It had felt like an eternity since Landon had found a corner seat at one of the front benches filled with other eleven year olds that littered Hogwart’s Great Hall. And great it was. Even after sitting there for nearly an hour, Landon was still mesmerized by the candles that floated above their heads. But what was more spectacular than that was the open night sky that stretched along what would have been the hall’s ceiling. Landon was still new to the magical world and the only other experience he had with it was during his short time to Diagon Alley and even that afternoon couldn’t prepare the young wizard for what the magical school had to offer.

Landon had watched kid after kid being placed in one of Hogwart’s four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff and each time the corresponding table cheered at their newest member. Truthfully, Landon didn’t know much about them, or Hogwarts, or even about magic itself. It was all so foreign for him. He had recalled another witch his age refer to his parents as muggles when he described what they did for a living. Even now, he wasn’t sure if the term was positive or not when remembering the face the girl had made. He tried explaining how amazing of a teacher his father was and how many people his mother had helped as a social worker but it all seemed uninteresting to the young girl.

“Mr. Landon Storm!”

When his name was called, he snapped out of the memory of that day and became painfully aware of how quiet it always got when a student walked up those stairs. Pulling himself away from his seat, Landon went around the table and crossed toward the slightly elevated stage. Each step he took seemed to echo back at him and he didn’t dare look behind him at the peering eyes. When he arrived at the lone chair where the professor held out the sorting hat for him to put on, he took one last gulp of air.

Turning around, he sat at the edge of the seat and closed his eyes before he felt the worn-leather upon his head. He nearly fell off that very seat when a voice whispered in his ear.

“Hmm. Interesting. A blank slate ready to be molded”

Landon knew it to be the hat’s voice because of the whispers he had overhead at the table about it’s magic and purpose but even still, the boy still felt shock and awe.

”You have a knack for knowledge, thirsty even for it. Those in Ravenclaw gravitate toward such a yearning … but no, even with all that knowledge you are quite humble. Those in Hufflepuff would welcome you quite easily. And what about Gryffindor, hmm?”

Landon had heard only great things about the house and yet he wasn’t sure he’d fit in there, or at any of the other three, really. And it seemed the hat felt his reservation.

”Tell me Landon – why are you even here?”

The question surprised him. More so because he never actually felt like the decision to come was ever truly his. The acceptance letter came via owl, he knew he was different, and it seemed like an obvious cause and effect situation.

But that wasn’t entirely true. When his powers manifested in the kitchen that one fateful evening, he knew that his life would never be the same. He knew that being a wizard meant that he wasn’t going to just be his parent’s gay son. He wouldn’t be 'Landon, the gay one.' In that moment he knew he could use whatever gifts were inside of him to make the world a better place. That was his answer.

“I want to learn to be a great wizard and to make the world safer for people like me. People who don’t have a choice to be what the world deems as normal.” There was a double innuendo there and he knew that the hat understood what he was saying.

”Ah. There’s that ambition that was buried so deep, passion too. You have learned how to adapt, Mr. Storm. I see it now. There’s the potential of greatness. But, ah … those parents. Hmm. Muggles, it seems?”

There was that term again.

“What are ‘muggles’?”

”Ah, so much to learn still. Maybe Ravenclaw wasn’t the best fit, afterall. See, Mr. Storm – muggles are non-magical individuals. And, well – Slytherin’s pool of little snakes usually come from a ‘purer’ lineage of magical users. They may not accept you into their midst’s. But yet, everything I see in you points toward the snake’s den.”

Landon didn’t recoil from the thought of not being accepted, though. The very idea made him pursue the thought of himself as a Slytherin even more. His will was strong and he whispered back to the hat, “I don’t need them to accept me to acknowledge me.”

The hat chuckled at his response and in the two words that followed, Landon sensed that he somehow had confirmed something with the sorting hat. “Very well.”

There was a pause and then he heard the next word vibrate within him as the hat announced it to the waiting room.

“SLYTHERIN!”

And when the hat was lifted from his head, Landon finally opened his eyes to a cheering section of the room, whose vibrant green and silver decorations adorned their table. He stood up, still shaking from the attention. As he made his was down the stairs and joined his fellow Slytherin’s, one thought prevailed more than any other:

