Dinner, finally. Today was going on forever with everything he had to do. Worst of all History of Magic; nothing against the professor they were nice, but Alan just couldn't deal with the subject. It was just boring and taught no spells. The last spell he had learned there was in first year. The rest was just a lot of theory and Alan could do without that. He knew and respected it was important but couldn't they make the subject more interesting by teaching spells as well?
Alan loved any kind of practical lesson that involved learning about creatures or spells, but in History of Magic that was rather rare sadly. So he was glad the school day was over.
Defeated he reached the Great Hall and after taking a look around he found no one that he knew, at least not from talking directly to them. Or if he did, not often enough to clearly recognize their face at the first glance. So not caring he just walked over to an area and sat down where it was empty. There were a few more empty seats and other seats were already occupied by other children sitting there. A lot of older students as well, which made Alan a bit nervous, however he sat there anyway. He would not have to talk to anyone, so he just began to reach over the table and began by filling some chicken breast filet onto his plate along with some gravy sauce and potatoes. He like always looked approachable, maybe a little shy.

Today was Tiring.@Alan Vanes
And not a little tiring, like when his energy was sapped by sitting in a hard-backed chair, forced to listen to lectures. It was very, very tiring. He could hardly keep his head straight in Potions, fell asleep during History of Magic, and even felt little excitement for flying. It was because of his insomnia night after night. It had eased a bit after confiding about the terrible fires, but still plagued his thoughts.
Still woozy-headed, Isaac rubbed his eyes. The Great Hall seemed very loud and very bright, lights bouncing off of every candle-holder and animal statue around. Glittering beams hung down from the ceiling, pushing back the dark, and above his head was a shifting image of the night sky, filled with stars. Students chattered away, some excited, others concerned, and yet others fighting, and it echoed everywhere.
Even if he didn't get to go to bed that night, lying awake with a full-stomach was always better than an growling one.
The Table was packed and full as always (students could never resist the draw of food), but the ends of the Gryffindor row had a few empty spots. He slid onto the edge of the table, aiming to snatch some quick food.
It was then he noticed the boy sitting right next to him. His neat red hair fell to his ears, and he picked at his plate; rounded emerald eyes looked at the surface with concentration. The kid was an island of quiet in a sea of noise, and he idly wondered why he was alone. The chap seemed nice enough from the looks of it.
There was a cluster of students picking food up from closer to the center of the table, but he realized in frustration that he couldn't reach it well from the edge.
Getting to his knees on the seat, he leaned over, hand darting in to grab a potato.
And that was when it all went wrong.
Dizzily, the boy lost balance, smashing into the table. The redhead's plate and some pumpkin juice flew through the air right at him. Goblets clattered and silverware leaped up. The potatoes were pushed off the table too, rolling onto the floor. And like the klutz of the century, Isaac's face was dunked right into the gravy.
Blast it!
He pulled his dripping face up to see that the other boy was completely soaked. This was bad. This was really, really bad.
"Bloody hell," he said in alarm, "are you okay? D'you need help? I'm sorry-"

[quote]Long story short, Marla's day sucked. She woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Literally. Actually, she didn't even wake up on the bed. She woke up on the cold floor with a headache and a cut on her hand. Great start to the wondrous morning. And potions was dreadful. Just thinking about it made the poor girl's head want to burst!
But at last, it was dinner time. The prime time. The only time that Marla felt hopeful about this day. And so, she put her big-girl pants on (aka her pajamas because...what else), and began to hop down the steps to the great hall, with a book in hand. She was a bit late which was evident by the crowded hall, and only a few seats were open for her. It didn't really matter though, she was just simply going to sit down and read, maybe the occasional chat with the people she was sitting by... Nothing special.
There were a few empty seats near a boy who was quite familiar but she couldn't place her finger on it. But she definitely saw him before. No matter, she could ask him about that later. Right now she wanted to read her book. Marla had found it in the library and read the back, completely captivated by what it was about. She sat down next to the Gryffindor with a small 'hello' and hastily opened the book, beginning to read without even trying to fill up her plate with irresistable wizard-food. Is that what they called it? Sounded cool enough.
And the best thing happened. Marla got into the zone. It felt like she wasn't even in the great hall. More like she was in the sky, floating, the scenes in the book happening before her. A wondrous land of imagination and–
A loud bang, crash, and spilling noise made the poor girl yelp and fall off of the bench, hitting her head on the cold stone floors.
"Bloody–" She began to say, feeling the spot where she hit her head on the ground and immediately retracting her hand. Yikes. At least she didn't break her neck or anything, that would have been awful. She slowly got up and looked horrified as she glanced down to her book. What was once a beautiful piece of literature was now a soggy, smudged inky mess, covered in sugary pumpkin juice. She let out a groan of despair and looked up at an unrecognizable face that was covered in gravy.
"You have got to be kidding..." She whined, picking up the remains of her poor, poor book, and her eyes went wider when it split in half.
Oh no.
Was she going to have to pay for this? She was sure the boy didn't mean to bump into anyone, who wanted to get a gravy facial in front of the whole school? Exactly. No one. That didn't mean she couldn't be upset about it.
"Are you alright?" She asked the gravy-covered boy, biting back a wave of fiery rage as she handed him a napkin. And then she turned to her left and saw the other poor boy, covered in pumpkin juice, just like her book. She went a few seats down and grabbed a random napkin, handing it to the other boy.
"Not a lot, but I hope this gets you both a little cleaner.."

