The menagerie is buzzing with life. Kiana strolls through the place, scrunching her nose at the smell of feces - she can't quite place which animal it belongs to. Despite the smell, she marvels at the various critters in the shop. Ferrets, toads, rats, even pygmy puffs. She's tempted by them, seeing those fuzzy bodies and giant eyes. But she's on a mission. She's looking for a snake.

Snakes were an...unconventional pet, to say the least. She knew her father probably wouldn't have approved, but this wasn't about her father. Ever since she was a child, she'd felt a connection to snakes. This was likely due to her parselmouth ability, but even then she thought snakes were quite cute. She'd met one, even conversed with one, in her backyard once. She had lovingly named the snake Mobius. Unfortunately, Mobius moved out a couple years ago so as to respect Kiana's father's morbid fear of reptiles. She missed her. In all honesty, snakes weren't the conniving monsters most people made them out to be. They were quite sweet, if you treated them well. But of course she felt that way because she was privileged with the ability to communicate with snakes.

As the old shopkeeper passed by, Kiana flashed her a kind smile.

"Hello ma'am, may I know where the Emerald Gazers are?"

The shopkeeper smiled, her wrinkles folding like pages of an old book.

"Of course, right this way dear."

As she followed the woman to a further corner of the shop, she began to hear hisses. At least, to a human ear the sound would be hisses. To her, she heard dialogue.

"Oh? A newbie? What a sssspecial occurrence," one voice hissed.

"Quiet! We can't ssssstartle her."

As Kiana made her way to the very back of the shop, she spotted a snake curled quietly in its own cage. It looked awfully lonely.

"Hey,"she hissed, hoping she sounded friendly.

The snake looked up at her, startled and pleasantly surprised. The other snakes turned in unison to look at her. Twelve beady eyes were now on her and she began to sweat a little.

"A Parsssselmouth? Incredible!"

"She can sssssspeak!"

"Unbelievable!"

She laughed.

"You don't get visitors often, do you?" she asked.

"I'm afraid we aren't very popular."

Kiana nodded gravely, finding it funny how she was having such a formal conversation with a snake. She turned back to the snake she was previously looking at, dazzled by it's beautiful green scales. Each scale looked like a piece of carved jade.

"What's your name?"

"I...was never given one. I'm waiting for someone to name me," the snake replied. "I only know that I'm female."

At that moment, gazing into the tiny yet emotional eyes of that snake, Kiana knew she met her match.

"Jade."

"Hmmm?" Jade cocked her head (yes, snakes can do that), confused.

"Jade. I'll name you Jade."
