It had been quite the day so far, it was the weekend and Mylo had been trying to finish off some homework they had left and their brain just didn't want to work with them. And the upcoming end of year test weren't helping either, they'd already started practising for them as Mylo didn't want to mess them up.

Deciding to take a walk to see if that would help they made their way through the castle, just wandering aimlessly with not a single destination in mind. He came across a few other students who seemed to be wandering on their own or in groups and he wondered if they were also just walking for the sake of walking or if they had somewhere to go.

Looking outside the windows of the castle he saw the grounds, it seemed to be great weather as the sun was shining and he could see many students playing on the grass or just lying in the sun. Enjoying the good weather after the colder months. 'Maybe I could go for a walk outside in a bit, seems like nice weather. Hopefully there'll be a nice and quite path to walk down.' He thought as he aimlessly wandered the halls.

As Mylo walked along the 4th floor corridors he heard a bit of commotion from one of the classrooms. It sounded like fighting? As he got closer he could hear spells being cast, some of which he didn't even recognise, but it seemed like it was one person casting them. So not a fight.

Getting a bit curious they continued their walk along the corridor and as they got to the room he peaked his head around the corner. As they looked in they saw a student casting spells at one of the dummies in the room, it seemed like a practice room of sorts. There weren't any other students here so he wondered what she was practising for. As she seemed to cast some kind of blindfold spell, Mylo was kind of curious as to when he'd learn that one, it looked interesting and he was curious as to how it worked, she moved in such a way that they could see her face.

He recognised her, but where from, after staring for a few seconds trying to figure it out it finally came to them. It was Rose! The girl who could turn into a cat that he'd met earlier in the year. He couldn't help but admire her spell casting, it was pretty much perfect. At least from what he could tell, they didn't even know how to cast any of them. But it was quite interesting, he liked learning spells but they'd never actually cast them on other people in a fight setting in class. And seeing Rose 'fight' it made them wonder what that would be like.

Taking a breath he decided to go and say hello after she seemed to have taken a little break he walked into the room, careful not to make any sudden movements that would prompt her to sling a spell at their head.

"Hey.. those were some pretty cool spells."

Rose's anger had finally let up, but she continued to cast spells at the dummy- ones she needed to practice, rather than ones she knew by heart. "Impedimenta," she said, the spell hitting the dummy in the leg. She leveled her wand at it, casting again. "Impedimenta." This time, it hit the torso area. This was good enough for her in that moment- the Impediment Jinx was a little harder than, say, spells like the Knockback Jinx. She had to focus a little more when casting it.

At a voice she recognized, Rose turned to see the Ravenclaw kid she had met the other day. Mylo, she remembered. They were a little awkward, but they were kind and were very interesting to talk to, so she was glad to see he was warming up to her. He complimented her spellcasting, or more specifically, the spells she was casting, and Rose smiled. "Oh- thank you. They are very useful in dueling. I'm sure you'll learn them in class in a couple years."

She let out a breath, letting her muscles relax. It was probably good that he had come in- she needed a break from practicing. "And they're also useful for letting off some steam, I suppose," she added, walking forward to take a seat on the edge of the dueling stage. She thought to the Ravenclaw duellists she knew- she was pretty sure Mylo wasn't one, so she asked, "Have you ever thought about joining the dueling team? It can be kind of rough at times, but I think it's worth it in the end. It's pushed me to be a much better spellcaster."

It was true- the benefits in dueling, she had found, far outweighed the negatives. It was good to have an activity other than schoolwork to focus on. Rose felt all sports could be that way- Quidditch, and broom racing, too. It gave her an outlet, and, as she said to Mylo, it even pushed her to be better at her spellcasting, probably helping her in her Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts grades. She had even met some pretty cool people through dueling, and felt a sense of camaraderie after winning (or even losing) with them. She didn't know if Mylo would be a good duelist, since she hadn't really seen him cast spells, but she was pretty sure they were the kind of student who could do anything they put their mind to.

No spell was slung at their head, which was quite nice as Mylo liked being in one piece and unharmed. Rose had turned towards Mylo after he'd started talking to her and didn't seem to mind them interrupting her spellcasting practice, or at least they assumed it was practice. Not much use in having a duel with something that couldn't cast spells back, although it wouldn't surprise Mylo if their was a spell that made it so that the dummies could cast spells but he hadn't seen them do it yet so they assumed they couldn't.

She started talking about the spells being mostly stuff they'd learn in later years, which didn't surprise Mylo that much but having seen them in action he couldn't wait to learn them and to learn what makes them tick.

