Rocky Road
@Dennis Harris
Mac had to stand on the tips of his toes to look over the counter. In the display, there was just about every flavor of ice cream you could think of. Some were exactly what you'd expect to find in an ice cream parlor, like the classic strawberry or vanilla, while others were... less orthodox. While the stranger flavors piqued his interest, he didn't have a lot of galleons to spend, so he decided to go with something safer.
"Um... do you have rocky road?" Mac asked the burly looking man behind the counter, who responded with a grunt. He was soon handed a waffle cone piled high with a hodgepodge of chocolate, nuts and marshmallows, haphazardly thrown together in an oh so deliciously unhealthy treat. The taste reminded him of home, of past summers that had come and gone.
Summer vacation was always a welcome thing for Mac, but lately, the thought of it looming over the horizon was more depressing than anything else. It seemed like he'd just arrived at Hogwarts and now the school year was almost over. As much as he missed his family, he wasn't ready to go home. There was still so much he wanted to do at Hogwarts, so much to see. Sure, he'd be back in a few months, but a few months could feel like an eternity under the right conditions.
He looked back over his shoulder at Dennis, who had tagged along with him to the parlor. Days like this needed to be cherished while he still had the chance to cherish them.
"You can get whatever you want," he smiled at his Hufflepuff friend as he sat down at the counter, legs dangling off the edge of the stool. "My treat." He didn't have a lot of money, but it wasn't like he was going to spend it on anything else. Maybe once they were done here, they could go to the gag shop and buy a wizard cracker or something.

"Whatever I want?"
Dennis clapped his hands together, looking between Mac and the ice cream with his jaw hanging open loosely. He watched the guy behind the counter hand Mac a waffle cone of Rocky Road and then turned to place his own order. "Uh, scoop of-" He looked over the flavors again before blurting out the first to peak his interest. "Fudge brownie!" His smile grew, ear to ear as he watched the man scoop the ice cream into a crisp waffle cone and hand it over the counter to him. He pushed onto his toes to take it from him, thanking him before turning to thank Mac as well.
"Thanks by the way, I've had a sweet tooth since I got to Hogwarts. The one sweet I almost ate was changed into a real toad by some Slytherin. Probably couldn't catch it if it had stayed chocolate anyways, they don't really tell you the things jump when you get them." Dennis happily licked away at his scoop of fudge brownie, following Mac to the stools at the counter and sitting next to him. He rambled often, he could talk for hours about pretty much anything and often would. Being an only child gave him ample opportunity to chat away back home, having no one talk over him or even challenge his authority at the dinner table. He propped his feet on the small bar given to do so and leaned forward on the counter, eyes on his waffle cone as he enjoyed the treat.

Mac laughed at that as he propped his feet up on the bar. "Y'know, I've never had a chocolate frog... I don't think I'd want to eat anything that moves, anyway." On the counter was a bag full of utensils, each one wrapped in decorative paper. Mac grabbed one of the spoons, tearing the bag open before sticking it in his ice cream. The man behind the counter gave him a strange look for eating out of a waffle cone with a spoon like a Godless heathen, but he found it was a lot less messy than the alternative.
"Poor little toad," he sighed as he coaxed a chunk of marshmallow out of the over-sized scoop of ice cream on his cone. "I wonder what kind of spell that was?"
His eyes rolled back as he popped the marshmallow into his mouth. Mac was grateful that Dennis suggested this, not just because the ice cream was incredible, but because he never got the chance to go anywhere anymore. Outside of the outdoor classes like Herbology and Flying, he didn't get out much. Had he even left Hogwarts since he got off the train at the start of the year? He didn't think so. The change of scenery was a welcome one. Again, it got him thinking about what he'd do once the year was over. They offered a summer camp program, sure, but he doubted that his mum would let him stay; she'd miss him too much.
"You're English, right?" He asked, less of a question and more of an observation. With that accent, it was rather obvious that Dennis was English. "Where are you from? I've always wanted to go to London, myself, but I've never had the chance to."

Dennis watched his ice cream slowly disappear as he licked away at it, his tongue working hard to scoop as much off the top as possible with every lick. "Yeah, I'm kind of glad it got away. I think I would've lost my lunch if I felt it move in my mouth." He spoke very plainly, as if he didn't particularly feel much for what he was saying, but instead focused on the ice cream he was staring down. "He should be happy now, running around the Hogwarts ground with a real life and all." Turning the cone in his hand, Dennis corrected the ice cream if it ever fell too far to any one side, making sure it was flat on top in case it started to melt. It'd be a waste if a huge glob were to fall off. A mess and a waste.
Nodding at Mac's question, he glanced over to him, then back to his ice cream. "Yeah, this little old town called Stoke Saint Mary." Another lick. "It's really small, my dad once said that we're so tiny and forgotten, we never even made it on a map. He's right too, I've never seen a map with Stoke Saint Mary on it, but I could mark it for you if you ever needed me to. Right outside of Taunton. Now that's on a map. Haven't the foggiest clue as to why, Stoke Saint Mary is much cooler than Taunton." Dennis rambled again, one foot falling from the stools bar to dangle loosely under him. He had almost finished his scoop, only falling silent again to bite off small pieces of cone so he could better reach the ice cream.

Rocky Road
Mac didn't mind Dennis' rambling so much. He was quite used to it, living with so many siblings in such a small house. There was nary a quiet moment with them around. He wedged out another spoonful of ice cream, eating away at it as Dennis spoke and nodding along ever so often. "I'm from Portstewart. Well- sort of, anyway. We kind of live on the outskirts. It takes a while to get to town, out there."
"Hey, you should come to my house sometime. I-If you're able to, I mean. We live on a farm, so there's a lot of land. I wonder if Mary's had her lambs yet..." The last part of that sentence was muttered under his breath, more to himself than Dennis. As he realized he'd begun to trail off, he continued, his eyes lighting up. "Mary is one of our sheep. She's been pregnant for-" he paused, pursing his lips as he counted on his fingers. "-five months now." He kicked his legs underneath the bar, smiling to himself at the thought. "Have you ever held a lamb? They're so soft... they don't like being separated from their mamas, though, so you'll want to sit next to her while you hold 'em." He stuck his spoon down in the cone, trying to coax out what precious little ice cream was left inside. "She has to trust you, too, or she'll get mad when she sees you holdin' her lamb... and I mean mad. Guess most folks you meet would get mad, too, if they saw a stranger holdin' their baby."
He sighed a little as his mini-rant about sheep came to an end, staring off at the window into the busy streets of Diagon Alley. Then, as if realizing something, he turned back to Dennis with a smile. "Wanna go to the gag shop after this? I've been wanting to open a wizard cracker for a while now. They sound like fun."
