How the Forbidden Forest Got It's Name

I stumbled into the forest, clutching my lantern tightly as I ventured even further into the menacing woods. I lifted the bright lantern near a looming tree to inspect it. I stumbled backwards, disbelief surely evident on my face. I rubbed my eyes. I was sure my eyes were playing tricks on me. Just now, for a moment, I had seen a face etched into the rough bark of the tree. No, surely the woods were just psychologically traumatic. There couldn't be anything actually dangerous inside...could it?

I gripped my lantern with my right hand and swung it away from the branches of the tree. I had to go deeper. I had to confirm whether my suspicious were true or not. Rumours of a werewolf living inside had been unsettling enough. What would happen if the werewolf came out to attack me? No, my friends must have been playing a prank on me. Werewolves definitely did not live in the forest.

No! It is here! argued my mind. I shook my head, trying to get the voices out. I walked for a while, occasionally hearing the crinkle of grass. Finally, when I heard it for the ninth time, I spun towards the sound. I cautiously stepped forward, hoping it was just a critter that had made the sound. My leather boots' thuds were muffled by the grassy floor. How convenient.

Crinkle. I turned towards where the sound had come from. Is it the werewolf? Is it? shouted my mind, pounding my head with unnecessary headaches. I shut the voice out and approached the sound. Movement in the shadows. I blinked. Surely I had imagined it. No, the movement came again.

Crinkle. Whatever was in the shadows...it had been following me. I switched the lantern into my other hand, so I could retrieve my wand from my right pocket. I slipped my hand inside, grasped the familiar English oak wood and took it out. While adjusting my fingers into the correct position, I spotted movement in the shadows. It had been so fast, I almost hadn't noticed it.

The lantern flickered, increasing the level of creepiness. It sputtered out. I mentally muttered a curse. "Lumos," I muttered and my wand glowed with light. I headed towards the shadows, keeping my wand close in case the creature decided to break it. Nothing. The shadows were empty. They were just shadows.

Or are they? whispered my mind unhelpfully. I closed my eyes, steadying myself. Whatever came out, I could face it. I had learned several new spells over the past week, and although they might not help in this kind of situation, the number of spells I knew certainly reassured me.

A low growl filled the air. Before I could register what was happening, the creature leaped at me. I do not deny it, I screamed. A loud piercing scream. My lantern dropped out of my hand and rolled away. The scream seemed to unbalance the creature. I breathed heavily as I ran to where I thought was where I had come from. Curse it. I knew I shouldn't have come alone.

The creature howled behind me. The werewolf! thought my mind. I twisted around just as it sauntered in, a little too confident for my liking. "Incendio," I breathed, doing the practised wand movement. A small burst of flames shot at the werewolf, barely heating it.

"Incendio Duo!" I shouted louder as the werewolf turned towards me, it's eyes blood red. Flames shot towards its head. "Incendio Tria!" A large burst of flames shot from my wand, and I felt my energy deplete.

The werewolf howled in pain. It was burnt badly. A patch of brown-black fur in the otherwise dark grey fur. The werewolf bared its teeth menacingly. I felt my adrenaline pumping through my veins as the werewolf pounced. Time seemed to slow down. Drop and roll. I reminded myself. I dropped and rolled, avoiding the werewolf's teeth but not its outstretched claws.

The long claws raked me, from my shoulder to my waist. Pain coursed through me. I clenched my fists as blood poured out from the wound. The wound didn't feel deep, but the length of it made up for that. Streams of blood flowed out, bright red in a dark forest.

I smiled bitterly. My confidence had drove me out here. My stubbornness that there was no werewolf. But what a tale this would be. If I could just scrape together enough concentration to Apparate to St. Mungo's, I would become a legend. The one who survived a werewolf attack. Alone.

A growl filled the air. My eyes widened. I stumbled away, but it was too late. The werewolf pounced on top of me, its teeth sinking into the flesh of my back.

How the Forbidden Forest Got It's Name
EDITED VERSION

I stumbled into the forest, clutching my lantern tightly as ventured even further into the menacing woods. I lifted the bright lantern near a looming tree to inspect it. I stumbled backwards, disbelief surely evident on my face. I rubbed my eyes.

My eyes are playing tricks on me, I thought. Just for a moment, I had seen a face etched into the rough bark of the tree. No, surely the woods were just psychologically traumatic. There couldn't actually be anything dangerous in it...could it?

I gripped my lantern with my right hand and swung it away from the branches of the tree. I had to go deeper. I had to confirm whether my suspicious were true or not. Rumors of a werewolf living inside had been unsettling enough.

What will happen if it comes out and attacks me? says my mind, doing nothing to help my fear. Nothing will happen. My friends are playing a prank on me. Werewolves definitely did notlive in the forest.

No! It is here! argued my mind. I silenced the voices. I walked for a while, the woods silent except for the occasional crinkle of grass. Finally, when I heard it for the ninth time, I tried to look for the sound.

I spun towards where the sound had come from.

I shut the voice out and concentrated on finding the sound.

I approached the sound, eyes wide alert. Movement in the shadows. I blinked. Surely I had imagined it. No. The movement came again.

Crinkle. Whatever was in the shadows...it had been following me. I switched the lantern into my other hand so I could retrieve my wand from my right pocket. I slipped my hand inside, grasped the familiar English oak wood and took it out. While adjusting my fingers into the correct position, I spotted movement in the shadows. It had been so fast; I almost hadn't noticed it.

The lantern flickered, increasing the level of creepiness. After five or six flickers, it sputtered out. I mentally muttered a curse.

"Lumos," I muttered, and my wand glowed with light. I headed towards the shadows, keeping my wand close in case the creature decided to bite or break it.

I will not deny it; I screamed. A loud piercing scream. My lantern dropped out of my hand and rolled away into the darkness.

The scream helped. It seemed to unbalance the creature. I breathed heavily as I ran in the direction where I thought I had come from. Curse it. I knew I shouldn't have come alone.

The creature howled behind me, the unmistakeable sound of a werewolf. I twisted around just as it sauntered in, a little too confident for my liking.

"Incendio," I breathed, doing the practised wand movement. A small burst of flames shot at the werewolf, barely heating it.

"Incendio Duo!" I shouted, louder since the fear was giving me strength. The werewolf turned towards me, its eyes blood red. Flames shot towards its head, bigger in comparison to the previous result.

"Incendio Tria!" I shouted, remembering the most powerful version of Incendio. A large burst of flames shot from the wand, and I felt my energy deplete.

The werewolf howled in pain, a loud unbearable noise. It was burnt badly. A patch of brown-black in a sea of dark grey. The werewolf bared its teeth at me menacingly, promising revenge for the burn I caused it.

Adrenaline coursed through my veins as the werewolf pounced. Time seemed to slow down. Drop and roll. I reminded myself. I dropped and rolled, avoiding the werewolf's teeth but not its outstretched claws.

The long claws raked me, from my shoulder to my waist. Pain. All I could feel was pain. I clenched my fists as blood poured out from the wound. The wound didn't feel deep, but the length of it made up for that. Streams of blood flowed out, bright red in a dark forest.

I smiled bitterly at the werewolf's misshapen form. It had hit the tree I was standing in front of. I closed my eyes, thinking back on my stupid acts. My confidence had drove me out here. My stubbornness that there was no werewolf. But whata tale this would be.

If I could just scrape enough concentration to apparate to St. Mungo's, I would become a legend. The one who had survived a werewolf attack. By themselves. A heavy growl filled the air. My eyes widened and filled with dread. I stumbled away, but it was too late.

The werewolf pounced on top of me, teeth sinking into the flesh of my back.
