A Meeting
He tried to draw in a deep breath, tasting the damp gloom of the air surrounding him, but hiccuped at the end of it, breathing still torn by his previous bout of crying. When Isaac closed his eyes, images still flickered in his vision. The corner of a hazel eye, the splintering of glass, splattered blood. And so, he kept his eyes painfully open and aware of the horrific forest.@Illowy Magnard | @Morfran Griffith | mention: @Dinara Lucey | @ Xailah Alptraum
Wiping the tears from his cheeks, he couldn't help but feel mingled shame and relief at the way that Griffith was smiling instead of furious, smiling for the first time in his memory. The welshman's smile changed his entire face, making his normally glacier blue eyes seem almost lighter, the color of a cloudless sky. He held out two sturdy palms, tucking his wand into his pocket, and for all the world, seemed warm and real.
The kindness of the gesture almost brought tears to his eyes.
Illowy went first, pulled up to her feet to clasp at his left hand. He didn't dare meet her eyes, afraid of what he would find there...afraid of what had happened to her. So instead, he focused on the professor. The other hand remaining was for him. Ducking his head so his unruly hair fell over his eyes, Isaac shakily took step after step towards him, swallowing a heavy lump in his throat. He couldn't cry, not again. It was enough to cry once.
Sniffling quietly, Isaac placed his smaller hand into Morfran's calloused one, feeling a small reassuring squeeze. A quiet sense of safeness blossomed inside of him. He couldn't remember the last time that anyone had held his hand. Not even his mother, as kind as she was.
As they began to move through the forest once more, he almost jumped at all of the small noises he heard. Everything seemed louder, darker, and stranger. Peering at the trees in detail, he noticed chillingly that they seemed to rotate as the group passed...watching them with gruesome faces. Shrieking in the distance caused his heart to pound, and he held Griffith's hand even tighter, sickening fear causing his stomach to churn.
It was then that he began to notice another detail that he had missed while running. Spiraling from the trees were bone-colored strings. At the end of each one was what appeared to be a tiny doll or a carved figurine. The figures were disturbingly similar to people, strings wrapped around their fragile necks, arms and legs hanging limp. A shiver ran down his spine.
One of the dolls seemed to be hanging especially close by. It was as if the branch had leaned towards them, almost right in their path. He peered at the hanging doll and felt his heart skip a beat.
It had brown frizzy hair, a round eerily smiling face, warm eyes, a small handkerchief, and the hint of pride in the rag-doll's expression was undeniable. Made crudely of tattered string and straw, he knew that it was Dinara Lucey. Her likeness was hanging, dead, twirling with the last bits of noxious wind that floated in the forest.
Briefly letting go of Griffith's hand, he extended a trembling hand and carefully untied the doll, holding it in his palm.
He turned when Illowy spoke suddenly, shattering the fragile silence of the woods.
She was holding a doll in her hand as well. And it was a doll of...himself."Professor Morfran..."
Isaac didn't want to think about what it meant.
He blinked miserably. Was there a doll of Illowy somewhere? Of Xailah? Of Griffith? The fear was becoming too much for his mind, and mingled with exhaustion to fuel his anger. Who was doing this? Who was toying with their minds? Who was leaving out these terrible things? Was it those giants? Or some other evil creature?
"Tá súil agam go dtéann siad go hlfreann.." he muttered beneath his breath.
I hope they go to hell.
It was something foul that his mother said often whenever she was furious. And it was true. He didn't care how it sounded, he wanted whatever creature this was, dead.
Mutely, he walked over to Illowy and Griffith, showing them the doll of Dinara. Strangely enough, the longer it seemed to stay in his hand, the more his hand began to hurt. A stinging pain flooded his fingers, and he was forced to drop the doll.
After a few moments, he asked a question that he knew none of them wanted the answer to.
"What if it's too late?"