As she approached them she let out a sigh and seemed to release some tension or something, it seemed like the casting was quite strenuous. Going into their bag they grabbed a water bottle, not being able to see one in clear sight, and decided to offer her something to drink as he thought it might help her come down from the activity. (Hydrate don't diedrate kids.) Shyly he offered the water over to her, hoping to not be overstepping.

"They look quite difficult, do you have to concentrate a lot? Also here's some water, I can't see a water bottle and my dad always says you need to stay hydrated or else it's not good for your health. I haven't drunk from this one yet!" He adds, knowing that some people don't like sharing water bottles and produces a second bottle that has about 3/4 of the water missing. "Only if you want it of course, you don't have to take it." They nervously add.

Going to sit down next to the girl as she makes her way over to the edge of the stage, it was a decent size and Mylo wondered what kind battles were held here, he got a bit lost in their thoughts. Thinking about the spells Rose had been casting and how long it would take before they'd learn them as well. He quite liked the look of the protection charm, but all in due time.

The question that Rose asked them only made Mylo think even more, they hadn't really thought about joining the duelling team before. They'd tried flying and that went horrible and after that had been so occupied with classes and learning that they hadn't really thought about sports. But having seen Rose cast those spells in such a way that required some real skill and her comment of it making her a better caster left Mylo wondering if it could maybe be an idea.

"I haven't really thought about it, or any sports really. I suppose it could be a good idea, it would help me practice my spells and I could practice my self-defence. Although I'm not sure what the rules around using spells as self-defence are like. But it's an option." He stated, starting to consider maybe looking into duelling.

"What's it like?" They asked, hoping to hear more about the sport and Rose's views on it.

The younger student offered her a water bottle, and Rose took it. "Thank you," she said. "Yeah, if you don't concentrate some spells can go kind of haywire, and that isn't really helpful," she explained, laughing. "But the ones I've learned in more recent years- like my fourth and fifth years- are harder than the ones I learned back in my first year. There are a couple of spells I don't really have to think about anymore, because they're like muscle memory," she told them. She opened the water bottle, taking a sip. Rose was glad that he had offered it to her- she probably needed to get into the habit of bringing a water bottle with her when she went to practice like this, but it hadn't really crossed her mind when she had stormed in here.

Mylo shared that he wasn't a duelist yet, and hadn't really thought about it.

She paused to ponder her answer for a moment before saying anything. "I think it's a pretty great sport. You have more motivation to practice spells, which can make you do better in class, and it's good to have something else to focus on than just school. Kinda makes you a more well-rounded person. And maybe people who are hiring look at that? But I don't know for sure, and you definitely don't have to worry about that until later years." Rose took another sip of water, and then closed the bottle. "Hmm... you also get to duel with other people, which is fun. It's a different kind of relationship, I think, to have to fight on a dueling stage with somebody. There's a couple of people I don't really talk to outside of dueling, but I'm glad I got to know them because they're on my team." She smiled. "Maybe it's the Gryffindor in me, but I also love the feeling of adrenaline when you're on the stage, especially when you're winning or a spell hits or something. It's just a great feeling to win, really," she laughed.

Rose shrugged. "Of course, it's not for everybody, so I won't be offended or anything if you don't join or if you do join and hate it," she reassured them. Between their last conversation and this one, Rose felt a sort of big sister feeling towards this kid. They shared a lot of interests, she had found, from creatures to Herbology and now, perhaps, dueling. She found she didn't really mind taking them under her wing at all.

"Would you maybe want to try on the dummy?" she asked, making her eyes sparkle. "It's not the same as dueling, but maybe it'll help you decide whether you want to next year or not."

They were glad Rose took the water bottle, like they'd said before it was important to keep yourself hydrated and take care of yourself. As they listened to her talk he wondered what kind of spells they'd learn in the coming years, some of the ones they'd learnt this year alone were a little bit difficult so he couldn't imagine how difficult the spells in later years could get.

He understood that some spells had just become automatic at this point for her. "I think that's because you use them a lot, right? I assume with the duelling that some of the spells can be really quite useful to have as muscle memory." Glad to see that she was taking some water from the bottle they'd offered to her. Listening to Rose point out the good parts of the sport.

