Hogsmeade station was once again packed with students. Theodore walked impatiently behind a group of first year girls as they boarded the train, becoming increasingly frustrated as they giggled uncaringly. Eventually, he climbed up into the carriage and shoved his way past them. “Watch it!” One of them whined, but Theo ignored her and continued on. He didn’t seem to be looking for a compartment, but rather a student, in particular, any student who’s pockets were stuffed with sweets from Honeydukes. It was a popular tradition for children to stock up on wizarding candies before the end of term. First years like Theo weren’t permitted to make the trip to Hogsmeade during the school year, so he had resorted to begging and petty theft to satisfy his sweet tooth. “I’m not giving you anything, these are for my brothers at home.” One third year told him as Theo mournfully eyed their large box of cauldron cakes and fizzing whizbees. “Why don’t you just get something from the trolley witch?” They continued, much to the Gryffindor’s disappointment. “They aren’t the same!” He pouted and moved on to the next group of students quickly.

Upon reaching the door to the prefect's carriage, his foraging came to an abrupt end. He had procured himself two chocolate frogs and a small handful of Bertie Botts every flavour beans. Theo heard the sound of a whistle, there was a sudden lurch forward and the train started to move. With most compartments full, it became a challenge to find a place he could enjoy his sweets in peace. Heading back the way he came, Theo spied a fourth year Hufflepuff leaving a compartment on the opposite end of the carriage. A muggle newspaper dangled precariously out the back of his robes and Theo’s kleptomania took hold of him once more. Under the guise of peering out the window, he concealed his wand under a sleeve and flicked it with a degree of extreme subtlety. Speaking quietly he muttered “Wingardium Leviosa.”

Critical Failure!

He had, of course, intended to lift the newspaper out the back of the unsuspecting students' robes as he walked away into the next carriage. However, the moment Theo looked up to see if his theft was a success, there was a sharp crack and a blue spark shot from the end of his wand down the carriage. “What in the blazes!” Theo heard, as the Hufflepuff lost his footing in fright, the spark exploding on the carriage floor a few inches from him. Theo did not intend on hanging around, he bolted, throwing himself into the closest compartment and sliding the door shut. He took a seat and attempted to look as inconspicuous as possible. The fourth year walked passed the compartment in search of his assailant, giving the seats a dismissive glance before disappearing out of view. Theo slumped down, letting out a tremendous sigh of relief as he caught his breath. It took him a few moments to realise he wasn’t alone. There was another boy in the compartment with him. “Oh- hello.” He said cheerily, trying to hide his surprise.

Theo fixed his hair, brushing it to one side and clearing his throat. He opened his mouth in an attempt to offer an explanation for what had transpired in the corridor, but only gibberish came out. “There was um- You know, it was just-” He started, before settling on changing the subject. “Do you mind if I sit here?” He asked, though he had already made himself at home and had no intention of leaving. He placed his small pile of beans on the seat next to him and then began opening a chocolate frog. The boy sitting opposite was in Gryffindor also. Theo had seen him in the common room and remembered his face from the Spring ball, however they had never interacted before. Which was quite a remarkable feat considering they were the same house, year and gender. “I’m Theo.” He said simply, after a single bite of a chocolate frog. His cadence and expression was not particularly friendly, but not unkind either. He had the attitude of someone who wasn’t interested in engaging socially and acted as if giving out his name was an unpleasant obligation. As the boy continued to pick away at his candy, it became obvious he was not intending on sharing.

I hauled my trunk up the stairs of the train. That's one year of Hogwarts done, only six more to go. I've survived my first year and haven't really failed in any of the important subjects. I won't be seeing the last of magic though. I'll be coming back for summer camp at London Quidditch Stadium. I sat down in an empty compartment and looked out the window. The Castle had been my home for nearly a year and it felt kind of sad to leave. But I pushed those thought to the back of my mind and tried to focus on the more happy thought. I would get to see my parents again instead of just communicating through owls.

