Some Early Morning Reading
The sun had barely made an appearance in the morning sky, but Tatiana was already wide awake and staring up at the ceiling of her new dormitory. It was always a little harder to sleep the first few nights in a new place, away from your home. Until leaving for Hogwarts, she had never ventured away from her small town on the north west coast of England. She had attended a muggle school, had muggle friends, and spent most of her free time alone. This place was new, and very different. But if there was one thing she was good at, it was school. And if she could look past the castle, the magic, the ghosts, and everyone being an absolute stranger- that’s all it was, school. And that made it so she could relax, at least for a bit. Though, probably better to find something a little more engaging if I’m really looking for a distraction, she thought.
She sat up, swung her legs over the edge of the bed, and looked out the window. She could see the orange hue rising over the tops of the trees to meet the bright blue of the sky. She liked the morning, everything was still, quiet. Standing, she pulled her sheets and comforter flat across her mattress and placed her pillow on top. She moved around the room as softly as she could, trying not wake the other girls in her dorm. Opening her trunk, she grabbed a pair of jeans and a cardigan, got her headphones off the nightstand, and shouldered her bag that was hanging from the end of her bed. Now dressed and prepared for the day, she set off into the castle.
The corridors were bare, except for the few yawning students just waking and moving about, most heading toward the great hall for breakfast. As she moved through the halls and passed the courtyard, the air still had a slight chill to it, the sun not quite above the tree line yet. Tatiana roughly combed her fingers through her hair as she walked, suddenly aware that she hadn’t bothered to look in a mirror before leaving her room this morning. She took a quick detour to the girls lavatory as she was passing. Rummaging through her bag at the sink, she was grateful that she’d barely unpacked since she arrived and her toothbrush and toothpaste were still in there. After a quick brush, swish of mouthwash, more finger combing, and a splash of water on her face, she now felt more prepared to be seen in public. "Wouldn’t want to make a bad impression", she joked aloud to herself, before grabbing her things and continuing on.
The library wasn’t much further, and to her delight, was still peacefully empty at this time of the morning. Having no competition for space, she picked a large, cozy table in the back corner by a window and proceeded to lay out her study materials. One Potions book, and two for Herbology- the two subjects she was most interested in for the upcoming year. Granted, only one of the herbology books was school mandated, the other was given to her by her mother. Having been a witch, and an apothecary, Tatiana’s mother had meticulously documented all of her tried (and failed) remedies and draughts, medicinal and the like. The book was large, leather bound, and heavily weathered from use and the elements. It had a large clasp on the front that attached to a thick leather strap that wrapped around the right edge, from the back cover to the front, barely holding in the overstuffed pages within. Tatiana, being her artistic little helper, had illustrated the herbs and elixirs for every page of notes her mother had chronicled. This was a product of love, time and care, and all of their time spent together. It made her feel warm to look at, and a little less homesick. She had come to the library to get a head start on her studies before classes began, and because it was somewhere she felt safe and comfortable. Placing all of the books in front of her, she placed one headphone in her ear, started her music, and began skimming and exploring the boundless knowledge of the pages.

Some Early Morning Reading
Amaya loved coming to the Library, more than any place in the castle. She loved the quiet, it was a nice environment to study, or in her case, write. She always kept spare parchment and quills on her, just encase she had a nagging to write something. Today, as she walked in, her arms were full of parchment, books, and a few quills. She walked past all the tables and all of the rest of the students, and found a dark quiet place between two bookshelves. She laid her things around her, and grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill. Every time she came into the Library, she considered talking to someone, and she always seemed to make a new friend out of it. She saw a brown-haired girl, sitting at a table and reading, and pondered if she should come over. She sighed, and looked back to her parchment. Half of the page was filled with small words, and the other a picture of a half-drawn wizard. She looked over to the girl once more, and grabbed a blank piece. Every few minutes she glanced over at the girl, and slowly but surely, a picture of her formed onto her paper.

