A Hindering Hand Closed

Cassie is sitting by a desk near the window. She has just finished her homework and decides to walk around to stretch her body. She is quite happy as she has finished her homework way before her usual time. Everything is going super smoothly.

Just then, she saw a kid sitting next to another desk, staring at her homework. She seems to be stuck, as she is staring at the parchment in front of her. Getting curious, Cassie tiptoed to see what she is doing. She can see that it is a Potions homework, and this girl is a first year, as Cassie has done the same homework last year as well.

'Two ways you can fail to make a potion' is the question. Suddenly feeling like showing off her knowledge, Cassie walks to the opposite of the girls seat, which is now empty, and starts speaking. She is speaking quite fast.

'Hello, I'm Cassie. I see you are stuck with the Potions Homework right? I can help you. Maybe you can put in the wrong ingredient, many ingredients look alike, I think you've learnt a lot of similar herbs in Herboology. Maybe you can make an error while brewing the potion. Some of them require you to wave your wand clockwise, maybe you have waved it counter-clockwise. Maybe you have added the ingredients wrongly, it may ask you to slice an ingredient but you squashed it. Or you've heated the potion in the wrong period of time. There's so much more, kid. I can't see why you're stuck.'

"Hello, I'm Cassie." Jess looked up to find a second year girl peering down at her, smiling.
"I see you're stuck with the Potions Homework right? I can help you.", the girl stated confidently. Jess breathed a sigh of relief - finally, something good is happening! She removed her hand from the top of her piece of parchment so that Cassie could see her work more clearly. After a short inspection, she began to list suggestions... Quite speedily.
"Maybe you can put in the wrong ingredient, many ingredients look alike, I think you've learnt a lot of similar herbs in Herbology." Jess scrabbled to write down Cassie's ideas, which she continued to reel off incredibly quickly, and in an increasingly loud voice.
"Maybe you can make an error while brewing the potion. Some of them require you to wave your wand clockwise, maybe you have waved it counter-clockwise." At this point, Cassie was speaking at the top of her voice and at such a speed that Jess could no longer write anything down. Frustrated, but still grateful, Jess hurriedly gestured for Cassie to be quiet, putting a finger to her lips with an apologetic look.
With seemingly no regard for Jess' wordless warning, Cassie continued, "Maybe you have added the ingredients wrongly, it may ask you to slice an ingredient but you squashed it. Or you've heated the potion in the wrong period of time."
Why is she ignoring me?, Jess wondered, frustrated. It's like she's saying this all for her own benefit!
"There's so much more, kid. I can't see why you're stuck." That was the breaking point.
“Shut up!”, Jess whispered harshly, standing up from her seat and facing Cassie. “You’ll get us both in detention, speaking that loud! What’s the point of saying you’ll help if you don’t give me time to write anything down, and you belittle me along the way-?”
Just at that moment, Jess heard another set of footsteps approaching them, and this time, there was no mistaking the authority in their pace…

Today was actually surprisingly normal of a day, at least for Mateo. He had a fair few students studying in the Library, but there was general low-level chatter, and not too many checking out books, which gave him plenty of time to finish up some of his more neglected projects, such as writing his letters to home.

However, some raised voices soon caught his attention from the back, and hoping it wasn't about to turn into a fight, he felt that he had to go and see what was happening, out of good conscience. As he made his way there, he discovered another pair of students, however this seemed to be less collaborative of an exchange than some of the others.

"Hello," he said somewhat quietly, not wanting to embarrass them in front of their peers. "You are not in trouble, however I do need to ask that you keep your voices lowered, please. As you can see, there are several students that are studying and using the Library today, and I would like to keep the environment a calm place for them to be able to do so. I hope whatever... discussion you have been having can resolve itself without too much arguing."

When he was satisfied they had understood the message, he smiled once more before returning to his desk.

"Hello," said a tall man as he approached their table. This must be the librarian! Jess wanted to groan from her misfortune - of course she had to be caught, the only time she had ever broken a rule! Now she'd be kicked out the library, and forced to work in the common room until the end of her school days!

What?! That's it?! Jess could have laughed from the sudden change of events. It seemed the fates had decided that her previous perfect record and reputation didn't deserve to be smeared by an oblivious second year who had unknowingly nearly ruined her life. As the librarian smiled and walked away, Jess couldn't help but wonder just how she had made it out of this exchange alive.

Jess turned back to Cassie, who was still standing there, and considered her options. If she got really angry, then the librarian would return, and this time there would be no second chances. But I'm so angry! She nearly got me a detention, Jess argued with herself. Ultimately, though, she decided to whisper, in the fiercest voice that the still particularly short 12 year old could muster, "Please don't try to help me ever again. If I need any advice, I won't be asking you. You can find someone else to get into trouble, just leave me out of it. Got it?"

With a cold glare, Jess packed her books into her satchel and started to leave the library. Jess was hardly the type to get angry with people, but for once, she was satisfied that she had done the right thing.