I heard a small crack outside followed by an loud explosion. After that my compartment door swung open to reveal a slender boy, about my age with grey hair. Weird. He then sat down frantically and tried to look as innocent as possible but to me he looked like the most guiltiest person on this train.
“Oh- hello.” he said cheerily. I stared at him.
“There was um- You know, it was just-” He started, before changing the subject. “Do you mind if I sit here?”
I wouldn't have minded some company but even if I did say no, I don't think it would've made a difference as he'd already made himself at home. I had seen this kid before in classes and in the common room before but we've never really talked.
“I’m Theo.” he said simply.
"Nice to meet you Theo. I'm Alejandro." I replied.
The next five minutes were filled with awkward silence except for the sound of chewing coming from Theo.
"So uhh... every flavour beans huh? Quick question, why do you even bother eating that garbage?" I asked him trying to make some conversation.
Every flavour beans taste like shit. There's no other way to put it. I don't think anyone would voluntarily buy a box for themselves to eat.
"I'm sure there're plenty of other sweets better than those." I said trying to strike up on a conversation.

Theodore paused his chewing momentarily as Alejandro said his own name. He raised a brow slightly and looked as though he was about to ask 'where are you from?' but at the last second decided this would be rude and continued chewing in silence. Theo himself had a none English second name and disliked explaining his heritage. He did however, have a lot to say about Alejandro's question. Theo had not taken any offence to being told that he was eating 'garbage', but instead cracked a smile, his expression one of understanding. "My parents don't allow me to eat sweets at home." He started, before taking a bite out of a chocolate frog and them unfolding the box to find a wizard card hidden within. "I'll take anything I can get my hands on. Besides, the beans aren't so bad. If you grab a bunch in your hand and eat them all at once, the good flavours cancel out the bad flavours and you end up with a sweet tasting pulp." He explained, though did not make it sound very appealing.

He turned the wizard card over to show Alejandro who it was. The golden lettering at the bottom of the card read 'Roderick Plumpton'. Above was a moving portrait of a man dressed in a light blue quidditch uniform with golden trimmed sleeves. "Seeker for the Tutshill Tornados." Theo said, reading the back of the card, not looking particularly impressed. He discarded it on the seat next to him and then shoved the empty sweet wrappers into the pockets of his robes.

"I've been dying to get my hands on some muggle news. There was a general election earlier this month and I still don't know who won. It annoys me how little magical folks care about the real world." He said, a clear sense of frustration in his voice. He'd spoke as if he hadn't considered himself a magical person and his use of the words 'real world' gave the sense that maybe he wasn't taking being a wizard too seriously. He wasn't giving the other boy eye contact, instead he had rested his chin on the palm of his hand and was staring out at the passing farmland.

Theo seemed amused by my comment about the Every Flavour Beans and cracked a smile.
"My parents don't allow me to eat sweets at home." He started, before taking a bite out of a chocolate frog. Parents not letting kids eat sweets should be a crime and should go to prison for that.
"I'll take anything I can get my hands on. Besides, the beans aren't so bad. If you grab a bunch in your hand and eat them all at once, the good flavours cancel out the bad flavours and you end up with a sweet tasting pulp."
More like the opposite. The bad flavours drown out the good flavours and it just turns into a sticky lump of shit. Believe me, I tried a handful or Every Flavour Beans and it was quite unpleasant to say the least.

I feel bad for Theo for not being able to eat sweets at home. But one thought bothered me a bit. His parents aren't here at Hogwarts are they, so why doesn't he buy sweets from Honeydukes secretly not tell his parents. Does Theo not know he can do that? Or is he just a really big stickler for the rules?
When all these thoughts were whirling around in my head, Theo showed me the card he had gotten from his chocolate frog. It was the seeker for the Tutshill Tornado or so he says. I'm not really into professional Quidditch
"Can I have it? I don't think I have that card." I asked.

