30 May.
Small Hall.
Afternoon.

Her handmade prefect’s badge tucked carefully under her robes, Mari Haynes moved towards the Small Hall swiftly and with ease. She had arranged to meet to two newest prefects, both Gryffindors, to discuss their new titles.

Mari found the whole situation quite particular. She had applied for the Hufflepuff prefect role without hesitation, only to withdraw her application in a last minute decision. The events of the Blossom Ball had gotten the better of her, and, she reasoned, she would need to take care of herself instead of others. Although Hufflepuff had already named its two new prefects, Mari had been taken by surprise when Luna Choi had tossed her a towel and (though she was unaware, sarcastically) declared Mari herself a prefect. The fifth Hufflepuff prefect, to be specific. And, more importantly, the one and only prefect of the Porcelain Palace, Hogwarts’ finest establishment.

Mari had not entirely prepared to become a prefect, especially when she thought there were only four per house, but she was quite pleased, to say the least. As soon as she had determinedly proven her worth by crafting a Prefects badge, she had written an owl to her family sharing the news. The parchment was covered in glitter, as that was what her badge had been made of. Ewan and Isa, her parents, had of course been thrilled. Lucy declared that Mari was “the suck up that I’d always imagined you to be,” and Grace had no idea what the term meant, though she drew her a congratulatory unicorn. Though Mari still has many nights of nightmares and insomnia, her mood had been lifted - she now only slept a few hours crying in the Porcelain Palace, instead of most of her days. She had even dared to try Cheetos once more, though, after her food poisoning spell, the taste now seemed lackluster.

Now, however, she wondered what was next. She had proven that she deserved the role by crafting a badge out of glitter and cardboard, but was surprised that the new Hufflepuff Head of House had not reached out to her with specific tasks. What was she to do now? She had the power, and she craved to use it - justly, of course. Mari was still too scared of Caradoc Browne to ask him specifically, so she knew that she would have to go to another, less intimidating, source: that is, a prefect.

Upon reflection, Mari had decided to owl the two Gryffindor prefects. They were just as new as she, and she worried that by asking the Hufflepuff prefects, they would fear that she was trying to overthrow one of them. It was quite rare, after all, to have a fifth prefect for a house. The Gryffindors would be the best option. Mari just did not understand how they knew their tasks; had they been contacted after crafting their own, far superior, metal badges? If so, why had she not been contacted? Mari needed answers.

In order to conceal her true purposes, Mari had reached out to Emile and Grayson under the guise that she was interviewing them for the paper. They did not need to know her true motives; clearly there was a reason why her new title had not been announced. It was most likely not to threaten the four, already established, Hufflepuff Prefects. Mari understood why. She was special, having been kidnapped and whatnot, that was most certainly why she got the role. But she did not want her power to insinuate that she hoped for a coup d’etat of others’ power. This new Head of House was quite wise, indeed. Either way, though she had said the truth that she was a reporter for the Hogwarts Headliner, notes would be taken for her personal purposes. No article on the two would be written.

She reached the Small Hall, where she had owled them to meet, five minutes ahead of schedule. Mari rested herself on a bench as she pulled out a small notebook filled with interview questions and doodles about her latest renovation projects for the Porcelain Palace. Choi has fixed the broken mirror, but there was still many a rehab to be done on the place before it was habitable. Mari scowled as she remembered the rest of her interaction with Choi and that Riddle girl before she closed her notebook. She couldn’t begin the interview with rage - she needed these two children’s information.

Instead, Mari would twirl her hair mindlessly as as she waited for the boys to show up. Her hair was a mess from lack of care and she looked, overall, unkempt. She donned her favorite blood-stained robes, which served as a reminder of the suffering she had overcome. And though her eyes were heavily bagged with lack of sleep, a glow would reach the brown eyes as she thought of her interview and the power that came with her new position. She was a warrior, but she was special; Mari knew that she would have great influence over the other students of Hogwarts with her new position.

A clarification for anyone else who reads this: I obviously do not think Mari is a prefect and wish no implications of such in this post. This delusion is only for the sake of RP plot. Boys: good luck to you both. Hehe

Being a prefect was one of the things Grayson cherished most. He guessed that he just sort of liked having higher power than some others, and to take part of a very responsible role, he always ensured himself to be the best he could possibly be without sounding too cliche.

As the days passed, he was assigned with patrolling areas all over the school. Some times he was with Aurelia, though they never really talked. They would occasionally pass glances or say hi to one another when going through the halls, but never a real conversation. It was always fun getting to patrol the areas and checking off everywhere assigned. Grayson tryed to be as detailed as possible when reporting an unexpected occurance to his Head of House, making sure that everything is taken care of smoothly.

