Levelling Up In the Friendship with @Scout Fu-Hai
Speech: #cfa120
Thoughts: Italics
Excellent. That was exactly the answer Emily was looking for. Scout wasn't a magnet for trouble but Emily always had the sneaky suspicion that she was no stranger to digging for some, whether deliberately or not was a whole different debate. It wasn't just for the sake of trouble either that she wanted Scout to be safe in but recognising her small insecurity over being a dhampir as well - if Scout bit someone no matter what circumstance it was in, Emily couldn't help but imagine how Scout would feel if that happened.

On the topic of international students, Emily concurred with a nod. "We'll unequivocally meet some during our time here. There are certainly a lot of students from outside of Hogwarts joining us to not bump into at least one...!" Still, the fact that Casey was somehow a noticeably dark spot in the crowd of overseas students was what occupied Emily's thoughts on the notion the most. A true testament to the hot water that was currently between them.

But distracting her thoughts was the fact that Scout accepted her meatball peace offering, to which Emily grinned happily. Listening to Scout talking about her folks was also a nice change in the conversation. Whenever someone talked about their family, it always made Emily smile. "At least it makes you feel more at home! If "Auntie" saw my dinner plate she would most likely make her joke." She imitated "Auntie's" voice. "Would you like some meatballs with your cheese?" She couldn't help the nostalgic laugh that followed.

However, halfway through the conversation, Scout brought up something that made Emily's eyes sparkle; a chance to meet her family during the next school break. To that, Emily sprung with enthusiasm at the idea, not just for the chance to learn more about Scout's special heritage, but to get to know her as the best buddy she was to her.

"That would be so cool! And you should totally come round to my place too! Auntie would love you! Dhampir or not, she'd be thrilled to have you stay over!"

Emily was enjoying listening to the simple life her parents seemed to live, which was really saying something.

"Sounds like your parents have pretty meaningful hobbies," she complimented. "My mother is a fashion designer. I only see her once a week, if that, because she's always travelling to meet up with models and stuff. My dad's a businessman, as conventional as a job as he could've gotten." Emily gave off an eye-roll full of sarcasm before her tone turned slightly defeatist. "I only see him twice a year. Heaven knows what he does at work when he travels."

Emily made a noise that could only be described as a horse sigh. "My parents seem more married to their work than to each other, let alone remember the fact that they have a daughter."

"You're welcome!" Lemmy replied to Alyssea from the ice below. The fall had scared him a bit because it was unknown and he was sure there could be some nasty spills on such a hard surface, but now that he had done it once it wasn't quite as scary. He listened closely to her advice and soon enough he would be back on his skates. A bit wobbly, but his confidence was growing. The part Goblin flashed another thumbs up to signify that he was doing just fine.

"Totally unexpected!" Lemmy agreed with Acacia before cracking another brilliant smile. "Oh that's wonderful." The idea of having other students from around the world had excited Lemmy when he had first heard of summer camp and to be meeting one now only added to an already delightful experience. "I am going to be attending Hogwarts in the Fall. I absolutely cannot wait. I've actually met another student from Castelobruxo before. Their name is Ariam Vargas. Super nice person! They came to stay with us over the summer for a weekend. We had a fantastic time!" Lemmy was talking pretty quick as was his habit, but hopefully his excitement was infectious.

His attention was drawn back to Alyssea as she offered him a challenge and a devious smile spread across his lips. He was a wee lad, but he his courage was strong. "Challenge accepted!" Lemmy accepted with glee as he turned his sight towards the nearby tree. "Alright. Smalls steps. Small steps." He repeated the instructions as he began to slowly glide back towards the wall. It was a probably a simple task for many of the others on the ice, but his small success had him swelling with pride. "Look at me go!" Lemmy called back over his shoulder to the other two before his hands found the safety of the wall once more. He'd wait there for the others.

