Summer Missives

July 14, 2024Greetings From My Treehouse @Simon Kincaid
Mo chridhe, (my heart)
I know why letters are sometimes called missives. The first four letters say it all. I know you know it, because I know you feel it too, but I miss you like crazy. I have said it before, but if we lived 200 years ago and you had a profession that took you away from me for months, or Heaven forbid, years at a time, I truly think I would have lost my mind. I am not fully me without you nearby. Like the cheesy line says from some old Tom Cruise movie that I am sure Aunt Maggie has seen a million times over, "You complete me." There is a Simon-shaped hole in my life right now, and I am NOT liking it, nothankyouverymuch.
Speaking of Aunt Maggie, I have been keeping in touch with her daily because I know your cell phone reception, if there is such a thing at Hawthorne Castle, is probably iffy at best. She and Mark are fine, and she said that they have made nice progress on the cleanup. Insurance and all kinds of bureaucratic red tape seem to be the bane of their existence right now, but that is to be expected, I suppose. She told me to tell you that she misses her "Sojourner Simon" and they are doing everything possible to get you back home as soon as possible. She also said that Rascal is doing great, but I know you knew that would be a given. She even sent me some pics of Mark and Porter. That dog is almost... and I emphasize almost... as cute as Hillary.
As for me, I have been getting reacquainted with Ainsley and Kendric and we have had a few nice excursions just like old times. Hillary has been in absolute Heaven. Oh! Two interesting pieces of news. The first is that Hillary was, of course, thrilled to see me when I got back, but after her excitement died down, she kept sniffing me and looking around expectantly. I know she was looking for you. Daddy did not say a word, at first, but he did arch a brow and gave a teasing, but knowing smile. As he walked away, he simply asked if my scent preference is now - Ea du Simon? "Yes. Yes it is, Daddy. Has been for 2 1/2 years now," and then I thought about the t-shirts and hoodies you left me with before we got off the Hogwarts Express, so I ran upstairs to my "Shrimon" and put on your Jesus Freak tee and breathed you in deeply. It helps, but having you holding me would be so much better.
The second bit of news is actually news. You may consider what passed for the first bit of news above on the level of the National Enquirer. This, however, will make you terrifically happy. Ainsley and Kendric told me my second day back that they have been a couple since Spring Break! She is over the moon happy. She looks at him like I think I must look at you. It looks good on her. I cannot say what it looks like on me, but I can say that it feels beyond sublime. Kendric looks happy, too, and all feels right in the world on that front. Maybe I am biased, because I do know what love looks like on your face, so I feel like I have gotten the better deal here without question.
Mom is calling me in to help get ready for dinner, so I need to wrap this up. I love you, Simon. I could fill a book with nothing but the "I love yous" I have missed being able to whisper to you since we have been apart, but I know you can feel them across the miles, even in that rose festooned castle of Adrian's. Nights are the hardest for me. I miss our marathon chats over the Hogwarts Telecommunication Network. I am writing to you from my treehouse right now, by the way, and am remembering how you snuck out of your room and played your lullaby over the tin can line for me the first night you were here. It seems so long ago, and yet we had not even been together two weeks, officially at the time. I was so crazy about you back then, and I am even more crazy about you now. It rocks me sometimes to know that I fall even more in love with you each day and find that there is still is so much farther yet to fall. Here is to hoping I never land.
Be safe, my love. I know this is the chance you have wanted to get to know your father.... yes, I wrote "father"... but I know what I know, and you do need to be careful. Be good to Archimedes. Without him, making contact with you would be impossible and I would be insane already.
Write soon and tell me everything. No detail is too small, as you know. I love you. I adore you. I miss you, and each night I pray that if I do sleep, I dream of you. The reality of you is far better than even my dreams, and those are pretty spectacular. Maybe we could try to meet in our dreams! That would be awesome.
My hand to your heart,
~your AngelFyre
P.S. No kidding, love. If you sign your letter to me with your last name I swear I will burst into tears!

