried to contain his fear, Fearghal’s heart beat so fast that he worried others would be able to see the pounding in his chest. He was doing his best to stay cool and confident–that’s what his parents would have wanted–but deep down, he was very scared by all of this. Not only was this his first extended time away from his parents, but this was the beginning of his educational journey. His arrival at Hogwarts marked the beginning of the rest of his life. Here, he would determine his career and would make his parents proud, continuing to elevate the Akehurst name.

“I see fear in you, but I also see the ability to overcome it. To thrive her. Hm…I think I know where you belong–Gryffindor!

Fearghal could hear the cheers and applause before he could see any of it. But as the Sorting Hat was removed from his head, he could see one long line of tables in particular that was celebrating his sorting. A smile spread across his face. He’d given a lot of thought in the past to which house he would be sorted into, but had never been sure of where he would land. Now that it was settled though, and with cheers echoing in his ears, this felt like the perfect fit, even if he didn’t have full confidence in the hat’s assessment of who he was.

Fearghal hopped off the stool and hastily walked to the Gryffindor table, taking a seat and preparing to watch the rest of the sorting ceremony, though just as he’d been unable to pay attention before, so he felt now. There was too much excitement and energy buzzing around in his mind. And even the fear and anticipation from just moments before was beginning to be fade and being replaced with excitement at the year ahead.

It's only arrogance if you're wrong

Hogwarts - Great Hall.

Coriolanus' large brown eyes shone brightly in wonder as the starry sky opened over his head beneath the ceiling of the Great Hall. He had heard about this place countless times before, but nothing compared—even minimally—to the feeling of being there in person. Thick clouds floated beneath the crowd, and a thin layer of fog at the peak of the high walls dissipated as all tables were filled by the other students in their robes. Seeing all that unbelievable amount of food, the honorable little hurried with his short steps and sat down in the first empty space he could find along one of the four long tables arranged over the hall and, without ceremony began to fill his plate. He was hungry, and the delicious smell of roast chicken filled his nose in a way that made his steps seem to be guided by it. Many children his age chattered loudly and smiled. Corius, small, leaned toward the table so that he could see the professors sitting in front of the huge window. He could hardly think of describing the feeling of knowing that in a few hours he would be taking classes with the best wizards a boy like him could even dream of. It wouldn't be like having to endure the same Grandma Beatrice's etiquette lessons, or Jacob's long sessions bragging about Quidditch lessons. Now he would finally learn something useful. And for a change, he would be in control of his own choices - at least until he had to return home again.

The noise suddenly dissipated abruptly and everyone craned their necks towards the place where the teachers were. Corius almost choked on his food when he caught sight of a tall, bearded man, wearing strangely curious armor, and walked imposingly to the podium. An armor? wait a minute, he had heard about it, that was the director Jacob was talking about. The man managed to focus everyone's attention on himself without any effort, it seemed to be something natural. His face was quite pale and his dark gaze carried a strange mixture of gentleness and mystery, although somehow the way he carried himself conveyed a strange sense of comfort and security. Using the amplifying spell, he announced the start of the sorting ceremony.

One of the teachers held up a pointed hat. The little one knew exactly what he was talking about. He always asked Mother Clair to tell him about the talking hat when he lived in Dover. It was one of his favorite stories: The day his parents discovered their homes. Other students began chattering excitedly about it! most of them hoped to be sorted into Gryffindor. There were those who were divided between those who repudiated Slytherin and those who were proud of it. But Coriuolanus had no idea where to expect to be selected. Batrice had told him several times over the past four years: Not Hufflepuff, Coriolanus! To be honest, Coriolanus was very fond of this possibility. As he chewed and watched the other children his age being called up to the stool, he tried to imagine what his grandmother's face would be if he were selected for the Hufflepuff. However, he decided that it was better not to attract misfortune with his thoughts, and he watched again while he gorged himself.

One by one, children like him filled the tables of their respective homes. It didn't take long for his name to be pronounced like a bang going up through the windows. Corius gasped on his cheeks full of chicken and puree. "MR. CORIOLANUS ANDREW JOSTEN MINYARD." He wiped his mouth with a napkin and stood up shyly while still finishing chewing. During the short course he felt his legs almost weaken when he realized that everyone was looking at him. Did this happen to everyone? He just hadn't noticed it before?

He sat down on the stool and fixed the little shoes on the floor as he leaned briefly when the hat had been placed on his head. The hat hung to one side, it was relatively larger than his head and contrary to what he expected, it didn't smell of old leather or mold. It didn't actually smell like anything. The little one brought his knees together and twisted his mouth as he waited torturously for the pointy hat to say something. But instead, he began to murmur indecipherable sounds as he slowly hung the tip to one side and then the other.

HMMMMM SO LET'S SEE...
YOU SEEM TO ME TO BE SOMEONE QUITE CURIOUS...

