As soon as the bell rang to release Diane from Transfiguration, she practically ran to the library and took a seat at a table by another first-year Slytherin girl who she had seen around the common room. Diane had fallen into the routine of going there whenever she had a few extra minutes so she could devour as much knowledge as possible. This time, she was reading her Potions textbook for about the 30th time to study for an upcoming test, and it was so boring that she thought she’d actually fall asleep. She had read all of the Hogwarts textbooks up to the third year prior to starting school, and so far during the school year she had progressed much further because of the infinitely more resourceful, well stocked Hogwarts library. Her home library had been expansive, but it couldn’t compare to the vast amount of books that this one held.
Understandably, reading the material in her first-year Potions book felt like she was trying to read a long textbook about the alphabet. However, Diane knew she needed to review it before her test, just to ensure she did well. After 30 minutes of reading, she shut the book loudly and groaned.
“I feel like I’ve been banging my head on the wall for the past half hour,” she complained to the girl sitting by her, who was still reading her own book. Diane didn’t like being interrupted when she was reading, but she had no qualms about doing it to others. “This book is so basic,” she added. “I’d rather be studying how to brew amortentia or Felix Felicis, not the cure for boils.”

~ * ~The library was one of the main places that Ruby frequented. Libraries, simply put, were a home to Ruby. They were places filled with shelves upon shelves of knowledge, and she loved it. She had a deep desire for knowledge, for no reason other than that she truly adored learning. She was in here pretty much every day – even if it was just to quickly exchange books from the previous day or two for some new ones. She went through books at a rather fast pace, but, thankfully, this library had enough books so that she would stay busy for a while longer.
Currently, Ruby was alone at a table. A stack of large, advanced books was positioned perfectly in front of her and to the right, lined up with the edge of the table upon which it lay. The Slytherin sat with her back straight, reading one of the books, which was open directly in front of her on the table. Ruby had an air – aura, presence, whatever one wanted to call it – that came partially from her posture. It was one of confidence, ambition, determination, passion, power, and sharp intelligence, blended together to create a feeling that was hard for many to pick apart and a fire in her eyes that was typically masked by her cold, calculating nature. Ruby was an observant, analytical girl – always noticing people, learning more about them, paying attention to what they did, analyzing them and their behavior, always more aware of her surroundings than anyone else seemed to be. Although she was currently reading, she had just been observing the people around her that were scattered across the library. However, there hadn't been many people that particularly stood out or interested her, and since she had gleaned every bit of information she could from watching them, she had selected her book from the pile and started reading.
Right now, she was enjoying her peaceful reading and learning, when a Slytherin girl that she had seen in classes and the common room came and sat near her. That wasn't much of a bother, as she seemed to be staying quiet. That changed when the girl started to complain, interrupting her. Reluctantly, Ruby quickly finished her paragraph and glanced at the page number, dragging her cold gaze up to settle on her fellow Slytherin's face. She would have expected someone of her own house to know better than to do this. Honestly. What was the girl even complaining about? “I feel like I’ve been banging my head on the wall for the past half hour,” was what she had said. Ruby raised a single eyebrow, fighting the urge to say "So what?" or "Good for you". Why would Ruby even care? She didn't, and that was the truth, but she held her tongue so that she could hear what else the girl had to say.
“This book is so basic. I’d rather be studying how to brew Amortentia or Felix Felicis, not the Cure for Boils.” Aha. That was slightly more interesting. Perhaps Ruby had found someone that was at least somewhat like-minded and enjoyed learning and going ahead of their year's skill level. Her eyes flicked to the title of the book for barely a second. It was their Potions textbook. It wasn't that boring – Ruby had enjoyed reading it over the summer, and it had taught her some interesting things. Sure, she had immediately continued onto later years' things after that, but that was an unimportant detail. “Why are you reading it then?” Ruby asked, a little irritated at the girl's apparent lack of common sense. If it wasn't teaching her anything, and she didn't like it, then why would she read it?
It hadn't occurred to Ruby that some people needed to study. She would read something, perhaps write it down in one of her notebooks and review it once or twice later on, and she'd remember it. It was as simple as that. She didn't experience the same kind of struggles of needing to study for a test. Because of that, she had to resist making a snide comment, looking at the girl with distaste, or letting her lips curl into a sneer. No, she wasn't going to allow herself to do any of those things – at least, not yet. She had to find out more about this girl first and decide if she would be good enough for a potential ally.
“Do you generally read more advanced books, like I do? Why are you still reading the first-year textbooks if you find it to be too basic?”~ * ~

Diane blinked at the other girl's blunt tone of voice and her slightly aggressive question. She wasn't oblivious to the girl's flash of irritation, but she ignored it. "Well you see, since we have a test coming up in potions, I thought it would be prudent to review the material one time. Even though I learned all of this years ago, I knew it wouldn't hurt to touch up on some of the finer details that I may have forgotten," she replied, a little indignantly. Though she always behaved slightly arrogantly around others, Diane didn't appreciate when anyone else besides her did it. She tried not to be too irritated at the other girl's air of superiority, but it definitely rubbed her the wrong way.
"Yes, I do prefer reading more advanced books. I read the textbooks that Hogwarts usually requires of third years before I even started my first year, and I've read much further since school has started. I really love the library here. My parents' library in our manor back home is huge, but it still doesn't have nearly as many books as the Hogwarts library," Diane continued. She quickly realized that she had been babbling, and that she probably sounded stupid, but she didn't want this other haughty girl to think that she was less intelligent or less capable.
Diane peered more closely at the other girl. "What's your name anyway? And what's that you're reading?" she demanded. She hadn't meant to come off as rude, but she realized the words had slipped out in an aggressive tone. Rather than apologize, she simply watched the girl to see how she would react. Maybe the two of them could become friends, if the other was as smart as she said she was.
