Not a Total Cat-astrophe Pet

Though she wouldn't admit it to anyone else, Amberley Morvay was having a bit of a breakdown. It was all so overwhelming, shopping for clothes, books, supplies for a new school she knew very little about. Despite her mother's magical talents, she had not immersed Amberley fully into the magical world like some of her peers shopping around her, and Amberley was feeling quite out of place as she wandered around Diagon Alley.

Perhaps that was why her attention was quickly drawn to the small pet shop, a sign above the doorway reading 'Magical Menagerie.' It was something familiar in her world of crazily unfamiliar things at the moment, and she felt herself almost pulled to the entrance. Amberley hesitated briefly, turning around to look at her mother who simply nodded her assurance. It was almost as if Veronica could sense the discomfort radiating off of Amberley and she knew that a pet might soothe those nerves. Nothing could go wrong with a furry little friend!

Inside of the shop, a couple was conversing in the back. The man, dressed in a flannel shirt, towered over his wife. When Amberley and her mother stepped in, they both turned and smiled.

"Welcome in!" the woman greeted them. "I'm Anita. Is there any way I can be of assistance today?"

Amberley felt her mother nudge her closer to the shopkeeper and she stepped forward. "I am looking for a pet," she said. "A cat, I think."

Anita smiled. "Then you're in the right place, honey," she said. "We have a wide variety of different cats here. Would you like to come over and meet some of them?"

Amberley nodded, following the woman to the section of the store where the cats were located. If she was being completely honest, she knew very little about cats, so it was nice to have the shopkeeper there to help.

"While we cannot guarantee the personality of any of the cats, each breed is known for different temperaments," Anita explained. "Is there anything in particular you are looking for?"

Amberley thought for a minute. "I guess...a friendly cat," she said. "But also one that can be independent because I might not be able to spend all of my time with it at school."

Anita nodded, thinking for a few moments. "Then I would suggest either a Brown Classic Tabby or Chartreux," she said. "The Brown Classic Tabby is known for being quite affectionate, but also adaptable and easygoing. The Chartreux is a gentle cat, they're low energy and are happy to curl up on your lap all day."

Amberley looked at the cats in front of her. The Chartreux was curled up in the corner, and the Brown Classic Tabby was blinking at her with its amber eyes staring inquisitively into her own. She couldn't help but smile at it. She held out her hand and the cat came over to sniff her, eventually rubbing its head against her in a sign of affection. "I think I'll take this one," she said.

Anita smiled. "She likes you already!" she said, grinning. "Sounds good to me!" Amberley smiled back. Perhaps Hogwarts wouldn't be so terrifying after all.