Food, Cookie decorating… those words are somewhat triggering her fight or flight responses. She doesn't like that, she doesn’t like that one bit. The memories that she kept repressed were starting to rush back in. Those spiked drinks, that giant gingerbread man coming into life and quickly smacking her the moment it spotted her, almost knocking the living daylights out of her in one blow. Her hold grew tighter around her satchel’s strap, gaze shifting from it then to Hiro or should she say, Tone as that is what he just told her he prefers to be called.

Tone is right, she was nervous, evident with how she stuttered earlier and couldn’t answer quickly when he told her to grab some food. She wasn’t lying either. She’s not that hungry yet as her appetite had somehow left her or perhaps it was just the sandwiches talking. Those were okay so maybe these foods are too? No, not yet. “Ah, yeah, just not hungry.” She insisted, a nervous chuckle escaping her.

“No. I don’t have anywhere else to go.” she shrugged. “I just came to have a look around. Maybe just a couple of minutes before going back to our tent.” His offer of joining him for decorating cookies was starting to get harder to decline though. He’s a nice guy, he remembered her, heck, he even called out to her. The guilt of just leaving him without repaying those gestures was eating her inside. Raizel is the type of person who can easily feel guilty. “I can probably join you for a short while before I go.” and with that decided, she took a seat just beside him.

The guy reassured her that he was okay- just overwhelmed for a moment. "That's totally understandable- there's so many people here," she said, her words confirmed with a glance around. People from all kinds of schools- Hogwarts, Ilvermorny, Durmstrang, Mahoutokoro, and so many more. Rose even found herself a little overwhelmed, and she hadn't even traveled here from another country. His accent that she pinpointed as German confirmed her suspicions that he was a foreign student, and his words confirmed it even more so a moment later, that he was from Durmstrang.

"Yes, I am," she said in response to his question about what school she was from. She supposed it was obvious with her own accent, mostly English. But his accent reminded her of when she was younger, and her American accent was strong. Growing up with an American mother, she learned her mother's accent, rather than the English one, and her first couple of years at Hogwarts, she received many questions about it. But now, it was only slight, evident in a word or two here and there. Few really questioned it anymore. Her voice was also a little softer than most, giving her a sense of gentility to her.

She accepted his handshake, smiling at the wink and choosing to view it as nothing more than a friendly gesture. "Is it okay if I sit down?" she asked. If he said it was alright, she would sit across from him.

Then, Gellert asked her a question that Rose wasn't quite prepared for- what she wanted to be once she graduated. He explained, in quite fancy words, that he had been more focused on who he wanted to be with than who he wanted to be. Rose had to admit she hadn't given it as much thought as she should have- there were so many career paths to choose from, and so many seemed cool. She knew she wasn't interested in a ministry job or anything like that- she wanted more than a desk job. Something she could do that aligned with her passions.

And no matter how cool it seemed to be a Healer, she couldn't quite bring herself to go on the same career as her mother. It wasn't that she didn't love her mother, but she would feel strange doing the same thing as her when there were so many differences in their personalities, morals, and choices. But then again, maybe Rose would have done the same thing as Pearl if she was put through everything that Pearl was.

He then apologized, saying that was probably too deep for somebody you've just met, but she shook her head, laughing a little. "No, that's fine. I like that question." After just a moment of thinking, she said, "Well, I haven't completely decided yet. I'd love to be a Magizoologist, or a Dragonologist, or something else to do with creatures," she said. "What about you? You don't have any interests?" she asked, and then added, "Other than soulmates?" she added, a teasing note in her voice. She almost called him "lover boy," but didn't want to come off too strong, and since people differed in how much they appreciated teasing or jokes like that.

Walking (or rather skating) on ice was the weirdest feeling. She hadn't done anything quite like it before. Was she getting the hang of it? Slightly. Did she want to go faster? Yes. The answer was always yes. Faster was amazing. Faster right now just meant moving at an ordinary walking pace rather than the shuffle she had been doing before. All the skating she had seen done on TV had fancy jumps and spins and things, but thankfully Alyssea wasn't expecting her to do that yet. Not falling on her but again was more than enough of an expectation. How was everyone making it look so easy?

