The Centre Field
This is one of six threads for the Summer Camp 2024 Scavenger Hunt. To view the starting post and the rest of the threads, click here. The Centre Field
Though the Quidditch pitch is currently blanketed in snow and covered with various tents of different themes and appearances, if you stand at Centre Field and close your eyes, you can almost imagine that the whole pitch is empty - that you're standing on this golden-painted circle with nothing but the wind whistling around you, perhaps the ghosts of a few Quidditch players flying by, a Beater readying his bat, a Seeker in pursuit of the Snitch. This is where all matches played here begin, right here in the middle of the field. Almost makes you wish you were playing Quidditch right now, doesn't it?
When you open your eyes, though, you will be greeted by - in addition to the tents and snow - a singular wooden table in front of you, on exactly the centre of the pitch. Three piles sit upon the table - a pile of parsnips, a pile of potatoes, and a pile of carrots. Which will you choose, when you make it to the Centre Field?
------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CLICK THE REDUCIO FOR A REMINDER OF THE SCAVENGER HUNT RULES:Reducio
- Anyone can join the scavenger hunt, but in order to be eligible to win, you must complete all six riddles before the moderation deadline.
- Each player may only join with ONE character (e.g. you may not join with both your Hogwarts character and your iNPC).
- Each riddle has a deadline of 1 week before moderation will occur and the next riddle will be announced. If you miss the deadline, you are welcome to continue posting and following with the Hunt, but that riddle will not count towards your total score even if you get it right (since the answer will have been announced via moderation).
- When posting in the scavenger hunt, please follow all standard H.io rules, including post word minimum of 200 words.
- Each round, you will be given a riddle that will lead you to one of the 6 locations in the Scavenger Hunt as well as describe an item that you need to pick up at that location. Each location will have 3 previously described options. You will then post in the location you believe to be correct (preferably a description of your character arriving), and you will include in this post which of the items you pick up.
- You will receive points for choosing the correct location, and you will receive points for choosing the correct item. Note that you cannot choose the correct item if you choose the wrong location because each location has different items. You only get one post per round, so you cannot change your answer or edit it once posted.
- If you accidentally choose the wrong location in one round, no worries! The next riddle will still appear in your location during moderation even if you picked the wrong location, so you can get back into it and try to get the rest right.
- Items that are picked up are solely for the use of the scavenger hunt and you will not actually receive these items in-game or out-of-game. All "items" will be "returned" at the end of the hunt and you do not get to keep them in-game.
- No hints or help will be given from the moderation team. Do not ask us for hints or help, because you will not get them. Also, please do not share the answers or just copy what other users are doing. It's every user for themselves - and if you copy someone, they could be wrong and then you don't get points either!
- Any cheating, in-character or out-of-character, will result in your immediate disqualification from the hunt. We want this to be a fair and fun game for everyone. This includes any magical violence, physical violence, purposeful dissemination of incorrect answers, etc.
- Moderation will occur once a week, every Sunday, but times may differ week to week due to the moderator's availability. As such, you are strongly encouraged to not wait until the last minute to post your choice of location and item because you may miss the moderation deadline if you do so.
- This event will take place for seven weeks OOC - six weeks of the Hunt and then a final, currently secret portion in the last location. IC, it all takes place on the same day!
You do not need to sign up for this event. You are simply free to join.
The event will begin, OOC, on JUNE 30 and end on AUGUST 18. Moderation will occur every SUNDAY.
However, the event takes place, IC, on JULY 30.
MAKE SURE YOU DON'T POST IN THIS THREAD UNTIL YOU BELIEVE THAT THE CENTRE FIELD IS THE ANSWER TO THE CURRENT RIDDLE! WHEN YOU DO, MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE ONE OF THE THREE ITEMS: PARSNIPS, POTATOES, OR CARROTS!

The Centre Field

Another burst of golden fireworks and I took a breath of relief. No sooner, more scrolls showed up beside the pile of top hats. I pick up one from the stand and start to read.Of Course! Just one last place remained now, the Centre Field! I rush downstairs and into the snow-filled Centre Field, which now had tents around and as well a snow-rink for the camp. In the heart of it all was the same old simple wooden bench. Three piles of vegetables quite graciously pilled up. There were Parsnips, Potatoes and Carrots. You're almost there now, surely,
Just one more place to go.
Head down to where a match starts
With a classic Quaffle throw.
And once you're there you'll find
Piles of vegetable storage -
As for which one will suit you best,
Well, nothing rhymes with orange!
Okay, now...all the choices have been superbly weird and absurd. I could hardly find a connection with any of the items we supposedly chose right, and now I am as confused as I could be. A vegetable out of all things? Then again, scientifically, they are all tubers/root stuff.
I recheck the riddle once more.
Nothing rhymes with orange? Well, while that's true, was something from here supposed to rhyme with orange? Or in general rhyme with something else...hmmm....
So like, potato rhymes with tomato....carrots with parrots.....but parsnips?
Does Parsnip rhyme with anything? Oh, OH! It's not supposed to rhyme with anything! So Parsnips doesn't rhyme with anything, just like that of orange!
Quite relieved to have understood the riddle at all, I head towards the pile of Parsnips and carefully pick a nice and mid-sized parsnip.