The hat thinly opened its mouth, or rather, what seemed to be a mouth. Corius whispered in a way that only the hat could hear.

"Mr. Hat... I know you should always hear this kind of stuff but... Please don't put me in the Hufflepuff... I know it may seem like I'd love to plot this just to tease Grandma Beatrice but... Know... Thinking better now... maybe it's better not to play with luck... And you know, I can't imagine myself in the middle of all those evil faces in Slytherin. Grandma is a Slytherin and I'm not at all like her, except for my eyes... e..."

FOR GOD'S SAKE, SHUT UP! IT'S NOT LETTING ME THINK STRAIGHT.
The hat whispered back to the little one beneath him.

"ok..ok.." Corius said disappointed, his cheeks red puffed up.

COF COF ... SO, AS I SAID...
COURAGE AND DISCIPLINE SEEM TO BE INGRAINED IN YOUR BLOOD, ALTHOUGH YOU FOR SOME REASON BELIEVE YOU ARE LOST IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL. HMmm!

And then the tip leaned the other way again. Corius's head wandered through the somewhat blurry memories within him. The day he accidentally levitated a rabid dog without using his hands. But he was pulled back to reality by the words of the hat.

WELL, IT SEEMS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR GREAT DISCOVERIES. HIS HEART HAS BEEN MOVED BY THE DOUBTS HE HOLDS WITHIN HIMSELF, IT IS WHERE HIS DETERMINATION COMES FROM...

For a moment, he thought he saw his mother reading to him in her room on the third floor. The happy and simplest times of his life in Dover, where he could run and explore at will and had a real family. He suppressed the melancholy feeling within him and shook his head.

HEY! WATCH OUT, BOY!

The hat complained grumpy.

Corius smiled shyly.
- Sorry. He hissed.

SO THAT'S IT!
RAVENCLAW!

Coriolanus let out a broad smile and celebrated inwardly. It wasn't like being in Gryffindor where she could have the company of her cousin Jacob all the time. But maybe that was the question, maybe it was time for him to learn to survive without depending on anyone. Besides, Ravenclaw was Mom's home and had been the home of many other talented Minyard's before him. Most of her ancestors were Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, with very rare exceptions such as Grandma Beatrice. The hat was removed from his head and for a second he thought he saw the hat wink gently at him as if to say Welcome... Corius arose and sat down contentedly and relieved at the Ravenclaw table.

Lisa Macailin was one of those students who didn’t care very much about her sorting. Or rather, she trusted her parents, who had told her the Sorting Hat would make the right choice, and whatever it decided—she would take it in stride. She suspected it would be either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, the houses of her mother and father respectively, and secretly wished for the latter. Hufflepuff sounded like a house that would accept her without any prerequisites, just the way she was. Would other Gryffindors push her away if they found her not daring enough? Would her place within the house depend on how strongly she represented its traits? Those were perhaps silly things to worry about, but Lisa was, after all, only an eleven-year-old girl. At least it kept her mind off the stares she received along with the other first years, which she found a bit unnerving.

The two girls and one boy who had come with her on the train were sorted before her name was called—Ravenclaw, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Lisa wasn’t particularly studious, so she didn’t see herself trying to keep up with the eagle house students, but seeing a familiar face getting sorted into Hufflepuff made her hope for a similar outcome. They got on fairly well; wouldn’t that mean they were similar in some way? Daddy told her the Hufflepuff common room was cozy and closest to the kitchens. Her ma argued that its proximity to the Slytherin common room was a downside. But Lisa wasn’t planning on fighting with anyone at Hogwarts, was she? Certainly not just because of school houses—that seemed like a silly reason. She hoped to get along with everyone. She was well-liked in her home village... surely, this couldn’t be much different?

When her name was called, Lisa walked toward the stool without fear, though her heart skipped a beat when she sat and faced the entire hall of students staring right at her. Thankfully, she didn’t have to say anything—but the Sorting Hat had a few things to say to her.

“Hmm... You think Hufflepuff is the safest choice, do you? Yes, I see you value acceptance and a sense of belonging, but you’ve underestimated yourself. Gryffindor doesn’t just seek those who are bold—it seeks those who will rise to meet challenges, no matter how daunting. Yes... I see your courage, even if you don’t yet.”

"GRYFFINDOR!"

All doubt vanished from Lisa’s mind when she heard the cheers from her new house table. She was a Gryffindor, like her ma! Getting up from the stool, she skipped toward her new housemates with a huge smile on her face, though feeling slightly dazed. Thankfully, she didn’t have a long way to walk!