At least she had picked up a rhythm now, and was able to not stare at her feet the entire time. A very slow rhythm it was, but it was rhythm and that was good enough for her. The two Hogwarts students (or one third year and one future Hogwarts student) had been really nice actually. Despite how obviously horrible all this snow was, she was starting to enjoy camp. "I'm a new second year" she replied "Oh! And I'm a quidditch player. Mostly here for the quidditch actually. Do either of you play any sports? Or have any plans to?. Quidditch was the whole reason she was excited about summer camp. Why else would she have dragged herself away from her lovely home country to this terrible snowy place?

Turn, push, turn, push played on repeat in the background of her mind while she talked. Hearing a familiar name made her lift her head up once again. Was it her friend Ariam that Lemmy was talking about? She didn't know anyone else by the name. "I know an Ariam" she responded "A tentmate and friend of mine actually". She could picture them getting along with Lemmy. In fact, she could picture anyone getting along with Lemmy. His generally tinyness and nice personality made him seem like that kind of person. Speaking of Lemmy, he was getting better at ice skating with her and that was not allowed at all. She skated off after him, if a little slower.

It was slightly scary leaving the safety of the walls, but she had fallen from much higher. Besides, she wasn't just going to get left behind like that (even if Alyssea didn't show any signs of leaving her soon). "Wait up!" she yelled as she slowly made her way towards Lemmy and the tree Alyssea had pointed out.

xxxxxGellert smiled and nodded when Rose replied, "That's totally understandable- there's so many people here." He looked around at the people that had filled the seats and was absorbed by the unique nature of summer camp, the variety of people that could meet and exchange knowledge and cultures excited him. His accent slipped, turning more English than German when he replied as it almost always did when he was talking to other people.

xxxxxHe always had the tendency to accidentally copy the accent of other people when he was not paying attention to what noises his mouth was making. He commented, "It is overwhelming but it is also unique and intriguing. I have been here before, but fascinatingly I never conversed truly with anyone from Hogwarts, only another young man my age from Beauxbatons." When he realised his accidental mistake, he purposefully changed his accent back to his neutral German accent and apologised, "I apologise. I have the tendency to copy the various accents around me and I did not mean to mock you in any sense. Please forgive me if I do that again." Gellert had gained the skill through necessity when interacting with the rich social circles that his family was a part of.

xxxxxHe had learned many languages and he had the knack of copying the native accent easily which made it hard for him to speak with a German accent more so than speaking with a native-like pronunciation. Gellert's overwhelmed mind had calmed down quickly with the friendly interaction, and as always he did love being charming. He flashed a quick smile and answered Rose's request with a gesture to the seat across from him, "Please! Be my guest!" Gellert had been focusing on finding the One for too long, maybe this was a sign, that he should focus on good-natured and lighthearted friendships rather than the deep melodramatic interactions that he seemed to have had, over the past few years.

xxxxxGellert asked another question that was more lighthearted, "On a lighthearted note, what food or drink here seems good to you? Although it looks delectable, I feel I am finding myself craving some home-cooked food rather than the feast in front of me. It is indeed a strange feeling." Gellert was truly intrigued at his own strange longing for German food from his own mother and father. He had not had this longing for a very long time and yet it had returned just as he had decided to confess his love for the albino seeker, yet now he was looking at his actions, and he felt that he was being a melodramatic fool. He questioned completely why he thought he needed to find his One as if it was a mythological soulmate. As he returned back to focusing on the conversation at hand, he smiled widely at the young woman's wish to be working with creatures. The smile turned sheepish when the Hogwarts student teased him, almost like she was calling him lover boy.

xxxxx"That is such an amazing dream, to work with animals all day, sounds very intriguing and enchanting. I hope you are able to achieve that. What marks did you receive on your O.W.L.s I believe you call them. Did you receive a grade high enough on your Care of Magical Creatures exam, I believe that is what the class is called..." He trailed off for a moment realizing that it was impolite to ask about a person's grades so directly, "I apologise, I have made a faux pas once more, I was too direct, asking of your grades so. I was just excited to see if you will be able to pursue your dream career." He answered the teasing the young woman gave him with a "Yes, I am a lover boy" lightheartedly rolling his eyes. "However, my interests are not suitable for polite British society, let us say. I am interested in the Dark Arts as you may call them here. I do not believe it is all evil to practice as you might here."