Interacting with @ Date - 30/07/24 WC 228/200 Color Legend - Mylo | Thoughts The last one! Mylo was feeling quite confident about this one, and was very curious about how they'd done up until now with the other clues. Watching the fireworks again he picked up the scroll and read the last clue, this one not seeming too difficult once again.
The start of the match was obviously alluding to the centre field, as this was where all the matches started and the quaffle would be thrown into the air to signal the start of the match. So off to that place they went, wondering once again what they would encounter in the three piles there.
Once they had arrived he saw another three piles, just like with all the other locations, one with parsnips, one with potatoes and the last pile with carrots. This clue was a bit more difficult than the others. And it took Mylo a while to think about possible answers, but they settled on the fact that it must have something to do with rhyming, as the clue said that orange rhymes with nothing.
After thinking about it for a bit Mylo came to the answer, and went to pick up a parsnip, stashing it away with the rest of their prizes wondering if they had chosen correctly. Now it was just time to wait for the fireworks and to see how well they had done.

Cass was starting to wonder what spell had been used to make the scrolls keep popping out of nowhere. They were sure that the pile hadn't been there before, and they didn't see any hidden mechanisms. Though they would exactly be hidden if they were obvious. Unless the mystery of the scrolls hid something that could help them towards victory, it would have to wait for another day. They had a scavenger hunt to win! Unrolling a scroll from the top of the pile, their eyes scanned the riddle.
It was getting easier to find out where to go now, simply by the process of elimination. The only location with objects that they hadn't visited yet was the centre field. It also fit perfectly with the first few lines of the riddle: "Head down to where a match starts, With a classic Quaffle throw". When they had made their way across the grass however, it was clear that this riddle wasn't going to be quite as easy for them as the last ones. Was it trying to get them not to pick an orange one? The word rhyme was probably the clue here, though they were far from sure about it. Was it requesting one that did rhyme or didn't rhyme? Cass had never paid much attention to their tutors about that kind of stuff.
Still, how hard could it be? It was as simple as eliminating the options. Parsnips, potatoes or carrots were today's contestants. Personally, Cass hated parsnips. No amount of cooking could make them taste good. Food tastes however were irrelevant for this riddle. What was relevant was rhyming. Carrots could be rhymed with parrot, potatoes could be rhymed with tomatoes, parsnips could be rhymed with... Carsnips? Farsnips? Larsnips? Since none of those were real words, the answer would have to be parsnips. There weren't really any other options, right? Hoping that their rhyming skills were up to scratch, they grabbed one from the top of the pile.

EmmaLee laughed at Stephen's assertion that Minx would not look good in a top hat and his suggestion that she could pull the cat out of one instead. "I suppose so," she said amid the giggles as she pulled the top hat's brim back up to uncover her eyes.
As she did so, she saw that Stephen had bent down to tie his shoe just a moment before the sparks went off for the fifth time. After the scrolls appeared, she walked over and once again retrieved a scroll for both herself and Stephen before walking back and handing him his, now that he was standing upright again.
"Well, there's only one possible place for a Quaffle throw, dear Watson." She said, turning to Stephen with a smirk, reaching up to the brim of her top hat and tipping it to Stephen while it was still on her head. "Onward!" She cheered as she slid her fingers across the brim of the hat and then pointed towards the middle of the field below them with the same arm. With a chuckle, she took the stairs down to the field by hopping down each one with her feet together.
While this was definitely her kind of game, she couldn't remember the last time she had had such a good time with a scavenger hunt. It was so great to solve a "mystery" with a friend again.
As she walked over to the table, she was actually surprised to see carrots, potatoes, and parsnips? Carrots were the given, considering her and Stephen's idea that they were to be making a snowman. Potatoes were not exactly a surprise as there had always been one option at each table that was wildly out of context. But parsnips were weird and made her pause. They're basically a carrot, but they're a winter carrot.
EmmaLee looked around for a moment and saw that others were picking the parsnip over the carrot. Had she missed something in the riddle? Mmmm Nah. She was going to go with her gut. She was sure that the reference to nothing rhyming with orange meant that they should go for the orange thing, which was the carrot.
She picked up one of the carrots and waved it a little as Stephen walked over to her. "You sure you don't need another snack?" She teased with a cheeky smile. "There seems to be more than enough to go around."