"My dad always tells me to learn as much as I can, but to also keep things balanced. I have no idea what people who are hiring are looking for though, maybe just things that you are good at and that they need people to be good at?" He said, as she put down the water bottle. Not really understanding the 'fun' part of duelling that Rose mentioned, he supposed it could be nice to meet new people but they'd never really been in a real fight before, it was always controlled and physical, practice as it were. And in a magical duel so many things could go wrong, but it could also help them master spells better which would be nice he thought.

"I do like the feeling of being good at something, but it doesn't necessarily hurt others right? Or if it does I assume they get immediate attention and no lingering injuries? I don't really want to give other people permanent pain if I can help it." He said a bit hesitant to hurt others physically. Although they supposed that they were there of their own free will and were ready to get a little hurt.

At Rose's words of being able to try it and not continue if they didn't like it they felt like it might be worth having a try. The worst that could happen would be that they hated it and never did it again, the best that they enjoyed a new sport. And her idea of trying a spell on a dummy did sound like a good place to start.

"I think I'll try it, it might work." He said, standing up and making their way over to a spot in front of a dummy.

Raising their wand and pointing it they thought about what spell to cast, something that would actually be useful in a duel. A spell immediately coming to mind they readied themselves to cast it. Concentrating on the movement and incantation.

"Jaculor" A small rock flying out of their wand and hitting the dummy square in the chest, making it rock back ever so slightly. Not realising how much power could be behind that spell it took Mylo aback a bit, but a smile crept onto their face as they looked back at Rose, a feeling of pride coming up at the spell working first time round.

The redhead nodded. "Yeah, exactly. Especially the Knockback Jinx- I'm pretty sure that one is probably one of the most used in dueling. It's incredibly useful for efficient damage, though not for much else than that- a simple and straightforward spell."

When the conversation switched to careers after Hogwarts, Rose hoped that she hadn't made them worry about jobs and all that prematurely. "Your dad sounds pretty smart. It probably depends on what you want to be. If you want to be a musician, people probably won't care much at all what spells you can do. But if you want to be an Auror, they'll probably want you to be more versed in spells and dueling and all that. But you have years before you need to worry about that," she added. Balance was definitely good in life, even when you were a student. Rose tried her best to keep a balance between studying, sports, and time for things that weren't related to school, like spending time with friends, playing with her cat, or taking time for herself. Balance was vital for keeping Rose sane, and she was pretty sure dueling was part of that.

"Yeah, you might hurt a couple people or get hurt yourself," she acknowledged honestly, "but the Hospital Wing staff is incredibly talented with healing spells, and everybody who has been hurt in a duel has come out of the Hospital Wing good as new." Rose herself would know, being knocked out in a few duels and having a few injuries. In the case that she walked away from the piste only minorly damaged, Rose would let her body heal itself, but if she had bigger injuries, the Nurse would fix it up quickly. Nothing was lasting in dueling.

She took one last sip of her generously donated water bottle, and then stood up as she offered to let Mylo try on the dummy. She stood behind them as Mylo leveled an elm wand at the dummy.

"Jaculor."

A little rock flew at the dummy, hitting it in the chest. Rose's eyebrows raised. "Are you messing with me? Are you sure you haven't dueled before?" she teased, the glimmer of sarcasm in her eyes. "But in all honesty, that was really good- your aim was spot-on. I almost want to tell you not to be a duelist, because then Ravenclaw will have gained an excellent spellcaster."

While the redhead wasn't the most competitive out there, she was still a Gryffindor, so of course she wanted her own house to win. She wasn't sure who she would root for if Mylo was up against any of her teammates, but she supposed she would be happy no matter who won in that case.

Rose gestured towards the dummy again. "Go again," she suggested.

If Mylo casted again towards the dummy, Rose would say after, "So what do you think? Think maybe you'll join the Ravenclaw team?"

Mylo had never heard of the knockback jinx, but how Rose described it it seemed a very powerful spell and they wondered when they'd be able to learn it. It seemed like there was a lot more to learn and many many more spells they'd come to learn, some probably a lot more useful than others.

And hearing her compliment his dad made Mylo smile, his dad was very smart and had taught them most of what they knew. But like Rose said, Mylo wouldn't have to worry about jobs for another few years and so they wouldn't quite yet, but it would be good to get as many skills as possible while they still could.

Rose's conformation about everyone getting healed after being injured in duelling settled Mylo's nerves ever so slightly. They still didn't quite like the idea, but knowing that they got helped immediately helped.

"I'm glad they get help, I've never been to the infirmary before but I've also never really seen anyone injured in the school so I imagine they're very good at what they do." He said, wondering what kind of healing spells there were.

