A Frogian Slip
Reid stood beside his mom, watching her explain the animals in the Menagerie and which ones might be suited for him. The pair of black bifocals sat on the bridge of his nose, his green eyes following his mom's finger closely. "Really?" he spoke up. Edith nodded with a warm smile, her brown curls illuminated by the sun outside of the store. They resembled one another in more ways than one and it was no surprise that the pair looked equally excited in buying a pet.
"A cat is a big responsibility, Reid. If you want a cat, remember that you have to feed, clean, and watch over them the whole time." The young boy nodded, stepped up to look at the cats that were around. His mother explained how she had a cat, one that she took very good care of till she gave her friend the cat. He peaked at the cages, gently petting the cats that came up to greet him.
A warm smile spread over his sunkissed features as he softly cooed at them from where he stood. Edith watched him fondly, ruffling his hair to usher him onto the other animals. "We still have to get your books and your replacement for your gloves remember? Next time, do not ruin them." she sternly informed him. Reid dipped his head a little in embarrassment, trying not to grin. "Sorry mum, couldn't help it. I thought they'd be great to hold the sparklers with." His mom shook her head with a stifled amusement on her face.
"Owls are quite nice to have, I had a Morepork. I named her Adeline, or Addy for short." Reid nodded, coming over to the cages to check out the owls. He stared at them for a while, rather enamored by the way that their feathers ruffled. Curiosity, he was always a curious soul and he's always wanted to experience the newest things in life. Getting a pet was one of them, even his mum was hesitant in letting him take care of an animal. Both his parents had been afraid that he wouldn't be able to handle it and would fall behind on his studies.
Worse was the animal would get hurt because of something he did. His mother talked about the owls behind him and even talked to mister Witticker, the shopkeeper. Reid thought he was a very nice man, thought about how well taken care of the animals were in the Menagerie. "So, Reid." The boy tilted his head up to look at his mom. "An owl or a cat?" The boy blinked as he looked over at the toads, which he pointed at. "What about them?" His mom made a face as she came over to look at them, she didn't seem thrilled and almost looked confused.
"A toad?" Mister Witticker smiled as he took over with explaining the toads, which was actually quite fascinating to Reid. He crossed his legs on the slightly dirty floor, leaning over to look at each of the toads. The tip of his finger gingerly pressed against the glass and Reid turned his head to the shopkeeper. "What's wrong with that one?" Witticker leaned over to look at it, Reid made way for the stocky man and waited.
"Ah this one, yes this one was born without a leg. It doesn't get around much, but he's a good one. This one will need extra care, he has trouble moving and won't always be able to get his food if you ever let him out. This one is a Natterjack toads." Edith watched her son. "I don't know if you're able to take care of something extra." Reid watched the toads, which seemed to stare back at him. He rubbed his knuckle and gave a little wave to the toads from the other side of the glass. "I'd be worried if you take this one everywhere you go. I'm sure there -"
"Everyone deserves a home." It had come out in his subconscious, a Freudian slip as he thought about how he would want to be taken if he was the toad. Edith's features softened as she watched her son look at the toad. Witticker reached down to pick up the toad, placing him gently in Reid's awaiting hands. His mother went over a small lecture of how he had to keep his new pet well fed and all of that. He cradled the toad close, who didn't really seem to move much. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that it merely had a very small nub of where his leg should be, a birth defect for sure. But he still wanted to give him a home. "Scully, pleased to meet you mate."