I’m going to need to get over my fear of snakes …

Lucas was staring at the ceiling in awe...he couldn't even tell it there was a ceiling. It just looked like the night sky. If it rained, would it come pouring on his head? No, it's probably magic, actually. It took a bit for Lucas to realize all the people around him. Gosh, there were a lot a people. He sort of shrunk, until he head the headmaster speak. He hardly listened...but then there was that hat. That weird hat was talking? Incredible...then the headmaster rang out names. Kids walked up, and the 'Sorting Hat' yelled out one of four names.
Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and lastly, Gryffindor.
What the heck did those mean? Whatever they meant, the others seemed to go to one of four tables, based on the name that was yelled out. Maybe it was groups. But the Hat definitely took some time with some of the kids...were they having conversations or something?
Nah, probably not.
Lucas fell out of his thoughts with a crash once he heard his name. Slightly panicked, he walked up the steps, shaking. How many people were watching him? He didn't want to know...he sat down on the chair, seeing the entire hall's eyes upon him...it was the last thing he saw before the hat went over his eyes. He froze when he heard a little voice in his head.
"Ah, you're frightened, aren't you? Then definitely not Gryffindor for you." Gryffindor, what...oh, right. Houses, the whole song about them. He had forgotten for a moment there. He liked the sound of Ravenclaw, but he didn't think he was bright. Slytherin...honestly sounded like a bad match for him. He wondered if he would even fit in Hufflepuff... "Your mind is just racing right now, hmm? Well, don't worry. I know just the place for you...and it's HUFFLEPUFF!" Lucas blinked as applaud broke out, and the hat was lifted from his head...still too many people looking at him. He saw a particular group standing up and ushering him over. He decided to sit down over there...people were welcoming him, patting his back, ruffling his mess of hair. He felt...

He felt like he wanted that hat back over his eyes. But this still felt nice.

Avery had been so excited when she was first leaving for Hogwarts, but it was quite intimidating now that she was here. On the train, she had been asleep and hadn't had any time to make any new friends. Just her luck. And now, standing here waiting to be sorted, she was more nervous than ever before. Nevertheless, she still wanted to enjoy this year and hopefully find somewhere she fits in.

Avery was deep in thought when she heard her name called. AVERY SALENHANDER! Avery looked up and walked forward with confidence. She might have been nervous, but she wouldn't let it show. She sat down and the hat was plopped down over her eyes.

The hat made a "Hmm" sound and she waited patiently, wandering where she was going to be placed. She let her mind march to the beat of it's own drum, letting it think about anything and everything. From chocolate covered frogs to Quidditch to the current and previous headmasters to knuts and sickles and even to her favorite foods. She had decided long before that she would let her mind speak for itself.

The hat chuckled. "So you are a very curious person I see. You tend to think of completely sensible, yet irrelevant things for absolutely no reason."

Avery didn't reply to the hat. She just kept her eyes closed and let her brain roam. The hat suddenly broke her out of her thoughts.

"Aha! "So you're definitely not a Hufflepuff.""

Avery continued on with her thoughts.

"Much to loyal to be a Slythrin..."

"Hmm, that leaves us with Gryffindor and Ravenclaw....I do wonder, where I shall place you."

"Well girl, I must tell you, you're far from average, and this most certainly wasn't an easy choice, but I feel as if you choose brains over bravery therefore..."

"RAVENCLAW!!!"

Avery smiled when the hat had chosen her house. It was exactly what she was hoping for. After the hat was removed, she heard loud cheers coming from Ravenclaw's table. She quickly walked over to the table with her head held high. She was proud to be a Ravenclaw, and she knew her family would be as well. She silently took a seat as the cheers died down and the ceremony continued.

"A tricky one, I see," whispered the voice of the Sorting Hat in her head, causing Erika to grit her teeth as it set her on edge, she was already tense enough without the almost taunting tone of the Sorting Hat irritating her further. "Mm, quite impatient too aren't you,Miss Hines." Her teeth ground again, eyes flinty and furious behind the material of the old hat that stopped her from being able to look out at the four tables and out at the other first years waiting to be sorted that September evening. "You have your brother's keen outlook for learning, but my, my what is this temper that I see before me.." The hat made tittering noises and Erika fought to keep her fingers upon her knee from twitching as the Sorting Hat delved through her mind. She wasn't comfortable with the hat looking through her thoughts, sensing her emotions and truly seeing everything that she was. She was a Hines. A Hines wasn't supposed to show their emotions so openly. Her fist curled in her lap.

It spoke again. "Now, now Miss Hines, I'm only here once a year to do what I was created to do.." the hat spoke gently, "I put all young witches and wizards where they belong." Erika unclenched her fist slowly as she fought to reign in her irritation and annoyance, "Sort me then, you useless scrap of fabric - I have better things to be doing than waiting for your verdict" thought Erika viciously.

"Very well.." uttered the Hat..

"RAVENCLAW!"

As the hat was lifted from her head, Erika plastered a gentle smile upon her face as she made her way to the table of Ravenclaw House. Finally, it was done.