Some Early Morning Reading
The sun was up now, and so was the rest of the castle. Tatiana had barely noticed as the tables around her began to fill with students. Every once in a while, she would catch a glimpse in her peripheral view of someone moving past her amongst the shelves. But she never looked up. It was pretty easy to stay distracted with her books in front of her. Her fragile ego and often faltering self esteem kept her from slacking off on her studies, she would never dare be unprepared going into her new classes for the first time. If the syllabus said to read the first chapter before class, you can bet she had, at least twice, and the chapter that followed.
Riveting educational materials or not, it had been a few hours since she'd originally arrived. The muscles in her neck were starting to feel tight from angling down over her books and her legs had stiffened. Maybe it was time for a quick break. After all, she had just finished reviewing a section, now was as good a time as any. Marking her place and closing her book, she reached her arms behind her in a stretch. She thought she could feel someone's gaze on her, but looking around, she couldn't find any eyes looking back at her. Must be my imagination. She was trying to ease the stress in her neck, moving it in slow circles, when she felt the sensation again. This time, she caught a glimpse of the person, a girl sitting just a few tables away. Had this been the same person as before?
In an attempt to ease her paranoia, she pretended to be looking at her book once more, her head tilted ever so slightly in the girl's direction. She allowed a few stray hairs to fall down in front of her face, shielding her inquisitive glances. After a few moments of observation, she could see the girl was scribbling something down on her parchment. Writing? Drawing? Tatiana couldn't tell. Either way, she wouldn't mind some company, and this did seem like the perfect opportunity to meet someone new. Noticing the girl seemed to be sitting alone, she quickly gathered her books and bag up in her arms and made her way over to the table.
As she approached, she started to distinguish that what was being inked on the page wasn't words, but was in fact a drawing. She couldn't see it clearly but it looked like a person. Was it her? Is that why she had been looking at her? Just a few feet away now, the picture was coming more into view and it started to look more and more similar to her own face the closer she got. Not wanting to potentially embarrass the girl, Tatiana decided that introducing herself would be a better segue into a conversation than asking about the drawing. Awkwardly trying to hold up her books in one arm, she extended the other one as she approached, "Hi, I'm Tatiana. Would you mind if I joined you?"

Some Early Morning Reading
She saw I was drawing her Was Amaya's first thought as she started to walk over to her. Sometimes people would be angry she was drawing them without permission, yet, sometimes people were happy she chose them to draw. Some people were just in a good position for an art piece, she usually gave her drawings away to the person she was drawing. Though, she was particularly proud of this one, and she flipped it over as the girl approached. She might be mad she had been staring at her, she might be happy I drew her The girl walked closer. She might ask me to stop staring, or throw it away She stopped in-front of her table. She could tell everyone i'm a creep or something. She closed her eyes, and waited for her to yell, or something. "Hi, I'm Tatiana. Would you mind if I joined you?" She awkwardly looked up at smiled "N-no I don't mind" she was so relieved. She scooted over, and grabbed the flipped-over drawing, pulling it back in-front of her. Please don't ask to see it, please don't ask to see it, she probably wants to see it She felt more shy than usual, in the presence of the girl she had just drawn. What would I say, she looked good in that position? That sounds like i'm flirting or something! She just looked pretty, and it was almost like she was posing... what do I say? What if she doesn't even ask and i'm stressing for nothing

Some Early Morning Reading
Tatiana awkwardly retracted her hand, embarrassed that she seemed to have startled the girl a bit. Her shoulders looked tense and she seemed a bit nervous. "I hope it's alright," she said, placing her books down on the table. "I've just been here all morning studying on my own and thought it might do me some good to socialize a little every once in a while."
She smiled back at the girl, hanging her bag on the back of one of the chairs and pulling out the one directly across from her, slumping into the seat. "Whew," she sighed aloud, dramatically mimicking the act of wiping sweat from her brow. "All this reading has really taken it out of me today." She had been in the library quite often that week. Her classes were picking up, and even a diligent student such as herself was finding the week's workload difficult.
Tatiana noticed her robes had similar embellishments to her own. Another Ravenclaw! she thought, excited. She had mostly avoided her common room area the last few days and had failed to meet anyone in her own house. Though, not at all surprising that when she finally managed to meet one of her housemates, it would be in the library of all places. Ravenclaws were stereotypically known for being overachieving students and, at least with what she'd experienced so far, the sentiment wasn't false. "I hope I didn't interrupt your studies." The girl seemed really shy, but she wanted to try her best to make friends if possible.

Some Early Morning Reading
Maggie groaned as she shielded her eyes from the harsh morning light. The last thing that she wanted to do was Herbology homework, but she had procrastinated all day yesterday and she was facing the consequences. She glanced down at her watch, one of the few Muggle items that actually proved useful in the castle. It seemed like everything Muggles had invented had been put on steroids and thrown into a magic castle, but Maggie tried to keep as many Muggle items as she could around, to remind her of home.Maggie tore at her hair as she stared blankly at the empty sheet of paper laid before her, multiple Herbology books strewn around her. It had to be her least favorite subject by far, she had the polar opposite of a “green thumb”. She was getting desperate, and she had to ask for help, as much as it wounded her Gryffindor pride. That was her Plan B, anyway. Plan A had been to finish the homework easily, but that obviously wasn’t working out. Plan c had been to cheat, and she was just about to do so when she spotted a familiar face. There! A Ravenclaw girl sat talking to another girl, a smile on her face. She recognized her from her Herbology class, and, luckily for Maggie, she was a Herbology whiz. She quickly strided over to her table. “Hey, you’re Tatiana Crane, right? I’m in your Herbology class... do you mind helping me out a bit? I’m Maggie, Maggie Parker, by the way.” She smiled at Tatiana and the girl she was sitting with, who she was sure she recognized from one of her classes... her name was Maya Jackson? Anne Jackson? Something like that...…