Brows rose in surprise as the next set of fireworks burst into life before she'd even fully grasped at the top hat. Question as to whether there was even a proper level of discernment over selection started to raise. But nevertheless, she took grasp of the hat and obtained a scroll for herself, stepping gingerly to the side to unfurl it and consume its contents.
The first stanza was simple enough. Center field was where the players would first gather and the quaffle would be thrown to indicate the start of the game. Fixing her attention back down the steps, she worked her way down the aisle from whence she'd come, retracing the steps she'd initially taken up to the top box to return to the base of the stadium and mosey her way back into the pitch. Even from a distance, she could see the tables arranged, piles of something—she couldn't quite see exactly what from where she was—arranged upon them.
Drawing nearer, it was evident that the poem spoke truly. Vegetables they certainly were. A plethora of potatoes and parsnips and carrots presented themselves for the taking as though waiting for the diligent hands of students to assist in their washing and peeling and chopping for the world's largest stew. Honestly... why were they here? Root vegetables were a far cry from the gentlemanly wear they had previously been collecting. It was almost as if...
Understanding dawned suddenly. This wasn't a scavenger hunt at all. Not really. Was this the last clue, then, she wondered. A glance around the pitch would suggest that this would be a perfect place for a final gathering, with plenty of untouched snow upon a wide and flat open field. The more Evelynn considered the options that had previously been laid out for her, the more her theory seemed to align. She only wished she'd taken a second stick and more than a single button, though she was sure she had a patch somewhere in her satchel from the pirate camp two summers previously.
A hand fished into her satchel. Several moments later, her lips had downturned into a frown, though only for a moment. While she was unable to find the pirate patch, she did happen upon a small moonstone. Its milky surface refracted light with a sort of opalescence as it shifted in her palm, drawing a small but approving smile. After retrieving the other items she had collected, she withdrew her wand. "Colorvaria," she murmured quietly, turning the black button to silver. The scarf was next, its colours changed to silver and navy; then white for the gloves.
Unlike the previous clues, careful consideration was given to the pile of carrots before a selection was made. While a potato would be a bit amusing, and a parsnip would work just as well, carrots were the traditional choice. Not just any carrot would do, however. If she was going to follow through with her notion—if indeed she was correct—she would require a carrot that was neither too small nor too large. Nor could it be curved. Her selection would be that of a handsome, moderately sized carrot with a definitive bump towards its base, though otherwise symmetrical.ACTION: Taking a CARROT

Yes! The last riddle! Emily was definitely nearing victory on the horizon. She glanced at the last riddle, reading and re-reading it intently. The final location was on the tip of her tongue. She was sure of it. Suddenly-
"The Centre Field! Of course!"
Her legs were getting tired with all the enthusiastic running she had been doing all day but with the last hurdle in front of her, Emily was determined to finish with a bang. She took off again and in hardly any time at all she arrived at the Centre Field, the only location on site that she hadn't been to yet.
As she hoped, the table of inconspicuous items appeared in her periphery as she got closer. A trio of carrots, parsnips and potatoes laid before her, Emily regarded her copy of the riddle again.
As for which one will suit you best,
Well, nothing rhymes with orange!
Hmm... A little tricky. Emily crossed of potatoes, hardly seeing any way for it to be fitted as the answer. The battle between parsnips and carrots however had begun. The final line of that riddle was trying to catch her out, she was sure of it.
"So... Does it mean it's not orange? Or does it mean that one of these doesn't rhyme with anything...?"
She was switching eye contact between the carrots and the parsnips. She didn't come this far to get caught out by a riddle, but she would be lying if she said she wasn't stumped either. Boy this was tricky. Both carrots and parsnips rhymed with a variety of words, though carrots was the only one that was orange too. Was that what she was supposed to go with?
It couldn't be that simple...
Assuming syllables required precision, carrots rhymed with a fair few words; parrot, tarot... Parsnips on the other hand... not really. Maybe starship but... Hmm...
Emily was just going to have to roll the dice for this one. Whether her brain was just shutting down after using it for the last several riddles or if it was casually slowing down because she was at the end... It all came down to a hidden gut feeling.
"Parsnip it is..."
If it ended up being a carrot all along, I'll be livid...!

