xxxxAdeline was born on the cold winter night of December the 31st, 2008. She had been born a month and a half early, as her original birthdate had been predicted for Valentine's Day in February. Adeline weighed only three pounds at birth but was only required to stay in hospital care for a week and a half.
xxxxAdeline's parents were delighted to have a little girl. They had already had her brother, Stephan, three years earlier, and finally had a girl to complete their family. Adeline's muggle mother, Elise, and her pureblood wizard father, Isaac, had loved each other since middle school. They grew up in the same neighbourhood in Hanover, Germany, and attended the same muggle primary school. However, at the age of thirteen, her father left that neighbourhood to attend Drumstrang Instutitue for the rest of his teenage years. Isaac returned home six years later, where he reconnected with his pre-teen sweetheart, whom he had convinced he had gone away for military education. The pair were married and had their first child by twenty years old.
xxxxTheir first child, Stephan, was a beautiful boy, looking much like his mother with dark blue eyes and honey brown hair. Upon looking at his son, Isaac realized that he should no longer keep his lifelong secret from his wife, especially should his son grow up to be a wizard. Elise took the secret with great surprise and interest, which was much unlike the outcome Isaac had expected. Elise and Isaac continued to raise their son with the hopes that one day he would grow to possess amazing power like his father.
xxxxAdeline was born three years later. She was a wonderful gift to her parents, but like her brother, she was also a huge wakeup call. It was after Adeline's birth that Isaac realized Germany was no place to raise, and Drumstrang was no place to educate his children. Isaac and his family had had many tough intertwinings with dark magic; his father, uncles, and grandfather before him had all been very loyal servants of the Dark Lord, before each serving a stint in Azkaban prison. He came upon the conclusion that Hogwarts was the place he wanted his children to learn, and together Elise and Isaac decided that Newcastle, England was the place they wanted their children to go. At only one year of age, Adeline's family relocated to England, and both of the children were granted dual citizenship.
xxxxGrowing up, life was simple for Adeline. They lived in a modest house, her parents worked modest jobs; her father doubles as both a secretary in the Ministry of Magic and an electrition in the muggle world, and her mother working as a primary school teacher. Together her parents worked to provide the best they could for their children, but never spoiling them.
xxxxStephan's eleventh birthday came and went, and their parents were both slightly disappointed that he would not be carrying on the Wizard in his heritage, but also grateful that he would not have to leave his friends and school for a completely new reality. The same could not be said for Adeline.
xxxxIt was around her ninth birthday when Adeline's magic grew in. Similar to wisdom teeth, it was a messy process. It began with the realization that she could manipulate the lights in their home. She could dim them when she was upset, or flicker them when she got excited. The most notable occasion being when Adeline learned that they would be getting a cat, and accidentally burst all of the lightbulbs on the main floor of their home. The second magical occurrence Adeline began to notice, was the rapid growth of houseplants. Just by blankly staring at them from the kitchen table during long lectures about what she should be doing in school, she could make flowers bloom. She kept this a secret from her parents, convincing them that she was actually just a green thumb and had read up on gardening recently. The dangerous magic began to come around when Adeline was ten. She was sitting under a fort of sheets that she had made in her bedroom on a hot summer day, reading stories and playing with dolls when her older brother came in and threw a basketball onto her fort, collapsing it around her. In a fit of anger, Adeline thrashed around in the sheet, and just as she escaped from the collapsed fort, she set the sheets on fire. Startled, she ran downstairs to get the attention of their father. Isaac ran up the stairs and into the bedroom that was filling with smoke. Shutting the door behind him, he was able to easily extinguish the flames with a water producing charm. Her family had to stay in a hotel for a week while the bedroom and upstairs hallway were repaired. Over the bed of their sleeping children, Elise and Isaac would whisper to each other as to when they needed to tell Adeline the secret. They debated nightly about when, if they should wait until her eleventh birthday, how Adeline would handle the news. The debate ended that Sunday, following the most serious incident.
xxxx Sunday morning in the hotel room, the children had just returned from Sunday school, the parents had just returned from prayer, Adeline and Stephan gathered around the rickety hotel table for Sunday brunch. It was a tradition in their home, a mid-morning meal of french toast, waffles, fruit salad, vanilla ice cream, and all of the chocolate milk they could ever ask for. Typically the siblings never fought during meals, and especially not during Sunday brunch, however, the children were still heated following an incident in the car early that morning. Discussing turned to bickering, and bickering turned into shouting, name calling, and Adeline's least favourite, mocking. She hated it when her brother would imitate her. "Go on you parrot!" She teased, "repeat me some more. Polly want a cracker?" She asked. Her brother mocking her every word in a high-pitched squeaky voice intended to antagonize her. "Parro-"she began to yell, stopping in silence. Her brother who had once sat before her had disappeared into a small burst of yellow sparks. His Sunday best fell to the side of the chair, and there in front of her sat a red parrot.
xxxxHer parents came running from the other room in their hotel, Adeline's shreiks indicating that there was something seriously wrong. Her father was upset, her mother cried. It had been a long time since her father had seen a transfiguration mishap, but he quickly corrected it. Her mother took her brother, who miraculously had no recollection of the incident, outside while Isaac sat with Adeline and explained to her that she was a witch, and that these strange things with the flowers, and fire, and parrots, were the powers that she would learn to use properly next school year, when she would be attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Sure enough, her letter came by owl on the day of her eleventh birthday.