Elizabeth had long since lost track of the footprints and had given up on finding them, resorting to turning around and finding her way back when she almost stepped on the doll. She would have if the root hadn't tripped her. In fact, she probably would have walked right past it, unaware of the strange object lying on the ground. But she had fallen, and (after frantically checking to make sure some evil creature hadn't grabbed her foot), she saw it lying right in front of her, facedown. What a strange thing to see in this place, she thought, picking up the soggy doll and turning it over.
She gave a sharp intake of breath as she looked at the features and Elizabeth was sure she knew almost immediately what it was. A voodoo doll.
Years ago, when she was about seven or eight, she had gone to her friend's house for a sleepover. The parents had gone for about an hour, leaving her friend's 14-year-old sister in charge. But that girl had a vicious streak. As soon as the parents were gone, she had created two makeshift versions of voodoo dolls. After explaining how they work, she proceeded to terrorize the girls, threatening to harm the dolls if the girls didn't do whatever it was she wanted them to do. The doll that Elizabeth held in her hand now was much more intricate, perfectly matching Illowy's likeness, down to the part in her hair, or the shoelaces on her shoes. Elizabeth half expected something sarcastic to come out of the doll's mouth at any second.
"Oh, Illowy, I'm so sorry," Elizabeth whispered, fresh tears falling down her cheeks. She used the blanket to carefully tie the doll to her. I must keep it safe no matter what! If no harm comes to it, no harm comes to Illowy, she thought, scanning the surroundings.
It was then she noticed the silence. Silence so thick it felt like she could cut it like a knife. The little girl felt the hairs on her neck rise and she strained her ears, desperate to hear even the distant howl of a wolf or rustle of the leaves that moments ago had spooked her, but alas, there was nothing but silence. She took a few steps forward but she immediately stopped, and her blood turned cold. It appeared to be a woman, but not a nice one. This woman looked hideous, more like the witches of the fairy tales she had listened to when she was little. She turned but there was another one, and another, and another. Hideous men and women surrounding her on the ground, in the trees, all reaching out. Of course, it could all be her imagination. She was in a forest where there were trees, vines, and various plants. The Hufflepuff had plenty of experience at home seeing a monster that turned out to be nothing more than a pile of clothes, or an arm that was just a tree branch, but this was different. Out here, in the magical world, there were real creatures that Elizabeth had previously thought were the things only of nightmares. There were creatures that would use lanterns to lure you to your death and creatures that sucked out your soul.
The girl peered out into the darkness watching the beings carefully and pulled out her wand. Stopping would be no good, so she turned around the direction where she thought she had come from and began slowly walking forward, keeping her wand pointed at the figures. If any of them moved toward her, she would cast the dancing spell at them, while continuing to try to retrace her steps back.

The girl peered around the teacher to gaze at the similar doll in Issac's hand. Even she couldn't deny the likeness of the toy as it held a miniature of the cloth wrapped around her very own arm. What did all of this mean? Who was toying with them? Playing with their minds? The memory of old stories, from the wizard world and muggle world alike, flickered in her mind like a dying ember.
The girl flinched when the boy suddenly dropped the doll. Against her better judgment, she couldn't bare the leave it behind as she placed the doll back on the ground to rip a piece of her already ruined dress. Scooping up both dolls, she bound then together with care to better hold onto them.
"Dinara is fine." she tried to make her voice sound as firm as possible, but there was no hiding that she couldn't be sure, "She's with Xailah. She's fine." the girl swallowed hard. At least she hoped the Hufflepuff Prefect was fine.
The Slytherin's eyes lifted back once more to look around them at the strange symbols and objects dangling lifelessly from the trees. Something terrible was going to happen, she could feel it in her bones. Hopefully the lot of them would be enough to fend off whatever it was.

I'm going to dropkick thread into activity...come back! His haunted eyes painted the spiraling branches of trees, swirling around and around and around in a nauseating arc. Gloom and darkness lurked, yes, but there was more. The sentience of the forest seemed to loom greater and greater, to the point where he could imagine the foul glade drawing breath, exhaling fumes onto the people inside.@Morfran Griffith | mention@Dinara Lucey | @Xailah Alptraum | @Illowy Magnard
If Dinara and his dolls were there, if Xailah and Illowy's were out there somewhere, then why were there others? The ivory symbols of carved figurines hung limply over branches like chains of bones. His finger reached out to touch one, very lightly, soft as the wing of a butterfly. For a moment, the sensation of cold blistered over the tip of his index finger, before he was sent sprawling to the ground in surprise. The figurine opened its mouth and screamed, shrieking the petulant cry of a child.
Sitting in the leaf-litter, wide-eyed, Isaac wondered in terror whether or not a soul was somehow trapped in the doll. Would it kill them? Could the evil magic figurine grow legs and claws and come to get them?
He watched and waited with the countenance of prey, stock-still and unblinking. Endless seconds passed, and he remained riveted to watching the carved figure sway in the wind. But it stayed silent and unmoving, almost like an inanimate object once again. The only sign of ill intent was on its beady face, which looked full of malice.
Uncertain, he backed away from it, nearing the solid presence of Griffith and the nervous one of Illowy. Nearing the tall professor, he tugged on the welshman's sleeve in an attempt to get his attention.
"Mr. Griffith...do you know what those things are?"
He pointed an unsteady finger towards the tiny figurine, which seemed to smile at him in the dark. Between those and the dolls, he wasn't sure what was worse. It was evil magic far beyond his knowledge. The ignorance kept the boy's terrible fear alive, making his eyes glassy as he looked into the Professor's fierce blue ones. He had to know. He had to.
we've got to find the lair!