"I've been dying to get my hands on some muggle news. There was a general election earlier this month and I still don't know who won. It annoys me how little magical folks care about the real world." he said with a clear sense of frustration.
Hmm, what does he mean the 'real world'? As far as I'm concerned magic is most definitely real. Though the lack of muggle news is frustrating for me too.
"I don't really care about the general election. As long as a psychopath is not ruling the country, I'm fine." I said giving my opinion on the general election.
"It is really annoying that you can't any muggle technology in though. The Euros have started and I've been dying to see how Spain do."

Theodore’s eyes subtly darted towards the wizard card as Alejandro mentioned it. The card’s value to him had been nothing more than litter until he knew someone wanted it. He slowly reached over and pulled the card closer to himself protectively as he furrowed his brow in Alejandro’s direction. There was a long pause where Theo debated internally what price to set for his prize. As he continued to think, his expression slowly became more relaxed, eventually letting out an audible sigh and lightly tossing the card onto Alejandro’s lap without asking for anything in return. “Have it.” He simply said.

The Hogwarts express passed green fields, hedgerows and the craggy moors of the Scottish highlands. This was only Theo’s second journey on the train, having not returned home for the Easter or Christmas holidays. His eyes scanned the horizon in search of anything interesting, though the countryside was rather barren. Theo continued to stare out of the window even as Alejandro made his dismissive comment about the election. He did not seem too bothered about it, having expected such a reaction. What twelve year old is interested in politics anyway?

“Wizards think they are too good for muggle technology. Too proud to accept that some muggle inventions are just superior to the wizarding equivalents. I’m mainly thinking of the telephone and the internet.” Theodore had now turned back to face Alejandro, clearly interested in this particular topic. He’d only been in the compartment a few minutes and had already bad-mouthed magical folk twice. “I’ve noticed the wizarding world is very slow to adapt to change. The internet was invented in the 90s, so that means Hogwarts is due an upgrade somewhere in the 23rd century.” Theo continued, half jokingly.

The boy raised a brow at Alejandro as he mentioned the ‘euros’. For some reason, Theo in all his wisdom, assumed the other boy was referring to the Eurovision song competition and immediately began to cause further confusion by saying; “Sorry to break it to you, but they didn’t do very well.” At the very least, this satisfied Theo’s curiosity about Alejandro’s non-English name; he must have been Spanish. “Do you have to travel far from King’s Cross? I’m all the way back up in Manchester so I’ll be taking a second train with my parents.”

Theo gave me the wizard card.
“Have it.” he said simply. I took the card from his hand. That's one more closer to completing the collection for Chocolate frogs. Opening them can be quite addicting. You can buy some at Honeydukes for 2 sickles.
“Wizards think they are too good for muggle technology. Too proud to accept that some muggle inventions are just superior to the wizarding equivalents. I’m mainly thinking of the telephone and the internet.”
Bit biased in my opinion, I mean wizardry has some advantages compared to muggle tech but still, the internet and telephones are much better than owls and newspapers.
"Yeah, it would better to have internet and phones at Hogwarts but Wizardry also has it's advantages compared to muggle technology." I replied defending the magical world a bit.
"For example wizards and witches don't need to get out of their seat to get a snack. They can just wave their wand and the food ill come flying into their mouths."
That's what I'm going to do when I graduate. Right now, we're not allowed to use magic outside of Hogwarts. Only my mum can do magic at home and I can't really ask her to do that because you know how grumpy mums can become.
“I’ve noticed the wizarding world is very slow to adapt to change. The internet was invented in the 90s, so that means Hogwarts is due an upgrade somewhere in the 23rd century.” said Theo jokingly.
I chuckled at the joke he made and watched as the trees passed by at tremendous speed. It was all a green blur.

“Sorry to break it to you, but they didn’t do very well.” replied Theo to my statement about the Euros.
Are they out already? So soon. I think now it's about the end of the group stages now. Though it wasn't the best Spanish team and we got a pretty tough group.
I shrugged.
"I mean we didn't have the best team and we got a pretty tough group so, I guess it makes sense. " I explained without a second thought as to how Theo knew without internet and the muggle newspapers usually only have columns about the England team.
“Do you have to travel far from King’s Cross? I’m all the way back up in Manchester so I’ll be taking a second train with my parents.” said Theo.
Manchester? That's closer to Hogwarts then London if my Geography's correct. Theo is basically taking a detour in London, his parents as well. That probably is quite annoying.
"Manchester is up north right? It's closer to Hogwarts then London right?" I asked trying to get some of my questions answered.
"And I live in London so I don't need to travel that far. About a 15 minute drive from my house to the Station without traffic. If there's traffic, that's a different story." I continued.

