Ending A Year
Zander Vorse | Gryffindor | First Year
Zander sat in the Great Hall finishing the last of his homework for the year. He missed his parents and his friends in Galway. He was sure that when he got home his parents would ask all about the time he had at Hogwarts. He didn't know what to tell them. He hadn't really made any new friends, but he learned a lot over the past year. That was one of the reasons he really liked Hogwarts, it taught you many things. He learnt how to make a few potions. Although, his parents were really looking forward to him making a few magical friends instead of muggles. But, Hogwarts had its way of working things out. He was sure to make some at some point.
He closed up his Astronomy homework satisfied he would get at least and A, really only ever getting one grade less in Defense against the Dark Arts, his weakest subject. The weather seemed to be rainy day today, which is why he was inside watching the ceiling of the Great Hall instead of outside on the grounds getting wet. Other than that he spent most of his time doing classes or spending his time in the Gryffindor Dormitory. He laid his head down on his notebook and took a deep breath, this year was a good year, but next year would be better.

She would love to go outside and stroll over the grounds, but getting wet wasn’t worth it today. She passed the familiar armours and paintings that she had come to know this past year. She couldn’t believe it had been almost a year ago when she was here for the first time, searching her way through this castle. She had come to love it, and often wandered through the corridors to explore the castle. But today she didn’t feel like exploring. She had been bored in her Common Room, and wanted to see if she could find some company in the Great Hall. As she entered the Hall, her eyes scanned the room for familiar faces. She saw some people she knew, but her eyes were drawn to a boy at the Gryffindor table, lying with his head on what seemed to be his homework. Knowing how homework could be a struggle, she decided to go over to the boy and maybe she could offer some help. Hi, can I sit with you? I’m Ruby, by the way. She sat down at the other side of the table as the boy, and waited for his reaction. She saw his homework books scattered around the table. Maybe I can be of any assistance? | ⋆ ✩ ☾ ✩ ⋆ enter |

As much as he hated to admit, Zander hated talking to people. Not really, but it was a lot of work and he didn't know the exact way to respond all the time. So, when Ruby said hi he took a minute to gather his thoughts before talking. Oh, hi. I don't really need help with anything, I just finished actually. He grabbed a few papers and shoved them into the Astronomy book he borrowed from the Library figuring he would turn in the homework and return the book after. I'm Zander by the way. Do you like chess? He started to fiddle with his fingers, not really sure what else to say, he only ever played muggle chess with friends at home, but he did play one game of wizard's chess against his dad when he was little. Or do you like other things. I like Quidditch, and nature. All sorts of creatures, but I especially like space and Astronomy. It's my favorite class, at least so far. I think I might like Care of Magical Creatures more whenever I take it in third year. What year are you in by the way? It's my first year. He realized he may have asked a little too many questions before waiting for an actual answer so he got quiet again and waited for a response.

But maybe he wanted to do something else instead. Zander asked if she liked chess. To be honest, I never really played chess. I know the rules and stuff, but I never took the time to learn more about it and become a good player. She thought of that one time she was totally crushed by a fellow student, who tried to learn her the rules. I had a rather horrible defeat in the past, haven’t gotten over it, I guess. She blushed and smiled at the boy. He looked nervous, fiddling with his fingers. I like nature too, I like to stroll around the grounds here. It feels peaceful, just being one with nature. Or does that sound strange? She felt her cheeks go red again. Hopefully Zander didn’t notice it too much. She didn’t have a lot of male friends, and it was a little awkward talking to a boy. Just pull yourself together, he is just a student like you. She looked back at Zander. I like Astronomy too! And also herbology and potions. I look forward to ancient runes in our third year, but care for magical creatures sounds really interesting too. I’m a first year, just like you. She relaxed a little. She searched her pockets and took out some chocolate frogs. You want one too? I really like chocolate, I always have some in my pockets. She held one out for Zander. Maybe we could go do something? I love walking around the grounds! It is strangely peaceful. Have you ever fed an owl sunflower seeds? He often fed the owls whenever he was out. Although, sometimes they were a bit mean and tried to fight for more.
He took the chocolate frog and it squirmed in his hand. Chocolate frogs are weird, he thought, but they are tasty. Thanks... Darn, another Glenda Chittock, I have four of these. Do you like collecting cards? Zander always wanted to complete a collection but the only mythic card he had was Harry Potter, so it might take a while.
I always thought ancient runes would be a bit boring, but I don't know much about it so maybe they aren't.
She was blushing a bit, but Zander didn't judge much. It was a little awkward talking to a girl. Also, his mom always said that making friends outside of his house was going to be more difficult because of the differences, but maybe things have changed since she's been here almost 25 years ago. She was also a Slytherin, and people seem to have problems with them for some reason.
Maybe we could walk around the grounds? Although, it is raining so it might be better to stay inside.

