It was always exciting being asked to oversee the duelling over summer camp. Once you'd been in the duelling team for a certain amount of time, you began to know what to expect from the people you whose duels you witnessed, as there was not much variation in who participated in the sport and, everyone being part of the same four teams, and going to the same school, they tended to follow similar strategies. But in the summer games, where the participants could come from not just different schools but different countries, you never knew what to expect. At least, that was Julian's hope, one that had been bolstered by a book he'd picked up on the history of wizard duelling around the world.
The only downside was having to stand up on the piste, reading off names from his list, constantly second-guessing whether he was pronouncing the names correctly. As the duellists assigned to him started to gather, he wondered whether he should pre-emptively apologise for butchering their names. Although perhaps drawing attention to his pronunciation would not be the wisest course of action. Instead, Julian smiled nervously at the group that had gathered around him and took a little step back, gesturing with his wand.
"Hello, and welcome. If you're all ready, we will be starting off.... now!"

Summer Duels, Match 5
Another summer, but unlike any other, this was his last. In recent years, he had spent his days somewhat floating through classes, failing some, excelling in others. His life outside of school was bland and inside school wasn't that much batter. Thus, when he was able to travel and knock some egotistical intitled brats down a peg with a spell or two, it was quite fun.
Just earlier that morning, he found out his game was being held that day. Lovely. His partner it had indicated was from a different school than his own, Hadashi Hitoshi. Yeah, no. He'd have trouble communicating with his teammate with a tongue twister of a name like that. All Milosh could do was hope that he could make like his surname and "Hit" their opponents.
Making his way down to the field he was instructed to go, he'd note his arrival was one of the first beside some scrawnier, younger looking kid. Hopefully he knew what he was doing as it seemed he was going to judge and moderate their game. Taking his mark on the assigned spot, he'd withdraw his hands from his robe and recall his opponents' names, one was familiar. Cyrus. Hadn't he met him before?
Well, based on how the matches were set up, their experience levels were sure to be similar, so it would be fun, nonetheless. Even if he got beat, the cocky teen would still hold his head high. Defeat wasn't a new thing to him, alas it still always stung. Hopefully today he could end up on top.

Summer Duels, Match 5

In an uncharacteristic denial of Cyrus’s ever-present sunshiney and confident demeanour, the seventeen-year-old New Yorker made his way onto the duelling piste with gangly limbs moving slowly, lanky figure hunched over slightly, usually-fidgety hands hidden in the pocket of his black hoodie, gripping his wand so tightly that, if visible, onlookers would have easily noticed his knuckles whitening.
It was safe to say that Cyrus Alexander Darsel, Lord of Ducks, Portrayer of Happiness… was nervous — and noticeably so.
Blue eyes darted from left to right, for once observing his surroundings instead of allowing him to barrel in blindly, headfirst. One would almost think it was his first official duel.
Not that he would say it out loud, but that was true. It wasn’t for a lack of want, but rather for a prior lack of effort that had culminated in his cramming and training to become a good duellist after his uncle died. And now here he was, ready to prove… what, exactly?
He had to win this, anyway, and that was coming from one of the least ambitious students Ilvermorny had ever produced. But it was his first duel. It was his last duel. It was his only duel. Fate had never spared him a sideways glance, never sought to be kind, and he didn’t believe in any gods, but he hoped the universe had chosen happiness for him today.
He recognised the boy with a similar appearance to him almost immediately, and his already-cautious demeanour soured. Cyrus took his wand out of his pocket and ensured it was in his right hand. He levelled what, for him, counted as a hefty glare at Milosh. He knew that boy had no limits, no regard for others’ comfort — which, he supposed, he had signed up for with duelling. Well, if Milosh was willing to do anything, he most certainly had to be willing to take anything. It was only fair, an eye for an eye.
Glancing at his partner, who admittedly, he didn’t know too well despite their shared attendance at Ilvermorny, Cyrus nodded and offered a careful smile that showed more teeth than usual. 'Let’s win this,' Cyrus said firmly. 'I’m Cyrus, by the way. Soon-to-be seventh year.'

