And Scout was miserable.
An expression of fury was drawn on her face- had been on her face since the beginning of the day, she was miserable and angry. Asteria was so stupid and didn't know anything about anyone, why was her stupid and perfect cousin the way she was? Man, if Scout could only get one day in her shoes, she'd never have to worry about anything ever again!
Potions was, and had always been, her favorite class. But right now, Scout couldn't even fathom trying to focus on whatever homework or assignment she had been asked to complete because she was so irked. Her lips seemed to be permanently downturned, and she was just downright miserable. Today sucked, as did every day from her and Asteria's fight.
In front of her on the table was some pieces of parchment with instructions written on them, and while Scout had only been half-listening, the students around her were being paired up for some kind of assignment or homework or whichever. Ugh, couldn't she have just skipped today and stayed in her dorm room for the whole time? It'd be so much better than having to talk to someone else when she was in such a moody state.
She peeked down at the assignment, and only got a few words in before annoyances flared up. The assignment wasn't difficult or anything, but did she really have to work on it with someone else? It'd just elongate the process, and Scout could do all of the work by herself. It'd be quicker and she'd probably get a better grade on the thing too. Potions was like the only class she felt she excelled in, getting a poor grade because her partner was too incompetent to listen to instructions would ruin her day even more.
As the list of partners trailed down, a feeling of thankfulness ran through Scout. Fu-Hai was one of the earlier names that should've been called, and when the F's were all called out and her name wasn't in them, she had hoped that meant the professor forgot about her and she could do the work herself.
But then- because her day really couldn't have gotten worse- the name 'Sage Willows' was called alongside Scout, and suddenly she was more annoyed than before. When class was over, Scout was approached by (presumably) Sage Willows, although Scout really couldn't care enough to look up.
"So?"
Reiterating that Scout's terrible presence is active throughout this thread :]

OOC note:
Potions. Sage tolerated it, but it wasn't her strongest class. But she needed it if she ever wanted to be a healer, so she forced herself to pay attention. That didn't mean she wasn't about to fall asleep at any given point.
The family chaos that had occurred over Sage's summer was overwhelming. All the words, both written and spoken, echoed through her head. It was hard to take notes that day, and when she found out it would be a partner work assignment, she sighed.
Sage preferred to work alone; she had a hard time finding people who understood her. But hopefully whoever she ended up with would have actually been paying attention that day. Sage gathered her materials, spilling a bit of ink on her index finger in the process. She tried to wipe it off, but it only smeared. Great.
Sage stood, her class things collected in her arms, and looked around for her partner for the assignment. Scout Fu-Hai, a name she was otherwise unfamiliar with. Sage's eyes landed on a girl with bold short red hair and brown eyes. Sage walked over to her and took the empty seat next to her, dumping her things on the table.
"Hi," she said, glancing at the assignment sheet. "So, do you really understand what we're doing? I wasn't really paying much attention to be honest..."
She read over the paper about what they were meant to do once again. The words seemed to shake, almost, but it was probably just because of her family's voices in her head. Sage set it down, noticing that Scout still hadn't looked up and had only said one word.
"Um, so are you ready to get started on the project?"

september 13th, 2024 friday, end of classwc: 300 dhampir | sensitive to sunlightinteracting with: @Sage Willows mentioning: asteria + emily and caseyEven though Scout knew that she was being unreasonable, she couldn't convince herself to put on a smile (or even act decent). Maybe it had something to do with her own poor self-image, but Asteria didn't know anything about not being perfect, so why in the world did she have to bring up Scout's own reflection? And now Scout was stuck in Potions being forced to partner up with someone who she could care less about!
"Did you even listen to the teacher?"
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black- Scout herself hadn't listened to a word that was being said the entire lesson, but at least she had the brain capacity to remember some of what was being taught. "We're supposed to go over the brewing process of the Sleeping Draught and Drowsiness Drought." Er, probably... she had just glanced up at the board. Surely there was no way they'd be making the actual potions today, it was only the second week back!
She wasn't some Potions genius, even if she did enjoy watching her mother work, and even if Potions was her favorite class. Scout knew she was nowhere near prepared enough to start brewing so early in the year, coupled with that and her annoyed attitude and the fact that she didn't want to be in class in the first place- oof, a headache was starting to form in the back of her mind.
"Can't you do this by yourself?" Her voice snapped when Sage spoke, "You're not a baby, right? Do you really need me to help you with this?"
This scenario was reminding her of how unreasonably angry she had gotten with Emily's Ilvermorny friend, though the difference between then and now is that Scout made it a note in her mind to keep her wand hidden deep in her bag. Can't risk casting a spell in the middle of class- that'd definitely have some repercussions she wouldn't want to deal with.