Being perceptive, it didn't escape his notice how Rai suddenly started to clutch the strap of her satchel there. Something was definitely off about her and it had to do with food or cookies. Because why else would she react in such a manner when the only thing he'd brought up had been one of those two things? The last thing he wanted to do was make her feel uncomfortable with him.

Tone thought for a moment or two but during that time, Rai spoke again saying she could stay there for a short time. Maybe a change of topic would make her feel better? "...you're from Hogwarts right? How are things over there right now? Done anything fun over the past year?" Tone asked with a smile. "I have to admit, I was hoping to see a few people from there.

Red, Freya, Win."
He said and then a sheepish smile came to his lips. "Ah, right. You wouldn't know who they are from the nicknames I use. Ummm. Sophia, Eun-ji and Winnie. You know any of them?" Tone asked, curious. There. A better subject topic. If Rai reacted in the same odd nervous manner as before, maybe he was wrong and her nervousness wasn't related to food.

Or sweets at all. Tone waited to hear what she might have to say.

Cass grinned back at her. "Alright then helpless lady" they said "For the record though, you have met Cass Ito, master pancake thief and ice skater". Were they a master ice skater? Probably not. They knew how to stay upright and go fast, and do a fancy spin thing that they had seen their father do once. Anything else could easily be learned through experience, and a few crashes. But still! They were going to show helpless lady how skating was done. Maybe they could try one of those jumps that fancy professional ice skaters did. There was of course no better place to do such a thing than a ring filled with children with various stages of skating ability.

"New? You must be one of the new first years then" they remarked "Hogwarts perhaps? Ooo what house do you think you will be sorted into?". Perhaps she would be joining them in Slytherin victory. If she found the camp impressive, she would enjoy Hogwarts for sure. School loyalty required them to think that theirs was clearly and without question the best, of course. Though they had heard a rumour that one of the other schools was in a rainforest. Now that make for some interesting things to sneak out at night and see. Not that the castle lacked excitement. And they hadn't even gone near the dungeons or forest yet.

They joined her in grabbing skates, selecting plain dark green ones. Not the flashiest of the options, but they fit perfectly and Cass just had a good feeling about them. Yes, these were the boots that would lead them to skating victory. Or just skating and showing off a bit. It had been a while since they had been out on the ice, but their childhood had been filled with memories of skating on the small pond on the manor grounds that would freeze over during winter. Or rather falling on their but a lot on the small pond that would freeze over during winter. "Oh its on" they said, grinning playfully at the girl.

Their first steps onto the ice were causal, cautious ones (or at least as cautious as Cass got). They glided out and skated in a small circle, getting a feel for the movements once again. Surprisingly, they found that they had missed this. Surely there was some spell to freeze a part of the great lake or something so that they could keep doing this at Hogwarts. Or freeze the floors. Skating to class would be both an epic prank and a really fun thing to do.

Gellert shared that he hadn't talked to anyone from Hogwarts before, only one guy from Beauxbatons. Yes, there were many cultural differences between the schools. She did notice, though, that for a moment he switched from a German accent to an English accent. She furrowed her brow, about to ask him about it- was he mocking her?

But he soon apologized, and Rose smiled at his explanation. She shook her head. "No, don't worry about it. That's a skill, actually. Accents are really fun," she said. It was true- she hadn't really come across an accent she didn't like, and many were funny in her opinion. It was cool, though, how even though so many people around the world spoke English, there were so many ways to pronounce words and so many different words for things. She was sure it was the same in other languages, too, not only English.