Sorting Ceremony 2024-2025
A boy, wide and starry eyed, gasped as he was led into the Great Hall. A tall man, by the name of Solomon Lear, he would soon learn later, had greeted them all- his figure imposing and tall. He craned his head to look at the man, before not bothering to greet him, blindly following behind the rest of the first years, not noticing when they stopped, too busy trying to get away from the scary tall man. He turned, suddenly, staring at all the beautiful decorations adorned with bright lights. Elio was briefly enchanted by the dozens of dozens of floating candles before he let his eyes wander up to the brightly lit starry sky above them, and his eyes widened impossibly larger.

The ceiling was enchanted to make it look as if they were outside, showered in the gorgeous night sky, filled with galaxies, and all hues, of dark purples, blues, and greens. It made it look as if the great hall was open to the heavens. Elio was told by his parents that the ceiling was enchanted to always match the weather outside, no matter it be sunny, cloudy, or anything else. He had found it hard to believe at first, but now that he was seeing it in person, he stared open mouthed at the vast expanse of twinkling stars encompassing them, wondering how the mechanics of it all worked, and if it had been a spell that had allowed the ceiling to look like that and how difficult of a spell it was.

The hall itself was lined with long wooden tables corresponding to each house. Yellow and black to Hufflepuff, Red and gold to Gryffindor, Blue and bronze for Ravenclaw, and green and silver for Slytherin. Swarms of students gathered around in the tables, chuckling to each other and laughing, but as soon as the first years came in, Elio noticed that all the higher year students were staring at the first years, smirking in amusement at the expressions on the faces that they were obviously making. Elio suddenly felt nervous. What if he got sorted into the wrong house? Could he be sorted into a wrong house? What if the hat was wrong about its choice? His doubts only grew more apparent as his eyes landed on a raggedy old hat. It looked worn out and seemed like an oversized wizards’ hat. ‘Was that the thing that was gonna determine where he would be for the next 7 years of his life?’ Elio thought disdainfully.

His thought’s were startled into silence, as suddenly he saw the tall (scary!) man from before stride up, before stopping and booming out a greeting.

“Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient." Elio narrowed his eyes at the hat, as if expecting it to suddenly rise up and talk- which it did in the next few moments for the most part.

The hat spoke, and then sang its song of the year, singing of the great houses of Hogwarts, and then what honor each house would bring. Elio had heard of the Sorting Hat from his parents, but never in his life did he expect such a shabby looking hat to be able to talk, and sing. He shook his head and stilled, as Solomon, (the headmaster, as he would now learn from other first years) started chanting out names.

Elio had thought about what house he would be in, his parents had told him all about it! Perhaps, Slytherin? He knew that Slytherin was a house of many great things, of honor, and of ambition. Ambition, that’s what Elio had. He had plenty of that, and he wondered how the Slytherin common room would look like once he got sorted in.

“Vallas, Elio!

It had been a pretty long time before Elio was called, but the excitement, nervous energy, and anticipation never really went away, building to a peak, as he shakily stood up, almost tripping over himself to scurry over to where the hat was. He looked apprehensively at it, as if daring it to speak again before reluctantly settling down onto the chair. He felt every single eye in the room turn to him, and he was glad that he was unable to see the curious gazes of other students on him as the deputy headmistress placed the raggedy old hat on his head.

“Ah, questioning my abilities, now are you?” The hat spoke in Elio’s mind, causing him to squeeze his eyes shut tighter. He couldn’t tell how much of his mind the hat was reading and probing through, and it made him feel a little sick. No, Elio thought. “No matter,” The hat continued, “I see you have much ambition and a thirst for power, you could be good in Slytherin.” The hat finished, silent for a heartbeat before continuing, “Though I see an intelligent mind in you yet, your thirst for knowledge could also benefit you in Ravenclaw, what do you think?”

Ravenclaw? Elio frowned. He hadn’t thought that he might end up in that house, but maybe? What about Slytherin? He asked silently, shifting uncomfortably. ”Yes yes, you might be good in Slytherin, but I believe that Ravenclaw could serve you much better than Slytherin. You have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, which might not be bad for Slytherin, however more so, it is not the thirst for knowledge for yourself, but rather for the pure pursuit of knowledge.” Elio shifted again, pausing before responding, Are you sure? “Yes, I do believe so,” The hat said in its kindly voice. Elio sighed inwardly, but nodded, Put me where you believe I belong.

The hat paused before responding. If the hat could’ve had a face, it definitely would have been twisted into a grin. “Alright then, although Slytherin would have been my second choice for you, the house which you are best suited for is, RAVENCLAW!” The last word was yelled out loud, startling Elio, before the hat was promptly wrenched out of his dark view, showering his sight in color once again. He looked briefly at Solomon, who nodded at him gently towards the Ravenclaw table, which was erupt in shouts and cheers, unfamiliar faces greeting him as he numbly headed towards the table, wondering whether the decision had been correct or not.

“I’ll love you till I’m dead.” (find me on @mossykitti! i do art)