Amaya shook as she joined the line with the other first years. She tried to do anything to keep her mind off of what was happening. She really, truly, just wanted to make her parents proud. She wasn't that brave, heck, she was practically crying right now, so she guessed she probably wouldn't be a Gryffindor. She hoped to be a Ravenclaw. Her mother was one, and it seemed like her parents liked to argue which house she would be in. Ever since she had gotten her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, and she set off to buy her supplies, she was so nervous to get here. Now, she was here, and there was nothing to do but wait until her name was called. She tried to control her shake-y legs, and she wobbled as the line slowly moved forward. She had looked up to this moment her whole life! So, why was she so petrified? The line seemed to be going as slowly as ever, and she had so many thoughts of what would happen when she placed the Sorting Hat on her head. What if it said she didn't belong here? What if she sat for hours until it decided she wasn't even a witch? What would her parents think if it sent her home? How would her parents react to her coming home? Would they still even love her?! "Jackson, Amaya!" Her thoughts were interrupted by the headmaster calling her name. She wobbled over to the stool, and tried to take her mind off of things. She sat down carefully, and placed the ripped hat on her head. It drooped over her eyes, and she had so many thoughts. Is everyone looking at me? Are they making fun of me? Could all the Houses reject me, and send me away? She didn't want to disappoint her parents. "Definitely not a Gryffindor..." the hat's voice scared her. She felt herself almost tumble off the stool Please don't make me a Slytherin! She had heard stories of people being put into Slytherin and becoming evil Please don't! "Not Slytherin huh?" she wondered how loud the hat was actually speaking "You don't seem right for a Hufflepuff either!" the old hat laughed. The laugh seemed to echo through the room Please say it wasn't as loud as it sounded! she felt herself blush under the hat. "Well, that obviously makes you a...." the hat paused, and Amaya panicked. A what?! Not a witch?! Please let me s-- "RAVENCLAW!!!" the hat's booming voice scared her, and she took it off of her head. The whole table was cheering A-are they really that happy i'm with them? she smiled, and took a seat with her new Hogwarts family.

Oh, how out of his element, Mac was. He must have looked like such a fool from the moment he walked into the Great Hall. He wasn't too worried about that, though. He was more preoccupied with how amazing Hogwarts was as a whole. So utterly enchanting compared to the droll life he'd led before he'd gotten his acceptance letter. Curious was how the Great Hall was lit, not by bulbs or any chandelier, but by candles, hundreds or thousands of them floating above his head! The sight of it all was just incredible. Most curious of all was that, just above this physics-defying wonder of light, was a sky full of stars. He could even pick out some of the constellations he knew by heart. The Great Hall had a ceiling, of course, but it sure didn't seem like it from where Mac was standing. The beautiful, unfiltered sky of stars reflected in his eyes as he stared up into the abyss.

Everything about Hogwarts defied the very laws of physics. Or maybe, it just fit into a law that he had not been taught. He wanted, more than he'd wanted anything in his life, to learn and find his place here.

"GRYFFINDOR!" The Sorting Hat bellowed, jolting Mac out of his reverie. He straightened his posture as he looked forward, a bit embarrassed by how easily distracted he was from the ceremony. A girl around his age cheered happily with Gryffindor's table as she ran over to join them.

It was his turn to be called next and he nearly tripped over himself as he rushed up to the chair. His hands grew clammy as the Hat was plopped down on his head. In front of him was one of the biggest crowds he'd seen in his life, and to make matters worse, all their attention was expressly on him. It was a bit nerve-wracking.

"Ah, Mr. Murphy. A nervous little thing, aren't you?" The Sorting Hat grumbled. "Hm. I sense a great deal of fear from you... but I also sense curiosity. Hm, yes, a keen mind, eager to learn! You would do quite well in a house like Slytherin, hm? Or perhaps, being the patient young thing that you are, Hufflepuff might be better suited for you."

Mac's eyes fluttered shut; he did not reply. He still had so much learn. No matter what house was chosen for him, he only hoped that he could live up to their expectations and excel in whatever way he could. "Ah, I see," the Sorting Hat said with a contemplative chuckle. "Yes, I think I know exactly where to put you..."

"RAVENCLAW!"

Ravenclaw's table exploded into applause, much like Gryffindor's had for the girl before him. He grinned, his heart flourishing with warmth and belonging as the Hat was plucked from his head. As he walked over to join his new classmates at their table, they welcomed him with open arms.

Theodore felt like he was vibrating. He didn't know if it was from fear, excitement, or both, but he was definitely vibrating. This was so cool, and he had to restrain himself to keep from pinching his arm, just to make sure he wasn't dreaming. He knew he wasn't dreaming already. He had pinched himself five times before, and each time hurt. He fiddled with the sleeves of his robe, each name called making him more and more anxious. Just call his stupid name, already!