It had been just like any other day at Hogwarts, the same classes, the same teachers, maybe a few new aqquatainces here and there but nothing special. After Herbology class, though, Grayson had been stopped by an average first year girl with slightly oversized robes and a yellow tie. Mari.. He had thought. Grayson always saw her articles in the school paper, as he always found them interesting to read.

They had a small chat as they walked to his next class, convientley placed next to hers. She had brought up an interview with Emile, and asked if Grayson would be interested in having input as well. He had lifted a brow, curious as to why she would ask two Gryffindor boys out of everyone, but he agreed with a smile and waved her goodbye.

As Grayson cautiously made his way to the Small Hall, he noticed Mari pleasantly sitting on a bench, twiring her hair with her finger. He had noticed a slight glint from her robes as he approached her, and noticed it was a handmade prefects badge? Grayson wasn't sure what to think, but decided to not ask questions, sure there was some reasoning behind it.

One of her two victims participants had finally arrived. Mari eyed the boy suspiciously as he approached her and gave a convincing smile of innocence. Be convincing, she told herself, and with a jolt of recognition she realized that it was not convincing at all if she hold that notebook as if she was going to take down notes.

Once she was in position, she could begin. She had studied which prefect was which, and thus knew that Grayson was before her. Emile, the other prefect, could show up if he chose - as long as she had one of them to get the information, it didn't matter if she had the other. They were both first year boys, essentially interchangeable, and she didn't even know what the other one looked like, for crying out loud. With a timid voice in the beginning that grew to more confidence, she began: "So Grayson, I am pleased to see you got my owl. I'm Mari if you can't remember, of course, and I'm a member of the paper. You're okay if I write your answers down?"

Whether he nodded or not, she would continue: "Well I guess the first thing I wanted to ask was how did you find out about this position? Why did you apply?"

Hi!! I really do apologize for the absence of this thread! I recently had to take a break irl, though I am back now!
Grayson had noticed Mari's eyes following him as he sat down on the bench beside her. The cardboard badge glistened with the reflection of the sun, enough glitter to cause a storm. As he shifted uncomfortably, he immediately sat up straight, portraying good posture and a firm attitude.

"So Grayson, I am pleased to see you got my owl. I'm Mari if you can't remember, of course, and I'm a member of the paper. You're okay if I write your answers down?"
He nodded, and she began to focus her pencil on the notebook she had been writing on.

"Ah, I found out about the position from a dear friend. She had convinced me to apply, considering the fact that I adore leadership and directing others in the right direction." He had replied, smiling confidently. He had been biting his tongue as she asked the next question, contemplating about asking the reasoning behind her dorm-made badge. As he pulled on the sleeves of his robe, he pointed at the piece of cardboard covered with sequins and glitter.

"And what is that?" He asked politely as possible, hoping to not to offend her crafting skills.

You're fine. :)

The boy sat awkwardly, and Mari wondered if it was a requirement to sit so stiffly, so she smoothed her robes and straightened her back to mimic his positioning. It wasn't really comfortable, but if that was what it took to be a proper prefect, Mari would do it. Eager to please, eager to prove herself, Mari would believe anything that the Gryffindor said or did as factual. If he was prone to pranks, this fact could be quite destructive to young Mari Haynes.

When the boy said that he had heard about the position and was convinced to apply by a dear friend, Mari smiled knowingly. Obviously, the boy had also been recruited by a prefect. Mari wondered if Grayson also treasured the item that he had gotten to prove his prefect ability. She, for one, sometimes slept with that towel at night. It was a comfort of her favorite job and favorite place: prefect and the Porcelain Palace, respectively. Curiously, she asked with a smile, "And what did she give you when you got the job?"

While she meant what did Grayson get when this girl hired him, to any outsiders of Mari's head, it would seem more plausible to think that she was imply wondering what the girl had gotten him as a congratulations gift for getting prefect. Context was necessary; poor Mari probably wasn't a very good reporter for the Hogwarts Headliner. Not that it mattered, in her mind - she knew that this interview would never be fleshed out into a story.

What should have set the alarm bells ringing was when Grayson asked her what her badge was, but Mari assumed that she would be getting a normal, metallic badge someday so long as she continued to do a good job as the fifth prefect of Hufflepuff. Looking at the blond-haired boy confusedly, Mari simply said, "My badge."

Right. That was...weird. Mari wondered if he had not experienced the typical prefect's initiation, but she didn't want to make him feel any more uncomfortable than he already did, so she continued on: "So how did they get you adjusted to the position, then? How do you know what to do?"

She had been a bit confused on what the next steps were; no one had really talked to her yet on when and where she could give detentions, for example. Mari had tried to at least be present in the Common Room a bit more, smile at a few people, but as for direct prefect rules, she was lost.
