Rose didn't have anything planned for today. It was kind of freeing on these kinds of days, to just decide on a whim what she wanted to do. She supposed, as she got up from eating lunch, that she could take a walk around the castle. She hadn't done that in a while, and the grounds were way too cold for it right now. It would be good to take a break from studying for exams. She decided to take the longer way out of the Great Hall to start her walk, going into the Small Hall. And as she entered, she found someone arguing with... a painting?

It was Jacob Harman. He was tall and dark-haired, a contrast with her shorter frame and longer red curls. She had only had a few shallower exchanges with him, but had always been interested to see if there was more to him. They were both in Gryffindor and in their fifth Year, so both of them had shared classes for as long as she could remember. She admired him- she hadn't been able to really get to know him, but he was brave, and stubborn, and kind. She smiled when he noticed her walking in. "Hi, Jacob! Are you... arguing with a painting?" she asked, a tone of teasing in her voice. She walked closer. "What does he know anyway?" Rose asked. She wasn't sure what Jacob and the painting were talking about, but she did know that in many of her interactions with the paintings around Hogwarts, she had learned to ignore some of them. Some were wise and kind, but some were... not so admirable.

"Oh." Jacob hesitated; what should he say? Should he compliment her on her outfit? What should he do? "Hey, eh, he called me a coward, and I had to, eh, tell him off." He was blushing all the while. He remembered his Third Year at Hogwarts when Rose saw her Boggart. Not belonging was certainly a fear that one of his cousins would understand. But his greatest fear was a Dementor. The Boggart had taken its shape back then. It suggested what he feared the most out of anything in the Wizarding World was fear itself. His mother said it was very wise for him to fear fear itself. The Dementor, which everyone has heard of, drains a person's happy experiences until he is filled with nothing but the worst experiences imaginable. His father had experienced Dementors back in his Third Year at Hogwarts, only it was a real Dementor. Jacob himself had only heard of Dementors from his father. But had never experienced the real thing. The closest thing he had to that was the Boggart. He noticed that they had time to get to know each other, but then the trauma of his father's death came back to him. Thankfully, he had time to process that trauma into something positive. Like his ambition to become an Auror or Dark Wizard Catcher. They are similar to the Muggle Police Service. Now, he was going to discuss each other. He says in a happy tone, "I really like your outfit; it really sets off your eyes." He had grown a bit wiser over the school year and decided that it would be in the school's best interest if he continued to grow wiser as the school year went on. With how good his grades were going, he seemed destined to become an Auror in short order.

The other Gryffindor's reaction to her approaching him was a little strange. He seemed almost... flustered. Maybe he just wasn't expecting to see her, but the blush that crept up his cheeks hinted that it was something else. Rose knew she was pretty- plenty of people had told her so in her years of Hogwarts, especially in the past couple of years as she grew away from a kid and more into a woman. He stumbled over his words just a little bit as he told her that the painting had called him a coward.

What was she thinking? It was just because she was teasing him that he was blushing. Rose pushed her earlier thoughts (which were actually hopes) away- no other reason related to her, just that he had been arguing with a painting. "Well, good on you," she said. "This guy needs people to set him straight sometimes."

"And you're not a coward," she added warmly.

He commented that he liked her outfit, and it was Rose's turn to blush, pink rising on her freckled cheeks as she smiled. It wasn't a shallow comment, either, like that her hair was cool or something, which she also got a lot, since red wasn't the most common color. No, it was thoughtful, not just that he liked her outfit but that it set off her eyes. "Oh- thank you." Rose couldn't exactly reciprocate, since Jacob was just wearing his school robes- there was nothing entirely special about what he was wearing, not that he didn't look good in it. He did, but that was a strange compliment- you look good in your school-issued robes. That just sounded weird.

But not every compliment had to be reciprocated, and so she just accepted it, and decided to keep the conversation going. "So what are you up to today? Any exams you're worried about?" the redhead asked.