Sage slowly began to piece together the assignment between looking at the board and what everyone else was doing. "Okay, so what I think we need to do-" Before she could finish, Scout interrupted her.
She tried cutting in to explain herself, but Scout continued by bitterly informing her about what potion they were supposed to review and snapping at her about not paying attention. Sage raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms. Really?
"Well it's not like you seem to be paying much attention either. You're just sitting there not even bothering to help!" Sage couldn't help but raise her voice slightly. "I need a decent grade in this class, so I'm doing what I can. I'd appreciate it if you bothered to help."
It was true, Sage would need good grades in Potions if she wanted to become a healer someday. She was no Ravenclaw, but she cared enough to pay attention, usually, to her schoolwork. This was one of those days when that was harder.
"Yeah, theoretically I could do this by myself. But what's that saying about you? That you're too immature to put your ego and snottiness aside for one class to help? Or that you aren't capable of understanding the assignment?"
Normally Sage didn't go around attacking people with her words; she'd experienced enough of that herself. But Scout Fu-Hai was getting on her nerves, and Sage did not like this girl one bit so far.
"If you're just going to sit there, at least do me a favor and get out of my way."
She turned from Scout to focus on the assignment sheet. If this girl was going to be a brat, she could at least get out of Sage's way so she could work. At that point, Sage was not a fan of Scout, and had no interest in being near her again.

Scout was being unreasonable. She wanted to punch, kick, scream, do anything to make her anger feel justified. But she didn't, her eyes trained on Sage's for a moment before Scout came to a conclusion. If fighting was the only way she could calm down, then she'd do it. Just not with anyone else, so she shoved her papers into her bag and tossed it over her shoulder, a nasty glare in her eyes. While you probably needed a partner for this assignment, Scout could care less.
Class was over anyway, she didn't have to stay. She'd just do the paper by herself when she was less angry about everything that was going on. Her bitter memories clinging to her brain like how her hand had clung so tightly to her wand when she hit Casey, the teeth in her mouth felt sharp and pointy and her nails had gone so long without being clipped that when her hands balled into a fist, she could feel blood starting to prick in her palm.
There was a part of Scout that wanted to stay and spit more poisonous words at Sage, but there was no reason, and she was losing her energy. Scout wasn't sure when her misery had delved into anger, or when her anger had turned back into sorrow. First it was about Asteria and then it was about her fight with Casey and then it was because of her self-hatred, what was it now? She had started a shouting match with some Hufflepuff girl in her Potions class, was that the reasoning behind her feelings?
"Good luck doing this on your own, 傻子." fool
'Does that make you feel better, little monster?'
The voice she was becoming oh-so familiar with danced in her head as she angrily paced down the halls. Did insulting someone and yelling at them and being generally a shitty person make her feel better about her feelings? No, obviously not! Nothing would make her feel better right now! No Emily-consultation, no hanging out with her other friends, not talking to her dad, nothing! She could beat herself up and fight with herself all she wanted, but what was done was done and she had been a douche for no reason and-
"Damnit!"
What was she going to do? How was she going to do anything? Every minute she was pissed or annoyed or upset or depressed, there was nothing she could do because she was too busy wallowing in her own self-pity or self-hatred! Maybe once she could cool down she could apologize but... apologies were not in her brain right now! The only thing she could think of was herself and the voice in her head telling her she was being stupid.
Who could she even talk to? Emily? No, definitely not. Her parents? Absolutely not! That boy she had met a few months back who she was sure knew of her dhampirism who actually didn't know anything who told her that if she needed someone to talk to it could be him? How would she even explain the situation to him?
Whatever, she had to try.

wc- 240Sage had given up that point. She kept her head down and scratched in a few answers on the worksheet. God, this Scout girl was no help at all. Sage blinked back hot tears of anger. She hated it when people acted like that. She could feel the weight falling onto her shoulders. She'd probably end up with loads more homework throughout the day. That would be fun to stress over in her dorm.
Sage crumbled up the paper and tucked it into her robe. She'd have to deal with it later. All because Scout was too self-centered to help on a project. The ink she got on her hands smeared over her paper. Scout called her something in a language she couldn't understand. That broke her.
"Just shut up! You think you're so much better, but you're just acting like a child."
Sage clenched her fists and squeezed her eyes shut. She needed to get out of there before she slipped into a head space she couldn't get out of. She could already feel the darkness enveloping her.
The second year was already going to suck. She was making more enemies than she'd like... and it all started with that letter. Yeah, that letter was going to make her the person she never wanted to be.
She stormed out of the room on the way to her next class. Scout had gotten herself an enemy she didn't want to have.end of thread
