At least a little more woken up from a morning walk in order to avoid the Great Hall, EmmaLee dragged her weary self down to the basements for potions. Of all the classes to have after a night, a week, a fortnight like the one she had just had. She was not looking forward to the debacle this class would be. Maybe for once they would just take notes and not do any potions that could blow up in her face if she was distracted by her ever whirling brain.
EmmaLee leaned against the door to the classroom in a slightly dramatic, woeful fashion and pushed it open to reveal that she was, thankfully, not the first person to arrive. Granted, she wasn't the last either so that was something good as well. Either early or late might have caused people to notice her and that was her exact opposite goal right now.
Last night she had tried terribly to sleep but just could not with her mind rolling over her familial problems and her invasive thoughts about one Stephen Schwartz. After the light from the rising sun through the high window of her dorm room finally crossed over her face, she conceded that there really was no point in laying in bed and coming to no conclusion about either situation.
So she had gotten up and got ready for the day, then set about wandering the upper halls of Hogwarts, an area she was least likely to meet Stephen accidentally. She couldn't go to the Great Hall, because she had no idea when Stephen might arrive for his own breakfast and her stomach was still churning from the rude fool she had made of herself when having dinner, well, before having dinner with him last night. She couldn't really say she had dinner because she had left before she had eaten anything. She had said way too little and left way too early to really be considered a polite conversation with a supposed friend.
She couldn't wander the grounds because she recalled Stephen talking about going on morning runs around Ilvermorny, and she didn't know whether he continued to do those while he was at Hogwarts, and she also didn't know when he started or ended them. At that pondering, the invasive thought monster brought her an image of what Stephen might look like if she ran into him on his run around the grounds and she had to shake her head quite hard and think of her father in a frilly dress in order to make it go away. She had stood stock still for a moment in the middle of the hallway with her fingers to her forehead, her eyes wide and set on the stone floor. When and where had she even gotten the material for some of these ideas?
Eventually she had taken a deep breath, moved on, and gotten an apple and a piece of toast from the kitchens before heading to the upper levels to walk and converse with the portraits that were awake. Talking to them and the movement of her walk around the halls and up and down various staircases was a wonderful mind-clearer until the bell for classes rang.
EmmaLee sighed as she walked over to her regular seat at the back of the class, the better to arrive last and leave first, but once she set her bag on the table, she looked up at the board to see that there was a seating chart there. Apparently there would be assigned partners for today's Swelling Solution lesson. Well, at least she wouldn't fail alone today, but the teacher had placed her and her partner on the first row. Maybe the better to assist their terrible potions skills.
EmmaLee giggled a little at the thought as she took her seat and started gathering supplies. She was paired with Marietta Griffis, a red-haired Hufflepuff girl that EmmaLee had had very little interaction with outside of classes. From what EmmaLee had seen, she was a nice girl who was almost as bad at potions as herself. Well, it would be an eventful class at least if they could manage to produce something of any worth together.

Marietta wasn't doing much better that morning. Thankfully for different familial reasons. Her father had stopped returning her letters. Marietta had thought he was doing better, his tone in his letters had suddenly become happier. Before she could decipher why though, they stopped coming. She knew nothing bad could have happened to him. Her dad was waaay to good as wizard for that. But if it really was just a wampuse mulling that had put him in the hospital for a few weeks, he still would have written her once he was concious. Or gotten a nurse to write to her. Marietta almost giggled at the idea of her father dictating a letter to a nurse so she knew he was okay.
Sleep hadn’t been far away the previous night thanks to her rock awesome therapy cat, but even Jello couldn’t chase Marietta’s concern away when she woke up. All he could do then was provide fluffy support. Which was nice, but still didn’t solve the problem. So Marietta was rather out of it too, having hardly eaten anything at breakfast. The nightmare and deadly forecast of any food loving child.
As Marietta entered the room a little before class started, she saw the seating chart. Typically, Marietta was late because she tripped over blank and caused a commotion in the hall. Today though, she’d been so focused on her thoughts, she hadn’t rushed to class. The worst that had happened was she had bumped into a few people. Once Marietta located her name she took a seat next to Emma Lee. Marietta was familiar with the friendly looking girl from classes and such. They were in the same house after all. Marietta wondered why she hadn’t tried to be friends with the girl after her first friends had ghosted her.
“Hello and good morning! Ready to make some potions? I’m sorry to say I’m not particularly good at it… but I’m here to help!” Marietta would smile at Emma Lee, it wasn’t genuine but she hopped the other girl wouldn’t notice it. Marietta really wanted to make a good impression seeing as how she was pretty low in the department at the moment. Shoving any of her negative emotions, in the back of her mind. Marietta made a promise to herself that she wouldn’t let her own problems get in the way of making sure her and Emma Lee made a decent potions and started on the path to become friends.