Naturally, Theo found Alejandro’s counter argument rather weak. He imagined an overweight middle aged man in a recliner, holding his wand like a TV remote as food levitated from an open fridge into his mouth. “Well that’s just lazy.” He said humorlessly. “Many muggles would kill to seize a fraction of our power. I don’t intend to waste my gift sitting around stuffing myself.” Which was a rather hypocritical thing to declare given that he had just done exactly that with sweets. The irony of which sailed over his head without a second thought.

Theo nodded affirmatively. “That’s right, I have another three to four hour train journey after this one. At least it is on a muggle electric train though, they are much faster than the Hogwarts express.” He said, not knowing exactly how familiar Alejandro was with muggle transport. “In ‘Hogwarts; a history’ it says that protective charms are placed around the school grounds which prevent muggles stumbling across it and also keep undesirables from being able to get in. Students have to take the train from London because the school is difficult to find otherwise. Did you know that it cannot be charted on any map?” He said with a soft smile on his face, enjoying the ability to share something he had learned.

A sound akin to the shuffling of feet emanated from down the carriage. A few moments later around four other first year students, mostly girls, stood outside the compartment, one of them peering at the boys through the window. With one swift motion Theo had drawn his wand.

“Colloportus.” He uttered just as the onlooking girl tried the door handle.

WDC 10

In the end, the result was: 17
Success!

To her dismay it wouldn’t budge. Theo made an exaggerated shrugging motion and then pointed down the carriage. He spoke loud and slowly so they could hear him. “Sorry, this compartment is taken. No room here. Try further down the train.” he said with a fake smile and then waved them on. The compartments were designed to seat six to eight children, but Theo seemed intent on having as much space to himself as possible. Once the first years had left, he put his feet up on the bench to emphasise this fact. He would not comment on what just happened unless Alejandro did.

“You’re from London?” He said with some surprise. “My condolences.”

“Well that’s just lazy.” Theo said dully. “Many muggles would kill to seize a fraction of our power. I don’t intend to waste my gift sitting around stuffing myself.”
Jeez, this kid has no sense of humour. Can't he see that it was just a joke? I shrugged at him and started to gain a large interest in the greenery outside.

Theo nodded, confirming that my geography is correct and Manchester is closer to Hogwarts.
“That’s right, I have another three to four hour train journey after this one. At least it is on a muggle electric train though, they are much faster than the Hogwarts express.”
Electric train, Hogwarts express. They're all trains. You both have to sit on it for a few hours, which is tiring. Can't the Hogwarts express just stop at Manchester and pick up some of the students there instead of picking up everybody at London.
"Yeah but going on the muggle train is still tiring. I think they should add a stop at every major city in the UK." I exclaimed.

“In ‘Hogwarts; a history’ it says that protective charms are placed around the school grounds which prevent muggles stumbling across it and also keep undesirables from being able to get in. Students have to take the train from London because the school is difficult to find otherwise. Did you know that it cannot be charted on any map?” said Theo with a small smile.
That's a good thing. I've been to enough old castles and ruins to know that the fee they charge is bloody expensive (or so my mum says).
"Good. If the muggles find it, they'll turn the castle into a museum and the forbidden forest into a zoo." I joked.

The sound of feet could be heard outside the compartment. A little while later, a group of girls were staring through the window of our compartment. Theo had his wand out right away and casted the locking charm on the door.
"Shouldn't we have let them in? We've got plenty of space." I said only half-heartedly.
What Theo did was not the nice thing to do in my opinion but I myself would not be too keen with a group of girl chatting and gossiping in our compartment.