Alan was just about to dig in, knowing that the taste would be marvelous. The gravy would probably melt on his tongue, exploding into the flavor of multiple spices that had been mixed into it. Yes, the boy was hungry, so disappointment crossed over his face, when he heard a crash, followed by a few more sounds of crashing. One of them send Alan's plate flying into his lap- worst of all, food first. The hot gravy was soaked into his pants instantly, burning against his thighs and the potatoes rolled off him and landed, what a shame, on the dirty floor.
A gasp of shock, the of pain left his lips when his clothes made contact with the freshly served food and Alan jumped up from his spot, tumbling over as his legs brushed against the bench, making him fall backwards and over it. 'Ouch', he thought, wincing before he squinted his eyes upwards to look at the culprit. Surprisingly there was no anger in Alan's eyes, merely shock and surprise. I mean who would have guessed such a thing would happen, when he just wanted to eat?
He used his hands as an aid to push himself from the ground, making a face when his fingers nearly slipped away in the gravy that had sprawled over the floor beneath him. This would probably leave stain, but for now Alan raised to his feet and shook his head, cheeks flushed. ”I-It's okay...” he muttered, finding a clean spot on his pants to wipe off his hands there; these pants were useless anyway now.
”What a s-surprise...”, he stuttered in a vain attempt to lift the mood, as he could feel the gazes of thousand people on him, burning through him. Alan and Isaac were probably the focus of attention now, which Alan could have done without. He did not like attention, especially negative one.
A third person got involved, offering handkerchiefs to the both of them, which Alan took with a muttered ”Th-thanks”, as he secretly hoped the day would be over. He began to pat the white silk against his clothes and wiped off remnants of what had landed on his skins. Splotches of the gravy had hit his face and sprinkled his pullover.

Train-girl.@Alan Vanes | @Marla Quinlan
The words flashed through his head, quick as lightning as he looked at the terrible mess. Marla Quinlan, resident redhead and owner of a stormy mind and a fiery temper. She handed him a handkerchief, along with the other redhead who was sadly drenched in gravy too.
Her hand trembled, albeit slightly. He knew what the tiny, almost imperceptible gesture was. What she could hide in her polished features, she could not hide in her metallic eyes, where hints of upset and fury lingered. She was enraged. He cast a look towards her seat to see a book soaked with juice, and he winced."Are you alright?" She asked the gravy-covered boy, biting back a wave of fiery rage as she handed him a napkin.
That looks awful.
Fortunately for him, he wasn't too affected by her anger. Not to the point of fear anyhow.
"Thanks," Isaac said lightly, taking the cloth into his hand and wiping his face down with it.
In truth, he was much more concerned for the other boy, who seemed to wither under the scorching gaze of a thousand eyes. Although he was used to the negative attention, he saw how the other kid shrank into his seat, deeper and deeper, as if he wanted to be invisible.
He slid off the table with a thump, hearing the jingling and clanging of goblets. Fortunately, they stayed stable; he wouldn't want a recurrence of the old incident.”What a s-surprise...” he stuttered, trying to make light of the situation.
"Yeah," he said with a lopsided smile. It threatened to break into a grimace as he realized that he had no clue what to say to this boy, which was abnormal for him. "Sorry again for the trouble. Shouldn't have thought it was a good idea to reach across the table. And sorry for the book," he added with a neutral glance to Quinlan.
Why is it that I always manage to bungle things up?