As EmmaLee was gathering and sorting supplies, Marietta arrived with a chipper good morning. There was something just a hair flat in the girl's greeting like she wasn't having the best morning either, but like a true Hufflepuff, she had decided to overcome it, or, well, shove it down, most likely. That was the real Hufflepuff way: shove it down and smile so no one worries.
The white-haired girl probably wouldn't have noticed it if she wasn't a Hufflepuff and she hadn't been learning how to watch people from watching her mother all her life. Her mother was a master at seeing what people didn't want her to see about them and EmmaLee had picked up more than a few tricks to do the same thing. Regardless, EmmaLee didn't know Marietta enough to pry, and had her own problems, so she put the minor observation on the mental shelf and chuckled as the other girl mentioned her own lack of talent at potions.
"Well, I suppose we are both 'ere to 'elp." EmmaLee said, pushing down her own problems and smiling widely at her fellow badger. "I'm not very good at potions either." She put a hand to the side of her mouth and whispered conspiratorially. "That's probably why Professor put us at the front." She said with another little giggle. "The quicker to clean up our mess when it explodes."
EmmaLee laid out the tools they would need and placed the dried nettles, pufferfish eyes, water, and bat spleen they would need more or less in the order they would need to use them. That was at least easier.
Potions was the class that EmmaLee cared the least about, though she did try to pay attention enough to make a solid Acceptable. It always reminded her of her father and his untimely end, and how her mother tried to keep him alive by almost constantly talking about him and keeping his picture everywhere, even now. The ever-present moving, but never speaking pictures around the house often made EmmaLee feel more like his ghost was haunting her life, rather than his memory was being kept alive. At least a proper ghost could speak to her, interact with her, give her some semblance of his personality. EmmaLee knew nothing about him aside from what her mother had told her, and now what the LeDames women had told her, and so it was hard to feel any real connection to him.
To EmmaLee, she couldn't love her father as deeply as her mother wanted her to simply because he was her father and maybe that was the rub. Maybe EmmaLee was subconsciously rebelling against the fact that she didn't want to be anything like a ghost, a vapor, a shadow of something her mother missed so badly. EmmaLee didn't want feel like her mother loved her simply because she was like her father, so EmmaLee resisted being anything like him.
So much for pushing down her own problems, EmmaLee turned to Marietta again and gestured to the items.
"Is there any particular part you want to do?" She offered, continuing to smile at her classmate. "Maybe you need to crush out some aggression with the pestle." She finished with a small giggle.

Marietta would giggle along with EmmaLee. Thankful the other girl hadn't noticed the ingenuity of her smile. "That sounds about right. I always feel awful when I make something explode. I try to clean it up, but you always know there's something your gonna miss and someone else is gonna have to do it." Marietta would say the last part rather sheepishly. "Well at least sense we're both bad at potions there will be no finger pointing when it boils over or makes the whole room smell like radishes. " Marietta would cheerily add. Seeming to be in a much better mood after EmmaLee's joke.
And she was! It was easy to forget your problems when hanging out with someone sweet and friendly. The threat of her father being in a coma or something still loomed in the back of her mind. But it was easier.
Marietta wasn't typically comfortable in the dreary basement. Particularly potions class. It always felt like that one seat in public school; the one directly under the air-conditioner. It wasn't necessarily frigid, more drafty. Despite their being no windows and no way wind could access the room. Except maybe magic, Wait is there an invisible magic air conditioner in the potions classroom? It would have to be a really weird one. I mean how would it make the whole room feel this way instead of different spots having differnt feels? Marietta would think as EmmaLee prepared things
Marietta would laugh lightly at the other girl's pestle joke. So EmmaLee had noticed Marietta wasn't doing well. She guessed it wasn't really a bad thing. EmmaLee wasn't insisting they talk about it or asking what was wrong, just making light of the situation. Marietta appreciated that. Talking about what was wrong was usually Marietta's MO when people were down. When it came to her own problems though, she hated it. She always felt like she was being a burden unloading all of her problems on the other person. This way, Marietta got cheered up and she knew for sure the other person was just having fun. "Oh you can go ahead and pick first!" Marietta would offer. "No aggression here! Though-" Marietta would hedge a little. "Do you think I could handle the eyes? Its a bit weird, but I like the way they feel between my fingers." Marietta would ask this in a quieter voice, as if she spoke her request louder it would be intruding.