I debated about telling Theo about Hogsmeade. There's a chance he might report me to a prefect and there's a chance that he doesn't. I decided on telling him. What's the worst that can happen if you're caught sneaking into Hogsmeade.
"For sweets have you ever tried to go to Honeydukes in Hogsmeade? It's quite cheap there. You don't need to go around begging people." I said choosing my words carefully.

Whether Theo was aware Alejandro was just joking was irrelevant to him. He was intent on denouncing slothfulness even if the other Gryffindor was not serious. To Theo, inactivity and idleness was the path to wasting your life. The other boy’s shrug had not deterred him either, he stayed looking at Alejandro even after boy looked away to watch the passing countryside. Theo was struck slightly dumb by Alejandro’s suggestion that the Hogwarts express should pick students up on the way. Eventually chuckling, he lay down on the bench looking up at the carriages ceiling. “The train journey already takes all day; how much longer do you want to make it? Imagine stopping and starting in every city.” He mused.

On the topic of the castle’s location, Theo looked pensive after Alejandro’s remarks. He looked almost reluctant to speak, but forced himself to anyway, the smirk disappearing from his face. “Believe me, my parents would love to know where the castle is. They hated the idea of sending me away without knowing where I was. It was difficult for them to trust the wizard that came to explain everything. I didn’t really want to go either, but it isn’t much of a choice. I was stuck dealing with my untamed magical abilities regardless of if I came to Hogwarts or not.” He said, his expression an unusual mix of disappointment, frustration and sorrow.

As the first-year girls walked away and Alejandro asked if what he did was the correct course of action, Theo gave him a knowing look. He did not speak, but exuded an expression which indicated he thought he had done what was harsh and necessary to secure his own comfort. It was selfish and cunning, an act that would have suited Slytherin house. “There’s plenty of space for them further down the train.” Theo lied brazenly, not caring if Alejandro believed him or not.

“Honeydukes?” Theo repeated, looking curiously towards the other Gryffindor. Theo knew of the sweet shop as he had begged older students throughout the year to pick up candy for him. His surprise was due to Alejandro’s wording. “What do you mean ‘tried’? Have you snuck out to Hogsmeade during term?” He asked suspiciously.

“The train journey already takes all day; how much longer do you want to make it? Imagine stopping and starting in every city.”
Fair enough. The train's just too bloody slow to go to every major city in the UK. Now a bullet train would solve that problem but considering that wizards still use quill and parchment for writing, that's probably not going to happen any time soon.
"If they switched this to a bullet then yes. Buuut that's probably not gonna happen in our school years." I replied.

“Believe me, my parents would love to know where the castle is. They hated the idea of sending me away without knowing where I was. It was difficult for them to trust the wizard that came to explain everything. I didn’t really want to go either, but it isn’t much of a choice. I was stuck dealing with my untamed magical abilities regardless of if I came to Hogwarts or not.” said Theo.
The smirk was now gone from his face and replaced with a mixture of emotions that I couldn't really tell what it was.
"Well, I'm sure that you've made some new friends and enjoyed something here for the past year." I replied to him.
I could still remember the nervousness when I got off the train. So many unfamiliar faces. After that I made some new friends and now I'm starting to enjoy myself at Hogwarts.
"I got quite nervous when I first got here. Then I found out it's actually not that bad." I continued.

“There’s plenty of space for them further down the train.” was his reply when asked about not letting the group of girls in. That's true. It might not have been the nicest action but as I said before, I'm not too crazy about having about 5 girls in the compartment with us.
“Honeydukes?” repeated Theo looking curiously at me.
“What do you mean ‘tried’? Have you snuck out to Hogsmeade during term?”
"Yeah! You haven't? I blurted out without thinking.
I cursed under my breath. Damn my big mouth! I really need to think before I speak. That's the second time I've revealed that I sneak into Hogsmeade. The first time I had to pay a hefty fine of buying someone else sweets. Sure there were lots of first and second years sneaking into Hogsmeade but there were always one or two exceptions. I guessing Theo here was part of that group.