The redhead took a seat across from him as he accepted, and he asked about what kind of food looked good. "Well, I didn't have enough hands to get a plate and some hot chocolate, so I might have to go back to that later," she said. "I tried to get a few things I'm not as familiar with, like this sushi, but I also got this mac and cheese that looks delicious," Rose explained, turning her plate to take a look at the different types of food and inwardly debating on what she should start with. Trying the sushi, which was pretty good, she turned her head. "What kind of things do you like to eat at home? Are there German foods you like?"

Rose laughed again. He kept asking questions and then apologizing for it. "You apologize too much," she said, her voice not serious before saying sincerely, "I don't mind your direct questions. I'd rather talk with someone who is genuine than someone who beats around the bush, too concerned on being polite that they don't make real conversation." Plus, it wasn't like any of the questions had exactly been bad. Well, it would have been embarrassing if Rose had to admit she failed the exam, but she didn't. "I got an O for Care of Magical Creatures," she shared, "That stands for Outstanding, the highest you can get," she clarified, hoping he wouldn't think she was bragging. She wasn't- it was just a fact. Rose had always been good at school. She could pay attention in class well, she understood content easily, and she didn't find it overly hard to do her work. Though part of it was her skill, she also worked hard, especially in classes that she didn't understand. The two of them together made her simply a good student.

Seeming to read her mind about what she almost called him, he affirmed he was a lover boy, and then shared his interest in the Dark Arts. She raised her eyebrows, not phased by the information as some might, but intrigued. She supposed that was the Gryffindor in her- her curiosity outweighed any apprehension some might have at the mention of the dark arts. "Really?" she asked, surprised, and then smirked. "Well, my mother didn't really raise me for polite British society anyway," she said, and it was true. Even though her mother came from a pureblood family in the Americas, she definitely kept her rebellious nature, even through the typical strictness of her pureblood parents. Rose and her siblings definitely inherited this or learned it.

Don't get me wrong- Rose could certainly blend into what Gellert called polite British society, smiling and being sweet and, in some cases, faking, but she found she definitely didn't mind Gellert's blunt conversation starters. They were real. Sometimes she couldn't even tell if some too-polite people even liked her, because they wouldn't let her know that if they didn't.

"Is there a profession that involves the dark arts?" she asked.

Why was it so hard to keep herself from acting so weird right now? When was the last time she had felt this nervous? Probably during her first weeks at Hogwarts back when she was just a first year and that’s a long time ago already considering she’s gonna be a third year soon. Perhaps it did traumatize her a bit despite believing that it didn’t affect her that much. She wouldn’t be unnerved by the mere mention of food and cookies if that was indeed the case. Well, she has to stop it or it's just gonna make Tone feel uncomfortable, or worse, make him think that he did something wrong.

Him changing the topic was kind of a relief to her at least. Did he notice how weird she was acting? Well, now that’s embarrassing. “Yeah, I’m from Hogwarts and just the usual.” she shrugged and what she means by that is just the same routine. Nothing much was going on as far as she knows… except that certain stabbing incident that she had heard of last spring ball but that’s not something that she wants to talk about right now. Maybe Tone already heard of it if he was around during that time anyway. “Things are okay, I guess. As for fun things…”

Did she ever do something fun lately? Nothing was coming into mind. The word fun had been gone from her vocabulary for so long now ever since she had dropped her favorite sport. She had done nothing then but just practiced flying or doing some spellworks by the great lake. “I don’t know, I don’t think I’ve done anything fun for quite some time now. Too busy.” she chuckled sheepishly.

The names that he mentioned were unfamiliar, even if he told her their real names. “I don’t think I know any of those that you mentioned or if I did, I might’ve forgotten already. I am bad with names.” she admitted. There is also the fact that she had been less social with all the things going on around her, heck, she barely hangs out with any of her close friends too. “How about you? Any interesting things you’ve encountered or stumbled upon?” Raizel asked him.