Something could be heard off in the bush somewhere, a creature, or maybe another student? He ignored it for the time being, choosing instead to focus on the little voodoo dolls that the children were holding up in front of him, asking him what they were. Did he know? No, of course not. But that didn't mean that he wasn't going to act like he had everything under control. He owed it to the children, to be some sort of a rock, a solid something they could hold on to, at least until they left.
"It looks like a doll. Just drop them into my left pocket, and we'll deal with them after we make it back home. This is no place to be inspecting odd curios."
Was it an odd curio? Yes, it was. Clearly an evil odd curio, probably filled with some sort of demented magic, unless he missed his guess, but what could you do? Tell the kids to panic? If the kids put the dolls into his pocket, he would discreetly slip his hand into his pocket and nonverbally cast finite incantatem at the dolls, hoping it was the right thing to do.
He gently squeezed Illowy's shoulder, trying to be as reassuring as possible. And Griffith was good. He was good at bluffing, astounding, even. Griffith had never been the best wizard, never been the top of his classes. He was below average with most things, or just at average. He could run well, he knew creatures upside down, inside out and backwards, he could run fast, and he could bluff. And bluffing included projecting near tangible waves of confidence. His heart didn't beat any faster than it usually did, and his hands were steady as oak.
"We're leaving, okay?"
He turned to face the boy who asked if it was too late. A thought that they were probably thinking with some manner of justification, but he had to stop the desperation as best he could, he had to quell the rising anxiety before the metaphorical stallion reared and bolted.
"And what if the sun spontaneously blew up? We'll make it out in one piece, if that takes a bit, then so be it. If your friends need help, we'll help them along the way. Calmly, slowly, steadily. Can you do that?"
He made sure to ask kindly, firmly, a smile on his face. To make it clear that he knew that the boy could indeed do it, if only he was willing.
The professor dropped his hands to his sides, keeping them loose if the students wanted a safe hand to hold on to. If they did hold his hand, he would gently squeeze as he moved carefully back towards the grounds

I believe Dianara is on vacation and said she was going to catch up when she comes back, if I'm remembering correctly
Illowy wasn't about to question the professor when he told her to place the dolls in his pocket, doing so obediently. Perhaps under normal circumstances, she would ask more questions, try to understand more of what was happening and try to commit more to memory; but in this moment of fear and her current state of health, the girl was all hands and feet, simply trying to follow commands and get out alive.
Part of her wondered how Morfran could be so calm through all of this. Did he know more about the situation then he was leading on? Or was he as scared as they were? His comforting tone and gentle smile, somewhat foreign on his usually stoic features, tried to convince her not to worry, and reassure her that he had everything under control.
Illowy gave a shallow nod, taking the man's hand once more. Even such a small act as holding onto an adults hand felt out of place for her. After all, she couldn't even recall the last time she even held her mother's hand aside when she was small and they might've been crossing the street."We'll make it out in one piece, if that takes a bit, then so be it. If your friends need help, we'll help them along the way. Calmly, slowly, steadily. Can you do that?"
As they would begin to move, Illowy shot a glance to Isaac; worry and fear in her pale eyes. Part of her, she had to admit, was afraid for their friends now; if one could call them such a thing. Where were they? Had they made it back alright? She prayed they did.
The girl stepped quietly through the forest floor, listening carefully to the world around her. She couldn't help but flinch at every odd sound, however there was one sound that was steady; as though something was rushing towards them. It made her heart pick up pace again as she stopped dead in her tracks. She almost looked like a rabbit, eyes wide, ears perked, and frozen in place, trying to find the threat through the darkness and fog. Her breath hitched in her throat, stuck there, unsure of what was coming, or if it was a sparked imagination playing a trick on her.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Elena just sorta blinked, it had taken her a second to realise it was, in fact, Griffith. Not another rapscallion kidnapper or whatever you’d call the scary guys running around the forest trying to take kids. Elena somehow had not been noticed, and honestly she blamed her height. Griffith was too tall, way too tall, the tallest person... ever. Yep, Elena decided, he was the tallest human in the whole world, and that’s why he couldn’t see her.
She ran after him and the kids trailing behind him, managing to get through the undergrowth again and this time popped out in front of him rather than somewhere off to the side, “Griffith! I found you! There were these guys at the cabins and they tried to take us but I didn’t let them and now the cabins are on fire and Mari’s being taken back to the hospital and also I think they’re after more kids!”
All this came out in a rush, she sorta, leaned over and waved at the other children, not wanting to make them feel left out, “I fired off two periculums, but they’re gone now, didn’t like it when Jangles tried to punch them in the face. And the everywhere really.”
Elena wanted a hug more than pretty much anything in the world right now and she fidgeted for half a second before hugging Griffith, and then letting go and stepping back. Not sure if she'd overstepped and pretty terrified on the whole.
I'm weak my love.