Jacob responded immediately, "No, I don't have any exams today. But I am preparing for the O.W.L. Exams that come on at the end of the year." He continued by stating, "In case I missed something, I can simply go back and look up what exactly is missing and begin to practice for the practical exam." He then explained he wanted to become an Auror as his family was almost exclusively Aurors for almost the entire duration of the family's existence, except for his Grandfather, a historian and writer. "My father was an Auror, and I want to become an Auror myself because they only recruit the best." He then said he would continue with Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Potions, his favorite subject at the school, Charms, and Herbology. As he said this, another door opened; it was... an Owl with a letter attached to its leg. It was the new family Owl. Zeus, owned by his mother. He wanted to get an Owl when he entered his Sixth Year at Hogwarts. "It's Zeus, the new family Owl that my Mom got." He then got the letter aloud

Dear Jacob,

Congratulations on getting an Exceeds Expectations in your last Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. I also wanted to add that Kim Aoki seems to be a good person, and I hope you get to hear more from him. Finally, a letter was delivered from your cousin, Amanda, when you got back home. It had some news that you would need to hear. I hope to see you at home on August 12th.

"Cousin Amanda, I haven't seen her since that one time she visited for the summer six years ago. And she is a big cat lover too. And mean one too." Jacob then let out an annoyed sigh and said. "She better not be visiting this summer. I was miserable last time." He then told a story. "One time, her favorite cat was mad at me for chasing my father all around the house. She scratched at anything she could get her claws on. She got me at one point, but Mom healed it in time. And Amanda laughed while she scratched me." He then noted "I think that cat had a behavioral disorder. She did twitch a lot." Jacob then calmed down and said "Anyway want to go meet at the Three Broomsticks later?"

Rose nodded at his reasoning. "It's good to be prepared," she agreed. She hadn't started studying for O.W.L.s yet, taking more of a classic approach to studying and doing it during the spring semester. But she understood his reasoning for starting so early.

He then shared, relating to the exams, that he wanted to be an Auror when he left Hogwarts. Rose nodded- she had thought about being an Auror, a few years back. It sounded rewarding- daring adventures, duels, and capturing dark wizards. Bringing criminals to justice. And there was likely to come at least some level of glory with it, too. But Rose didn't think it was right for her. While she might appreciate the adrenaline some days, the stress could get to her other days and it would probably result in an unhealthy lifestyle. She needed something more down-to-earth, like Magizoology. That's what she was really thinking about. "That is so cool," she said in response. "Good luck, though. You need to pass quite a few exams to be an Auror, right? I believe you can do it, though."

Before Rose could say what she was thinking about being, an owl entered the small hall. Jacob explained his name was Zeus, and that he was his mother's. Rose listened to him as he read the letter and explained about his cousin Amanda. She did note that he knew Kim, who she knew through the dueling club, but she didn't say anything, since Jacob seemed to have quite a lot to say about Amanda. Her eyes widened. "That's awful," she said. It would be a little bit of a funny story, but Jacob seemed annoyed by it, so she didn't try to make light of the situation. Not every cloud has to have a silver lining, after all. "She does sound horrible. I have a cat, too, but she's much better behaved than whatever this cat sounds like. Though I'm sure Amanda's lackadaisical discipline didn't help."

Then, Jacob calmed down a little and asked her if she wanted to go to the Three Broomsticks with him.

The redhead hesitated for only a moment. He could just be being friendly, but a lot of the time, if a boy asked a girl to do something with just the two of them, he was asking her on a date. Was that what just happened or was he just trying to be friendly? Rose had been wanting to know more about Jacob, and even from this interaction, he seemed interesting and kind. Her stomach twisted as she realized that she hoped he was asking her out on a date. She supposed she could ask later. She smiled brightly after just a beat of surprised silence. "I'd love that," she said, and realized she meant it.

Jacob's heart leaped as Rose accepted his invitation. He wasn't expecting this. Little did Jacob and Rose know what this relationship might blossom into; little did they know that even at this moment, some of the other students were about to finish lunch; even then, there might be a chance that the Headmaster may show up out of nowhere and see them together. Even then, Jacob knew this person was special to him, but Jacob had to be prepared for any eventuality and every possible decision she could make. But then again, she would only be cool with him planning for some things. This was an experience. He just needed to wing it. He knew that he had to keep his cool even in this situation. The excitement is palpable, but he keeps it cool and ensures he can be seen as the person he is, even at this level of excitement. "Alright, thank you, I'll meet you there. Hopefully, there won't be any unwanted surprises." Oh, how very wrong he was. Even as they were speaking, they could hear some of the other Gryffindors finishing their lunch. So they had to end the conversation there and then. "Hope to see you there." he said, smiling."