I did that a lot while growing up. I’m a half-blood, so I went a lot with my mum, and they could get greedy and pushy if there wasn’t enough. She took a bit from her chocolate frog and looked at the card that came with it. I have Gaspard Shingleton, got him already too. You want him? We can trade. She didn’t want to tell him about the huge stack of cards she had near her bed, as a result of years of eating chocolate frogs, as they were her favourite candy. As a kid I was absolutely fascinated by the ancient Egypt. I went to a muggle school, so we were taught another history course as they do here. And it always appealed to me. Maybe that’s why I look forward to ancient runes, it kind of feels like a substitute for that. She didn't know why she would tell him so much of herself so soon. But somehow she liked this boy, he was easy to talk to, and didn't seem to judge her. She looked up at the ceiling and saw the sky was clearing up a bit. Maybe it would stop raining soon and they could go outside. She smiled and looked back at Zander. Maybe we could go and take a stroll to the kitchen? It seems like the rain will stop soon. Zander started to get more relaxed as Ruby kept talking. I don't know if it's like pigeons. I'd imagine so. I'm a pure-blood. But, my mom went to Hogwarts and my dad went to Illvermony in America. I lived in America until my parents moved to Ireland so I could go to Hogwarts instead. He missed home, he had a big yard he would play Football with his friends. He missed them too, and he wished he could tell them why he had to leave but it was against the law.
I did go to a muggle elementary school for a little while, I have a few muggle friends back home. He hadn't ever opened up to anyone like this before. At least not at Hogwarts. Surprisingly, even though he was pure-blood, he didn't know much about the wizarding world like other pure-bloods. He hated that term, "pure-blood," it sounded weird, like he was supposed to feel superior.
He was feeling a bit hungry. We could go get snacks, but they don't have sunflower seeds in the kitchen. You have to collect them in the greenhouses. But that requires permission so I pick them from the edge of the forest instead. He smiled, sometimes he was a bit of a troublemaker. Would you like to be friends?

Wow, that is so cool. I would like to visit America some day. But it sounds really hard that you had to leave your whole life behind. I wouldn´t know where to start again if it were me. Very brave of you. She had noticed the sadness in his story, and that it hadn´t been easy for him to move. I liked going to a muggle school. I think every witch or wizard should do this at some point, to gain some knowledge how the muggles live and how to be discrete. For a moment, she let her mind wander for a bit to her parents and friends at home. But she had become to love the life here at Hogwarts, and the friends she made this year. I would love for us to be friends. I think we´re going to have a great time here together. She stood up from her seat and waited for Zander to do the same. Let´s go to the kitchen. This talking about snacks made me hungry. She picked up Zander´s books and handed them to him and smiled. And I wouldn´t mind to go outside after if it stops raining. Zander got up to follow Ruby. Well, technically I moved to Ireland when I was 6 and went to Balornock Primary School. All my muggle friends are back at home, I just can't go to the same school. He smiled. It was okay though, he would see them over the summer, as well as his parents which gave him much comfort. As far as he was aware his parents had taken care of his issues with the muggle world and that he was going to a boarding school in London for some more advanced mathematics, something his friends were amazed by. Maybe he could make some more friends at Hogwarts and be okay both at home and at his "boarding school."
He was excited to go get some food though. We should get Pumpkin Pastys, they are delicious. Oh, and also more chocolate frogs! Maybe we will get something other than what we already have. He was excited to have a friend who enjoyed chocolate as much as him, also wandering the grounds. He would definetly teach her how to feed the owls and collect sunflower seeds once it wasn't so rainy outside. Maybe they would even spend time in the Astronomy Tower together and talk about all the things they knew.

She wanted to see so much of the world. Her world had been limited to her hometown and has now been extended to Hogwarts. She thought about her piggy bank at home. It wasn’t much, but she was already saving up for her travels. She wanted to see as many countries as she could, and take in all the different cultures. Zander started talking about food, and that was triggering enough to bring her back to reality. Oh, yeah, pumpkin pasties are also really good. Maybe someday we should sneak into Hogsmeade, and visit Honeydukes. I could use a restock of my favourites. She smiled, and thought about the fun times that lay ahead for them. Zander had promised her to show where the sunflower seeds grow, so she would invite him for a trip later when the weather was more inviting. She looked up at the ceiling. Oh, it’s still raining. I guess we must postpone our trip to the grounds. Sadly, she shrugged her shoulders. Oh well, getting some snacks and back to the common room it is then I guess.