Horned Serpents were known for their mind, for their strategy. It had made Everett a perfect pick as part of a team for the Hexiwizard Tournament, and it now made him a perfect partner for duelling. He was a skilled wizard and had spent the last couple years honing his spellcasting skills, as well as his dodging maneuvers. For a scrawny little teenager, he was a weapon on the field.
When his duelling partner turned to him, he returned the gesture with a bright smile and his honey sweet Southern accent. "Well, nice to meet you Cyrus. Name is Everett but everyone calls me Rett, soon to be sixth year. I have no intention of losing, so let's get this done." He shook the hand firm, once, before releasing. His smile vanished from his face as he turned to the opponents, his green eyes hardening and examining, considering the first spells that would be slung across the field.Action || As Strategized

This would be the last summer he spent with his fellow Mahoutokoro students, but he knew the dueling club was in good hands. Shimizu-kun would take good care of it.
As Hadashi arrived, he took notice of his partner in this duel. To Hadashi's great annoyance, it was not Shimizu-kun. No, it naturally had to be someone from some other school that Hadashi couldn't be bothered to remember in his current mood. The name of his partner was... 'Miroshu Renkuwishtu.' What... on earth was that name. Aside of course from the obvious; ridiculous.
Hadashi decided it hardly mattered. So long as he wasn't dead weight in a duel, he could be named Alahastro Gleauxkqueisha for all he cared.
Upon looking at his opponents as he took position, he found one boy glaring at Milosh-san for reasons he didn't know and was barely curious about. He said his name to his partner: Cyrus. Which meant the other one was Everett. And Everett-kun was apparently staring them down. Hadashi meanwhile, blinked freely. Strained and dry eyes would only lessen his advantage. Staring contests were for amateurs.
He addressed his partner in English, that he had been tirelessly studying since his first visit to Hogwarts.
"Miroshu-san, was it? A pleasure. I am Hadashi. Shall we... How do you say... 'put them in the ground?'"

The duel began in a flurry of spellfire - all the combatants trying to get the upper hand quickly! While one team was from the same school, the other would have to learn to work together with a student from another. No unfamiliarity seemed to hinder them however... The game plan of all the students seemed the same - slow down their opponents to soften them up for next round. And many of them seemed to be masters of spreading their spells.
The MVP of Round 1 just might have been Cyrus - who managed to wrap up BOTH of Milosh and Hadashi in magical cords. They would feel the bonds begin to squeeze tightly around their arms, making spell-casting practically impossible for those that hadn't mastered Wandless Magic. Milosh would have it especially bad, as Everett's spell would get him as well before he could dodge it - his vision darkening, and his arms stuck. Milosh then might not have even seen his OWN spell hit its target.
Milosh and Hadashi both spread their spells at their opponents and the bombardment worked like a charm (no pun intended). While Everett and Cyrus could dodge one spell, they couldn't deal with so many at once...and both would be hit by one spell from each opponent. Milosh managed to slow down Cyrus, and Hadashi managed to blind Everett! It had been a very explosive start, everybody clawing for an advantage...but with all the duelists currently impeded, this was surely going to make for a much more measured Round 2.

Milosh gave a curt nod to his partner, Hadashi, not bothering correcting the pronunciation of his name as well, accents in the foreigners was something his ears got used to over the years. The corner of his lip flicked up as he suggested they put them in the ground. It would be his pleasure. His gaze shifted forwards once more, rooting his feet into position before muttering the Impedimenta cantation at Cyrus. As the burst left his wand tip, his gaze became tunnel visioned as he quickly got slammed to the ground, cord digging into his flesh. A panicked noise escaped him, that was not good!
"Hadahsi-" He'd grunt out, turning his head to see the spell almost ricochet off him and snap onto the other boy, binding him as well. A small string of curse words escaped his lips, thinking that it couldn't have gone any worse. But then a whoosh slapped him across the face and his vision was black. An Obscuro no doubt, but without his hands free to take it off, he was a sitting duck. Man this sucked. An exhale escaped from the man as he tried to control his slight unfortunate predicament, only praying that his and his partner's efforts weren't fully lost having not seen the effect of his or Hadashi's spell. What could they do?

Despite Cyrus’s nerves, his wand performed beautifully. Twin Fulgaris reached out and wrapped cords around both of his and Rett’s opponents, rendering them unable to cast. They could still dodge, Cyrus reasoned. This was a kindness.
'Ooooh, nice spell!' he said to Rett, seeing the boy’s Obscuro.
Sadly, though, it seemed they would get a taste of their own medicine, as multiple spell spreads were aimed for them. Cyrus dodged an Obscuro, thank goodness, but he was hit by the Impedimenta that Everett dodged. It seemed Everett was hit by the Obscuro as well.
'Fiddlesticks,' Cyrus murmured.
At least the other team weren’t any better off. Both were bound, unable to do much of anything. They’d done good work. The outward signs of Cyrus’s nerves began to dissipate, his usual smile reforming upon his lips as he recalled the magic of, well, magic. He wondered what more he would be able to do today; with two consenting opponents, the opportunities were as endless as his imagination.

However, he found as he tested the cords around him that he... was he enjoying this feeling? Wait, what??
No, impossible. ...Surely, impossible.
Hadashi decided that there was time to figure this out later. There was a duel to handle right now, time enough for experimenting later. Though he did wonder whatv it must be like for Miroshu-san; He was blindfolded on top of this...