![]() •☽༻¨:·. ──── ₊☽◯☾₊ ──── .·:¨༺☾• It was getting close to the end of this fun scavenger hunt put together by the organizers and Tone had been having fun. If only they could do one of these each day or at least each week! Maybe he'd have to set something like this up back at Mahoutokoro. A grin came to Tone's lips as Zophyr spoke of how she preferred warmer weather. "Mm. Yes, I can see that. I love all types of weather but colder is better for me. I love all the snow." He said, letting his eyes flicker over the winter setup around them. Tone nodded at Zophyr's words. "We should get together after this and spend some time together. Grab some food and chat a little." He told her. As the usual brief display of golden fireworks went off, they each picked up a scroll and unraveled it to read the contents. This time was obvious too, at least for the location. However, the item was much more difficult for this one. "Hm... this could be one of two things. Either it's referring to picking something that doesn't rhyme with anything, or it's referring to the color orange." Tone murmured and pursed his lips together. But which one was it? If he took it literally, it was the non-rhyming. If they were trying to trick them, it would be the color. Tone and Zophyr touched down onto the surface of the Centre Field and walked over to the centre of the pitch where the singular wooden table awaited them. The white haired beater took a look at the three items on the table. Potatoes were out of the question. He was only considering the carrots and the parsnips. It was one of those two. After a few seconds of hesitation, Tone decided upon the parsnips. He would go with the literal, obvious meaning behind the riddle's words. Surely they wouldn't try and trick them, right? Once having made his decision, he waited for the usual display of golden fireworks. Date : July 30th, 2024 Color code : Written|Thought|Said Okay, great! Another scroll! Sere nodded in satisfaction and took another scroll from the pile. This was the sixth riddle. Just before opening the scroll, Sere observed the other campers carrying all the items that came up as the answer from the first to the fifth riddle, then she projected herself who was also wearing some of the random items on her body. We are all looked like the snowmen, but with style. Sere read the riddle in her hand, 'Head down to where a match starts with a classic Quaffle throw.' Oh, this riddle is the last one! That's what informed in the first paragraph.
It's quiet easy. The Quidditch match starts with a Quaffle throw on the Centre Field, so Sere headed down there, walking towards the three piles of vegetables that had been prepared. Sere didn't even notice the pile of vegetables when she walked back and forth to the places that became the answer to the previous riddles. The Gryffindor girl read the second paragraph of the last riddle, 'As for which one will suit you best. Well, nothing rhymes with orange!'
She frowned because of the last sentence which was quite tricky. Nothing rhymes with orange? So, choosing a vegetable that doesn't rhyme with anything? Then this is the only option. She took a parsnip. An odd choice, but it made the most sense since carrot rhymes with parrot and tomato rhymes with tomato.WC : 239/200

Picked the orange carrot at the Centre Field
Interacting: @EmmaLee LeDames

Before they left Stands, he gratefully accepted the scroll Emmalee had handed him and read it over. A smile spread across his face from ear to ear the second his eyes lit on the word "orange". Whatever else might be on the table once they arrived at the next destination, he knew for certain, there'd be carrots. Nice. He had built a snowman once on a winter ski trip to Aspen when he was 6 years old, but snow was not really a thing in Moraga, California in the winter. Rain, yes. Snow, not so much. He was now really looking forward to building another.
When she pronounced that the Centre Field was their next destination, he could find no reason to think otherwise. "Sounds reasonable to me," he stated enthusiastically and began to walk with her to their next destination, pointing out different things he had learned about the stadium as they moved along. His plan was to have her looking anywhere and everywhere but at him and possibly wondering why he was not wearing his top hat, or carrying it.
As they approached the centre field and he saw the table, EmmaLee hurried ahead of him. Even quite a few feet away he could see a large pile of unrhymable orange before him. As he drew closer, he noticed EmmaLee seemed to have paused a bit. He took a more discenring look at the other offerings and saw potatoes and parsnips also on the table. A few people were already around them, and for some reason he could not fathom, most appeared to have parsnips in their hands rather than carrots. He glanced at her and she appeared to be deep in thought for a second, so he glanced back down and read the clue once again. It still led him to a carrot no matter how he sliced, diced, or julienned the clue. When he looked up, a self-assured look was once again gracing her face and she confidently reached for a carrot.
He laughed when she asked asked him about another snack. "I can't say that I'm in need of one, but wanting one is another matter altogether," he replied while reaching for not one, but two carrots. "I can always eat," he grinned, and at that he took a sizeable bite off the narrow end tip of the shortest carrot he had grabbed, and was rewarded immediately with a crunchy snap that only the freshest carrots could provide.
Chewing it quite quickly, in Bugs Bunny style, he looked at her and laughed. "Perhaps I should have been Holmes and you should have been Watson, because then I could have looked at you and said, 'Ehh, what's up, Doc?'"
