After finishing their lunch, the two girls instantly grabbed their books and lay on the comfortable grass. Elena leaned against a nearby tree, its branches casting a shadow over them. She was immediately captivated by her book. Rose had her well figured out. Silence surrounded the two friends, but it was one of those comforting silences, where words are not needed, and awkwardness doesn't belong. Elena had never felt at ease like that with someone. She felt understood and seen. She really hoped Rose and she would continue their relationship at Hogwarts.
As the day passed, the sun began to decline, and the park slowly emptied. They had bought tickets for the evening, so they had a few hours ahead of them. "I am in dire need of caffeine. How about we stop at that bakery nearby? Then we can head to the theater!" Rose said with a grin. Elena nodded, already gathering their belongings. "That is a great idea. I'm going to need sugar if I want to survive the night," she laughed.
Rose paused before entering, the small bell ringing as they arrived. The scent of coffee beans instantly filled the air, mixed with faint aromas of vanilla and maple syrup. Elena meticulously scrutinized the menu, trying to find something she liked.
Strangely, although she was the stereotype of a coffee addict, she never really enjoyed that bitter and cloying beverage. No matter how much milk or sugar she added, she would still wince in disgust each time she drank one. Her eyes sparkled when she saw this bakery had a custom hot chocolate. She grabbed the menu under Rose's surprised gaze. Elena stuck her tongue out, laughing, "What? Am I not allowed to have a hot chocolate in the middle of summer?" She huffed. There are no seasons for hot chocolate, despite what haters say.
Excited, she started making her drink. The more sugar, the better. She marked all the extras she wanted and headed towards the counter. "Good afternoon! I would like a hot chocolate, please," she smiled, handing over the money. After Rose had ordered, the two girls sat at a table, chatting. Their conversation became more meaningful, moving from "what's your favorite color" to family topics.
"My dad is an Auror," Elena said. "He met my mom in a cafe like this one." She smiled, thinking about her lovebird parents. "Sometimes, I'm scared one of his missions will go wrong," she sighed with a tiny voice. "But I like the fact that he's protecting our world. I want to be just like him when I grow up."
The two girls were interrupted by their incoming orders, two steaming cups and a plate arriving at the table. Elena thanked the waitress and grabbed her cup with a hungry smile. She raised her eyes, seeing Rose's widen as she stared at her order. "Hot chocolate, milk, sugar, and caramel," Elena quoted, her smile growing bigger. She had ordered pancakes too, thinking maybe Rose would want to share them. I hope she likes pancakes. But who doesn't? She pushed the towering stack towards the center of the table and stole a couple of strawberries from the top before toasting with Rose. "To the beginning of our friendship!" she said as the cups collided.
May it last long.
