Duelling Beta Test Match 4 - Emma vs. Meenauh

This was probably the only proper spell she was going to cast, so she had to take advantage of screams coming from the audience without getting too cocky. Internally smiling, Emma raised her wand and began to run through the list of spells, a bit distracted along the way. It wasn't her arrogance or pride taking over, even though it did have a slight effect on her facial expression. 

Her opponent was only a year younger than her, she hoped there would be no hard feelings either way it went. It still felt a bit wrong to be harming her, but that was the game, right? Without much time to think, she called out her spell and tried her best to avoid the incoming one. With her mind decided, she pointed her wand and vocalized the incantation, "Obscuro!"

The Round

Elaine watched as the Ravenclaw student started to gather moventum. Her Knockback Jinx had had a visible effect on Ms. Silmataurea, who struggled to retaliate after she had been knocked out of balance. The Professor saw her lips move despite being dazed, but what she fought would turn out to be offensive spell was changed to another Disarming Spell in the last second. It died before it was properly cast again, however. Elaine frowned.

Her opponent on the other hand seemed to have gotten past any internal struggle she might have fought. Ms. Hill was in her element, following the picture perfect Knockback Jinx with a Blindfolding Spell. It hit the Gryffindor, kconjuringa black piece of cloth around her eyes.

Elena shifted from one food to the other, the finger of ther right hand closed around the wand that was hidden in the sleeve of her left arm. If the Gryffindor continued strain under the pressure of the duel the Professor might have to interfere to prevent her from taking harm.

Emma to post first.

There was a storm of thought blowing through Emma's head. Empathy, vengeance, arrogance, and remorse for blinding her after an attack. So maybe she was copying a few of her tactics as well, it was a nonverbal way of getting back at her. Yes, she was competing with a first year the same way she would with a second year.

This time she halted a bit before raising her wand, did she really want to do it? Before she had the time to debate with herself, she let her instincts take over and cast the spell, hoping that this time it would succeed with the luck she'd been given. If third time's the charm, her luck was going to vanish. "Incendio Duo!"

And that was it. A spell Meenauh thought she'd never use, failing over and over again. It made her recalling her recent thinking about luck. But, honestly, she just lacked concentration. Twice in a row.  That was almost unforgivable and Meenauh promised herself to train in concentration as much as she possibly could.

The duel seemed almost coming to its end. Her opponent recovered from the initial average performance and put all her magical power into the second half of the duel, overplaying Meenauh. And that was what Meenauh wanted to see: whoever successfully casts most of the spells wins the duel. It didn't matter to her whether the spell would hit or miss. It didn't matter how exhausted one would be in the end. For her, it was the test of casting. Which she was failing profoundly.

And then it all went dark. They switched the roles. Her opponent was successfully casting her own previously used spells against her. Well, that was fair, considering the personal rules of the duel Meenauh set for it before. And it seemed the second year understood them quite fine. As she couldn't possibly see anything, she decided to listen and she heard.

A blindfolded witch set on fire. Classic. Spectacular. Probably painful. As she heard the incantation, she just didn't have even a second for any action and it was not her opponent she fought anymore. It was Meenauh versus the Law of Probability. It didn't matter anymore whether the spell would hit or not. The successful casting mattered. A small personal victory before being set on fire.

In a split second, she raised her wand and, aiming at nothingness, shouted as if for the last time in her life:

"Expelliarmus!"

The Round

As as they had tested each other's strength for the first part of the duel, now the Ravenclaw girl was showing a far better mental state, her spellwork clear and efficient. Miss Silmataurea had fighting spirit, no doubt, but casting with a blindfold over the eyes was reckless. The spell could have hit anyone, though the Gryffindor missed Miss Hill only by a meter or two, and then thankfully was absorbed by one of the walls of the room.

Miss. Hills own however hit her opponent - who was in no state to properly avoid the flames - in the chest. The girl wore layers of cloth that offered some protection, but still the flames were powerful enough to seriously hurt her if left alone.

"Extinguo," Elaine called, wand in hand. Within a second the fire was dosed in fine grey dust, the student looking mostly unharmed. The Professor hurried to her side to check on the girl while she raised one hand towards Miss Hill to signal for her to stop the duel. On closer inspection Miss Silmataurea would only have some singed hair and robes to show for the encounter, but Elaine still attempted to steady her to allow the girl to remove the blindfold.

"This duel is over." She pointed to Miss Hill while the Ravenclaw section of the crowd erupted in cheers. "The winner is Miss Emma Hill from Ravenclaw House."

Meenauh has 10% HP left (and would lose all health next around).
Emma wins.

Meenauh finally felt the stream of magic going through her arm and into the wand. When your visual perception is off, your senses are much sharper, so the spell felt much stronger. Meenauh smiled and nodded to herself that she still had a chance of becoming a strong witch. And that she'll have to train her concentration.

The incoming Incendio worked perfectly and she smelled the flames starting to eat her up alive, but it was quickly extinguished by Professor Pendrast, who announced the end of the duel and helped Meenauh to steady herself and remove the blindfold. Meenauh was ready to surrender herself in case her spell would fail three times in a row, but thanks to Professor she didn't need to it. 

The opponent's name was Emma. Emma Hill of Ravenclaw. Meenauh actually liked her. She was quite a strong witch in her second year and Meenauh's seeming advantage in the first part of the duel was probably caused by nervousness or pure luck. Once Meenauh was steady on her feet, she made a few steps towards the winner of the duel and invited her to a handshake:

"That was pretty spectacular, Emma Hill. And a very deserved victory. Do you mind if we could hang out more and you would maybe help me to practise some spells?" she stood there with her hand stretched forward, actually making a proposition to hang out together.

Emma wasn't surprised her opponent's spell was a success; the third time was always the charm. As soon as her spell had been launched, she scurried out of the way and watched the jet of the red light beam over her head and into the wall. Had it just disappeared, or perhaps phased its way through the wall? It wasn't so much the wall that worried her. As she looked over, she saw the flame she had conjured and lowered her wand to her side as Professor Elaine came to the podium.

After smiling briefly at the crowd, she turned to face her former opponent and greeted her with a handshake. Meenauh. It was a beautiful name that was impossible to forget. It was quite impossible to forget the duel, more or less, the opponent.

"You're a great opponent, Meenauh. Interesting tactic might I say." She laughed and pocketed her wand inside of her robes. "It would be an honor to spend more time with you, and maybe even have a rematch. Legally, of course." She added, smiling.
