The Sound of Music
26 November 2021
Colin heard music up ahead. He wondered if he had wandered into the right corridor after all. He sighed. Hogwarts was so big! He found it easy to get lost. It was loads of fun wandering with Liam, and they could literally walk about the school for hours on end and never end up in the same place twice! But this evening he was on his own.
Of course, getting lost was really only ever a problem if he was hungry and couldn't remember the way to the Great Hall!
But today was different, and he wandered with a purpose. He had overheard two older students talking about this place, and now that he feeling much better after the full moon, he wanted to find it. A room where you could go and play music away from dorm mates and the noisy common room. He didn't mind playing outside, but fiddles were temperamental enough without Highland wind and weather ticking them off!
He shifted the battered old wooden box with its dry rotted and broken leather strap, ancient brass fittings and painted cardboard repair patches under his left arm and continued along the corridor. He'd never heard music like it before, but it sounded like someone was playing a fiddle! The music stopped and he heard muffled voices.
Someone was clapping, which meant someone was happy with the music! That was a good sign. He rounded the corner that led to the Rehearsal Room and peeked around the door post. There were already two kids there and they looked to be Colin's own age. He didn't know either one, but the brown haired girl looked like she was going to jab a fellow Slytherin in the nose with her bow. It had a funny shape to it. All squat and snub nosed at the end. He'd seen fiddlers use that kind of bow before, but he'd never seen one up close. He kind of wanted to look at it more closely. He didn't quite know how to react. Should he go in or wait out in the corridor?
Part of him wanted to step in and make something of the way she was pointing her bow; but another part despised Slytherin and so far he hadn't met any Slytherins he could trust. Then again, there were things about him he didn't want anyone to know, regardless of their House.
So Colin just backed away quietly. "Oof," he whispered to himself. He didn't realise there was a queue for this place. But at least he had heard the music and reckoned he had found the right corridor and all. "Well, I reckon I can wait and come back later."