Just as Tatiana had opened her mouth to ask the other girl for her name, someone else approached their table. "Hey, you’re Tatiana Crane, right?" she heard from behind her. Shifting in her seat to face the new voice, she thought she recognized her. A gryffindor? Maybe. I think she's in one of my classes. "I’m in your Herbology class... do you mind helping me out a bit?" Herbology! That was it. "I’m Maggie, Maggie Parker, by the way." Her brown hair fell in front of her face and she looked a little exasperated.
"Oh.. Uhm, hi!" She greeted her. "Yes I am," she nodded, "and of course! I'd be more than happy to help out."
Looking down, she noticed her belongings were carelessly scattered across the table. "Oh shoot, sorry about this," she said, shuffling her scattered papers into a neat stack. She quickly stacked her books, slid them over, and shifted herself into the chair she had hung her bag from, making room for Maggie. "Please, join us," she said, gesturing toward the table. Placing her potions book back in her bag, she removed her leather bound book and placed it down next to her other textbook, opening to her notes. While she primarily used it for sketching found herbs and other various plants as she found them while foraging, she also decided it would only be appropriate to also track her Herbology notes there. "I've actually already been reviewing our Herbology materials this morning." And by reviewing, what she really meant was sketching the plants from memory as they came up in the lesson in order to procrastinate reading further. But that was just because her brain was basically fried from the strenuous week she'd had, and either way, she was still confident enough in the material.

She awkwardly smiled at the girl, they seemed to be having there own conversation. She rolled up the drawing and sat it beside her, pulling another piece of parchment from her robe pocket, and setting it on the table. She unrolled it, and continued drawing the wizard from earlier, hoping the girls would keep talking and not ask to see it or question what she was drawing. She kind of put her arm around it, not to be rude, but just to block the drawing from their sight. She wasn't fond of what she had drawn, unlike her drawing of the girl beside her, but she was forced to keep it this way. She knew there was probably magic to help you draw, she just liked using this way. Every once in a while she would glance up at them, hoping they weren't staring over her shoulder, but it just looked like they were doing homework. Phew... She internally sighed and continued drawing. She would gladly show them her art if they asked, well... more like shyly, but usually people just sit around her and watch her draw. It really makes her feel self-conscious and unfocused when people do that, so at-least these people were just working on homework. She sketched out the wizards facial features, and smiled. She could make two more friends.

Some Early Morning Reading
“You are an absolute saint, Tatiana.” Maggie sighed, finishing off her paper by writing her name at the top. The two girls had made small talk while they were doing homework, and Maggie thought that Tatiana was nice enough. The other girl hadn’t really spoken up though, and she’d been drawing on a piece of paper for awhile now. She had her arm positioned in a way that made it so Maggie couldn’t see what she was drawing, however, and she probably didn’t want anyone to see it either. Maggie had thought it over, and she had finally remembered the girl’s name: Amaya Jackson. She seemed nice enough, although a bit quiet. Maggie and Amaya could balance each other out in that aspect. Tatiana was kind as well, and she too was an artist. As she’d been helping Maggie with her homework, she’d drawn out a number of plants and diagrams, and she had proven herself to be a talented artist. “So,” Maggie began, “what do you guys like to do for fun around here?” she looked to both Tatiana and Amaya, hoping that Amaya would be brave enough to respond. They were both Ravenclaws, and Maggie hoped they had new ideas for what to do around the castle, as Maggie was beginning to become restless.

Some Early Morning Reading
She looked up from her paper for a second, moving her arm over a bit, and looking at Maggie. "We could go for a walk outside.." She mumbled, knowing the girl might not think of that as "fun". Amaya really just needed to get some fresh air, maybe stick her feet in the lake. She had always loved being outside, and knew other kids didn't. It also looked like it might rain, but also unlike other people, she loved the rain. It was always so calming to her, to walk in the rain, or hear it patter on her window. She shrugged, still looking at Maggie, and quickly moved her arm back. She didn't realize until now, but she had been tapping her quill on her paper, and it had bled through onto the table. She stopped, and set her quill beside her "...or not". The library seemed more quiet than usual, and her voice seemed loud, even though it was barely a whisper. She felt like she was the center of attention, and looked down at her paper once again. She grabbed her quill, dipped it into her ink bottle, and kept drawing. She felt shy, and didn't want to mess this up, so the best thing would be to wait for a response, which was what she was doing. She hoped she didn't come off as rude, she hadn't really talked to them, she purposely positioned her arm in a way so that they couldn't see her drawing, and she didn't really look up from her paper. She wanted to mumble an apology, but then she might seem desperate for friends. Just don't mess this up! She looked, up for a second, but looked down at her paper again when she realized she didn't have much to say to them. She awkwardly looked down at her paper for a second, before moving her arm again. And knocking the drawing onto the floor. Her face turned a bright red, as she awkwardly sat there in silence, embarrassed, and wanting to leave. Oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god