Summer Missives

Writing letters and missing @AngelFyre McCubbin
My Dearest AngelFyre,
I cannot tell you how thankful I was to hear Archimedes tap at my window here. I knew it was him because his tap is very distinct - he’s got a sort of gentle flair that doesn’t startle someone, but is also persistent and straightforward. He’s here right now while I write this letter because honestly, I haven’t seen a post office - or town for that matter - during my time here and the train station is much too far away to travel and I’m unsure if they even have postal service. He’s being a good boy, waiting patiently for me to finish this letter so he can bring about my response.
I tried to get reception whilst here at my Father’s but there unfortunately seems none to be found. I wandered the rose-adorned corridors on my first and second night and had no signal, and I wandered the grounds and beyond to find none. It has now been too long and my phone has since gone dead and there’s no way of charging it. I suppose I didn’t realize it on my previous trips here and have grown quite accustomed to it from Hogwarts, but there isn’t electricity here. Lighting is done by flames, heat is given through fires in the hearths, and Gideon uses a typewriter to record all his thoughts. So my charger has rested in the bag this entire time, bearing itself useless.
Time seems to slow down here and a minute feels like hours, and hours feel like days.
My days have been spent missing you, wondering about the progress being made with Mark’s restaurant (which I thank you for an update). I have spent some evenings attempting to get more acquainted with my father and the vampires and my days venturing out to see what lays beyond the castle’s grounds. My father seems to be planning something, some kind of event perhaps, and his attention is mostly elsewhere but with your premonition I cannot say that is a bad thing. Gideon enjoys Astronomy and working on one of those really old cool cars when he’s not writing. Samael not only does his terrifying hobby of taxidermy but also tends to the Moonlight Garden in the castle. Lilith doesn’t only collect ancient weaponry, but also enjoys archery. Vanessa has still yet to be seen. Perhaps she isn’t even here anymore. No one talks of her and I’m pretty sure I would have seen her by now.
I’m very curious to know what is being planned, if anything. My father is never this preoccupied and while I don’t know any of them all that well, I think the others are a little preoccupied as well. I suppose I should be grateful for this preoccupation, as it gets focus off of me and allows me time to sulk in not being with you this summer or in direct contact with you, and allows me to explore.
I did venture out from the grounds, even though my father said “you are to stay within the Castle or on the Castle grounds. Do not venture out,” to me upon arrival. He claimed that it was because I was hurt the last time I was here but there seemed to be something in his voice that suggested otherwise. Why is it that the forbidden is always so tempting?
I retraced my steps from what I can remember from my journey back to the castle from my accident in hopes of finding Clara again. Maybe it was to prove that she really did exist because it seems so odd that such a person existed - that a girl near our age could aid me and help me with my injury, and who didn’t speak English although from an English speaking part of the world. Well, I found her again - or rather, she found me. I went back to the coastline where I remember hearing the waves as I drifted in and out of consciousness those first days and she returned. She seems to often refer to me as “Engelis” or something similar and it makes me think of the city in The States called Los Angeles. Maybe she thinks I’m from there for some reason?
We saw some ocean animals and AngelFyre, I saw a REAL dolphin! I’ve never seen one before. There was also a jellyfish and gulls and the beautiful ocean but Clara didn’t like me going near the water. It wasn’t as if she was personally afraid of it, but she was very adamant that I not go near the water and she never went too close to the water. I don’t quite understand the reasoning.
She’s such a fast learner of our language and I’m grateful for that. I’ve practically only learned the word for “water” in her language. I’ve made it my goal to learn more about her - to try and figure out where she moved here from since she’s not a native English speaker. Tomorrow, I’ll try and find her and maybe I can meet her family; her parents.
Please send another letter soon. I’m so grateful you have Arc that can come all this distance so we can share some form of communication. I hate that I cannot initiate contact.
Know that I love you, that you’re in my thoughts and you’re in my prayers and I miss you like crazy.
Counting down the days until I see you again,
Simon
Be kind to one another. (*iNPC is Miles Thatcher)