At last, he heard the sweet music of his name being called, and he didn't stop himself from full on sprinting towards the chair. The stool wobbled a bit from the force of him sitting down, and if the hat wasn't placed on him quicker, he would grab it and tug it down himself. This is exactly why he was smart enough to sit on his hands to avoid doing just that.

"An energetic fellow, I see." He almost jumped out of the chair from hearing the voice. Warn a guy, next time! He heard a chuckle come from the hat. "Not afraid to speak your mind, as well. Certainly a trait of a Gryffindor." Oh, he'd heard of them! The brave ones! Man, he couldn't wait to be put into G- "Then again, Slytherin would suit your needs just as well." Hm. Slytherin? He knew better than to assume they were the evil house, so maybe it would- "I see a good deal of loyalty in you. Hufflepuff would fit nicely." The friendly house! Nice! "And yet… you have a thirst for knowledge. An eagerness to learn and understand whatever you set your mind to. Hm… I see. I know exactly where you fit…" Wait, it doesn't mean-

"RAVENCLAW!"

The nerd house?! He got up to walk to the table, trying his best to hide his confusion. He had heard students waiting to be sorted talk about stuck up Ravenclaws, thinking they're better than everyone else. Was that him? They seemed so welcoming, though… he would have to think more about this whole situation, it seemed.

Maggie stood in the crowd of first-years, bouncing on her toes in excitement. She, a muggle-born, had no clue what was going on, as she hadn’t bothered to look at any of the dusty, second-hand textbooks her mother had bought her. Nonetheless, she was beyond excited for what was to come, and she grinned widely as her name was called up.
Maggie Parker!” The professor called, his loud voice booming and filling the room. Maggie raced up to the stool where a raggedy old hat sat and jammed it on her head. She didn’t even know what house she wanted to end up in, as she, again, had no clue what was going on. She’d seen other kids go before her, though, and she could take a wild guess as to what she had to do.
Ha!” a voice filled Maggie’s head, making her jump slightly in her seat on the rickety old stool. “This is the easiest one I’ve had in years!
“I’m not sure wether that’s a compliment.” Maggie deadpanned, speaking loudly. A chorus of giggles erupted from the crowd. Maggie grinned and winked at them, happy to be the source of their laughter.
Me neither.” the hat sassed back, causing Maggie to glare. “Gryffindor!

The Perseveration of the sorting hat was enough to make Jürgen's head spin as it mused over the possibilities. He had expected to be placed in Ravenclaw or Slytherin, not Gryffindor so he found himself startled when the Sorting Hat decreed "Gryffindor!" with all the flair a sentient object could muster. Wide eyed and silent Jürgen would meander away from the spectacle and try to remember where others of the same designation were already standing.

"Is this where the other lions are sitting," Jürgen asked sheepishly as he took a seat next to a young man about his age with lighter hair and a bit of a rounder face. He was pleasant enough not that he had said a word, only nodded. "Name is Jürgen Hess," he announced as he extended his hand in greeting. "I am excited to start this new year off with you. Let's have a good time."

Things went poorly for him on the train, his attempt to make conversation with that first group of young ladies on the train soured his journey. He found another place to sit but pleasantries were difficult to maintain when they are one-sided. It was time to try again one could suppose.

Step by step they walked further into the Great Hall. The architecture was certainly stunning but Galton’s mind was fixed on other things- food. His stomach grumbled at the sight of the plethora in front of him.

Galton stood a tad above average for his age, growing everyday it seemed. This was accompanied by a hunger that needed attention at this moment. At home, in his family’s candy shop it would be easy for him to sneak a snack to hold him over - but not here. He’d not had anything to eat for more than a few hours and the fact now seemed even more important to Galton.

As he waited among his classmates he tried to calm himself. Name by name kids went up and came down, sitting at their new tables. With much luck he’d be next. But Galton wasn’t lucky. He had to wait and wait, minutes stretching in his mind to eternities. And then:

“Lansdale, Galton”

And so Galton’s feet carried him forward. He wasn’t particularly worried. He’d heard the stories from his parents and grandparents. Though they had never said what house they were in, Galton had found hints of color suggesting their fates. And now it was his turn.

“Galton, yes, Galton. You seem to be a rather busy mind. Something familiar here... Wait, I’ve got it... Gryffindor!”

And like that it seemed the sorting hat had chosen. Galton was rather surprised it had been able to pick out a house given how all he was thinking about was food, but I guess that was the beauty in magic.

He strode off to the Gryffindor table, with applause littered around him he couldn’t help but feel excited. Food would fill his stomach soon sure, but he had people to meet and friends to make.