Elizabeth was shaking all over, nervously scanning her eerie surroundings. She was breathing hard, and had taken to attacking nearly everything that moved. "Terranrellegra!" she would exclaim, and another burst of light would burst from her wand and tit a nearby shrub, making it "dance" violently. The young Hufflepuff found that even scarier than the strange shadows that seemed to follow her, or the figures that still seemed to surround her despite the fact that she had been walking for what felt like hours. Tears continued to roll down he little girl's cheeks, and every so often a small sob would escape her lips. Her thoughts kept returning to her parents and sister. Would she ever see them again? How would they react when hey found out their oldest daughter had died in a forest by the school she was supposed to be safely housed in? Would her imminent death be painful? It was taking all her strength to keep herself moving forward and fighting, as all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball on the ground. That would certainly be easier than continuing to move, wondering if the next step would be her last.
She heard something behind her, a small rustling of branches and leaves, and whirled around, casting another of the dancing leg curse at yet another shrub. It shook violently. Elizabeth suppressed the urge to scream and stumbled backwards, falling over a root. The girl quickly got back up and peered into the dark forest where another figure appeared to be staring at her. This one was closer than the others, making Elizabeth's blood go cold. She turned around and ran, desperately trying to get away from it. She was so focused on escaping, she didn't notice the girl who was standing alone until - oomph, she said as she made impact with the girl, sending her sprawling to the ground with a giant thud.. She quickly righted herself and cast terranrellegra at the figure she had run into, thinking she had finally come in contact with a sinister being from the forest before recognizing her. Elizabeth didn't know her personally, bit had seen her in passing several times before.

Dinara would find herself thrown off by the brisk steps of the sturdy Professor. Xailah had proved to be a rather unlikely ally in this time, though that seemed to be a rather useless piece of information in the face of the enclosing fog. Soon enough, Dinara had lost sight of both the Professor as well as her Gryffindor friend.
To say that Dinara was terrified would be an understatement. The little Hufflepuff was basically quaking in her boots and much more, the creeping shadows beginning to appear more and more like people moving in the darkness. All the stories from her childhood about scary murderers and kidnappers suddenly flooded back to her, and she wasn't at all keen to be out in the open any longer.
Creeping over sprawling roots, Dinara let out a gasp of shock as she jumped back. It seemed as though the terrain beneath her feet had suddenly changed; the solid soil seemingly giving way to mush. Carefully peering down, her heart skipped a beat to find that the terrain had not, in fact, changed; but rather, she had stumbled upon a doll resembling that of her dear Gryffindor friend that had somehow disappeared into the woods.
Of course, this resemblance was somewhat missed by the ditsy First Year. She looked at it, frowned, before casting it aside and leaving it where it was. Her parents had always taught her to not pick up anything she didn't recognise, much less some creepy looking doll.
Wandering further into the foggy forest, Dinara's eyes roamed the area in hopes of finding a familiar face.

Steel Jaw traps, more often referred to as Bear Traps; are mechanisms used to catch animals. These strange contraptions are meant to maim and crush the helpless. They are meant to shatter weak little bones- and if lucky; instantly kill whatever fell into the shiny metal jaws. But not this one. This do-it-yourself contraption did not have the strength to cause such damage. This one was meant to surprise, and slowdown the unfortunate souls that would tread on it.
Quick little hands worked away. Tying this together, adding another fork or two. She was another Dr. Frankenstein; making something out of practically nothing. She was making her own monster- now it might not have been as cool or as useful as Frankenstein's, but it was just as ugly.- Like someone could get tetanus just by looking at it. She was unsure if the trap was going to work, but it made her feel like she was doing something productive. And it gave her time to think. It allowed her to mentally lay out the cards she had been dealt, and figure out the best way to play them. She was so engrossed in what she was doing, that she didn't hear the rustling of bushes behind her.
But when she did hear it, it was too late. She shot up to see what it was- and whatever it was just barreled into her. The impact was hard enough to send her flying backwards. She fell on her back, surprised. The dinner plate-sized trap flung out of her reach. She frantically rolled to the side to get up. It was this simple movement that had saved her from being hit by a spell. The last thing that anyone needed was someone doing a strange jig in the forest. Everything happened so fast- she hardly had any time to react. Her avoiding the attack was simply an accident.
She scuttled backwards into the thick fog that was rolling in. Her attacker was a small figure lined with a halo of silver. A student. But it wasn't one that she knew. "Whoa, there cochise." She remained at a distance, wide and wild eyes watched the other child. Her umbrella, which held her wand; was out of her reach, as was the trap. "I'm going to need you to calm down. I can tell that you're probably ssscared, which means you're vulnerable." She started working her way around the other student. Watching them. Circling them. "I do not intend to hurt you, but I will if you try to harm me again."
Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe....
