“I don’t really know actually.” Charlotte stated. “I’m going for either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Terrance wants to be in Ravenclaw, and honestly I think he would fit right in.” She explained. “How about you?” Reina thought for a moment. “What house would I be in?” She wondered. “I didn’t really think this through very well.” She stated in her mind. “I don’t know. Probably either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. I’m not exactly the bravest person, so probably not Gryffindor. I know I could never be in Slytherin.” She finally answered, being completely honest. She knew she wasn’t brave or cunning. “Why don’t we play a little game, huh? To get to know each other better.” Charlotte said in a very cheerful voice. “Ok....” Reina replies, still unsure of everything around her. “Ok, we’ll each say a little something about ourselves. I’ll go first.”  She explained, beginning her story. Reina listened intently. She had read somewhere that you can learn a lot from a person by how they speak and by how they act. Although first impressions aren’t everything. She’d have to get to know Charlotte before really opening up to her. When Charlotte finished, she turned towards Terrance. “You wanna go next?” She asked. Reina turned to the boy, eager to hear what story he would tell. She listened intently to his story about his puffskein just like she did with Charlotte. Reina’s love for magical creatures had always been strong. It was nice to know that her and Terrance had something in common. Although, she’s never had a pet, she figured a puffskein would make a great one.

Charlotte laughed, imagining the shaved puffskein. Poor little puffskein. She had only seen them in a few books, magazine and pictures but never in real. Surprisingly, she hadn’t seen any in Diagon Alley, but she really intended on doing so next time.

'I actually never saw one of those... I bet he looked ridiculous all shaved and all'she said as she chuckled slightly, tucking her hair behind her ear. She was way less anxious now, and was able to think of something else than all the bad things that could happen. Would this adventure going to all fun, after all? She hoped so... I don’t see why not

All her life, she had only had cats, many cats. Was a puffskein really that different? What was it like to have always been surrounded by magical creatures? She was happy that Terrance had agreed to join this little game, it would've been awkward if he chose to stay silent. Each time Charlotte thought of that shaved creature, she couldn't help but smile. She shifted in her seat to face Reina.

'How about you Reina? Anything you would like to share?' she said shrugging slightly, a warm smile illuminating her soft features.

She thought this train ride was going to be long and uninteresting, but she was actually quite glad to be here now, with people that could maybe be her friends once they reached Hogwarts.

He seemed intrigued though. A muggle born? Someone who had never experienced magic before now? Someone fresh to the world of floo powder, enchanted objects, wands, quill and parchment as a substitute for pencils and erasers? She had probably never even heard that puffskeins existed. Those creatures so curious as they were mischievous scavengers with a tongue that was surprisingly long. Probably longer than their bodies even.

He could learn a lot from her being a muggle born and she could learn a lot from him being a pure blooded wizard. He felt bad though. This girl didn’t have her parents. But she spent her life in her aunt’s library surrounded by books.

He didn’t quite know what to say so he took a moment. He had to take this delicately. He knew how fragile people could be even if he hadn’t entirely wrapped his head around death as a subject yet. He was 11 years old. The most death that he had ever experienced was tragic loss of his pet custard who he didn’t even know was truly dead or not.

“I’m sorry, I know you probably get told that a lot but I’m sorry. But I can maybe teach you what I know. What was it like being a muggle?” Trying to get the topic off of something sad as soon as he possibly could. He never liked talking about it even if it was a reality one day he would probably get rather close to.

What was it like growing up with magic? There was no many things he could tell her about what it was like growing up. The stories of magical pets that he’s wanted and owned, experiencing his first time getting a bad Bertie’s bots flavoured beans flavour, the experience of travelling by floo powder. He could tell her so much about the wizarding world since it was all he knew.

“Amazing, Though I don’t really know anything different. Muggles don’t really get to see all of the magical creatures, magic wands, enchanted items. Like my mom would know exactly when we were home because she had a clock that would tell her where we were and what we were doing. So she would know when we were somewhere other than where she told us.”

Like that time he said he was going somewhere and got lost with his father in Diagon Alley and she was able to figure out they were lost and come find them. It was actually pretty handy and saved his mother a ton of worrying.

“Though I’m sure you’ve heard of the owl system before. It’s how we send letters to people. That’s how you got your letter isn’t it?”

It was the perfect system.

Reina immediately became intrigued by the wizarding world. What kinds of magical creatures were there? How could a clock track a family? She had already known about the owl system from when she got her letter to Hogwarts, but how would they train the owl to do that? Thoughts and questions of all sorts flooded Reina’s thoughts. “Yeah, I got my letter by owl.” She answered, moving a loose piece of hair out of her face. “I was working in the library one day when I saw a snowy owl sitting outside my window with a letter.” She explained. She remembered that day like it was yesterday. She remembered seeing her name on the letter in the owl’s beak. She remembered her aunt’s worried and frustrated voice when she let the owl in. Reina remembered everything so clearly. She remembered the look of shock on her aunt’s face when Reina showed her the letter to Hogwarts. The next thing she remembered was her aunt showing her the letters from her father, talking about Reina’s mother being a witch and going to a school of magic in Scotland. Her aunt had mentioned that she had never believed it until Reina received her letter. The memory was still so clear in her mind.