[quote]In an attempt to ignore the golf-size lump okay, maybe that was dramatic, forming on the back of her head, Marla focused on the other boy who got it way worse than her. While she was practically twitching with fury, the boy just looked mortified. Not a speck of even slight annoyance in his eyes, and damn, he got second-degree gravy burns.
”I-It's okay...” He mumbled in response to Isaacs desperate sounding apology. While the familiar looking Gryffindor got the brunt of the damage, she'd gladly switch places with him if it meant getting her book back. Oh, how would she tell her uncle that she was in debt at only twelve years old? Well, the book was a short one, it couldn't cost that much money. And if worst came to worst, then she could always sneak into the family vault... Then again, that was thinking wayyy ahead. It wouldn't come to that. Right?
As she handed both the familiar boy and Isaac napkins, they mumbled their thanks and began to wipe themselves off. It wasn't doing much, not surprisingly. How was a tiny square of paper going to help someone practically submerged in liquid animal fat? Ew.
The two spent a few more minutes just cleaning up, and witnesses began to lose interest in the situation, resuming their casual conversations while eating, with the occasional glance back to the mess out of curiosity. While they were drying off, Marla couldn't care less about the state of her robes, shoes, or anything else except her book. She was currently trying to salvage it, but not even reparo could mend this one. Even if it did, the ink was smudged and it would be unreadable. She sighed in defeat, putting the soggy mess of literature down and plopped onto the bench, cradling her head in her hand.
"...And sorry for the book," Snapped Marla out of her funk, as she looked up at Isaac, his pale eyes quickly darting towards her and then back to the other boy.
"It's fine." She said quickly, biting her tongue as to not say anything stupid, and turned her face away from him to roll her eyes. There goes a month's allowance. She looked down at the book, if you could even call it that anymore, longingly and poked one half of the wet page. Pumpkin juice oozed out of the paper causing her to retract her hand with disgust. "Ugh." The redhead murmured, wiping her finger on her robes and delicately pushed the book away. To distract herself, Marla turned to the gravy boy and squinted her eyes. While having mild deja-vu when she saw him in the great hall for the first time, she was now realizing that she most definitely saw him somewhere. His name was Allan... Or Allerd? Something like that. Turning to him, Marla tapped the familiar boy on the shoulder and tilted her head as she asked him, "Do I know you?"

Alan carefully shook his head, not wanting the other boy to feel bad or anything, while he carefully glanced at the girl. She seemed kind of mad and when the second year finally took a look around he noticed a book drenched in gravy and paled a bit. No wonder that she seemed furious, that was most likely her book and the other boy; Alan did not know his name or anything. He just knew that this girl was familiar and that he must have seen her before.
He shook his head slightly, knowing that the boy must feel awful. ”I-It was an accident, don't w-worry”, he muttered carefully and folded the tissue together, placing it on the soaked tablecloth. A lot of Gryffindors just scurried away from around them and continued their lunch. Only some were talking about the incident in hushed whispers behind raised hands. Alan was snapped out of his thoughts, when the girl suddenly tapped his shoulder, making him flinch slightly as he looked up at her.
”Uhm... I was wondering the same. But I cannot quite remember your name, mine is Alan, Alan Vanes”, he muttered in an attempt to help her remember, before he looked over at the other boy. Alan, if he was being honest, just wanted to leave now. His skin on lap and his left arm hurt. The skin where the gravy and splotches of it had made contact, had turned into an angry red and Alan had to bit his lip so that he would not start screaming or whimpering at the pain that coursed through his body.
His mind was running crazy and, when he glanced at the professor table he met gazes with Professor Vernatis for a few second, who was watching the spectacle with a hint of worry. Alan gave a nervous smile, trying to hide the pain, before he turned back to the other two Gryffindor and nervously rubbed the back of his neck. He got an idea and walked over to the book of the girl as he withdrew his wand from his pocket, having to shake it a bit to get rid off some globs of gravy, before he simply decided that wiping them off on his pants – which were useless anyway – was the easier solution.
”R-Reparo”, he muttered with a grimace and he had to repeat spell and wand movement again for it to finally work. But then the gravy that had soaked the book withdrew as the pages flattened out and dried. It took a while for the spell effect to finish but then it did and Alan gave a pained smile as he picked the book out of the sea of gravy as he limped towards the girl, pushing it into her grasp.
”Th-there, d-don't be mad at him anymore please, it was an accident”, he mumbled nervously. Alan just wanted to go to one place now, to his dorm... wait no, they should go elsewhere first. ”Should we get some burning paste fr-from the infirmary?”, he asked into the round, however it was more directed towards the other boy, who also seemed to have been hit by the hot gravy.
