An Unexpected Meeting
Books piled high on the edges of a table, nestled among the shelves of the library. They had been moved haphazardly, clearly battling for space, as they perched with open pages and stray scrolls flung perilously close to the edge. The urgent sound of a quill, hastily scribbling down notes, softly hummed. Its song filled the surrounding aisles, although the room had few occupants at the time so it was unlikely to be a bother to anyone.
Moving around the books and peeking between their lazy towers revealed Brooklyn Bryant, a young first year completely absorbed in her work. Unconsciously the girl bit her lip, frowning as her eyes flickered between the splayed out pages and her own scroll. All of this was an attempt to piece together the significance of the Rougarou in magic. She’d been told that this beast’s hair was at her wand’s core, and Brooke wanted desperately to know more about this legendary creature, which she had thought to be a simple myth not too long ago.
The creature’s habits were part of what interested her. Thus the books about magical beasts, and folklore, were added to her small hoard. Volumes about crafting wands were also plentiful among her selected titles. Her impromptu study certainly had revealed some interesting information (discovering the difference between rougarous and werewolves had been at least a two hour wormhole on its own), but even so, Brooke still didn’t feel satisfied.
She stilled her quill, eyebrows drawn tight in thought as she reviewed what she’d written. Sure, she knew facts about the beast, and had found information about how its fur was used in magic, but she still hadn’t figured out the connection between it and herself. Why had she been chosen by its powers? Was its tendency towards dark magic something she should fear? What if she was destined to become a band person and she just didn’t know it yet?
Perhaps books couldn’t hold every answer. With a resigned sigh, Brooke started tidying her stacks, closing covers and straightening the bunch up so she could handle the collection more easily. She was still used to muggle life too, so she gathered the books in her arms without a second thought, and started weaving between the shelves to return them to their rightful places.
