Emily was independent in a lot of things; she was an only child, she worked by herself with independent study much of the time and never had pets at home. Well, that last one was about to change. After careful consideration on "Auntie's" part and conversing with the Shephards on the matter, she decided to bequeath her young ward with an early birthday present, one which she could take with her for her returning year at Hogwarts. A pet. With Emily's knack for getting along with people and animals alike, she couldn't see the harm in trusting her with a companion of her own to keep her company while she was away from home.

Of course upon being given the news that Emily could finally have a critter of her choosing running about the house without her parents putting up a fuss, Emily cleared everything she had planned for the weekend and dragged "Auntie" eagerly to Diagon Alley, her excitement barely containable as they travelled to London for the day trip ahead. Emily may have wanted a pet, but she never said where she was going to get it, and neither did "Auntie." Mostly because "Auntie" could already guess where she wanted to get one for Hogwarts sake.

Walking into Magical Menagerie, Emily had her eyes glued to the animals inside. Sounds of chirps and chews and croaks bounced off the walls. The variety to choose from was immense. Her eyes were darting between cats and toads, lizards and pygmy puffs, unsure of what to go for. If she could have one of everything she would. Alas, the galleons in her pocket weren't quite enough for that.

She looked at the owls. They were all beautiful and elegant. A high-pitched chirp caught Emily's attention, her gaze casting downwards towards a small brown and red owl with big wide eyes.

"Aww...!" Emily got down on her knees to meet its level. It was so small it could probably fit in her hands. It must still be pretty young too. Its fluffy body looked so soft to touch. And the way its talons padded along the floor beneath it was so adorable. It really was like looking at a ball of fluff on legs!

Emily looked back at "Auntie," who had an eyebrow raised and a satisfactory smirk on her lips. She read her mind and Emily beamed ecstatically; this owl was perfect for Emily. She got off her legs and went over to the store owner.

"Pardon me, but could I take that owl over there?