After having shot the small rock at the dummy Rose seemed to be impressed, at least that's how Mylo interpreted it, noting jokingly about them being sure to have never done duelling before. And the praise that followed only made them feel more proud.

"I've only really done magic to practice the spells themself, never in a combat setting or anything. It's quite different trying to hit something." He noted, getting back into position after the redhead encouraged them to go again.

This time Mylo decided to try a combination, pointing their wand at the dummy they start the spells in quick succession. "Wingardium Leviosa" "Flipendo" and then when the dummy hit the ground again still on it's feet "Anathema Daphnis" watching the dummy get rooted to the ground.

They had never done something like this before, only having practised the spells separately and to perfection though, and felt proud at seeing it work and come together so nicely. It would be much different doing it to actual people but Mylo thought it might be worth a try. So at Rose's question they turned around to look at her, a smile on their face.

"I think I might try it, I could always stop if I don't like it and it might help me practice my spells better. Thanks for helping me." He shyly added, worrying the hem of their shirt between their fingers.

Rose seemed to be settling his nerves a little regarding dueling. She was glad to see the kid relax a little as they talked. All those years ago when she had haphazardly joined dueling because she couldn't get on the Quidditch team, she never would have guessed how much she'd enjoy sticking with it. Rose wished she had someone then to tell her what she was telling Mylo now, how everything would be fine, and that she didn't really have anything to worry about.

Yeah, she got beat up in her first three duels. But it was a required learning curve to push her to win. And it worked.

"They are really skilled," Rose confirmed. From experience, and from hearing stories, the staff at the Hospital Wing was tremendous. If Rose wasn't so against becoming a Healer because she didn't want to be like her mother, she would have taken more of an interest in the Hospital Wing and maybe volunteered. She saw some people doing that occasionally.

Mylo shot more spells at the dummy, gaining confidence. They were pretty good, she had to say. Rose was starting to think she should be a saleswoman. Either that, or Mylo was just naturally skilled and hadn't known it before.

"Of course," she said in response to his gratitude. "Would you maybe want to do a little mock duel? Maybe first to three?" It wouldn't be exactly like a duel, since neither of them were going to be taking each other out, and she hoped he wouldn't be pitted against someone four years older than them (in earlier years, this happened sometime, back when duels were randomly assigned, sometimes with two sixth years against two first years, but now they were a little more fair), but it would at least give Mylo a sense of how it felt. They said that they had never really used spells in combat before, so to give him a taste might be helpful.

If they agreed, she would walk to the other side of the stage, taking the place of the dummy. "Ready?" she asked. "Okay, go!"

Rose cast first, deciding to go with an easier spell to start off. This wasn't exactly a fair duel- Rose had four more years of spells and practice in her, but she had a feeling Mylo wasn't your typical first year when it came to spellcasting.

"Tarantallegra!" she said, the spell shooting from her wand. Maybe she caught them off guard, or maybe he just wasn't locked in, but the spell hit him easily, and Mylo was quickly dancing. She readied herself for his spell, soon to be cast at her. One down, two to go.

Although Mylo hadn't been to the infirmary themselves, or met any of the staff that worked on healing people they believed Rose wholeheartedly when she said that the staff was very skilled.

Which is why when Rose suggested a mock duel Mylo strongly considered it. He knew the duellist wouldn't do anything to harm them intentionally, or anything to harm them permanently they should say as the point of a duel is to kind of harm your opponent in such a way that they can't harm you, and if things did go wrong the healers were phenomenal as the two of them had already discussed.

Taking a second to think about it Mylo decided to do it, it would be a good indicator to if they would actually want to join the team and maybe they could pick up a spell or two, or something to improve the spells he already knew, from the older student. Mylo was never one to say no to an opportunity to learn something new.

And first to three seemed like a good deal. "That sounds good, and first to three is a good place to start." As they voiced their agreement Mylo watched Rose walk away from them, towards where the dummy had been standing. Mirroring her, he moved into position as well. Taking their spot at the other end of the podium. "Ready" He said, raising their wand and thinking about what would be best to cast.

As they were still thinking he saw Rose casting something at them, and they already knew he would be hit by it. Trying to get a spell in as well they cast the first thing that came to mind, one they had practised on the dummy earlier. "Wingardium Leviosa!"

Somehow Mylo seemed to be able to hit her, suprising even themselves a bit as they watched her get lifted into the air. Although they couldn't celebrate for long as he felt the spell they'd been hit with take effect.