Charlotte smiled sadly hearing Reina said she had never known her parents. She couldn't even imagine what her life would've been without them. Not really knowing what to do, she passed her arm behind her bag, giving her a sort of side-hug.
'I'm so sorry...'

Terrance, who must've been a little uncomfortable, rapidly changed the subject and started asking once more about the muggle world. She found his curiousness very amusing and smiled. Reina started talking about her muggle life, and Terrance then talked about his life as a wizard.

'I was working in the library one day when I saw a snowy owl sitting outside my window with a letter.'
She looked at Reina as she talked about this magical day, a twinkle in her eye.

'That must've been pretty bizarre for you at first. I can't even imagine how it must be like to discover that magic exists, let alone the fact that you're a witch!'

Talking about that, she remembered of the day her letter arrived. She was in the middle of drawing, lying on the floor. It had been a pretty boring and uneventful day, until she heard a loud bang on her window. Because the sun shone directly into her eyes, she had to stand up and put her hand over her eyes to see what had made this noise. As she looked out her window, she froze in place.
She frowned as she saw an owl, sitting on her window sill, looking her in the eyes, his eyes wide open. He sat there for about a minute, staring at her. Suddenly, the owl banged his beak on the window, still looking her straight in the eye.

Charlotte was talking the whole time, telling her story.

'Now, keep in mind my window was only half-closed, so he could've easily flown in... So I finally walked towards him, and took the letter from his beak, a little freaked out. And he just stood there, looking at me wide-eyed as I read my letter. It was... a little awkward.' she chuckled slightly, remembering this weird owl.

'It really was an emotional rollercoaster... How about you Terrance ? When did you recieve your letter?'

Listening to their stories with a smile on his face made him feel warm. These people made him feel included and like he belonged for one of the first times in what felt like forever. It wasn’t something he took lightly. He took every friendship he made with anyone extremely carefully. It was always slow moving with him. But this? He was made to get out of his comfort zone. Not made per say he was definitely pushing himself to talk to the both of them.

It was interesting hearing about the owl, seeming to check if she was actually going to open her letter and watching her as though it knew it was among a new wizard. He wished he had received that same treatment though his parents had gotten to the letter before he could get a chance.

He explained this seemingly upset that he in fact hadn’t been actually able to read the letter himself first. “It doesn’t really feel as much as your special moment when your parents have already read the letter and are congratulating you as they hand you a letter saying that you’re going to Hogwarts. Though at least it was the summer when it happened.”

Though they still had a big huge celebration in his honour with his favourite food and such. At least that made up for it.

Well, Charlotte would've definitely been upset if her parents had opened her letter before her. She couldn't really tell if Terrance was that upset about it, so she decided to ask.
'Were you mad or upset your parents opened it before you were even there?' she said, raising her eyebrows.

She felt quite lucky that weird owl came straight to her window and not to her doorstep, although she didn't think they would've opened it. Unlike Terrance, she didn't really have much of a celebration after words. Her dad called all his family and mom sent an owl to her grand-mother, who replied she was disappointed she didn't choose to come study in France. After that, they had dinner at a restaurent they had always wanted to go to. She smiled as she remembered the jealous look on her sisters' faces and herself teasing them all evening. She wondered if Reina had had some sort of celebration.

'Reina, did you have a little... party? When you knew you were going to Hogwarts ?' she asked, thinking she already knew the answer to that. The girl didn't seem the type to be fond of parties, and Charlotte would totally understand that.

“Reina, did you have a little... party? When you found out you were going to Hogwarts?” Charlotte asked. Reina just shook her head. “No, I spent the rest of the night reading my dad’s letters to my aunt. Hoping to find out what to expect from a world full of magic.” She explained. Reina was never much of a party person. “The closest I got to a party was my aunt getting us a box of macaroons to split when I found out I was going to Hogwarts. I don’t mind having an occasional dessert, but I don’t go out and party much.” Reina stated. It was hard to have a party when you don’t know very many people, even in your own family. As a matter of fact, she didn’t get out much at all. The only times she’s gone out in public we’re when her aunt would go for walks in the vast countryside surrounding London. Reina would go with her and just enjoy nature and the feeling of peace and security it gave her. She remembered some of the trails she and her aunt would walk on. She remembered walking through forests and fields with only the sounds of her own footsteps and the birds chirping in the surrounding trees. It was one of the few things that brought her peace.

The fact that she didn’t go out to parties much was relatable to him. Like those times he sometimes would fake being sick so he didn’t have to go family parties. Though reunions he was made to go to and christmases dressed in a suit. That was as far as parties had ever gone for him and he didn’t want parties to go any other way. At least that’s what he thought coming into Hogwarts.

Eventually maybe, now, there was probably absolutely no chance of that happening. He was fine with this small group of people he thought he could eventually call his friends. People that would make him feel less alone in the world. He didn’t need parties filled with people and new noises and constant yelling over music. He didn’t need the stress of people putting tainted punch anywhere. Though he would appreciate that more as he got a little older, wiser.

“Macaroons are pretty good. Even if your aunt didn’t go all out on a party once she figured out that she had a witch in the family. But I was pretty upset. But I think I understand now, usually mail is only addressed to them and they probably wanted to give me a surprise. I can’t think they would intend to ruin the moment.”
